I shut the door behind me and walked into the apartment, groaning quietly as I walked. My back hurt so bad and nothing I did alleviated it. We were in the home stretch.
"Dimitri?"
"I'm in here," Dimitri said and I followed his voice, stopping when I noticed he wasn't alone.
"Oh, am I interrupting?" I asked.
"No, no. I will never be disappointed to see my favourite girl," Abe said as he stood up, coming towards me and kissing my cheek. I smiled at him and looked at the other person sitting with Dimitri and Tasha.
"I'm your only girl," I mused dryly before stopping, "Wait. I am your only kid, right?"
Abe laughed and nodded his head before turning his attention to everyone at the table.
"Rose, this is Atticus, a new member of the label. He will be doing some shadow work with me for the time being," Abe explained.
"Hello," I said with a wave and sat down in the chair near the table, sighing to myself as I got comfortable. Abe smiled at me fondly before sitting down again. Dimitri sent a wink in my direction and twirled the pen in his hand.
"Shouldn't we wait until this is more private?" Atticus asked.
"No, I have no reason to keep anything from Rose," Dimitri said, "Let's continue."
I lounged in the chair as they went over the details of Dimitri's contract. He had extended it until now because he was still wrapping up the concert in July, but now it needed to be done. So far, everything that he wanted was happening.
"Rose, just so you know, you are allowed to produce music with Dimitri under this new contract. That way you yourself don't need to be signed with a record," Abe added after about twenty minutes. I looked up from my phone and blinked at him before I remembered the conversation he, him, and Dimitri had had a few weeks ago.
"Okay, perfect," I said before looking back at my phone. I was nearing the end of the third pregnancy book I had purchased and I was starting to feel a little less terrified about everything. After a bit I got up and went to Dimitri's room, pulling the identical body pillow he bought me off the bed. I came back out and got settled on the couch. Once I laid down Dimitri frowned at me, his brows pinched.
"Roza? Are you alright?"
I got the pillow tucked between my legs and got situated on my side, giving him a tight smile.
"Just sore and uncomfortable. It's fine," I whispered as I picked up my phone to keep reading. Dimitri nodded and turned his attention back to Abe. Halfway through the chapter, I set me phone down, yawning as I got more comfortable. I wasn't keen on sleeping during the day, but if it was going to happen, I didn't fight it. I pulled the throw off the back of the couch and tucked it around, tucking my hand under my cheek as I closed my eyes.
When I woke up again, I was pleasantly comfortable. There was heat draped over my back and for the first time this week, I wasn't in pain. The heat was wedged between me and the couch, the blanket rolled in a way to cover my front but not my back.
I shifted groggily and sat up, licking my lips. The apartment was quiet and the table where everyone was meeting was empty.
"Hi. I didn't wake you, did it?"
I turned my head and looked at Dimitri with a tired smile.
"No. Did you put the heating pad on me?" I asked as I pulled the pad away from where it slipped behind me.
"Yes, not long ago though. I figured it would help," he said as he came around the couch, pressing a quick kiss to my lips.
"How was the meeting?"
"Good. It just ended about a half hour ago," he said softly and brushed my tangled hair away from my face, "You slept for about an hour and a half."
I shrugged and gingerly got up. "I needed it, apparently," I chuckled as I walked with him towards the kitchen. He had something cooking on the stove, and it smelled heavenly.
"What is that?" I asked, practically salivating as I smelled it.
"Chilli. I made it with beef instead of beans. I know you aren't crazy about the beans," he said as his fingers ran through my hair, carefully untangling my hair and then letting it fall down my back. I had heard that pregnancy could change your hair, but I wasn't expecting it to get thicker. I had to get my hair trimmed a few days ago because it was getting matted, and thankfully the woman cutting my hair understood.
Apparently, I wasn't the only pregnant client she had with curls that wanted to matte together.
"Thanks. Is there sour cream too?"
"And buns. I slipped out while you were sleeping. I got some of that bubble bath you like so much. Andrea said that the bath could help with the pain as long as you aren't in the water too long," he said and I nodded, pulling myself up on the stool.
