Floyd was still holding the portal open, but his arms trembled, and his forehead was sprinkled with beads of sweat. Helen, who was pacing the room, at times looking at the dormant Barney and the unconscious Andy, asked Floyd, "How are you doing?"
Floyd said, "I don't know how long I can keep this open. They need to hurry."
Helen asked, "Is there anything I can do to help?"
Floyd shook his head, "No. The more I am directly involved, the weaker I get."
Helen said, "You have to hold on, Floyd. Even when he makes it back, Barney is going to need to you."
"I will do the best I can."
Outside the room, the clones of Barney were working at many different tasks. Some of them were inspecting test tubes in one room, in another room were two clones listening to the radio announcer speak of the threats of a world war, one lone Barney was pushing a broom down a long hallway. At the end of this hallway was the door that led outside their compound, which was a sprawling warehouse with no windows. On the other side of the door, Earnest T. leaned against it, his palms and ear pressed to the door. Being a demon, his hearing was much stronger than human hearing. Earnest smiled and whispered, "I've found them."
Earnest backed from the door and threw open his black wings, taking to the sky. He soon vanished over the treetops which created the edge of the deep forest.
Andy spoke to the elderly female leader of the spirit group; he was still captured by the spirits of Limbo, who held him pressed down to his knees, "You have to let us go."
She said, "You may leave. But we go with you."
"Do you think the guardian lady thing will let you leave? She seems pretty strict," Andy argued.
The old woman barked back at him, "You are a living man in Limbo, which is also against the rules. If she has let you in, it has to be very important. If it's very important... she will want you to return. And if you return, we return."
Andy said, "I am a Sheriff in the real world. Hostage situations never pan out."
The woman stood over him and said, "Don't think we can't permanently separate your soul from your body. You won't be a visitor to death, you will be a resident."
Suddenly, a great blast of wind began to blow, shaking hair and clothing on all of them. Members of the limbo spirit mob began to blow away like leaves taken by a fall time gust. The old woman pushed her way through the crowd to find the source of the wind, though she already knew deep inside what it had to be. She reached the outer edge of the crowd, where the most spirits were being taken away by the wind and saw the source. Three of the smaller beings that resembled the Guardian of Limbo held their arms pushed out, and from there the wind emanated. Earlier, one of the creatures had witnessed the suspicious assembly of Limbo residents and considered that it was up to no good. Soon most of the spirts were blown away as the creatures walked steadily towards them. The old woman began to slide along the smooth floor of Limbo. She leaned into the wind and slowed her skid, her face twisted with the type of surprise that was most unwelcome, and she turned this look on Andy, who in return sent her an insulting little palm wave, bidding her farewell. She was blown away at that moment, so quickly she vanished in a blur.
The spirits who held Andy turned him loose and ran into the darkness. The wind subsided. The creatures who had saved them approached, one was solid white with green wings, "We are Sabris, protectors and enforcers inside Limbo."
Andy stood, "I am Andy Taylor, and this is Barney Fife."
"We know who you are, living man. You must hurry. The apocalypse draws near."
Barney took Andy by the wrist, "Andy... I don't want to go back."
"Barney, what do you mean? You don't want to stay here. You can come back and live."
"For what?" Barney asked. "Everything has changed back home. I don't even recognize it anymore. You've changed, too."
Andy gave a most uncomfortable laugh, "Me? I haven't changed." The two Sabris looked upon Andy with great curiosity.
"You do bad things. You hurt people. You hurt me."
Andy then said in a most stern voice, "Well, I'm here, ain't I? I came to get you."
Barney said, "I'm not going back."
Andy had just enough time to open his mouth, but not enough time to say anything. A bolt of fire lit the darkness and struck one of the Sabris, the tan one with orange wings. The Sabris was not dead but was wounded badly. It fell to the floor, its left side charred. Andy, Barney, and the remaining Sabris looked to the direction where the flaming weapon had come. Flying towards them at great speed was Titan. He pulled back his invisible bow again and released another bolt of flames.
The Sabris took its spear like weapon and smacked the bolt to the floor. It then threw out one hand and a gust of wind assailed Titan, catching his wings, slowing him, then forcing him backwards.
Deep in the forest outside Mayberry where the gateway to Hell laid open and spewed forth its terrible power, Earnest T. had landed and knelt before Satan. "Oh, magnificent one. I have found them."
Satan's eyes bulged and his face brightened, "You?"
"Yes, my lord."
Satan took Earnest T. by the shoulders and stood him, "You are sure of this?"
"I am certain my lord."
Satan laughed and kissed Earnest on the cheek, "Oh, my faithful servant. You have done well." Satan turned and called, "Sergeant Wrath, come forth."
A demon, holding a large sword, appeared almost instantly to Satan's side. Satan said to him, "Sergeant Wrath, our brilliant influencer Earnest has found our enemies. Follow him. Destroy them."
Wrath bowed his head and then held his sword high. It shined brightly, and from the darkness beyond in the wooded surroundings, dozens of his soldiers flew high into the sky.
Earnest smiled and spread forth his wings, before he lifted away, Satan warned him, "Earnest, your only job is to lead them. Then you do nothing."
Earnest nodded and flew upward, Wrath followed closely.
The Lady Guardian of Limbo had laid comatose for several minutes. She was finally coming to; she sat up slowly. Her jaw was sore, obviously this is where Titan had finally flattened her, and she rocked her jaw back and forth. "Bastard," she whispered.
