Chapter 41
Honoring the Dead
Wave stood there, looking at Bols's grave as his wife and daughter were kneeling in front of it. They wore a black gown to honor the death of Bols. Run stood next to him as he looked at Wave.
"How are they holding up?" Run asked.
Wave looked at them, "Still grieving, but thanks to the General giving funds to them, I think they'll be fine,"
"I see…," Run looked at the family.
'No wonder why her soldiers have such fighting spirit, she rewards them after every battle,' Run thought to himself.
He looked at Wave as he clearly was still upset at himself. "Wave, are you still…?"
"I am…no matter what I do I can't get it out of my head," Wave answered.
Run nodded as he too remembered his brief confrontation with Deku. A boy who went toe to toe with Esdeath.
"No matter how you look at it, I lost and I was the reason we failed the mission," Wave said.
"Wave it wasn't your fault, I couldn't stop him from getting there,"
Wave turned to Run, "Even so, he had so many trump cards that I wasn't able to see through it,"
They then heard footsteps approaching them as they turned to see Bols' family walling up to them, Kije, his wife bowed her head, "Thank you for coming you two,"
They both bowed in response, "He was our comrade, escorting you was a small token to him," Run said.
Kije smiled as she looked at the grave, "Still, Logue will have to live without her father, even so I will make sure she has a good life,"
Wave clenched his fist, "I'm sorry, if only I was stronger I would've…"
Kije looked at Wave, "It is not your fault, Bols knew what he was getting into, he even told me that his past sins will catch up to him someday,"
She frowned, "I just wish it didn't happen so suddenly,"
"Night Raid will pay, we will bring them to justice,"
Kije looked at them as she nodded but she had one concern, "About that Deku person,"
Wave looked up at her, "I heard he's apart of Night Raid as well but he goes around and saves people,"
"Even so, he still protects that group-"
"That is true but, the people in the capital are brushing that aside, he saves people, showing them hope. It makes you question, why is he fighting so hard for the people and yet protects the group that terrorizes the Empire," Kije asked.
Wave widened his eyes, and Deku's words played back in his head again. He still questioned it, no matter where he went, Deku was always the talk.
"Sorry for bothering you with my questions," she apologized.
Run shook his head, "It's completely fine," he said.
Kije then looked at the grave, "I should buy some flowers for him, I think he would like that,"The wind blew as Wave looked up in the sky.
Meanwhile in the Capital
"I'm sorry kid but I don't think I can fix this, these necklaces are damaged beyond repair," the jeweler said to Izuku as the boy sighed.
"It's no problem, just wanted to see if they can be fixed,"
"I can always show you some that we have," the jeweler offered.
Izuku shook his head, "Thanks but I'm good,"
He turned as he looked at the white haired little girl, "Eri come on,"
Eri turned to Izuku as she pulled her hoodie over her head as she walked up to Izuku and held his hand.
"Stay safe out there Deku, there has been a new secret police patrolling these areas, they are ruthless," he warned him.
Izuku nodded as they exited the store. He pulled his hoodie over his head. Both of them wearing cloaks, "Alright Eri, let's get something to eat and then we can head home,"
Eri smiled at him and nodded.
Before all of this
Izuku kept looking at the broken necklaces at the table as he contemplated on whether to head to a jewelry store to get it fix or find something that was similar to the necklaces.
Akame walked by as she saw him staring hard at the broken jewelry. She poked his cheek as Izuku turned towards her as she smile, "Staring at them won't fix it you know,"
Izuku blushed a bit, "I'm just thinking about how and where to fix them,"
Akame looked at the necklaces, "There is a jewelry store in town that is funded by HQ, you can check there," Akame pointed out.
Izuku nodded, "I'll check it out then,"
Akame smiled, "Just be safe now, there are wanted posters of your face now,"
Izuku stopped as he completely forgot, it was pointless to wear the mask now.
As the two were talking, Najenda walked in the room as she saw the two.
She smirked, "Oh? Sorry, was I interrupting something?"
Akame and Izuku shook there head, "No we were just discussing where to get these necklaces fixed,"
Izuku showed her, Najenda examined them, "You're better off getting new ones,"
Izuku looked at the necklaces as he shook his head, "It has to be these ones…"
Izuku remembered the village chief and his words to him, the meaning of these necklaces. "I'll try the jewelry store that Akame suggested but if that doesn't work, I'll take a trip to that village," Izuku said.
Najenda sighed as she crossed her arms, "If you're going to the city then I suggest you take Eri with you,"
Izuku and Akame swiftly turned their heads at her, "What?!"