I rested my elbows on the island and smiled at him almost dreamily. He was so good to me lately. Not that he wasn't always good to me, but he was taking care of me. I liked the feeling of being taken care of. He was attentive and caring, making sure that I was feeling okay and had what I needed. There were even a few times where I'd wake up in the middle of the night with an intense craving and he would get it for me and fill my water bottle so I always had water with me at night.
I could already see that he was going to be an amazing dad to our baby.
Once the chilli was done I got up to get a bowel, dolloping sour cream into my chilli and then finding my place at the island again.
"We really should start setting up a nursery," I mentioned as I stirred the sour cream in, grabbing a few corn chips from the bag across from me.
"We do. But."
"But?" I asked.
"I had an idea?" Dimitri said.
I raised my brows at him. "An idea?"
Dimitri nodded and set his phone down on the table in front of me. It was a house listing in Hidden Hills.
"A house?" I asked, "You want to buy a house?"
"I want to buy a house with you," he said with a tilt of his head, "I mean. I plan on looking at this house regardless, but I'd like it to be our house if you want it to be."
I picked up the phone and swiped through the photos of the house. It wasn't an extravagant house that would make me feel like a guest, but more of a house like the Dragomirs lived in. Yeah, there was a massive pool in the yard and more rooms than we would need, but it was beautiful.
"You want to move in together?" I asked.
"It's been something I've been thinking about," he said as he reached for my hand. "I know that our relationship has had a lot of ups and downs, but I wouldn't want anything else or anyone else. We're starting a family; I want us to be a family."
I laced my fingers with his and squeezed his hand gently
"How many times have you practiced that today?" I asked with a snicker. He was a natural on stage for doing things on the fly, but off the stage, he was a man of few words. And was more of an action versus words kind of guy.
He smirked at me. "I may have made Ivan listen to it a few times," he said making both of us laugh. I scooted to the edge of the chair and pecked his lips.
"Did you schedule a viewing yet?"
He blinked at me before nodding. "Yes."
"Okay," I said with a smile.
"Is that a yes?"
"It's not a no," I retorted but cracked up, "I'd love to move in with you. I've been wanting to voice it, but wasn't sure if we were there yet."
The house felt empty despite all the boxes around me. Our first night in our house and it felt foreign. I put the spoon back in my mouth as I walked through our kitchen, sucking the peanut butter off the spoon as I shuffled. My slippers scuffed against the wood as I went, sighed quietly to myself.
Our living room was nice, with wood floors with royal blue walls, and a fireplace built into the far wall with stonework leading up to the ceiling. The furniture didn't match, being a mixture of mine and Dimitri's, but we'd make it work. We kept his armchair that I had lounged in so many times and my couch, his bookshelves lining the wall on either side of the fireplace with empty shelves.
I had joked to Dimitri that we should put his awards up on the mantel, but he shook his head, saying that he didn't want them in the living room. He wanted that to be 'our space' not a spot to showcase his awards.
The house was a three-level with a basement. The upper level had what was going to become another studio for Dimitri and our bedrooms, while the guest bedroom was on the main level. Our ensuite was everything I had dreamed of; a deep bathtub that you stepped down into and a gorgeous shower. What sold me on the property was the window seats on the main level. I had always been a sucker for them and having so many in the house made me happy.
The baby's room was going to be across from ours, overlooking the backyard. It was the size of my 'master bedroom' in my apartment, so it would be more than big enough for when the baby got older.
I came to a stop in the room near the back door, dipping my spoon into the container again. We had a laundry room. I hadn't seen an actual laundry room since I lived at the Dragomirs, and the domestication of it felt homey.
"Rose?"
"I'm in here," I called out as I swallowed the peanut butter. Dimitri came into the laundry room and ran his hands over my shoulders gently.
"What are you doing in here?" he asked with a small chuckle.
I shrugged. "You know, the only good memories I have of Janine are of doing laundry together?"
"Really?"
I nodded. "I think I was really little then. But I remember her teaching me how to fold towels and that's the only memory I have."
Dimitri tsked quietly as he rubbed his hands over my shoulders again and kissed my head. He didn't say anything and I didn't expect him to. It was such a strange memory that it left me speechless. I turned, slipped out of the laundry room, and returned to the kitchen. I tossed the spoon into the sink and closed the peanut butter container.
