Chapter 9
Amaya stood with her team and Team Kurenai, her gaze fixed on ninjas who had come to see them off. Among them was Fu, her vibrant energy unmistakable, standing out among the people present.
As Fu stepped forward, her face lit up with a hopeful smile. "Amaya!" she called, her voice bright against the backdrop of the departing ninjas. "I can't believe you're leaving so soon," she replied, trying to keep the sadness from creeping into her voice.
Amaya turned to face her, a mixture of sadness and warmth swelling within her. "I am sorry you have to stay here," she said softly, her heart heavy. She knew that Fu was as hated in the waterfall village as she was back in Konoha, but contrary to her, Fu hated her village
Fu dismisses her apology; she hated her village and the people in it. But it wasn't like she had a choice. Leaving that train of thought behind she spoke again determination shining in her eyes. "I'm going to miss you. But promise me you'll come back and visit, okay? I'll show you around! There are still so many places I want you to see, both in and outside the village!"
"I promise," she replied, "We'll see each other again."
In a sudden burst of affection, Fu wrapped her arms around Amaya, pulling her into a tight hug. Amaya's eyes widened in surprise, but she quickly returned the embrace, feeling the warmth of their friendship wash over her.
"You're the best, Amaya!" Fu exclaimed as they broke the hug, her eyes sparkling with excitement and hope. "I'll always remember you as my first friend!"
Amaya smiled, her heart lighter now. "You'll always be my friend too, Fu. No matter where we are."
Turning to the rest of the group, Fu waved enthusiastically. "Goodbye, Konoha friends!" she called, her voice ringing with joy.
"Konoha friends?" Kiba echoed, a teasing grin on his face. "I guess we'll take that title, huh?"
"Take care, Fu," Kakashi said, his tone professional yet gentle.
As Team 7 and Team 8 set off on their journey back to Konoha, the air felt heavy with unspoken thoughts. Memories of the recent battle loomed over them like a dark cloud, casting a shadow on their interactions.
Amaya walked alongside Sasuke, her expression pensive, while Shikamaru trudged behind them, brow furrowed in contemplation. Kakashi led the way with Kurenai, occasionally glancing back to check on the genin.
Sakura lagged a few paces behind, her heart racing as she stole wary glances at Amaya. The image of her unleashing that powerful, malevolent chakra against Ryuto replayed in her mind, sending a chill through her. She had always considered Amaya a skilled but subdued kunoichi, but now a creeping fear took root in her heart. The dark aura that had enveloped her in battle felt foreign and dangerous.
"Do you think she's okay?" Sakura whispered to Choji, her voice barely audible.
Choji looked ahead, stealing a glance at Amaya. "I don't know… that chakra felt different. It was like she was someone else."
Kiba, walking a bit ahead, shot a glance back at Amaya, unease gnawing at him. "I never thought Amaya could be this scary," he admitted, a shudder coursing through him. "That power… it's insane."
Sakura's heart raced at the memory. "The killing intent… it was unlike anything I've ever felt before." It stood in stark contrast to the Amaya she had known back at the academy—the determined but meek girl who wouldn't stand up to bullies and who would take their insults with a smile.
Shikamaru, who had been quietly observing, felt compelled to defend his teammate. "Amaya's not a monster. She's one of the best people I know," he said, his tone firm.
Choji hesitated, still unsure. "But what if she loses control again? That power… it didn't feel like it belonged to her."
"Maybe, but she also saved us," Shikamaru countered, his conviction unwavering. "You just have to see past the power. I trust her, and you should too."
Choji considered this, looking back at Amaya. Her distant expression revealed that she didn't feel proud of what had transpired. "I guess," he admitted quietly. If Shikamaru trusted her, perhaps he could too.
"I want to test myself against her," Kiba announced, trying to shake off the dread.
Amaya glanced back at her friends, her heart sinking as she noticed the wary looks directed her way and their whispered conversations. Their fear was palpable, and it cut deeper than she had anticipated. It made her feel isolated.
"Hey, Amaya!" Kiba called out, trying to lighten the mood but betraying his inner conflict. "I want to see if I can beat you in a match when we get back!"
