Helen began the lesson, "What Floyd is trying to explain to you is really quite simple. Mayberry is tied to another location in the world. The connection is spiritual. Satan, who you have been referring to as McBeevee, has opened a gateway in Mayberry that creates this connection. With this connection, anything that happens in Mayberry will also happen at that other location, the nation of Kisnu. Think of it as a reflection or an echo. These echoes happen there at a larger scale."

Andy sat with a most placid, uninterested expression.

Helen continued, "Take for instance, when your mafia friends executed the cult members, that echo caused members of the parliament in Kisnu to be executed. When you evacuated Mayberry, an actual chemical spill caused the evacuation at the capital in Kisnu. Satan is using Mayberry's events to trigger a very large war, the apocalypse, actually. If he succeeds, the war will be defined on his terms, and he will rule the entire world." She paused and said, "You look as though you don't believe me."

"That McBeevee is Satan? Oh, yeah. I buy that. I've seen stuff," Andy said. "And that thing about Mayberry being connected to this other country or whatever, I'll take your word for it. What I don't understand is what you think I can do about it. I saw at least twenty men pump bullets into McBeevee... Satan... and didn't lay a scratch on him."

Floyd said, "No one is asking you to kill Satan. The gateway needs to be closed. If the gate is closed, Satan can't continue this plan."

Andy pivoted in his seat towards Floyd, "You don't think someone is going to just march in there and close this gate thing, do you? Wouldn't it make sense that McBeevee is going to be guarding it? Have you thought of that?" Andy pointed at Helen, "She's the one with superpowers. Send her in."

Helen replied, "Haven't you been listening? Anything that happens in Mayberry is reflected to the war in Kisnu. If I used my powers in Mayberry, it would almost be equivalent to dropping an atomic bomb over there."

"It has to be done correctly," said Floyd.

"Well, you do it then," said Andy to Floyd. "I saw you with a set of huge wings. I can only guess if McBeevee is Satan you must be some sort of angel on the other side."

Floyd said, "I can't be directly involved. When I saved your life from Satan, I used direct involvement."

Helen said, "Floyd lost his wings for that involvement. He paid a large price for that action. And, the secrets he has divulged to us, he will no doubt pay a price for that."

"Well, it just sounds like we are screwed," Andy remarked. "We should just find a place to hunker down and hide."

Floyd said, "Once the apocalypse is triggered, there will be no place to hide for anyone."

"I don't even know how someone is going to get close to that gate thing without taking Satan down. We need the National Guard to go in guns blazing."

Helen shook her head very slowly, "Andy, I have been trying to explain to you..."

Andy stood and fanned his hand at her, "I know, I know. It would be magnified over there and that would be bad."

"That's correct," Helen said. "Almost any use of force by us plays right into Satan's hands."

Andy shrugged, "Then what do we do?"

Floyd looked over at Helen, "I think it's time we show him."

Helen left the room, and when she returned moments later, she was accompanied by Barney Fife. Andy could feel his veins go cold; beads of sweat popped out of the pores on his forehead. He smiled and stood, "Barney," and rushed to Barney and embraced him. "Barney, I can't believe it. Oh, thank goodness."

Barney did not hug back, he held a demeanor of calmness and said, "No, Andy."

Andy released the hug and took a step back, "No what?"

Barney held up his left hand and showed Andy that the hand had six fingers. Andy took another step back, "You're not the real Barney."

Floyd said, "No, he's not."

The Barney clone said, "But I can take you to the real Barney."

Andy asked, "He's still alive?"

"Not really," Floyd said.

"I'm not understanding any of this part," said Andy.

The Barney clone requested, "Follow me."

The true Barney Fife lied on a hospital bed in another room in the compound. There was an I.V. inserted into his arm. He rested motionless on the bed, his chest raising and lowering slowly, his eyes closed. There were two other Barney clones in room, both dressed as a doctor from a large hospital. Andy stood over the true Barney and lifted Barney's left hand. There should have only been four fingers on this hand if it were the real Barney, actually three digits total, for one Barney's fingers had been cut off. Instead, every finger was present, but one finger had a ring of stitches around the base of it.

Andy asked, "You stitched a new finger on him?"

One of the doctor Barneys said, "Yes, we did. We also replaced his heart. The gunshot was direct hit."

Andy asked the doctor Barney, "His heart? Where in the world did you get a heart to put in him?"

The doctor Barney motioned at himself and the other doctor Barney and said, "Clones. We farmed what we needed."

"So, he is still alive," Andy said.

Floyd said, "No, he's not Andy. He is in limbo."

Andy raised an eyebrow and looked over at Helen, "Want to explain that one to me?"

Helen said, "There has been a demon working in Mayberry for a very long time. Think of the demon as the equal but opposite of Floyd in every way."

"Who's the demon?" Andy asked.

"Earnest T. Bass," said Helen.

Andy nodded in a matter-of-fact method, "That makes sense."

"He made a critical mistake," said Helen. "When Barney was shot, he was shot by a man who knew who Earnest T. was. Earnest had let him in on that secret, which is..."

Andy finished the statement, "Direct involvement."

"Yes," Helen said. "Had it not been for that, Barney would indeed be dead now. It was an unnatural death. We have Barney's body stabilized, but his soul is in limbo."

Andy asked, "Is there any chance of him ever coming back?"

Floyd said, "He has to. He is the key to closing the gate. Only Barney can do that."

Helen said, "It's because he was the last virtuous person in Mayberry. When he was removed from Mayberry, Satan was free and clear to create the tether and gateway. He is the only person who can close the gate."

"How do we get him out of limbo?" Andy asked.

Floyd placed a hand on Andy's shoulder, "You have to go get him."

Andy shifted his shoulder from beneath the hand and moved away from Floyd, "Go get him? Out of limbo? That sounds a lot like dying."

Helen said, "You're the only one he would trust and follow out."

Floyd said, "No matter all the corrupt business you were in, Andy, Barney never lost faith and hope in you. He never stopped believing in you."

"He always was a nut," Andy said. "And the two of you are nuts if you think I am going to let you kill me and place me in limbo."

"We don't have to kill you," Helen said. "We only have to place you in rhythm with limbo. Then you can enter the portal and save Barney."

"I'm going to survive it?" Andy asked. "This is some kind of spirit magic, isn't it?"

Floyd said, "It is."

Andy contemplated the situation for a moment. Then he said, "Okay. I'll go get him. But after that, I'm done. It's up to you guys."

Helen took Andy by the arm and sat him in a chair, she moved and stood behind him. As she did this, Floyd said, "Limbo will be confusing. Keep your wits about you. Barney could give some resistance; he may be confused. You will have to convince him to come back to this side."

Andy nodded, "Don't you worry. I'll get him out if I have to drag him kicking and screaming."

Helen instructed Andy, "Close your eyes," and he did so.

Andy asked one last time, "You sure this ain't going to kill me?"

Helen said, "It's absolutely safe." Andy continued to keep his eyes shut. Helen spread out her two open palms and slapped Andy's ears with great force. Andy's head rocked forward; his eyes closed.

One of the doctor Barneys grabbed Andy's wrist and checked his pulse, "He's still alive. The pulse is nice and strong."

Floyd asked, "You didn't crack his skull, did you?"

Helen started, "Oh! Gosh I hope not." She inspected Andy's head with her fingertips. "No, his skull is intact."

Floyd then replaced Helen by standing behind Andy and spanned his hands out as though he towards Andy. A web of bluish energy encased the Sheriff. Floyd said, "I hope he does this quickly. I don't know how long I can hold the portal open."