They both raised their voices as Najenda raised her brow, "I mean, she hasn't really seen how the city is and she's been cooped up at the base for too long, I think it would be a nice change of pace,"
"But the capital is dangerous, even now. There's a secret police force that has been on watch, we don't know what would happen," Akame stated her worries.
Izuku was in agreement with her.
"It'll be fine besides, I wouldn't offer this idea if it weren't for Izuku," Najenda reassured them.
"Me?" Izuku tilted his head in confusion.
"I mean, if anything, people will see you and not one of them will bat an eye towards you, or report you to the authorities," Najenda explained.
"Why is that?" Izuku kept asking.
"Your influence has spread across the Empire and the Imperial forces are being overwhelmed with the Revolutionary Army and riots breaking out across the nation," Najenda said.
"Izuku you truly have inspired others to see the true colors of the Empire, people are bound to see you more as a celebrity than a criminal," Najenda said.
Izuku gulped as he imagined a crowd of people surrounding him just like All Might endured. He shook his head, "Either way I can't let any Imperial forces see me in public,"
Akame looked at him as she patted him on the back, "Just make sure you keep Eri safe,"
Izuku nodded, "I will, I promise,"
Present
Izuku sat at a table at a cafe as he watched Eri eat her sandwich that he bought for her. Izuku looked around as the cafe was bustling with people. Tables were completely filled as people enjoyed their drinks and meals.
He looked at the necklaces again as he thought about the village he saved. He wanted to make sure if he could get it fixed. But getting a pair of new ones would be much more sufficient, yet Izuku wanted to make sure he got the exact same one.
"Excuse me?"
A voice rang out as he turned his head to see a woman and a child. They both wore a black gown as they stood behind him.
"Would you mind if we sit here with you, it's quite busy today and there is no other space," the woman asked.
"Oh yeah sure!" Izuku without hesitation let the two sit down at the table with them.
The woman bowed as well as the girl did as well. Eri looked at the two as she scooted closer to Izuku since she wasn't familiar with these people.
Izuku didn't mind as he was still trying to figure out how to deal with the necklaces, get a new one or go back to the village and see if they could fix it. The woman noticed the necklaces he was holding as she looked at Izuku; she couldn't see his face since he was wearing a hoodie.
"What happened to those necklaces," she asked.
Izuku looked at her in shock as he wasn't expecting her to start a conversation.
"If you don't mind me asking sir," shesoftly said.
"No it's fine, I accidentally had a fallout with someone but we made up and now I'm here trying to see if I can fix the necklaces," Izuku explained.
"Oh, it's good that you two made up, is she your lover I presume," she asked.
Izuku blushed a bit, "I-Uh…yes…she is,"
The woman giggled a bit at his flustered expression, "You must love if you want to fix a necklace that seems unrepairable,"
Izuku looked away to try and hide his blush. Izuku looked at the woman as he noticed that not just her gown was black but everything she wore was black.
"I'm sorry ma'am but are you mourning a loved one?" Izuku pointed out.
The woman froze a but as she placed her hands on her lap, "Yes, my husband died during a mission assigned by the Empire,"
Izuku solemnly looked at her, "I apologize, that was insensitive of me," he apologized.
She shook her head, "It's quite alright, I asked you about some personal issues, it's only fair you ask as well,"
Izuku frowned, "But still, my issues aren't comparable to losing a loved one,"
While the two were talking, Eri was eating her cake that Izuku bought her as he looked up at the girl who was staring down at her leg. She almost looked like she was on the verge of crying. Eri looked at her cake then at her.
Logue was reminiscing about her father, how loving and caring he was. No matter how scary he looked, he was gentle. She wanted to see him again, she wanted to run to his arms again. But she'll never get the chance again.
She then saw movement in her peripherals. She looked up at the table as she saw a cake in front of her.
She turned to see the girl with white hair and a single horn on her right side of her forehead, slide her the plate. She had a solemn expression on her face.
"Are you okay? You can have my cake if it will make you feel better," Eri said.
Logue waved her hands, "Oh um no thank you, I can't take your food," she tried to reject the offer but Eri wasn't going to take no for an answer.
Eri saw a girl who was crying, just like Izuku did for her. Made her smile, she wanted to do the same for others.
"It's fine, plus it's really good, I love sweets but apples are my favorite," she said.
Logue looked at her as she looked at the cake. She grabbed the spoon as she took a bite. She was reminded of her father once again. Where he baked a cake just for her. She held in her sobs as she looked at Eri with teary eyes.
"Thank you," she had a shaky smile.
Eri smiled at her, as Logue enjoyed the cake. Kije smiled at the interaction as she turned to Izuku who was also watching.