Startled by the sudden attention, Amaya replied, "Um… okay, I guess?" Her voice held an uncertainty that mirrored her feelings.
Sasuke shot Kiba a sidelong glance, annoyance flickering across his face. "Don't push her, dog-breath. This isn't the time."
Kiba, sensing the tension, quickly redirected his enthusiasm. "I'm just saying! A little friendly competition never hurt anyone, right?"
Amaya forced a smile, but it felt hollow. Deep down, she understood their reactions—the fear that lingered in the air. She knew she would have to work hard to regain their trust. But for now, she found solace in the fact that within Team 7, she felt safe. They wouldn't judge her. And for that, she was grateful.
Kaito stood at the entrance of his new home in Konoha, taking in the modest yet inviting space. Soft sunlight streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow on the wooden floors and highlighting the emptiness that echoed around him. He ran a hand through his messy red hair, feeling a wave of sadness wash over him. Hanako would have loved this place—she would have known exactly how to fill it, choosing the right decorations and creating a warm atmosphere.
A gentle knock on the door jolted him from his thoughts. He opened it to find Amaya standing there, her bright smile instantly lifting his spirits. "Hey, Kaito! I brought you something!" she said, holding up a bag from a place called "Ichiraku Ramen".
His eyes lit up at the sight. "Oh, food? You came at the perfect moment!" he replied, a warmth spreading through him at her thoughtfulness.
"This isn't just any food," she huffed, an amused glint in her eyes. "This is the best food in all of Konoha!" Her confidence left no room for argument.
Kaito chuckled at her enthusiasm, his worries momentarily fading as her energy filled the space. They settled on the floor, steaming bowls of ramen between them. As they dug in, Amaya's expression shifted to something more serious. "How are you feeling? I know this is a big change for you."
Kaito paused to gather his thoughts, lifting a spoonful of noodles to his lips. The familiar taste brought a sense of comfort. "I'm getting used to it," he said slowly. "The doctors said I should rest as much as possible, but I don't need to be bedridden. It feels good to be out, but I know I have to take it easy."
Amaya nodded, concern etching her features. "I'm glad you're taking care of yourself. I can't imagine how hard this must be for you. You probably need help furnishing this place."
Grateful for her offer, Kaito realized he wasn't sure how to manage it all on his own. Mentally and physically drained, he had yet to build connections in Konoha. He took another bite, savoring the flavors before setting down his chopsticks. "I've been thinking a lot about Hanako," he said, his voice softening. "I always wanted her to carry on our family's legacy, especially with fuinjutsu. I didn't want our legacy to die. Now that she's… gone, I want to pass that knowledge on to someone who can."
Amaya's eyes widened with curiosity. "You mean me?"
A genuine smile broke across Kaito's face, a hint of warmth returning to his features. "You're an Uzumaki. It's only fitting that you carry on the will of our ancestors. I'd be honored to train you in fuinjutsu."
"Really? I'd love that!" Amaya exclaimed, excitement bubbling within her. "I want to learn everything I can!"
Kaito chuckled, a nostalgic note in his laughter. "I believe you have what it takes. And it'll keep me busy too," he added, a playful glint lighting up his eyes.
Their conversation flowed easily, the weight of grief momentarily lifted as they shared stories and laughter. Kaito found solace in Amaya's presence, a reminder that despite his losses, he could honor Hanako's memory by investing in Amaya. After all, in the end, his wife had believed in Amaya. Kaito was certain they would have been good friends had she survived.
In that moment, he felt a flicker of hope—Amaya wasn't just a student; she was family.
Amaya knelt before a modest, neatly maintained grave, the name "Kushina Uzumaki" engraved on the stone. As she traced the engraved letters with her fingers, a pang of guilt washed over her for not having visited sooner. "I'm sorry I haven't come in so long, Mom," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "So much has happened, and everything has been so hectic."
Taking a deep breath, she focused on the grave, preparing to share her story. "So much has happened since I joined Team 7. It's been a wild ride. You remember how I was when I first joined, right? I was so unsure of myself, feeling like I had to prove something, afraid that I couldn't trust them."
