The car ride to the airstrip was awkward as an unbearable silence had continued between Felicia and Annika for the last 15 minutes. Felicia was driving while Annika sat in the passenger seat staring blankly at the passing vegetation. Anxiety had kept her in an almost catatonic state as she was still trying to comprehend everything that she was about to do. She was to take Jason back to Paris, where a car would be waiting to pick them up and take them to Garcon's home where they would reside until Felicia returned. They were on their way to an airstrip in Long Island, where Felicia knew individuals who provided clandestine flights, no questions asked. Annika was always open to helping a friend out, but Felicia's request definitely pushed the boundaries of her compassion. Her affection for Jason and wanting to protect his wellbeing was the deciding factor in her decision to do the request. An additional 100k payment from Felicia also helped. The details of the trip were only known between the two as Jason, who was sitting in the back of the car, was ignorant of their impending destination. It would be him to finally break the silence in the car.
"Mommy, where are we going?"
Felicia gave a weak sigh. "Back to France, sweetie. Back to see Garcon for your doctor's appointment."
"Ohhhh" he whimpered in displeasure. "I don't wanna."
"You have to, sweetie. It's important."
He groaned as he crossed his arms in displeasure. The sudden discourse had snapped Annika out of her trance, as she turned her attention to Felicia.
"How much longer is it?" She inquired.
"Not far, we're almost there."
"A-And they're not gonna ask anything?"
"No, I've hired these people for. You pay, they don't ask anything."
Felicia turned at a crossroads and made their way down to the airstrip nearby. It was normally a flight school throughout much of the week, but on certain occasions, would operate as a covert airport. A special jet plane ,that was normally stored away in a hangar that was designated for fuel, had already been taken out in preparation for their furtive trip. As they drew near the airstrip, Felicia turned suddenly onto a dirt path. The main entrance was locked as the school was closed for the day. The path they were taking led them to an alternative entrance where their jet would be waiting. Annika's anxiety spiked as she saw the form of jet plane in the distance. The reality that she was about to embark on a secretive flight with a child that wasn't hers and break a number of laws in the process began to set in. She gave a heavy sigh as she wiped her face with both her hands. As she tried to keep her composure she turned around and looked back at Jason, who at the moment, broke out of ill tempered stance and smiled back at her. The smile assuaged the anxiety that had been previously gripping her. For his sake, she was going to take the risk. Felicia parked just outside the runway, the plane being just a few hundred feet away. She made haste as she exited the vehicle and opened the back door and removed their luggage. She placed the luggage on their wheels and handed them to Annika who grabbed their handles. She then turned her attention to Jason, who was struggling to unbuckle himself from his car seat. Once she removed him from his seat, she glanced over him, combing his hair with her hands, before pulling the ends of his clothes straight.
"Mom…" he groaned as Felicia finished fixing his appearance.
Felicia bit the end of her lip as she struggled to smile. Her eyes quivered as she held back tears, the reality she was about to be separated from her son settling in. She stood up and faced Annika, pulling from her pocket a white envelope that was filled with cash.
"H-here, it's 25 thousand. T-take him out, h-have fun," her voice trembled.
Annika grabbed the envelope, before looking back at Felicia.
"When do you think you'll be back?" She inquired.
"I don't know, a week maybe."
"What if you're not back?"
Felicia's eyes snapped at Annika as she drew her hands to Annika's shoulders.
"I'm coming back," she said sternly.
Jason only looked up in bewilderment as the dialogue between his mother and Annika had left him completely lost. All he could ascertain was that they were about to leave and see Garcon, a man who he didn't share the same fondness that his mother had for him. Felicia looked down at her curious son and frowned, it was time to break the news that she wasn't going to come with him. She gave a heavy sigh before crouching down to him.
"You're going to see uncle Garcon with Annika okay? I'm going to come later, okay?"
"You're not coming?"
"No, I'm gonna come on a different flight."
Jason grimaced as his eyes began to water. Felicia instinctively drew her hands to his face as she attempted to allay her son's despair.
"Hey, hey, hey. I'm gonna be there soon, I promise. Annika is going to be with the whole flight."
"I don't wanna go," he tearfully grumbled as he stared down at the ground. Felicia grabbed his chin and directed his view towards her.
"Hey, I'm not going to leave you. I'm going to be back soon I promise."
He wiped away the tears from his face as his mother's words quelled the sadness in him. She pressed a kiss on his forehead as she drew her arms around him in an affirming hug. She stood, reaching again in her pockets and pulling out a pair of sunglasses and putting them on. She looked at Annika who was waiting patiently on instruction.
"Grab his hand and lets go," Felicia said as she grabbed the handles of the luggage and proceeded towards the plane. Annika and Jason followed suit until Felicia stopped about 100 feet away from the plane. She turned around and faced Annika passing her the handles of the luggage.
"When you get near the plane, someone will come outside and greet you. Don't say anything, just give them the luggage and then carry Jason inside."
"Okay," Annika said as she nodded. Felicia drew forward and embraced Annika in a firm hug.
"Thank you," Felicia whispered.
When she drew back she bent down and embraced her son, holding back a dam of tears as she whispered "I love you," to him. Felicia stood up and then nodded towards Annika, giving the go ahead for their departure. Annika and Jason then walked towards the plane as Felicia stood back and watched. As they neared the airstair that had been set out, a caucasian man in his mid 30s dressed in casual wear appeared from inside the plane. He hurriedly made his way down the stairs to greet the two.
"Is this all you're bringing?" He asked.
"Uhh, yes," Annika answered nervously.
"Okay, " he said as he grabbed the luggage from Annika and hurried towards the back of the plane. He opened a hatch and proceeded to load the luggage into a cargo hold before hurrying back to Annika.
"Alright, we're good. Anyway last goodbyes or whatever nows the time, cuz we're off in five."
He then hurried back up the stairs and made his way into the cockpit. Annika picked up Jason as Felicia instructed and then walked up the stairs. Just before they entered she turned around and looked at Felicia and waved goodbye. Jason followed suit and waved his hand vigorously. Felicia raised her hand in response, but didn't wave with the same enthusiasm as she was locked in emotional strife. Beneath the sunglasses she was wearing, the dam had finally broken, a river of tears flowing out of her eyes hidden from the sight of the two. Annika then turned around and entered the plane and the two were gone from sight. The airstair raised not long after, and within a few minutes the engines came to life and plane began to move. Felicia watched as the plane raced down the runway and then fly up to the clouds and was gone. She then walked back to her car, whereupon entering she drew her sunglasses down and cried profusely. In the proceeding catharsis, she smacked her steering wheel repeatedly, bawling heavily in between before her emotions finally settled and she wiped the tears away from her face. She breathed heavily as she laid back in her seat, her breaths softening little by little, before she gave out one last heavy sigh, her mind finally at ease. She drew her key into the ignition and started the engine, she had much work left to do.
