Emily picked Lily back up and they moved over to the second box, once again Oakley, Amelia and Oliver pulled off the lid together and— pink balloons flew out.
Another round of hugs and cheers erupted. "One of each!" JJ squealed, throwing herself into Emily's arms.
"Woah, Jen!" Emily said, stumbling backwards, "I know, I'm so happy," she said kissing JJ.
"Me too! This is amazing. I'm so excited for Amelia and Oliver to have a baby brother like they wanted, hell I wanted it too, but I also wanted what you had with Lily. I loved every minute of dresses and tutus and then we were blessed with two more rounds of them—now having Oliver, I'm excited for raising little boys too."
"It's going to be amazing."
The next few months flew by; it was as if they blinked, and the kids were now on summer vacation. JJ was miserable, she was 35 weeks pregnant and felt like a beached whale. "Babe, I can't do this anymore. I need them out now!" she groaned.
"You're going to be okay, Jen." Emily lifted JJ's shirt to talk to her daughter and son, "You two need to stay in there a little longer—we want you to be healthy, so keep baking."
JJ rolled her eyes as Emily spoke, "I'm ready to pop!"
"No, Jen, you're not. We need them to be healthy. We both hate hospitals, so do our children. If you pop now, our babies will spend time in the NICU which means we'll basically live in the hospital. You know I spent three weeks in the NICU with Lily, and that was just one baby."
"You're right. You hear that babies? Stay in there." She looked back up at Emily, "I'm sorry," JJ felt guilty. Those three weeks in the NICU were some of the hardest for her wife, she was completely alone. Yes, she had Fiona, but it wasn't the same—"
"It's okay, I just don't want you to have to go through what I did. It's miserable, draining, and completely devastating. After you give birth, all you want to do is hold your baby in your arms and never let go but when they are in the NICU, you can't do that."
"You're the best wife in the world," JJ said, kissing Emily. "I'm so lucky to have you."
"No Jen, I'm the lucky one."
July 2nd 3:11 am, the grandparents were called and rushed over sending 37 week pregnant JJ and Emily off to the hospital after wishing them well. The plan was for them to meet their daughters at the hospital with the kids once the babies were born. They all knew it would be much easier if Emily could focus on JJ and make sure neither were worrying about their children running through the hospital halls.
"I can't do this babe, I'm not strong enough. I can't do this, I changed my mind they need to stay in, I'm not ready!"
"Jen, breathe. You're doing great, we're both plenty ready. We have four beautiful babies and we're welcoming two more."
"We're going to have six kids! Oh my god, we can't do this! What were we thinking? We must be completely delusional! Six of everything! Do you hear me? SIX! It feels like just yesterday we had one baby, just one; now we have—oh fuckkkk this hurts! Why did you get me pregnant? You did this to me! Emily Elizabeth Prentiss you better get these babies out right now," she gutted through her teeth, almost growling.
"Oh babe, look at them! They are so perfect and so little!" JJ said, staring down at the little boy in her arms, then back at the little girl in Emily's.
"You did it, baby! I'm so proud of you," Emily leaned down to capture JJ's lips. She was in awe of JJ, the minute she got the epidural, the nerves settled as did the pain and anger; and the minute the doctor said it was time to push, JJ focused like Emily had never seen.
"Em?" JJ looked up at her wife and waited for her to look back at her, "Thank you, thank you for giving me everything in life I could ever want and more. Without you, I'd never have the most amazing family in the world."
"Oh Jen," a single tear slipped down Emily's cheek, "I love you so much but there's no way my life would be this amazing without you." JJ started to cry, but because her hormones were still raging, things got out of control quickly and her soft cries turned into sobs. "Okay, okay, calm down babe," Emily said, sitting down on the bed with JJ. "No more tears okay? How about I go get our crazy children so we can introduce them to the newest members of our family?"
"Yes! I need to see my babies." Emily put the little girl in JJ's arms, kissed all three of them then went out into the waiting room.
She was expecting to see her children and the grandparents but was met with the entire team as well. "They're here!" Emily announced, "Mom and babies are all healthy and excited to meet their siblings." Emily threw a look at Garcia to keep quiet knowing she wanted to race into the room as well but had to be patient.
"Give us fifteen minutes as a family of 8 then the grandparents can visit okay?" After a dozen 'yes's', Emily scooped Lily up, and walked away with her kids in tow.