A faint smile tugged at her lips as she recalled the warmth of bonding with Sasuke and Shikamaru, Kakashi's fatherly advice, and their unwavering acceptance. "But now we're close. They are amazing, Mom. I couldn't have asked for a better team."
Her expression brightened with nostalgia. "On our first major mission, we met Haku and Zabuza. I was scared at first, but it turned out they weren't so bad after all. Zabuza had his own reasons, and Haku was just a girl who wanted to protect the one she held dear. I learned so much from them."
"Then there was the mission to the Waterfall Village. I found unexpected friendships there, too—Fu, Hanako, and Kaito. They welcomed me with open arms, and it felt so good to connect with others."
A small smile crept onto her face as she thought of Fu's infectious laughter and Hanako's kind spirit. But the smile faded, replaced by sadness. "Kaito and Hanako risked their lives to help me. Hanako was such an amazing woman, misled by Ryuto's ambitions. But in the end, she died helping me." A tear slipped down her cheek, guilt gnawing at her heart.
Her smile vanished as darker memories surfaced. "I… I killed Ryuto when he killed her. I felt so angry, and the Kyubi took over. I couldn't control it. The power was intoxicating, and it terrifies me."
Amaya's voice trembled as she clenched her fists, the weight of her doubts pressing down on her. "I keep wondering if I could have saved him instead. If I had just seen past my anger… maybe I could have helped him see the errors of his ways."
The guilt crept back into her heart, heavy and suffocating. "I don't want to be like that, Mom. I want to protect people, not hurt them. But maybe it's better this way." She thought of Kaito's sad look whenever he remembered Hanako, and it twisted her stomach.
Taking a moment to breathe, she allowed the silence to settle around her. "But there's hope, too. Kaito has settled in Konoha, and he's started teaching me fuinjutsu. I'm so excited about it! It's the legacy of the Uzumaki, right? I really hope you knew that, too. I want to carry on our family's traditions."
Her voice brightened again, tinged with enthusiasm. "Oh! We're going to participate in the Chunin Exams soon! Isn't that exciting, Mom?"
Amaya glanced up at the sky, the sun peeking through the trees, casting dappled light on her face. "I wish you were here to guide me through it all."
Touching the grave one last time, she felt a sense of comfort wash over her. "I promise to visit more often, Mom. I want to share everything with you. You're always in my heart."
With one final lingering gaze at the grave, Amaya stood up, feeling a renewed sense of determination.
The bustling streets of Konoha were abuzz with the anticipation of the upcoming Chunin Exams. Stalls were set up, and people hurried about, preparing for the event. Amidst the clamor, Fu walked with a purpose, her eyes scanning the crowd. She was eager to find Amaya before the exams began.
Turning a corner, Fu's gaze fell on a familiar figure outside a Ramen stand. Amaya and Kaito were chatting animatedly. Fu's face lit up with a bright smile as she approached.
"Amaya!" Fu called out; her voice cheerful.
Amaya turned, her eyes widening in surprise and delight. "Fu! I didn't expect to see you here!"
Kaito looked up, his expression softening at the sight of the visitor. "Hello, Fu, was it? It's good to see you."
Fu greeted Kaito with a nod before focusing on Amaya. "I'm here for the Chunin Exams! I wanted to catch up with you before things get hectic. Mind if I join you?"
"Not at all!" Amaya exclaimed, her face lighting up with excitement. "We were just about to order some ramen. I'm so glad you're here!"
As they settled into their seats, the familiar figure of Teuchi, the owner of Ichiraku Ramen, approached them with a warm smile. "Ah, Amaya! It's always a pleasure to see you!" he said, his eyes crinkling with joy.
"Hi, Teuchi! I want you to meet my friend Fu. She's here to try your famous ramen!" Amaya said, gesturing to Fu, who smiled brightly.
Teuchi chuckled, his voice booming with good cheer. "A new customer, huh? Well, I won't complain about that! I promise you won't be leaving disappointed!"