"Is she your sister?" Kije asked.
"Hm? Oh no she's… I'm just her guardian, her parents…were nowhere to be found when I found her," Izuku explained to her.
"Oh that poor child, she's lucky to have you with her,"
Izuku scratched his head, "I couldn't ignore her, I want her to live a bright future where she can smile all the time,"
Kije widened her eyes as she looked at Logue, she smiled.
"I do too, my daughter is the only one I have now, I want her to have a good life where she lives freely," she said.
Izuku nodded, he thought about the current state of the Empire as he clenched his fist. 'In order for that to happen, I have to end this and take her home,'
Then Izuku felt Danger Sense go off as he swiftly turned to see a person getting robbed. People heard the commotion as the rubber started to run off with a bag.
Izuku abruptly got up from his chair, "Ma'am can you please watch over her for sec,"
The woman was shocked at the sudden tone change from his voice as he was gone in a matter of seconds, leaving a green electricity trail.
The robber tried to run away as he looked at his haul. He smirked as he was about to make a right into an alley but Izuku appeared in front of him in an instant and slammed his leg into his face. Making the robber fly back and out cold.
Kije was astonished by that incredible speed but she noticed something as well, right when he kicked the robber his hoodies slightly lifted away from his head revealing his face a bit. She recognized him instantly.
Izuku walked back to the table, "I'm sorry about that, I'll have to take my leave now,"
"Wait a minute," the woman stopped him.
Izuku looked at her in confusion.
"Your Deku, aren't you…" she softly said, not wanting any unwanted attention.
Izuku widened his eyes as he didn't realize he was that recognizable. Was it because of the attack he just did now? He scolded himself about how careless he was.
The woman stared at him, "Deku, my husband name is Bols, apart of the Jaegers,"
Izuku widened his eyes as he looked at her, the man they were mourning was the man that Night Raid had killed.
Izuku didn't know much about Bols, he was unaware of the battle that happened that day until he overheard about it.
Kije was about to say something but then she saw Imperial forces approaching to see what the commotion was about.
"Please come with me," Kije asked.
She turned to Logue as she gestured to her to come with me. Logue was confused as well as Eri as the latter looked at Izuku.
The boy sighed, "Alright,"
He didn't want the Imperial force knowing he was here, that would cause a lot of havoc that he didn't want. He had no choice but to follow her but he could of just grabbed Eri and flew out of there but. He needed to know more about the Jaegers and this was a good opportunity.
With Wave
Wave sat on his bed, it still plagued him. His weakness and the looming failure that hung over his shoulders. He needed some fresh air, the Jaegers were on stand by since they failed their mission at Kyoroch.
He walked out of his room as he turned to see Kurome leaning against the wall as she was a coughing mess.
He widened his eyes, "Kurome!"
He sprinted towards her to make sure she was okay. The girl turned to see Wave approaching her.
She smiled, "Oh Wave, what brings you out of your room," she tried to fight off the pain.
"I should be asking you! You look horrible!" Wave looked at her and he was worried for her.
"I'm fine Wave, I just need to take my medicine," Kurome said.
Wave was doubting her, ever since the attack, her medicines haven't been working and she had been getting much worse over the time. Wave looked at the worse state that Kurome was in.
"I'll be on my way now Wave, don't worry about me just go on about your day Wave," Kurome tried to walk away from him but then she felt her felt get lifted off the ground as Wave was now carrying her like a princess.
She blushed a bit, "Wave?"
"I can't leave my comrade like this, not ever again," he said.
Kurome widened her eyes as she stared at Wave. Wave carried her in the direction of her room.
"Wave…"
"What is it Kurome,"
"Is this your way of making up for your loss," she asked.
Wave didn't say a word but Kurome knew, she saw how it was eating him up.
"Wave it isn't your fault…"
"Even so, I can't ignore it any longer, I'm weak compared to him," Wave said in frustration.
"And because I couldn't win, Esdeath had to take the blame and you and Run got hurt because I couldn't stop-"
He felt a hand on his cheek, "Wave… no one blames you, we all failed but the next time, we'll get them. So please stop blaming yourself,"
Wave's face was filled with guilt and anger, he carried the burden of failure on his shoulders. Failing to stop the enemy from taking his comrades. Even if they don't blame him…
He blames himself for not being strong enough. He will always hold himself accountable, until he's strong enough to protect his comrades, he will never stop blaming himself.
Kurome knew that as well, she saw it in his face. She failed too, she couldn't stop her sister from killing their target. And what makes matters worse is that Deku was able to keep up with Esdeath and even landed a hit on her.