"Okay babies, before we go into momma's room, I need you to listen to me. The twins are really small and fragile, so we need to be super gentle—"
Emily was cut off by Lily, "Me weally small too!"
"Yes you are bug," Emily laughed, "But the twins are much smaller than you are. So we need to be gentle and use inside voices okay?" After nods from the four kids, Emily pushed open the door to JJ's room.
"Hi my babies!" JJ grinned.
"Momma!" all four children said at the same time. Amelia was the first to the bed, Oliver on her heels, "They're so cute momma!"
"They have the same color hair as me!" Oliver pointed out.
"Mommy me too, pwease!" Oakley said, hoping Emily would put her on the bed. Emily scooped her up and put Lily and Oakley on the bed so they could see the twins as well.
Oakley reached out and put her hand on the little girls head, "Hi baby, I'm Oakwee."
JJ and Emily exchanged a look. This was too cute, neither could stand how adorable their children were with the twins.
"Did you and mommy decide on their names yet?" Amelia asked Emily, pleading for an answer.
"We did," she smiled, "Momma?" Emily looked at JJ so she could do the honors.
The grandparents were beyond happy to meet the two newest members of their family and absolutely loved their names. In the Prentiss household, there was only one child they had picked a name for, although it wasn't a they thing. Emily named Lily. Yes, they had given Oakley her middle name in honor of JJ's sister, but technically, only Lily's name was chosen.
That being said, Emily and JJ loved each of their babies names, even if they didn't pick any together. After finding out they were having twins, both women put a lot of thought into their names.
Lily's name had a very special meaning to Emily—Oakley's middle name had a very special meaning to JJ. Since there were two babies, the women decided they'd each get a chance for another very special meaning.
As the team filed in, there was a round of awes seeing JJ and Emily each holding a baby surrounded by their children. "Wow, you really have six children now—it's so, wow," Morgan said, eyes wide and pointing to each child as he counted them.
"I'm surprised you can count that high," Emily threw back at him. Everyone laughed as his jaw opened like he was about to speak, but never did.
"So, can we know their names now? I'm dying to know," Garcia asked, impatiently.
JJ and Emily exchanged a look and the blonde went first even though their son was the older twin. "This beautiful little girl is Brynley Grace," JJ said, annunciating her middle name then placing a kiss on the baby's forehead.
Garcia squealed softly and burst into tears before Emily could say anything, "My—you gave her, she has my middle name!" JJ nodded at her best friend. "Oh my goodness! This is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me!"
Everyone looked over to Emily while Garcia had her moment, "And this handsome little boy is Brooks Morgan Prentiss," she smiled at her best friend, seeing a tear slip from his eye.
"Em, I don't even know what to say. Thank you so much!"
"Uncle Drk crying," Lily said so innocently that Morgan burst out laughing.
"I am crying princess," Derek said, scooping Lily up off JJ's bed and peppering her with kisses while tickling her. "I just love your mommy so much!"
"Me too!" Lily said, causing tears to cover Emily's cheeks.
Derek put Lily down and moved closer to Emily and held his arms out, "May I?" she nodded and handed Brooks over to Derek. Brynley had already been stolen from JJ by the one and only Penelope Garcia.
Emily and JJ smiled at each other; their family was anything but conventional, but they loved every bit of it.
"Em, you need to go we'll be okay," JJ said, frowning at her wife as she saw the tears forming.
"I'm just going to put them to bed then I'll be back okay?"
JJ nodded, "I know and we will be fine. Our children need you, go tuck them in, take a shower, eat something."
"Are you telling me I smell?"
"No," JJ laughed, "I'm just really jealous you can shower and I can't. So, shower for the both of us."
Emily leaned down to kiss JJ, "I love you so much, call me if you need anything. Promise?"
"I promise. Now kiss the twins and give our babies kisses from me. I love you too."
Emily walked over to where the twins were sleeping and gave them each multiple kisses, "Mommy loves you so much, be good for momma until I get back."
"Mommy!" all four children screamed as Emily walked in the door.
"Hi my babies! Have you all been good for your grandparents?" she received 8 nods, one from each child and one from each grandparent as well.
"We drawed you and momma wots of pictures," Lily said, making grabby hands at Emily so she would pick her up.