Fu's eyes sparkled with excitement. "I've heard so much about Ichiraku Ramen from Amaya! I can't wait to try it!"
Teuchi grinned. "I'll whip up something special for you. You're in for a treat!" He turned back to the kitchen, already preparing their orders with practiced ease.
As they waited, Fu looked around at the vibrant atmosphere of the ramen stand. "I can see why you love this place. It feels so welcoming."
Amaya nodded, glancing at Teuchi as he worked. "I've known him since I was little. He always makes me feel at home."
Their conversation flowed easily, punctuated by the delightful aromas wafting from the kitchen.
"What have you been up to?" Fu said,"I've been focusing on my training and getting ready for the exams."
"I can imagine," Amaya replied, her expression thoughtful. "Kakashi-sensei has been training us hard, too, especially after the last mission. We're all tired of being outclassed. Not to mention Kaito has been teaching me fuinjutsu."
Kaito smiled, a hint of pride in his voice. "Amaya's been a quick learner. She's picking up the theory faster than I expected."
Soon Teuchi returned with bowls of steaming ramen, setting them down in front of each of them. "Here you go! Dig in and enjoy!"
As they began to eat, Fu's eyes widened at the rich flavors. "Wow, this is amazing!" she exclaimed, slurping up the noodles.
Teuchi leaned against the counter, watching them with a satisfied grin. "I told you! Once you try Ichiraku Ramen, there's no going back."
Amaya smiled at Fu, her heart warmed by the moment. "See? I told you I'd introduce you to the best ramen in Konoha!"
Kaito excused himself soon enough, claiming he had errands to run and needed to rest. As he walked away, Amaya and Fu exchanged glances, a touch of uncertainty lingering between them.
"What should we do now?" Fu asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Amaya thought for a moment, her mind drifting to the many sights she cherished in Konoha. "How about I show you around the village? There are some great spots that civilians usually visit. It'll give you a chance to see more of Konoha!"
Fu's face lit up with excitement. "That sounds perfect! I've heard so much about the Hokage Monument and the Cherry Blossom Trees. I'd love to see them!"
As they strolled through the village, Amaya pointed out various landmarks. "This is the famous Tea House hidden in the leaves. It's a lovely spot where people relax and enjoy the afternoon." They reached the top of a tall tree, revealing a quaint tea house nestled among the branches. "And it has a great view of the village. Not as good as the Hokage Monument, but the tea is fantastic!"
Fu listened intently, absorbing every detail. "It's beautiful here! What else is around?"
Amaya smiled, feeling more at ease. "There's the marketplace, where people sell handmade crafts, fresh produce, and delicious treats. We can grab some sweet dango or fresh mochi if you want!"
Fu's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. "That sounds amazing! I can't wait to try real Konoha dango!"
As they continued their exploration, Amaya led Fu to a small park filled with vibrant flowers and benches where villagers gathered. "This is one of my favorite spots. It's peaceful here, and sometimes you can hear musicians playing," she said, gesturing to a group of children playing nearby, their laughter ringing through the air.
"It's so lively!" Fu exclaimed, twirling around to take it all in. "I love it!"
Amaya chuckled, her heart lifting as she watched Fu enjoy herself. "And if you keep walking, you'll find the Cherry Blossom Trees. They bloom beautifully in the spring."
"Can we go see them?" Fu asked eagerly, her eyes shining.
"Of course! Though they're past their blooming period," Amaya replied, her excitement matching Fu's.
As they continued, Fu's expression shifted to one of enthusiasm. "You know what we should do next? Go shopping! That's what girls do for fun, right?"
Amaya paused, a thoughtful look crossing her face. "Shopping? I've never really done that for fun. I mean, I've gone to the market, but I've never thought of it as a leisure activity." She hesitated, wanting to practice her fuinjutsu instead but not wanting to dampen Fu's excitement.
Fu giggled, shaking her head. "Me neither! This is so bad! I feel like we're hopeless at this whole 'girl' thing."
