Where I'm taking this story with Mike and his health in the hospital may not seem real, and that is fine by me.
I am also sorry for the delay in updating this as well, several things have caused this delay, my father is dying and has been on his deathbed for the last 6months, not covid related at all. Plus also I have not been happy with where the chapter was going. I have rewritten it several times to get it how I want it, and also so it flows on to the next part how I want as well.
Day of Mike's Accident.
"Sir it's Steve Marshall speaking, we have a major problem?" Steve says to the person who has answered the mobile phone, He can hear music in the background, and he is hoping like hell he hasn't interrupted a night out for his boss.
"What is it Steve?" The Chief can tell from Steve's tone of voice that he is worried, and that it can't be good news, more so with the hour that Steve is ringing him, knowing he wont be in the office, and that the call is direct to hsi mobile not via the office.
"I've just had a phone call, Mike Flynn's been hit by a car and is in The Alfred Hospital. I got this information when they rang for his medical records."
"Shit that's no good do you know how bad his injuries are?"
"He's in a serious condition, is all they could tell me they did say they will let me know more later."
"Keep me informed Steve once you know more."
"Will do, I've also emailed you just now my update on Maxine White as well."
"Thank you I will go through it, later if there is anything urgent ring my mobile, I am out for dinner but if it involves Mike and you need me I am available no matter the hour." The chief says to Steve, and Steve understands what he means.
"I understand Sir, I will update you once I know more."
Steve rings the Flynn household and gets ahold of one of the family and talks to them, he finds out that Kate and Mike's parents are already on their way to be with Mike. He leaves a message to let them know he is there for anything they need and to ring anytime day or night.
ALFRED Hospital
Once Kate leaves the hospital, Mike's parents enter his room and talk to him, they notice he doesn't really want to talk, so they leave him be and let him rest. They aren't sure why he doesn't want to talk but they do think it has something to do with Kate, but they also understand he has just come out of a medically induced coma and may also not want to speak as well.
During the night Mike is woken up every few hours, he does inform the nurses of his head hurting him more come the morning. The doctor says let him sleep for a little bit longer before the next check, as the doctor organises more scans for him. They also give him more fluids as well to make sure he is well hydrated as well, plus taking blood to check for other things as well.
Over the next two days Mike hardly talks, he has brief conversations with people, and he keeps complaining of pain and a sore head, even though tests and scans are showing everything is okay in his head, the doctor feels something isn't right. Mike gets more and more pain through his body though on the good side the pain in his head doesn't get worse. He even says some strange and weird things at times. He forgets how he got there, forgets what day it is at times.
Several days later. A week since Kate walked out of the hospital.
There is a knock on Kate's door. She heads and checks and see's Captain Marshall standing on her doorstep.
"Sir what can I do for you?" Kate says to Steve after she opens the door, he enters the home, Kate closing the door behind him.
"I'm here to see how you are doing?"
"I'm doing okay, ready to head back to work though." She replies back to Steve as the two sit down in her lounge.
"Well, you guys are rostered to go back in two weeks' time. Though on another note, I've had the hospital ring they need to talk to you in regards to Mike." Steve says as he looks around Kate's home and notices a few things. Kate also notices Steve has something in his hand.
"Whatever is happening with Mike has nothing to do with me now."
"You may think that but legally you are still in charge."
"Mike is awake, he is able to make these choices on his own now. I also asked him to remove me from being the legal person to do this, he said he would." She replies back as she gets up and walks towards the ranch slider and looks out over the backyard.
"Well he hasn't, and his parents have sent me to come to see you because they have tried and you have ignored them."
"With good reason, Sir." SHe replies as she turns her voice sounding pissed off that they have contacted him to get her to talk to them.
"I understand there is a lot more going on and you properly do not want to talk about it, and some of it has to do with the fax I got from you yesterday, but unfortunately Mike is having some major problems. Due to those problems, they need your approval and signature for the next stage of things."
"His parents can do it, I'll call my lawyer and get him to send something down to them so that they can make those choices," she says as she picks up her mobile and rings her lawyer.
"How soon can they do it?" Steve asks her and she sees the look of worry on Steve's face. She asks and isn't happy with the time delay to get that information to them.
"They said it will be a couple of hours before they can get it done, he is in court and until he is back in the office they can't send anything down, plus I have to go in as well to sign paperwork too." Kate is pissed off right now.
"That is what I thought, read this, and sign it," Steve says as he hands her some information and documents.
ALFRED HOSPITAL
"Mum, is Mike going to be okay?" Millie asks her mum as they watch Mike in the ICU room
"I don't know sweetie, hopefully, Steve can talk Kate around."
"Mum I doubt it, she wants nothing to do with him, or us now."
"That is not true sweetie."
"Yes it is mum, she wouldn't have done what she has if she cared about us at all. She won't even accept my phone call, normally she tells me everything but in the last few months nothing. I had no idea of Jim's proposal, I've somehow not become her best friend anymore." Everyone can hear the hurt in Millie's tone of voice and being shut out by the one person who has been so important to her, they always looked like and acted as twins. And being shut out is hurting her. She goes and leaves the room, Millie is struggling with her brother being in hospital.
As they stand watching their son, a group of nurses rush in and start unhooking Mike. Before they can say anything a doctor walks up to them.
"Doctor, did you get a hold of Kate?"