She stood and arched her head back and fluttered her wings at an incredible rate. A sound much like a swarm of cicadas rang out and every Sabri who protected Limbo became alert. Not only was the chirping loud, but it also held a language which the Sabri could understand as plainly as spoken. It explained to them an unwanted demon was loose in their domain and should be stopped, and it also told of the two souls that needed to escape from Limbo as quickly as possible.
Dozens upon dozens of the Sabri were in the air searching out the demon and the two helpless souls. It did not take them long to spot the already ensuing battle.
Titan had pushed through the wind of the one Sabris who guarded Andy and Barney. It had thrown its lance at the demon, and the demon had rolled in flight thereby dodging the lance. Titan was upon the Sabris and pummeled it headlong. The Sabris was flipped and sprawled out on its back; Titan had rolled up onto his feet with great agility. The Sabris tried to stand, but Titan pulled back the invisible bow and scored a hit on the Sabis' shoulder, flipping it backward and down again. "Stay down," Titan warned.
Titan turned to see Andy and Barney, who had taken advantage of the battle to flee. Titan smiled at the notion of the two humans believing they could outrun him. He took off into the air and overtook them quickly. He was directly above them, ready to come down on top of them, when a lance impaled his right wing. He rolled in the air again, but this time from no control of his own, and came crashing down. He quickly stood and pulled the lance from his wing. Another lance was shooting towards him, and he caught it, sidestepping it slightly. He squeezed the lance and burnt it to ash and smoke.
A dozen Sabri were soon surrounding him and a fisticuff between they and the demon immediately broke out. Andy and Barney slowed and turned to look upon the battle, and they could see that Titan was slowly winning. Two Sabri swooped down and locked their forearms beneath Andy's and Barney's arm pits and lifted them into flight. More Sabri were landing to battle the demon as Andy and Barney were taken away swiftly.
A quarter of a mile from the compound where Floyd, Helen, and the Barney clones resided, an Otis was standing by a van. He kept a steady eye on the horizon, and he saw a mass of shapes heading his way. He took his binoculars and peered at the shapes. It was demons; they had finally found them. Otis reached into the van and grabbed a radio microphone, "Mayday, mayday. Infestation in ten. I repeat, infestation in ten. Evacuate. Evacuate."
Alarms blared throughout the compound and the Barneys stopped what they were doing and began to make for the emergency doors in the rear. One Barney opened the door to the room where Floyd and Helen stood guard over Andy's and Barney's physical bodies. He declared, "We must evacuate now. The transports will be leaving with or without you." The Barney turned and fled.
Floyd dropped his hands and the bluish aura around Andy faded away. Helen shouted, "What are you doing?"
"We have to go. I can't hold the portal if they are being moved."
"You can open it back up though, right?"
Floyd shook his head, "No. It's closed for good. They will have to find another way."
Helen was in disbelief, "How are they going to do that?"
Floyd replied, "The best we can do now is protect their bodies. If the bodies are destroyed, it will not matter if they make it out."
"Wonderful," Helen growled.
Floyd grabbed her hand, "You must get them to the transports and take them to the contingency point."
Helen placed a hand on her chest and took a deep breath, exhaling through pursed lips, "Okay. I can carry them," her eyes began to cast a green glow. "Let's go."
Floyd said, "I'm staying behind."
Helen was panicked again, "You can't stay behind. Who will instruct Barney."
"I will catch up with you later," Floyd said as he went to a door that was in the opposite direction of evacuation. "I will stall them so you can escape."
Helen took one of the unconscious law officers under each arm and ran from the room. She was soon outdoors and seated in the back of a black van. To the left and right of her, two school buses, loaded with Barney clones, had their rear doors closed from inside and sped away. The Otis that had called in the alert was in the driver's seat of the van. He looked back and asked, "Where's Floyd?"
Helen said, "Go. He's not coming."
Otis opened his door and started getting out of the van when Helen said, "Otis, don't. He's not coming. We have to leave."
Otis returned to the driver's seat and closed his door. He pulled the gear stick, and the van spun dirt from beneath the rear tires as it sped away. He said, "We need him."
Helen said, "I know, he said he would catch up."
Floyd was on the roof of the compound with his hands extended. A dark, ominous cloud developed high above him. His eyes glowed, and he waited until the horde of demons were almost on him. The sky flashed with the light of thousands of bolts of electricity, and the oncoming demons were fried and thrown from the sky. Some fell to the roof top; some fell to the ground. Wrath had fallen to the roof top but was not dead, for he was stronger than the demons he led. Floyd was down on his knees, one hand also down on the roof. He coughed and wheezed. Wrath stood and approached Floyd, his sword raised above his head, ready to remove Floyd's head from his body. Floyd raised his free hand, and his eyes glowed once more, a thick bolt of lightning struck Wrath and when the intense flash was gone, there was only a scorched spot and Wrath's sword left behind. Floyd collapsed, face down.
Another demon landed on the rooftop; it was Earnest T. He smiled and approached Floyd's motionless form.
The two Sabris with Andy and Barney in carriage landed by the Lady Guardian. Andy's eyes tightened while he searched the mist and the darkness. "Where's the portal?"
The Lady Guardian answered, "I'm afraid it has closed."
Andy's eyes widened but he was speechless.
Instead, another voice spoke, it was Titan, and he advanced towards them, his right wing slanting oddly from its wound. "Turn them over to me."
"No," the Lady Guardian replied to the demon.
He tensed his muscles and continued towards her, "Did you learn nothing last time?"
She answered, "Let's find out."