"I don't even know where the good shops are," Amaya admitted, her brow furrowing. "And I'm worried they'll charge us higher prices. I could probably get ripped off if we go alone."
Fu shrugged, her playful spirit still intact. "Maybe we can ask someone to join us? Someone who knows their way around."
Amaya considered this, her mind flickering to Ino. Though they weren't the closest of friends, Ino was known for her keen sense of fashion and familiarity with the latest trends. She hesitated for a moment, unsure, but ultimately relented. "I could ask Ino. She probably wouldn't mind helping us out."
Fu's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. "That's a great idea! Plus, it'll be fun to have someone with more experience to guide us. We can make it a little girls' day out!"
Amaya smiled, feeling a surge of confidence from Fu's enthusiasm. "Sure, let's find Ino then."
They made their way to the Yamanaka flower shop, where Ino was sitting behind the counter, looking visibly bored.
"Welcome to the Yamanaka's flower shop, how can I he—" Ino's voice trailed off as she noticed who it was, her smile shifting to a more strained version. "Hey there, Amaya. Is there any way I can help you?" She shot a curious look at Fu, who was marveling at the vibrant flowers.
"Hey, Ino. Fu and I were thinking of going shopping, but we don't really have much experience with this sort of thing," Amaya said, her confidence wavering slightly. "So, I thought maybe you could come with us?"
Ino hesitated for a moment, her expression thoughtful. And in that moment, Amaya was almost sure, she was going to refuse. But then, a smirk spread across her face. "Oh, Amaya, you should know I would never say no to a chance to go shopping." Without wasting a moment, Ino changed out of her work uniform, informing her mother she was stepping out.
"So, finally getting introduced to your womanly side, eh, Amaya?" Ino teased as they walked. "You're looking to impress someone?" Her eyebrow arched mischievously, and Amaya could feel her face heat up at the implication.
"Not at all! We just thought it would be fun, that's all," Amaya defended, trying to sound casual. "Fu wants to explore Konoha and buy some mementos from her time here."
Fu nodded enthusiastically, joining in on the conversation. "Exactly!"
"Well, girls, you've come to the right person! Let me lead you out of the dark ages you've been living in and into a better, brighter future."
Amaya couldn't help but smile at Ino's overdramatic antics. Maybe she had been wrong to hesitate after all. This could be fun.
The trio arrived at a bustling clothing store, its colorful displays promising a wide array of fashion. Amaya, Fu, and Ino entered with excitement, ready to dive into a world of fabrics and styles.
Amaya stepped out of the changing room in a flowing, pink sundress, She twirled around, the fabric billowing out like a flower in bloom. "What do you think?" she asks, her face a mix of excitement and uncertainty.
Ino claps her hands, grinning widely. "You look adorable! Like a cherry blossom in full bloom!"
Fu giggles, her eyes wide with admiration. "It's so cute! You should totally get it!"
Amaya spins again, her cheeks flushed with happiness, but then her smile falters. "I feel like I'm wearing a cupcake."
Ino emerged from the changing room in a glittering evening gown, her hair styled elegantly. She did a twirl, causing the skirt to shimmer in the light.
"Wow, Ino! You look like a princess!" Fu said, eyes wide with admiration.
Ino laughed, striking a regal pose. "And you two shall be my loyal subjects."
Amaya and Fu curtsied dramatically. "Your Highness, what are your orders?"
Ino pretended to think deeply. "I order you to find the best matching shoes for this gown!"
"Your highness, you're asking the wrong people." Amaya replied, a teasing smile on her face, and they all burst out laughing.
Fu emerged in a comically oversized sweater, with sleeves that practically engulfed her hands. She attempted to strike a serious pose, but the sweater made her look like a walking blanket.
"Fu, you look like you're about to hibernate for the winter!" Amaya joked.
Fu grinned and did a clumsy dance, her movements exaggerated by the oversized sweater. "I'm ready for the cozy season!"
Ino grabbed a pair of goofy, oversized glasses from a nearby rack and put them on Fu. "Now you're ready to read up on the best winter naps!"