"I made the bed," Dimitri whispered, "Do you want me to run you a bath?"
I turned and smiled at him softly.
"Only if you join me," I said.
"Is it because you don't think you'll be able to get out on your own?" he chuckled and I shrugged.
"We can pretend I have a different motive," I laughed as I waddled to the stairs. A part of me wished the stairs were carpeted, but I knew that it would just collect dust. I heard a breathy laugh behind me as I gripped the railing, and jumped when I felt Dimitri's hot against my lower back.
"Take your time," he said as I climbed. I nodded and breathed a sigh when I got to the top. I had gotten used to the elevators in the apartment buildings. Dimitri slipped into the bathroom and turned on the tub.
It seemed like Dimitri had started unpacking our clothes while we were downstairs. There was a pair of pyjamas on the bed for me with clean underwear and socks. I smiled to myself and walked into the closet, pressing my hands against my lower back. Some of our clothes were hung up already, and a few of my sweaters were on the shelf.
"Thanks for starting on the bedroom," I called out to Dimitri as I headed back towards the bathroom.
"It's not a problem. You did a bit more than I would have liked today," he said and stroked my cheek softly, "How are you feeling?"
I shrugged. "I'm okay. My feet hurt a little and my back is sore. But I'm okay," I explained, "I didn't do that much."
Dimitri raised a brow at me. "And what about all the boxes that you brought into the living room that you didn't think I saw?" he questioned and I grinned at him.
"I didn't want to feel useless," I chuckled and ran my hands through my hair, "But I promise I will take it easier."
"Good. I want you and our little one to stay safe," he whispered as he placed his hand on my stomach. I smiled and rested my hand on his, enjoying how warm it felt against me. Dimitri moved away to turn off the water and I started to undress, sighing as I dropped my clothes on the floor. Dimitri offered me his hand as I stepped into the tub. Once I was seated he got undressed too, slipping in behind me with a tired sigh.
I leaned back into him and brushed the water over my chest, smiling to myself. Dimitri's hand moved over my skin gently, caressing my swollen stomach.
"Has the Braxton Hicks eased up?" Dimitri asked quietly.
"Today? Yes," I said tiredly and let my head fall back against his shoulder. Dimitri kissed my shoulder and tucked my hair behind my ears.
"Good, I'm glad to hear that," he said. I nodded and hummed quietly to myself, closing my eyes. After a few minutes, I moved so I could wash my hair, grunting when I reached for the shampoo. Dimitri reached forward and grabbed it off the shelf and handed it to me, and then the conditioner.
Once I was ready to get out, Dimitri braced my hips as I stood up and I got out of the tub. It seemed almost comical that I needed help out of the tub these days, but there had been a few times I got stuck on the toilet.
I climbed into bed after getting dressed and braiding my hair, rearranging the pillows into the right spots. Once I got settled on my side Dimitri came into the bedroom.
"Everything's locked up," he said as he sat at the end of the bed. I smiled and thanked him quietly as he started to massage my feet. I hummed in appreciation and closed my eyes. I started to drift off when Dimitri finished, untucking the duvet from under my legs and draping it over me.
"Good night, my love," Dimitri whispered as he kissed my ear.
"Mmm. Love you," I mumbled tiredly.
Abe had offered to be here with me, but a part of me wanted to do this on my own.
I shifted as I toyed with my mug, glancing down at my watch to check the time. I knew that I was early, but I was still feeling antsy. Even Dimitri offered to be here, but I didn't want to draw too much attention to us while already doing something so far out of my comfort zone.
"Rose?"
I looked up and nodded, starting to stand from my chair.
"I'm Neive, these are my parents, Jamie and Mallory," the woman explained, gesturing to the older couple beside her. I smiled politely at them and jumped a little when Neive hugged me.
"Nice to meet you," I said softly as I returned her hug. Neive stepped back and smiled softly, tsking quietly before stepping aside so her parents could come closer.
"Thank you for reaching out to us. It means a lot," Mallory said as she cupped my hands.
"I'm glad you could make it," I said before sitting down again with a sigh. The three of them sat down as well, looking at me silently with smiles. Janine looked a lot like Jamie, with the same eyes, ears and hair.
"I was a little surprised when you called us," Jamie said after a moment.
