'My Hero Academia: Explosion'

Can your quirk make a difference?

I've been repeating that question for eleven years, to no end. Everyone has a quirk, around 80% of the global population. A division erupted after quirks were discovered. Heroes used their powers to save lives and inspire generations. Villains were the opposite, spreading mayhem and despair.

My dream is taking the number one spot. Currently, All-Might is the raining champion, his influence motivated young children to respect their quirks. I've followed All-Might's words since I was four-years-old. Me and a friend always watched the news, seeing All-Might beat down hordes of bad guys. It made us smile every time.

Today, homeroom began like usual, except the teacher announced U.A.'s entrance exam. Once a year, middle school graduates compete in an entrance exam. U.A. High was a typical high school system, but students learned to be heroes. Pro heroes with official licenses.

"I've heard three of our students have applied to the exam. Katsuki Bakugo, who scored a perfect score on the mock test."

The student with the school uniform, ash-blonde hair, piercing red eyes, and white gloves? That's me, Katsuki Bakugo. My classmates cheered for my outstanding grades and chances of applying to U.A. But the teacher announced another student who aced the mock test and everyone fell silent.

"Yeah, don't need to study to ace a test. With beauty like this, I know I'll pass the exam." The woman with spiky brown hair and crimson eyes glanced at the teacher, a wide grin spread. She's my sister, Asano Bakugo. We might have different hair colors, but we're twins. Despite us sharing a birthday, we hated each other.

Asano jumped on her desk and ranted about how she'll be the only student to pass. "Everyone will shout my name and I'll be the queen of Japan!" Her speech ended when the teacher announced 'Izuku Midoriya'. A soft pause lingered inside the room as all heads turned to face Izuku. He's the one with the curly green hair and emerald eyes. He's also my only friend.

"HAHAHAHA! What? This nerd with no quirk applied?"

"Yes, Mrs. Bakugo. Izuku signed up last week."

"Hmph, whatever."

Class went fine, but afterward Asano targeted Izuku. She pinned him near the chalkboard, her teeth bare and clenched. "How did you apply? You're nothing but a quirkless wannabe! Take my word and quit, Deku!" She enjoyed saying that name. Been saying it since we were four.

Not wanting her to destroy the classroom, I'd walked forward and placed my hand on her shoulder. "Can you not fight? The teacher might catch you using your quirk again." Whenever Asano used her fire-breathing quirk, the alarms set off. Even though the warnings were clear, Asano doesn't enjoy being ordered.

"Fine, I'll leave your little buddy alone, but I won't go easy on you."

She shoved me aside and marched out the classroom. "Thanks, Kacchan. Are you sure you're alright with me taking the exam?" As an honest friend, I grinned and nodded. We made a promise: become the number one hero. The description made us believe we'll be rivals, but the friendlier kind.

We exited the school building, Izuku turned right, and I headed left. Mom said she was cooking meat buns, my favorite. Nothing but a pocket of protein to begin my homework session. Once at home, the scent of savory beef hit my nostrils. My stomach rumbled, saliva filled my mouth but none leaked. "You're back, son. Was school okay?"

Masaru Bakugo, my dad, was the parent who listened without question. He understood my emotional struggles, so our conversations felt casual. "Fine, Dad. When's dinner?" 5 pm was dinner, which gave me time to finish homework and practice outside. I thanked Dad and stepped into my bedroom.

Two And A Half Hours Later

"I got a call from U.A. earlier."

"Oh, really?"

"It's not the U.A. you're thinking of."

"Yeah, yeah, schools are global. What did the principal say?"

"Geez, be patient, Asano. The principal from Colbury's U.A. high school said one of our kids got a scholarship."

"A scholarship?"

"This scholarship allows them to skip the exams."

"Skip the entrance exams?"

"Yep, so no need to prove your quirk."

"Aw, yeah! I knew my intelligence and good looks will come in handy."

"Of course, Asano, because the scholarship is yours."

"WHAT!?"

I thought Asano would cheer like a drunk party girl, but it was the opposite. She slammed her hands, rocked the table, and huffed. "I can't leave Japan! Where's Colbury?!" Colbury was in America, specifically Maryland. "There's no way I'm going to America! People who don't speak the same language is a loser!" Mom wasn't having it and stood up to yank Asano's ear.