"No, the Chief of Navy has informed us that he approves of anything and everything we need to do. And ignore any legal powers to be in the matter of him, as well as they are going to fit his medical bills, and do everything we can to save his life, something to do with Navy regulations when they sign their contracts." They send a thank you, up to god right now. They still have no idea if Kate has been informed. But they are pleased the Chief has taken over since they couldn't do anything. They had started legal stuff so they could have medical say but it wasn't approved yet.
KATE'S PLACE.
Steve's mobile rings as Kate is reading the documents that he has given her when he arrived at her place. As he looks at his phone he sees Mike's mother's calling.
"Is he okay?" Is the first thing out of Steve's mouth when he answers the call. Kate hears the worry in Steve's voice, and she presumes he is talking about Mike.
"They took him to surgery, the Chief rang and spoke to them, and informed the hospital that on your guys contracts that you sign he can overrule any power of attorney in place if he feels it is needed."
"Thank god for that, I had told him what was going on and asked him to do that, sorry that we had to put that into place we don't very often do it, but it is in place incase we can't get ahold of those who we need to, to make sure our sailors stay alive."
"It's okay Steve, we are pleased, have you managed to talk to Kate yet?"
"I'm with her now, she is going to see her lawyer later on to get legal documents sent down to take her off being the legal decision-maker."
"That is okay, your Chief has overruled everything anyway, but it will make it easier and quicker for the documents we lodged. Give her our lawyers details so they can work together in sorting this out." Steve gets up and heads away from Kate, his back turned to her. Steve can hear the disappointment in her voice over what is happening regarding Kate right now.
"Are you okay with him taking over like this?"
"We just want our son to live, no matter what. And it seems your Chief wants the same as us. Sad Kate is being as she is over all of this."
"He is one fine Sailor, one of the best we have. Let me know how his surgery goes either way please."
"Will do." The two say a few more words before hanging up.
"So I take it I no longer need to worry about these then," Kate says as she throws the paperwork in her trash can, Steve takes them out of it. This annoys Kate deeply that he would do that.
"These can't be thrown out. You still need to deal with these regardless of what is going on." Steve says to her as he gets the paperwork out of the trash can again. "Mike's parents have also gotten lawyers involved, with your lack of contact when they needed it, and this paperwork is for the Navy in regards to you two."
"Why do you need all this information, it's old news." Kate says as she throws the paperwork onto the table."
"Because we do Kate." He notices how she ignores the information regarding MIke's parents which are her parents as well.
"Look Maxine is causing trouble with the investigation that I am doing on her. I need all that information to help our side with regards to her, that is all the information we have on Mike and you and I need you to go over all of it and not anything we have missed, or is wrong. I can't get Mike to do it because he is not well enough the hospital has said he can't do it..
Kate sits there with the paperwork back in her hands. Trying to process everything.
"Maxine under investigation for what?" Kate says surprised Maxine would be under investigation.
"For a long list of things including the stunt she pulled on Mike and you. I've been going through some stuff and finding small things, things that wouldn't be noticed but because I am going over everything with a fine tooth comb I'm picking them up. You need to deal with that paperwork and also here is Mike's parents lawyers contact details, you need to contact them in regards to Mike and his medical choices. Right now the Chief has taken over." Steve watches as Kate gets up and heads to the kitchen, her back towards him, from her posture he can tell she needs some alone time.
"Ring me if you need me for anything. And by the way we need to talk about your reassignment back to frigates, we need to sit down and talk about it before I even agree to it." Steve says before he gets up and leaves Kate's home. Kate turns and watches as Steve leaves, pissed off that he wants to talk about her reassignment, she just wants to get away from it all. She needs time to clear her head of everything and everyone, and the only place she has ever found that works for clearing her head and getting herself back on track is frigates. It's where she went after her mother passed away and everything crumbled with Mike. And now she has to go over everything in regards to the two of them.
She goes to her laptop and opens it up and as she checks her emails she finds one from Jim, she isn't too sure if she should read it or not, and she decides to have a shower first and then go from there.
ALFRED HOSPITAL
Mike's family sit in the special family room that the hospital has for them. Once Mike woke, he has made just as many gains as he has set backs, and maybe one would think there are more setbacks than gains.
A doctor walks into the room several hours after Mike left for surgery.
"How is he?" is the first thing out of everyone's mouth.
"He's not good to be honest. Like we mentioned to you he had some swelling on his brain, we removed the skull to clean out that area where we noticed he had some blood clots. His ankle we did some more work on, though during surgery we had some other issues and we ended up having to open his stomach up, and I'm pleased that we did as the scans had missed a couple of things that if left untreated for much longer could of caused us some serious issues and if not death for Mike. I know we did open him up when he first arrived to deal with his internal bleeding, but this can happen sometimes, even more so with all the drugs he is getting including blood thinners to prevent blood clots and him moving. We all know that once he woke up he didn't like to stay still as much as we liked, unless we drugged him with more pain relief than what he nor we wanted him to have, cause we were also trying to monitor his head injury. This time we are going to leave him in a drug induced coma for a good week to ten days at this stage to give his brain time to heal,a dn his body more time as well, without him moving nor feeling the pain that he is in. I do recommend though that you get his family here to see him as it is touch and go for him for the next forty eight hours, as you know we were in there for an extra three hours than planned, due to the hiccups we had along the way." The doctor gets up and leaves the room.
"I better ring and inform Kate then." Millie says as she gets her phone out.
"She may not answer hun. She has been ignoring us all week since she left, even when all we have done is left a message to say hi and hope she is doing okay."
"She sort of been talking to me as long as I do not mention Mike, but this time I have no choice." MIllie says as she rings Kate to tell her what is happening.