"I was too. Finding out about you I mean," I explained and sipped my tea, "I didn't know any of you existed."
Jamie nodded and rested his cheek on his fist. "You look very much like your mother when she was your age," he mused, "That was the last time we saw her. Just shortly after she had you."
"You met me when I was a baby?"
Neive smiled. "Yeah. We were there at the hospital. I tried to convince Janine to tell Abe during her pregnancy, but she was a stubborn woman."
I nodded and toyed with my mug again. "Was she always so cold?"
Mallory and Jamie looked at each other with sad expressions. "No. That didn't happen until after," Mallory explained.
"What happened? Was it me?" I asked quietly.
I jumped when Jamie's hand rested on mine.
"Sweetheart, it wasn't your fault," he whispered, "That happened after. When the drugs started."
I nodded. "What was she like before?"
Neive smiled and shrugged. "Stubborn. Strong-willed and witty. She was a wonderful woman. But after she had you, she struggled. Whether it be post-partum depression or something else, I don't know. But she turned to the drugs around the time you were two,, and everything went downhill from there," she explained.
"And none of you did anything?"
The three looked at each other. "We tried. We told her that she was falling down a rabbit hole and tried to get her help. She packed up and moved the two of you within two days. We never saw either of you again," Jamie explained, "We told her that we would take care of you while she got help, but she bolted."
"And you didn't look for us?"
"We tried," Mallory explained, "But she moved halfway across the country. We hired a private investigator, but he wasn't able to find you. It wasn't until you were in Europe, and we heard from your father that he had any information about you."
I nodded to myself and grimaced when the baby kicked my ribs, rubbing the spot gently. Neive's eyes followed my movements and she smiled softly.
"When are you due?" she asked.
"Middle of December," I said, "Although, I'm really looking forward to not being out of breath all the time."
Mallory smirked. "I remember that feeling. The three of you were horrible for that. I could barely breathe during my pregnancies," she said fondly.
"Three?"
"Yes. Your mom, her twin brother Rupert and then me. Rupert still lives in Scotland," Neive explained, "He was at Dimitri's concert and was very impressed."
I smiled and ran my fingers through my hair. "I remember being completely freaked out the whole time," I chuckled and caught something out of the corner of my eye. I smiled at Andrew and beckoned him to come over. He rocked on his heels and spoke to the woman beside him before coming towards us.
I wasn't sure who she was, but the way the two interacted made me question.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" I asked him.
"Coffee. What about you?" Andrew asked, glancing at the people at the table.
"These are my biological grandparents and aunt," I explained.
Andrew extended his hand to them and greeted them before introducing the woman he was with. Gloria didn't seem all that impressed with me holding Andrew's attention and tried to get Andrew to leave.
"I'll see you at the baby shower this weekend?" I asked Andrew as Gloria tried to drag him away.
"Wouldn't miss it," he said as he was all but dragged away. I scoffed and shook my head, turning to face Mallory.
"That is my adopted brother," I explained.
"He's very sweet. His girlfriend on the other hand," Mallory said with a roll of her eyes, "You get along with your brother?"
I snorted. "Very much. I was in an accident when I was a teenager and was immobile for a while. Andrew would end up helping me in and out of bed and into the bathroom. We got close very quickly, and I am fortunate to have him. He's a good friend."
Mallory smiled and I could see that her eyes were watering a little.
"I'm sorry, did I upset you?"
She shook her head. "No, not at all. I'm happy that you have a brother that loves you. And your adopted parents?"
"Millie is wonderful. Barry was an amazing father too, but sadly he passed away two years ago this Christmas. But either way, they are perfect."
Mallory smiled and sniffed, reaching for my hand and squeezing it firmly.
"Good," she whispered. I gave her a moment to collect herself before I asked more about Janine. Her childhood, what kind of person she was before me. They told me stories about the fights she would get in at school, and how she loved animals.
They asked me about my life and Dimitri. They asked about the baby and how I was getting along in my pregnancy. As the conversation went on, I started to feel more comfortable. The part of me that wanted to know about who I was was starting to feel happy. I was learning about the family I didn't know I had.
Enjoy! Rough edit. I've been having some issues with my eyes the last few days. Sorry if i missed anything major!:)