"You did?" Emily asked. Lily nodded in her arms, "I can't wait to see them. How about we wait until momma and the twins get home so you can show us together?"
"Otay mommy. You stay home?"
"Not tonight bug, I have to make sure momma, your brother and your sister are okay, but we will all be home tomorrow."
Lily started to cry, followed by Oakley who also didn't like hearing Emily wasn't staying. Besides being in the hospital herself, Emily was home every night. The kids relied on their mother always being there and even though she had explained to them multiple times what would happen when JJ gave birth, nobody was happy.
Emily could see out of the corner of her eye Amelia and Oliver getting choked up too and it made her feel extremely guilty. All four of her babies were so upset she wouldn't be there all night, "I'm going to be here for bedtime, I promise. Then you'll wake up tomorrow and have a really special breakfast with your grandparents—before you know it, momma and I will be home with the babies."
"No mommy stay!" Lily screamed.
Emily was doing her best to rock Lily and Oakley in her arms but also pay attention to her two oldest. "How about we watch a movie together in mommy's bed after bath time?"
That seemed to calm everyone down a bit, she got Lily and Oakley bathed, then Oliver while Amelia took a shower; after everyone was in their pjs they piled into bed with Emily. Halfway through the movie the girls all had French braids and the littles were falling asleep. Emily took Lily into her bedroom first, singing while rocking her—she laid her in bed, kissed her goodnight and closed the door. Emily did the same thing with Oakley, then Oliver and came back for Amelia.
"You ready for bed baby?"
Amelia curled herself into Emily, "Please don't leave!"
"You're going to be okay sweet girl, I promise. Me and momma are just a phone call away. No matter what time it is, I will always pick up. Grandma and grandpa are going to sleep in our bed so they will be right here if you need anything. I pinky promise okay baby?"
Emily held out her pinky and Amelia wrapped her own around it, "Okay mommy. Will you sing to me now?" She sang Amelia to sleep, showered, then went back downstairs.
"How you doing momma bear?" Gerald asked.
"I'm tired daddy and feel guilty for leaving my babies, but I need to get back to my wife and my other babies."
"I don't know how you do it, pumpkin. But I do know that you're such an amazing mother and I'm so proud of you. You have nothing to feel guilty about, you may be superwoman, but you can't be two places at once."
"I know," Emily laughed, "Thank you, daddy, I love you."
"I love you too pumpkin."
Emily said goodbye to the four adults and drove back to the hospital to be met by her sleeping wife. She took the time to admire the twins, "Momma and I love you so much. I can't believe you're here, your siblings, momma and I have been patiently awaiting your arrival." Brooks started to fuss so Emily picked him up and went to sit down in one of the chairs.
"Hi sweet boy, you're already so loved. Do you know that? You have three big sisters and one big brother at home. You aren't even a day old and yet and you're already a big brother too. Only by a four minutes, but those four minutes make you older little one. Brynley is officially the baby of the family, you just had to make your grand entrance before her huh?"
She spent a while talking to Brooks before hearing Brynley crying, soon enough she was cradling both babies in her arms. "Let me tell you both a story."
She kissed both of them then started, "A little over three and a half years ago, I met the most beautiful woman in the whole world: your momma. I walked through the BAU doors and nearly lost all control. I never believed in love at first sight until I saw momma; her cerulean blue eyes were sparkling, her smile was brighter than ever, and she was wearing a black pencil skirt with a light blue blouse. Her luscious blonde locks were curled ever so slightly and fell past her shoulders, but what made her irresistible was the fact she was sitting on the corner of your Uncle Morgan's desk staring back at me. I asked her where your Uncle Hotch's office was, and she couldn't do anything but point; the next thing I knew, she was knocking on Uncle Hotch's door telling him they had a case and I took the time to appreciate how beautiful she was. We worked together for a month traveling around the US, sharing hotel rooms, meals, exchanging stories, and getting to know one another. We danced around each other, stealing glances, brief touches, and lingering looks the entire month and I knew I had to do something. So, one night after a case, I asked her out."
Emily smiled thinking back to the moment, how nervous she was, but excited at the same time.