Just like Wave, she blames herself for not being strong enough as well. Whatever it takes, she will make her sister into a puppet. But even so, even if that is the inevitable future. She felt warm right now, being this close to Wave was something she did expect today.
With Izuku
They walked as Izuku was following the woman, preparing if she would do anything like report him. Danger Sense was on standby but he hasn't felt any danger so far and there hasn't been any malicious intent ever since he started to follow her. He kept Eri close just to make sure that he could carry her away just in case danger really did happen.
Logue was occasionally looking back as she looked at her mother in confusion. Kije was debating whether to call the authorities but in her heart, she wanted answers. She needed to know something that had been bugging her ever since her husband's death.
A hero that is aligned with a group of assassins. Deku, who is defending her husband's murderers but yet, she doesn't feel anguish. She was just curious, she wanted to know what made the Hero defend them. Why is he fighting for them? She had so many questions that it constantly plagued her mind.
She wanted to know more about this person, this hero that everyone is praising. Izuku wondered where this woman was taking him. It didn't seem like she wanted to report him to the authorities but staying here with her could be dangerous for Eri.
"My husband…"
Izuku looked at the woman as she kept walking.
"He was a good man, he may have had a past but that didn't stop me from loving him," she said.
Izuku solemnly looked at her, Kije kept walking as they approached a forest. Izuku was getting skeptical of the situation but a part of him told him to keep following her. He wanted to see what she wanted to show him. A lover of an enemy that Night Raid had slain.
They kept walking and walking, until they entered a clearing and Izuku saw a cemetery at the end of the forest. Many gravestones were in plain sight as he looked around. Kije and Logue walked up to a grave and kneeled down and mourned. Izuku approached as he saw the engravings of the stone.
'Here lies a loving father and husband, Bols,'
Izuku didn't say a word, to give the two some space but then.
"Deku, can I ask you something?"
Izuku looked at Kije as she never had resentment towards him but just curiosity.
"Why do you fight for them, why do you fight for people who have killed," she asked.
Izuku stayed silent as he looked at her. She wasn't the first to ask this question, Wave asked this to him as well.
"Because they were wronged by this Empire, but I'm not justifying their actions as well. What they do is wrong and they know that, but the Empire left them no choice but to resort to that…"
Izuku remembered their smiles, their happiness. He knew what he had to do.
He gave Kije a determined look, "Their smiles are worth fighting for, but I can't ignore the people who fight for the Empire as well,"
Kije looked at the boy astonished, "So if you met my husband…would you have tried to save him?
"Yes, even if he has done wrong, I want to at least try to look for the good in others," Izuku stated.
Kije's eyes welled up as she then smiled, "I see, thank you Deku, will you sit with me to honor his death then,"
Izuku nodded as he kneeled down and looked at the grave. He slightly bowed his head as Eri mimicked his actions. They sat there in silence, respecting the deceased Jaeger. Izuku was not only Honoring Bols but Seryu as well. He was close to opening her eyes but he failed her, so in return he wanted to honor her, right next to Bols.
In the City
The streets were empty as no one was out on the streets. That's because they were afraid, the secret police unit was now patrolling the streets. Watching every building, confidently striding through the city.
Syura smirked as he looked at every building, seeing people cowering in fear.
"It seems there's barely anyone here, what should we do?" a man with black hair that extended out on both sides almost like a wing.
"If you're bored Enshin, I can give you all of my attention~" a woman with a pink bob cut flirted with a man named Enshin.
"No thanks," he muttered.
A clown was behind them as he breathed heavily aimlessly looking around, searching for something.
A man walked a few distances from them, he seemed to look like a wandering samurai as a twig was sticking out of his mouth. He held his sword at the ready at all times.
"We need to find something to feed Kousetsu," he said. His eyes remained closed at all times.
A petite blonde girl yawned as she stretched, "Aw man, are people really that scared of us," she whined.
"Ah Patience Dorothea, Izou, you'll get your chance," Syura reassured.
He turned as he saw two Imperial soldiers holding a man in custody as he smirked in curiosity.
As the two soldiers were taking him into custody they looked ahead and saw Syura approach them.
The two instantly recognized him as they stood straight and saluted him.
"Sir Syura, we didn't expect you to be here sir," one of the soldiers responded.
"Nevermind that, what's with this guy anyways," he questioned them.
"He was caught steal a civilians bag but was stopped by someone," he reported.
Syura's smile turned uninterested as his shoulders sourced a bit. "Is that so, alright then that's lame,"
"But he heard some eyewitness say that the person who stopped him was the Vigilante Deku," the other soldier informed him.