"The kind principal picked you for your straight A's, so be grateful. Besides, Katsuki got a scholarship, too." My eyes widened upon hearing I got a scholarship. My sister sat back down, her confidence swelling. She believed I got a foreign scholarship, too, but that wasn't it. The scholarship came from Musutafu's U.A. High. Now it was my turn to stand up, surprised and confused.

"They accepted me!?" I couldn't relax from the rushing excitement. Dad and Mom applauded for our hard work, but a frigid aura wrapped around Asano. Her eyes glowed bright red as she stared deep into my soul. I can already feel my skin freezing. After dinner, I dressed in my night pajamas. Tonight showed a beautiful scene of sprinkled stars. I'm this close to complete my goal and be the best hero of all time.

However, fate had other plans.

The Next Day (9am)

Today was a Saturday, so there's no school. Breakfast ended on a sticky high note with Mom's honey buns. She later called us in the living room, where a lanky woman with straight black hair stood. Her black turtleneck sweater and baggy denim jeans made the appearance confusing. Even her eye wrinkles didn't match her age.

"Hello, I'm a staff member from U.A. High. I'm here to bring unfortunate news." We sat on the couches, the woman remained standing. "It's about the scholarships Katsuki and Asano received. There's been a mistake, and we fixed it last night." Actually, they'd mixed our names accidentally.

Because of this mistake, I'll be going to America and Asano doesn't. This cheered her up as she fist pumped the air and hollered. "Come on, Asano! There's a teacher in our house!" While Mom calmed down Asano, the teacher noticed me and my sad frown. "I know this is hard, moving to an unfamiliar country." Although the teacher's words were wise, the tightness in my chest grew.

Later (8pm)

I'd mustered the courage to speak to Izuku, bring the bad news and be over with. From the scholarships to the mistake, Izuku sounded devastated. "There must've been a mistake, Kacchan." I understood his point, but there was no further evidence. In four months, after our junior high graduation, I'll take a plane to America. "Sorry for dropping the bomb, Izuku."

Since I'm leaving Japan and attending Colbury's U.A., an idea popped inside my brilliant noggin. I'd asked Izuku to do me a favor. "When I leave Japan, can you watch Asano? You know, during U.A.?" The silent showed how confused Izuku was, so I'd slowed down. "She'll begin her spoiled, reckless behavior once I'm gone. Mom can't do anything, besides yelling and tugging her ear. If she harms students or worse, let the teachers know. No matter what."

Izuku realized my favor and agreed to keep eyes on Asano in my absence. That won't happen until after graduation and entrance exams. After thanking Izuku and hanging up, my heart felt lighter, not carrying that tightness from earlier. Even though it sucked that I won't see Izuku, Mom, Dad, or anyone at U.A., at least I'm going there.

Four Months Later

Musutafu Airport (9am)

Over the past four months, I'd practiced my quirk in the woods. While I still wore gloves to school, Izuku encouraged me to take them off after class. It made me feel better about myself. The day of my departure came, when my family dropped me off at the airport. "Remember what the lady said, Katsuki. See a man with the sign. 'Mapleworth' is his name!"

Before coming here, the lady who addressed the scholarship mistake, told Mom and Dad about transfer guardians. Transfer guardians are like temporary guardians for transfer students from abroad. Colbury had a strict system whenever foreign visitors came to their town. My parents accepted the 'Transfer Guardian' program, and the lady picked a valuable person.

From my perspective, Malcolm Mapleworth is a police officer in Colbury. Until I graduate U.A. High, he'll be my responsible guardian. I'd showed the stewardess my ticket, she punched it, and I followed a crowd to an airplane. Heart pounded each time I stepped close to the vehicle. Leaving Japan wasn't on my bucket list, but anything to achieve my pro hero goal.

The plane took off, gliding through clouds. Planes weren't my best method of transportation, but seeing the clouds eased me. The tingling sensation under my skin and bones vaporized upon watching the clouds pass by. With AC blasting chilly air against my face, I'd felt calm. I hope Izuku followed my favor. He's a trusted friend, so watching over my chaotic sister won't be a problem.

Colbury Airport (1pm)

Four hours later, the plane touched down. The passengers grabbed their belongings and got off. I held my luggage in front of me, as I scanned the crowded area. Vast, but sleek, the crowd confused my vision. 'See the sign. Mapleworth is the name. Where is it?' I'd marched forward, not sure where to find Mapleworth. Gladly, he wasn't far.

