Antartica, 2000.

They had been watching the giant for weeks now. It had not moved a single inch since they discovered the creature, nor did they dare to move it from its slumber. Until now.

Dr. Katsuragi was the leader of the expedition. He, along with various other scientists, were to study the sleeping giant. It was dim, as it all the light had been snuffed from its corpse. There were debates about whether it was even alive. Recently, he had been returned the spear that came along with the giant, with a new set of orders from Gendo Ikari himself.

"Stab the spear into the creature...?" Dr. Katsuragi muttered to himself. "Those months, and this is their course of action?"

He wasn't stupid. He sensed there was more to the Committee's orders than what was let on, but he couldn't voice his concerns. Ikari had already left a day ago. Any tardiness would simply have had him replaced by someone more willing. Besides... Dr. Katsuragi was curious about what would happen when contact was established.

"Alright, final preperations for the Contact Experiment?"

"Check, sir. Five minutes."

The Lance of Longinus had been prepped. Any moment now, it would be stabbed into the creature known as Adam. Dr. Katsuragi stood next to it, watching the spear as it was slowly being inserted inside.

"Four minutes... I can feel myself shivering..."

"Dad!"

A shrill, young voice broke through. Dr. Katsuragi sighed as his daughter ran up to him. The other scientists were baffled.

"You're not supposed to be here!"

Dr. Katsuragi raised his hand. "It's quite alright. I can take care of this."

He stepped toward his daughter, ignoring the confused looks from his co-workers. Misato glared at him.

"You know I can't see you right now."

"Of course not, Dad." Misato spat. "You never have the fucking time."

Dr. Katsurag sighed. "Misa-chan-"

"Don't call me that! You don't get to!"

He had to get her out of here before something bad happened. "Look, this experiment is dangerous and we need to put our best effort into ensuring this goes right. We can talk later-"

"Talk later! Why not right now!" Misato stomped a foot to the floor. "You brought me here, but all you do is work! Why even bother if you don't even see me you dickwad!"

As she kept talking, the Lance was plunged into the giant.

"L-Look Misato, I-" Dr. Katsuragi's eyes kept switching from his daughter to Adam. He gulped. "I'm just busy..."

"This is why mom divorced you, you stupid asshole!" Misato flicked her tongue. "You deserve it! When you got sad, I fucking laughed! Because that's all you do, you just hide like a coward when things get too rough!"

As it sank into Adam's chest, the area surrounding the Lance broke apart in ripples. Part of Adam broke into a large piece, hanging off to the side.

Then, Adam began to glow.

"SIR, THE GIANT! IT'S- IT'S ALIVE!"

Panic set into Dr. Katsuragi. Misato's eyes widened upon hearing it.

"Wait, what's going on?"

"Misa-chan, we don't have a choice right now." Dr. Katsuragi said. "We have to go now!"

"Dad, wait-!"

Adam opened its eye. The piece hanging over it spilled to the floor. Misato pushed her father away, as it consumed.

"GAH! DAD HELP!"

Misato struggled for her life as she begged and pleaded for help. Dr. Katsuragi could just stand there and do nothing, even as the other scientists began to run away.

"Misato... No..."

NERV HQ, Tokyo-3, 2015

"Sir! The Angels have anhilated all UN forces! They're beginning a coordinated assault on the base!

It was inconceivable. The Dead Sea Scrolls had been specific about what was supposed to happen. Instead, the scenario had been derailed before it had even begun.

Gendo Ikari had seen the reports. Mutliple Angels sprouted around the world, causing untold havoc. Germany was attacked from space by an Angel that immobilized Pilot Soryu and Unit 02 under a telepathic beam. In America, Unit 03 was possessed by another Angel that proceeded to destroy the base and Unit 04. In addition to the others appearing in NERV bases, two more Angels arrived in Tokyo-3. A large green one- identitifed as Sachiel- and an even larger one- identified as Zeruel- tore apart the military like they were paper fillings.

It was a hopeless situation, made worse by a lack of pilots. Rei Ayanami, Gendo's cherished possession, still laid in critical condition. Despite his wishes he sent the letter to his son, only to find out Shinji had disappeared from his teacher's house. Gendo was utterly frightened.

"I'm sorry, Commander..." Fuyutsuki said. "We might have to send Rei out."

"It is the only way," Gendo agreed. "But... how could this be?"

Despite the chaos, his thoughts had turned to Shinji. He never wanted him to be brought in, he to protect Shinji from being hurt. Yui might have wanted their son to pilot Unit 01, but Gendo did not want such a pain for him. With the fact Shinji ran from him three years ago only confirmed to Gendo he would never be anything but a burden to his son. Instrumentality was the only way to liberate everyone, Shinji included, from the pain.

"Sir, we managed to get a visual on the Angel!" Lt. Ibuki said. "We can enlarge it in fullscreen!"

Gendo raised an eyebrow. "Open it."

The camera blinked on, shocking everyone in the room. Gendo could only gasp.

"No... it can't be..."

On top of Sachiel's hand was a woman. She bore a cross around her necklace, wearing a red jacket and black dress. Her white hair flowed to her shoulders, and red eyes were striking. More importantly, a boy was right next to her.

"M-Miss Misato," Shinji Ikari gulped. "Are you sure this is... the only way?"

She smiled. She affectionately ruffled the top of Shinji's head.

"Pretty much, Shinji-kun." Tabris, the seveenteeth Angel said. "This is the way we can all be happy."

Sometimes I get an idea, but don't really have a story to go along with it. So I wrote this bit. It's been implied if not revealed in extracanonical material that Kaworu was made from Adam's remains, which is why he gets his soul. The idea of Misato becoming Adam, or being infected by an Angel, seeemed interesting to me. If anyone wants to take a crack at this story, you have my permission. I'd love to see the results.