"We had been dating for two months when we had a really tough case involving children; when children are involved it gets to everyone, but they always hit me harder than anyone else; reason being, I already had your sister. She was kept secret from your aunt and uncles because of a really bad man, but I knew I wanted to be with your momma and to do that, I had to tell her about Lily. I know you're probably a little confused because she's the youngest of your older siblings, but don't worry, I'll explain everything. I was so nervous momma would run for the hills learning about Lily, but do you know what? She not only accepted the fact I was a single mother she accepted Lily with open arms. The bond wasn't instant though, in fact, one of the first things momma said was 'I don't think she likes me' which wasn't true at all—Lily was hungry and cried to let me know which made momma stress out. After spending the weekend together, momma loved Lily like she was her own and my heart was so full."
Emily saw JJ stir, but she didn't open her eyes so she continued with the story.
"Momma and I became so much closer after she knew about Lily and she absolutely loved Fiona too," she choked up, "Fiona was my everything growing up. Unfortunately she only met Lily not your other siblings. Fiona was the mother I always wanted, that probably sounds silly to you because you met my mother earlier today but she wasn't always in my life the way she is now. In fact, if it wasn't for your momma, she still wouldn't be in my life. But Fiona always was. She was there when I had Lily in my tummy the way momma had you two in her tummy. Fiona, she helped me see that no matter," Emily tried to stop the tears threating to slip out.
"Gosh I've never told anyone this and even telling you two who probably don't even understand what I'm talking about, it's still very difficult." Emily brought the twins closer to her chest, "You see, Lily wasn't made the same way you two were and that terrified me. I thought because she was made by evil…" she couldn't finish the thought.
"I didn't think I'd be enough for her. I was so afraid of bringing a baby into the world after what I had gone through. How could she love me? How would I raise a little girl after seeing the things I saw? How would she ever trust me? How could I give her the life she deserved by myself? But the minute she was placed on my chest, I knew everything would be okay. Anyways, when I was trying to decide on a name for your sister, Fiona helped me. Lily means purity and innocence which she was, no matter how she was made; Fiona's middle name was Rose and I wanted nothing more than for Lily to take on all the amazing qualities of her, hence the name Lily Rose."
Emily looked up and saw JJ wiping her own tears, "Em," she said, breathlessly which only made Emily cry harder. She stood up and walked over to JJ, getting into the bed with her and handing over their little girl. "That's so beautiful, babe. Lily is perfect because she has you as her mother. You've shown her what love is and provided her an amazing life. Why didn't you ever tell me what her name meant?"
"I don't know, I guess it was one of those things only Fiona and I knew. I wasn't planning on telling anyone the meaning behind her name except these two—at least I thought as much until I found out you were awake. How much of that did you hear?"
"All of it—I can't believe you remember what I was wearing when we met," JJ smiled, blushing as she pulled Brynley closer to her. "Can you finish the story?"
Emily leaned over and kissed JJ, then focused on telling her story, "Your momma and I got married and when we came back from our honeymoon, I felt like my heart was cut out of my chest." She started to cry and JJ held her close, "Fiona had been killed by a drunk driver, it was as if I had lost my mother. At the time, the relationship with your grandmother and I was still new, not nearly as strong as it is now and after grandpa told me about Fiona, I didn't know what to do. I had a lot to consider—providing for our family, taking care of Lily and your momma and my dream job. What I realized was as long as I had momma and your sister Lily, I was happy. I worked a bit longer at the FBI with your aunt and uncles, then I quit so momma and I could grow our family."
JJ kissed Emily's cheek before she continued, "One morning momma and I got a phone call and two hours later your sister Oakley was brought into our home. She was only three at the time and the cutest little girl who loved sucking her thumb. Gosh I hope you two don't pick up that habit, although cute, it's very unsanitary." JJ laughed at that.
"A bit of time went by and once again, I got a phone call in the middle of the night but this time, it was from momma. I was so nervous hearing how scared she was and raced to the office to see her while your Uncle Spence stayed with Lily and Oakley. When I got there, I met your oldest sister Amelia. And guess what? She came home with us. We went through a lot as a family, too much for your older sisters if anyone asked me, but we got through it. We also made so many fun memories together which made up for all the bad. The Prentiss family can get through anything."