Amaya, Fu, and Ino went wild with accessories, trying on hats, scarves, and funky jewelry. Ino donned a feathered boa and posed like a showgirl, while Fu sported a neon green hat with a propeller spinning on top.
"Look at me, I'm a fashion runway model!" Ino declared, prancing around with exaggerated flair.
Fu giggled, spinning around with the propeller hat. "And I'm a flying fashion statement!"
Amaya adorned herself with a dazzling array of bangles and a sparkly headband. "And I'm the queen of sparkle!"
They gathered in front of the mirrors for an impromptu fashion show. Amaya strutted in a sleek, modern outfit, Fu flaunted a playful dress with polka dots, and Ino wore a chic, casual ensemble.
Ino clapped her hands excitedly. "Okay, ladies, strike a pose!"
Amaya, Fu, and Ino took turns striking dramatic poses, their laughter echoing through the store.
As they wrapped up their impromptu fashion show, they sat together with bags of their new finds, exhausted but happy.
"This was so much fun!" Fu said, beaming. "I've never done anything like this before."
Amaya nodded, her smile broadening. "Me neither. It's actually nice to just let loose and be silly."
Ino winks, her trademark confidence shining through. "And we found some fabulous outfits too! We'll turn heads at the Chunin Exams! Now, let's get some food to celebrate."
As the sun rose over the Hidden Leaf Village, a buzz of excitement filled the air, signaling the start of the Chunin Exams.
Amaya stood outside the academy, her heart racing with anticipation. She had chosen her outfit carefully.
Instead of her usual jumpsuit, she now wore a fitted black combat top with orange accents that hugged her frame. The top featured short sleeves, allowing her arms freedom of movement, and it was paired with dark, durable pants that tapered at the ankles. Her feet were clad in sturdy black boots, and her hair was tied back in a practical ponytail, keeping it out of her face.
Sasuke spotted her first, his eyebrows raising slightly in surprise. "You finally changed out of that horrible jumpsuit," he remarked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Amaya laughed, feeling a rush of warmth at his compliment. "I went shopping with Ino and Fu," she replied, a smile lighting up her face. "They helped me pick this out."
Shikamaru sauntered up behind Sasuke, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He glanced at Amaya and raised an eyebrow. "That troublesome woman forced you to change, huh?" he smirked, shaking his head, though there was a softness in his tone. "At least it's good to see you and Ino becoming friends."
Amaya shrugged playfully. "What can I say? She has good taste!"
Sasuke smirked back at her. "I'd say you're better off without the jumpsuit."
Amaya's excitement bubbled over as she turned to them. "So, are you guys ready?"
"Hn," Sasuke replied nonchalantly, the familiar sound indicating either that her question was pointless or that the answer was too obvious to warrant a response. She knew he was eager for the exams, making it a mix of both.
"It's gonna be troublesome," Shikamaru complained, his voice laced with his signature laziness. "But my mom forced me to take it."
Amaya chuckled at his reply, knowing it was a classic Shikamaru response.
As they made their way to the classroom, a challenge suddenly rang out from a slightly older Konoha genin. "I want to fight you, Uchiha!"
The boy was Rock Lee, his bowl-cut hair bouncing with energy. Sasuke accepted the challenge with an uninterested nod.
The two genin faced off, and Amaya watched in awe as Lee launched himself forward with unbelievable speed. Despite the onslaught, Sasuke was able to keep up, displaying remarkable reflexes.
But the fight didn't last long. Just as Lee was about to unleash a powerful strike, a Konoha jounin with a bowl cut that mirrored Lee's stepped in, stopping the match with a swift hand. "That's enough, Lee," the jounin commanded, his tone firm yet kind. "Save your energy for the exams."
Amaya couldn't help but smirk at the situation. "Looks like you've got an admirer, Sasuke."
Sasuke shrugged, his expression unreadable. "He's just enthusiastic," he said, glancing back at Lee, who was bouncing on his feet, eager for the next opportunity.
"Or a little too eager," Shikamaru added, rolling his eyes.
With the excitement of the day finally kicking in, Amaya felt her heart race even faster as they continued to make their way to the classroom.