Syura widened his eyes as he turned to the soldiers as he smiled.
"Deku huh? Thank you both of you," Syura walked forward as his crew followed behind.
"Wild Hunt, we have our priority target here," their expressions remained the same but they were confident as they were all filled with excitement except for the clown.
'It's time for a our little Reunion, Deku,"
With Prime Minister Honest
The man sat at the table as he ate a piece of steak. He thought about what his son told him.
"Deku, is from another world huh…"
His nose crinkled as his smile was filled with malice, "If Syura captures him then we can see what this world is about and…"
"Conquer not just a country but a world, I'm sure with Esdeath, we can conquer it and claim it as our own!" Honest maniacally giggled as his eyes were crazed.
"Fate seemed to shine upon me,"
In a battle in the West
Ice covered the battlefield as bodies were impaled and dismembered body parts laid waste throughout the battle. Esdeath was filled with joy but she couldn't help but feel empty, the battle with Deku was something she yearned for. Though she wanted to find Tatsumi, her battle with Deku ignited a lust for battle.
"Deku… our battle was splendid, I cannot wait for our rematch!" Esdeath shouted as she rushed into battle.
With Wave
He was out in the city again as he walked down the streets. This time with Run, "I wonder if they're still at the grave again," Wave asked.
"I'm sure they are, they've been going every single day," Run answered.
Wave nodded as he looked around he noticed something, "I wonder where did all the other people go,"
"Last time it was bustling but now it's like a ghost town," Run questioned as they kept heading towards the direction of the cemetery. Then they spotted two soldiers as they kept looking at the direction they were heading.
"I hope there aren't any people at the cemetery, Wild Hunt are a bunch of crazy folks,"
"Let's just head over there to make sure nothing crazy happens," the other soldier looked at him like he was crazy.
"Are you crazy? You got a death wish! Step out of line and you're dead if you cross Sir Syura," the soldier scolded him.
"let's just wait until they come back, yeah?" the soldier suggested.
Wave and Run widened their eyes in horror as they sprinted, rushing to the cemetery. Wave had a look of panic.
"No…No no No! Not this time!"
Cemetery
Izuku had been there for a while, but he didn't leave because Eri was also paying respects to him. Kije and Logue were grateful to the two for paying their respects. Izuku was reminded of Kensei and Mura, he visited their graves every night. He couldn't forget them, not being able to save them hurt him inside.
Their voidless eyes still haunted him to this day but knowing the two, especially Kensei, would've told him to keep fighting the good fight in their name. So he did just that, he kept saving people. Honoring them in return, keeping them in his heart.
Just like Kije and Logue were doing, Honoring their loving father and husband.
As Izuku was about to say something, Danger Sense activated as he quickly activated his gauntlets and formed a green shield as knives deflected off of the energy shield he created.
The three looked at Izuku as they saw six people approaching them. Izuku widened his eyes in shock as he recognized one of them. His eyes then narrowed as there malice was unnoticed.
Syura smiled confidently, "We finally meet again, I never got ya name before."
One of Izou's eyes opened as he felt a powerful aura from Izuku. He grinned, "This man is worthy of Kousetsu, he will fine tonight,"
Dorothea and Cosmina looked at Izuku as they licked their lips, "Oh my, isn't he a charmer, his blood must taste delicious," Dorothea lustfully gazed at Izuku.
Enshin smiled, "This should be fun, right Champ,"
Champ was unfazed by his words as he focused on the two little girls behind Izuku. He started to drool, "Oh my aren't those two precious, I bet their screams would be fantastic!"
Champ then rushed towards them as Logue was startled as she was terrified. Eri appeared in front of her as she put her arms out. This made Champ more excited as he tried to quickly approach them but in a flash, he was sent flying past the rest of the Wild Hunts, slamming into a dozen trees. He laid there unconscious as blood leaked down his forehead.
Syura didn't even see what happened neither did the rest. Izuku landed on the ground as green electricity danced around him violently. Green energy leaked out of his gauntlets as he stared down at Wild Hunt.
Syura smiled but the fear got to him as he didn't expect the boy to become this powerful since the last time he fought him. The boy from before was a different person than before, this boy adapted to his surroundings and has grown from his experience in this world.
"You dare defy the Empire?" He questioned.
"Yeah, ever since you dragged me here, I'm here to end all this suffering," Izuku declared.
Syura laughed maniacally as his eyes were crazed, "Then, WILD HUNTS!"
Dorothea licked her lips in anticipation as Cosmina brought out her Teigu. Enshin got in a low stance as Izou smirked in excitement as he pulled out Kousetsu.
"Let the Hunt begin!"
End