Brooks started to fuss and Emily soothed him, "Don't worry sweet boy, you and your sister are the next part of my story." It was as if Brooks knew what his mother was saying because he settled down immediately. "Momma and I talked about having a baby for a while but we didn't actually do anything until your sister Amelia gave us a push. One night I was putting her to bed and we talked for awhile about how she wanted a baby brother. Don't worry Brynley, she was just as excited about you too," Emily leaned down to press a kiss to her forehead.
"Momma got pregnant soon after and when you two were in her tummy, Oliver came into our life. You probably think we are crazy, but I told your momma a long time ago, it's never enough. I know that doesn't mean anything to you right now, but as you grow up, you'll understand. I guess you could say it's a family motto."
Emily smiled at JJ, capturing her lips, "You see, momma and I always wanted a big family—we used to go on walks every night after work with Lily to watch the sunset and we'd talk about our future. We saw so much pain and heartache at work and wanted to provide some amazing children the life they deserved so we both agreed adoption would come first. I carried a baby in my tummy and momma wanted to as well but we choose to adopt first because we're both young. If we were older, we'd never be able to have six children, you crazy kids are a lot of work ya know? Momma and I spent so much time talking about our future and when she would say anything she thought was 'too crazy' she'd backtrack immediately as she saw my eyes go wide; every time that happened, I reassured her it was never enough. You two make number 5 and 6 of our crazy family and I know I said to momma I was done, but a part of me still feels like it's never enough."
Emily was cut off as a nurse walked in with tears streaking her cheeks, "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop, it's completely unprofessional I just, hearing a part of your story is so amazing. I saw your family in here earlier and I was in awe seeing how many beautiful kids you have. Each one got the same amount of attention from you even though you have newborns. You two are such incredible mothers—I'm so sorry," the nurse said, looking down at her feet.
"It's okay, honey," Emily said, seeing the young nurse who looked like she had just graduated, "Come here." The nurse walked over towards the bed and Emily handed Brooks over to JJ so she could hug her.
The young nurse broke down, "This is so unprofessional, I'm so sorry," she choked out through her sobs.
"It's okay, sweetie. May I ask you something?" Emily said, rubbing the nurses back. Feeling her nod she continued, "How long has it been?"
The nurse pulled back a little so she could look into Emily's eyes, "How—how did you know?"
JJ was watching the interaction and had no idea what Emily meant but felt awful for the young nurse. "Call it mothers' intuition," Emily said.
"2 months."
"Oh honey," Emily pulled her close and kissed the side of her head. "I'm so sorry. I know it doesn't feel like it now but it will get better. Eventually, the pain will subside and you'll be left with nothing but the amazing memories you had with her. I promise you that."
JJ watched in awe, I love how Emily just knows, she always knows.
"I'm sorry, I'm supposed to be checking on your wife and your babies but here I am soaking your shirt with my tears."
The nurse tried to pull away but Emily held on tighter, "Shh, shh, shh, let yourself break down. I'm here, my wife and children will still be here when you're done." Emily returned the smile at her wife and mouthed 'I love you' as the nurse broke down in her arms.
"You met my mother earlier, but can I tell you something?" the nurse nodded, "She didn't raise me. I was raised by nannies because she was an ambassador and was always busy. We moved around a lot when I was younger and when I was 15, I got pregnant. Because of that, my mother pretty much disowned me. I say pretty much because I didn't really exist to her anyways. She forced me to get an abortion then sent me off to boarding school. When I fell pregnant again at 28, I was completely alone until I called the nanny who raised me most of my life. She was more of a mother to me than my own, she helped me raise my daughter while I worked my dream job. She was killed the day Jennifer and I got home from our honeymoon by a drunk driver and I felt like someone ripped my heart out of my chest. She always sang me the most beautiful Italian lullaby, a lullaby I sing to all four of our children every night. For the first month after she died, I could barely sing it because the memories were too painful; but now, it's one of best parts of my day because as I sing to my babies, I remember all the things we did together. Right now it feels like the world is crashing down on you, I know it does honey, but give it another few months and you'll be able to relive those memories and smile."
The nurse was a blubbering mess by now in her arms and Emily kissed her head again while squeezing a bit tighter. She looked up to see JJ who was crying as well.
"Thank you for sharing that with me. My mom was my best friend, she was there for me through it all. My dad and my brother are two peas in a pod, just like my mom and I were but now that she's gone, I feel so lost. Oh gosh, here I am venting my own problems on you I'm so sorry I—"
Emily cut her off, "Don't apologize for feeling your emotions. You needed this. It's perfectly okay."