A slim man, six-one tall, parted brown hair, and piercing blue eyes stood near a wooden bench. He waved his hand overhead, the other hand holding a white sign. 'Is that him?' I approached him and the bench, puzzled in who he was. "Hey there. You must be Katsuki Bakugo?" I nodded, remaining silent and still puzzled. "I'm Malcolm Mapleworth, your transfer guardian. Nice meeting you."

We shook hands and Malcolm folded the thick cardboard sign. It's amazing to see a man of his stature bend a sign bare-handed. Malcolm guided me outside the airport, the sunlight warmed our faces. Today was a humid day. The man, despite the temperature, wore a light leather coat. "Man, today got hotter the last time I checked. Let me take this off."

He removed the coat, which revealed bulging muscles and a tight dull gray tank top. Sweat glistened his hairless skin. "Wow, sir. You take good care of your body. Do you have a gym membership?" We crossed the streets, strolled down the sidewalk, and turned right. "Yeah, as a police officer, you must stay fit and alert. Weak muscles and poor health won't help you arrest crooks. Especially ones with quirks." We walked along the path until Malcolm stopped near a concrete gateway with metal bars. Behind the gate was a townhouse residence area with four five-story buildings.

"Welcome to Acorn Apartments."

"This is where you live?"

"Yeah, and my cousins. You're gonna love them."

"Cousins?"

"Oh, you believe I'm married? Hate to break it, but I'm not interested in love. Not yet, at least."

"So, how many cousins do you have?"

"In this apartment, there's two. Mary, who's around the same age as you, has that kindness to her."

"Does she go to junior high, too?"

"Yeah and she'll take the entrance exam for U.A."

"She's enrolling at U.A.?"

"You bet! With that quirks of hers, she'll make a difference."

'Make a difference?' I hung my head low, as I'd followed Malcolm to the second building. The question, 'Can my quirk make a difference?' stuck itself inside my head for eleven years. When I turned four, my quirk manifested. My palms sweat nitroglycerin-like fluid and explode on impact. It explained why I wore gloves to school, to avoid accidental damages.

One fateful day during pre-k, Asano bullied Izuku for not having a quirk. I couldn't take it, my ears bled every time Asano mocked Izuku. He was my best friend, so I protected him, but not in a mundane way. Rage clouded my judgment, and I'd attacked Asano. Explosions spread burn marks across her face, but it didn't injure her severely.

After the incident, everyone ignored me and Izuku. For Izuku, being quirkless made him unappreciated. However, I got the worse treatment. Because of my quirk, Asano said I'll never be a hero who harms people. I wanted to show her and others wrong. Anyone can be a hero.

We entered the building, took the stairs, and Malcolm faced a door. '101' was the door's number. Malcolm knocked three times, and the door opened, revealing a brown-haired girl. She had the same blue eyes as Malcolm, but her skin was lighter. A beige sweater, which wasn't baggy, and loose jeans made her casual. "Hi, Cousin Malcolm. Oh, we have a visitor."

"Mary? Meet Katsuki Bakugo, the transfer student I'd talked about last week. He'll be attending U.A. High with you." She widened her eyes at me, her arm kept the door open. We passed her, a sense of awkwardness spreading quicker between us. While Malcolm occupied himself in the kitchen, Mary shook off her awkward expression and smiled at me.

I stared deep into her sapphire eyes, a wave of calmness washed all remaining anxiety. How her hair looked vibrated my spine, but in a good way. "So, you came from Japan? Know how to speak English?" The glitter filter, which came out of nowhere, vanished after I shook it off. "Yes, I speak English perfectly fine. Huh?" Almost out of sight was Mary's hands covered in dark brown gloves.

Does her quirk require touch to activate? A loud mechanic whirling sound interrupted my thoughts. We faced the hallway, watching a door swung open. A scrawny boy with short brown hair stumbled out the room, smudges of dirt covered his face. "Ean? Another invention blew up?" Mary hurried to the closet and fetched a portable fire extinguisher. She ran into the room and drenched small burning spots. Meanwhile, Ean, the boy with the smudged up face, approached me.

"You must be the exchange student from Japan. Name's Ean Mapleworth and I'm Mary's younger brother. As you can see, I'm inventing a new support item." Ean doesn't have a quirk, but he planned on becoming an inventor. After Mary extinguished the fire, she marched out with an upset look. "That's the third time you nearly burned your room. Malcolm won't be happy to see the burnt mess." She later apologized for what her brother did. I'd took the apology, not wishing to show ungratefulness as a guest.
