Peas and Carrots
Chapter 3
Blue eyes met brown, as Rick and Michonne stood in the aisle staring at each other.
Rick: Michonne…
Michonne stood silent looking at what she thought to be a ghost of her past, then she started walking and Andre stopped her, tugging on her arm.
Andre: Mom, stranger danger, remember?
Michonne nodded her head yes, and started walking slowly towards Rick who practically ran to her picking her up into a hug. The two embraced while Andre stood still watching his mother be effortlessly picked up and twirled around like a princess.
Michonne unwrapped herself from Rick's embrace and went over to Andre.
Michonne: Rick, this is Andre Anthony, my son.
Rick: Anthony…. you're married….
Divorced… Michonne corrected.
Just then rick felt a ping of regret hoping he didn't bring back an negative emotions from Michonne's past.
Rick: Sorry…. Me and Lori, we're also….
Michonne nodded, understanding.
Andre: Well… it was nice meeting you sir, but my mom and I have shopping to do.
Rick and Michonne both looked in Andre's direction and the young boy tugged on his mother's arm. Rick bent down to his level and asked if he could join them, Andre looked to his mom who nodded her head yes.
Andre narrowed his eyes at Rick, checking him out to make sure he's trustworthy. He watched as Rick went to get his cart before looking at his mom.
Andre: Mom, who is that?
An old friend… Michonne answered smiling sweetly
As the trio walked through the aisles, each not saying much to the other, Michonne couldn't help but think Rick and Lori had gotten divorced because of her. She quickly put the thought in the back of her mind.
Andre: Rick? How do you know my mom?
Michonne couldn't believe her son just asked that question, Rick was shocked that her son even talked to him.
Rick looked at Andre and smiled before explaining that he and Michonne grew up together in King County.
Andre: "King County" ...What's that?
Rick: It's a small town about an hour from here.
Andre: Oh, mom, could we go one day?
Michonne: Sure, peanut.
Rick: Peanut?
Andre ran his palm over his face and sighed loudly: Mom, really? In front of Rick?
Michonne giggled, causing Rick to look at her and smile. They locked eyes having a moment, feeling as though it was just the two of them in the aisle, until Andre coughed loudly to knock them out of their gaze.
Andre: Hey Rick, my mom's a lawyer, and one day I'm gonna be a lawyer too. Andre said proudly.
Rick: Oh really, would you ever want to be a cop?
Andre: A cop? Hmm, maybe. Hey mom, didn't you tell me you were a cop once?
Michonne: Yes, I was a police officer, and I was pretty good too. Michonne smiled, looking down at Andre, and giving him a wink.
Rick: She was the best.
Rick smiled and looked at Michonne as she blushed.
Andre: Hmm maybe I will be a cop. Andre said before putting his hand in an L shape and pointed it at Rick.
Andre: FREEZE CRIMINAL!
Rick put his hands up surprised at the sudden turn of events.
Andre: Hands behind your back and kneel!
Rick did as was told, looking to Michonne for help, but she just put her hands up in protest and shrugged. Andre walked behind Rick and started reading him his rights.
Andre: In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups...
Rick listened to Andre repeat the opening monologue to Law and Order and started laughing, looking at Michonne, who just put a hand over her mouth to keep from laughing.
Michonne: Andre, those aren't the Miranda rights!
Andre: But… that's what they say on TV.
Rick: Looks like I'm free to go, Officer Andre.
Andre sighed and reluctantly released his hold on Rick and walked beside Michonne.
Andre: Next time, criminal.
Rick snickered: Next time.
Michonne looked in Rick's cart before looking back eyeing him up and down: Steak? Wine? Candles? You have a date tonight?
Rick: Uh no, I thought I'd treat myself.
Michonne nodded: It was really nice seeing you Rick, but it's getting late….
Rick: Yeah…um, you want to meet up for coffee sometime?
Michonne thought about his offer before nodding: Yeah, I'd like that.
Andre: Get a room!
Rick: Hey Andre, how old are you?
10! Andre answered proudly.
Andre: But I'll be 11 in 2 months! Then I can stay up until 9! Andre said, rubbing his hands together, smiling.
Michonne scoffed and let out a giggle: Alright little man, I think it's past your bedtime. Bye Rick.
Andre sighed loudly pouting: But mom!
Michonne: No buts, you know the routine.
Andre: Ugh ok. Bye Rick.
Rick stood and watched as Michonne and Andre walked away to the front of the store, he walked around some more before remembering he never asked for her number, he quickly ran to check out, leaving his cart in the middle of the aisle. He watched as they made their way out of the store, running after them, his heart pounded as he called her name just as she made it to her car.
She stopped as he caught up to her, putting his hand on her car to catch his breath, Rick stood in front of Michonne, the two looked at each other. Rick eyed Michonne up and down shamelessly with Michonne looking him, up and down just as shameless.
I never got your number… he said flirtatiously.
You never asked, she responded just as flirtatious.
Rick smirked, clenching the inside of his jaw, he licked his lips, squinted his eyes, and in his deepest southern drawl, says: may I have your number?
Michonne felt her knees buckle, and she collected herself, regaining her senses she held her hand out. Rick unlocked his phone and handed it to her, reaching for it their fingers touched, she took his phone and typed her name and number in it. Reaching out his hand, Rick took his phone back, taking the opportunity to touch her hand again, the touch of their hands had caused them to look at each other locking eyes. Rick was shamelessly eyeing Michonne's lips.
Andre: Mom! Mommy!
Michonne looked at Rick with an apologetic look.
Rick: I'll call you.
Michonne nodded her head, their hands lingered together before Michonne broke contact to walk to her car door, but Rick ran over and held the door open for her. Smiling, Michonne giggled getting in the car, and Rick closed the door, careful of her long locs.
Michonne rolled down her window and Rick leaned down still looking at her lips.
Michonne: So, what brought you all the way out here?
Rick stopped looking at her lips and slowly made eye contact, he took a moment to think about his answered.
Rick: I Figured I'd try something different. You?
Michonne shrugged nonchalantly stating: They have good deals.
Rick nodded and chuckled: Will I see you again?
Michonne: Yeah.
Andre: Yeah!
Rick laughed walking to Andre's side of the car and watched as the young boy rolled his window down.
Rick: hey maybe if it's okay with your mom you can ride in the cruiser next time.
Andres eyes lit up in excitement: Mom, can I, please?
Michonne: Only if you're good.
Rick: Alright, see you later, Deputy Andre.
Andre: yeah!
Rick held his hand out and Andre smacked it as hard as he could, causing rick to wince, walking back over to Michonne's side of the car rick took a few steps back.
Michonne sighed looking at rick and they both nod at each other, having an unspoken conversation.
Michonne: see you later, sheriff
Rick: you too, chonne
Michonne pulled out the parking spot driving away, she glanced at Rick in her rear-view mirror sighing and listening as Andre asked her a million questions about Rick being a policeman during the ride home.
Rick made his way back into the store to finish shopping, thinking how lucky he was to have another chance and how the day couldn't get any better.