"Is this what you do?"
Emily tilted her head, "What do you mean?"
"Sorry umm, I mean, are you a therapist?" the nurse asked.
"No. Well, before joining the FBI I worked with traumatized children, but that was many, many years ago."
"You're really great at it. I know I'm not a child, but you really know what to do and say. I mean, you knew what happened before I opened my mouth."
"Em's the best at that," JJ said, causing both women to turn and look at her. "She looks at our children and knows just what they need. When they cry, she knows exactly what it means and what to do. I'm still in awe at her abilities to read people after all these years."
"You two are really lucky to have each other. I'm so sorry for taking away family time, I know how unprofessional this was."
"You're fine, trust me!" JJ said, smiling at the young nurse. "You're more than welcome to crash our party."
"Oh yeah, we were planning a rager with our newborns," Emily rolled her eyes at JJ, then smiled at the nurse.
They all laughed, "I appreciate that. Now that I've soaked your shirt, I should probably do my job. How are you feeling Mrs. Prentiss?" Receiving a look from JJ, she corrected herself. "How are you feeling, Jennifer?"
"I'm great, Hannah, thank you."
"Do you need anything?"
"No, we're good. Although, it's very quiet compared to our house with our four crazy kids."
"I seriously don't know how you two do it," the nurse said.
"Never enough," the two mothers said in unison.
"I'm so happy, babe," JJ said, snuggling up to Emily later that night. The twins had been asleep for a few hours and the mothers were cuddling in JJ's hospital bed.
"Me too, I'm so lucky," Emily leaned over and kissed JJ.
"We're both lucky. We have six beautiful, healthy children, an amazing family, and most importantly, I have you by my side. I love you, babe."
"I love you too, Jen. I'll be right back okay?"
JJ already knew where Emily was going and loved it, "Take your time, we'll be here."
Emily walked out of the room and found JJ's nurse, "Hey Hannah, do you have a minute?"
Hannah looked up at Emily, "Is everything okay?"
"Yes, I just wanted to speak with you." The two walked down the hallway so they had a little privacy, "I wanted to give you my phone number, Jen's number is on there as well," Emily said, handing her a business card. "If you ever need to talk, we're both here. Always."
Hannah threw her arms around Emily's neck, "Thank you so much. I don't even have words to express how grateful I am for you both."
"You're very welcome, thank you for taking care of my family." Emily kissed the side of the nurses head again. "You're going to be okay, honey."
The next day, JJ and Emily were heading home with the twins. "Babe, you need to be wheeled out of here, you know the rules." Emily said to JJ who was about to protest. She picked up both car seats while the nurse helped JJ into the wheelchair. "Let's go home."
The Prentiss women were so happy to be home; when they walked in, they were met with their children, parents and a huge banner.
Welcome Home Brooks and Brynley! We Love You!
"Oh I love it so much my beautiful babies! Thank you." JJ said, opening her arms to hug her children.
Emily set the car seats down on the couch and joined the group hug, "We missed you all so much!"
"Can I hold my baby brother?" Oliver asked shyly.
"Oh I want to hold my baby sister!" Amelia perked up.
"You can all hold them, but first you need to wash your hands."
The kids took off running towards the bathroom, causing the adults to laugh. Emily and JJ each reached into a car seat to grab a baby then sat down on the couch and waited for the chaos.
Amelia and Oliver appeared first each holding out their arms as they sat down in the middle of JJ and Emily. Lily crawled into Emily's lap so she could see Brooks, and Oakley squeezed between JJ and Amelia so she could see Brynley. The grandparents took picture after picture until JJ looked up and caught them, "Oh god, I look terrible, why didn't you tell me to fix my hair at least?"
"You look great, Jenny!" Allen said, smiling at his daughter. "We have such a beautiful family."
"We're very blessed," Sandy agreed.
"I can't believe we have six grandchildren, Lizzie." Gerald said, smiling at his wife.
"Our darling Emily is all grown up, Gerald. I'm so proud of her."
Emily heard her mother and looked up at her tears streaking her cheeks then turned back to look at her children. "This is pure bliss."
JJ looked over at her wife, "Pure bliss."
