Sora had found himself just outside of a battle between a Nightmare and three familiar faces. He'd heard so many tales of the king and his friends from Minnie, this was bound to be epic!
Donald and Goofy ran away from the boss the moment they saw it, the duck doing it on purpose.
"We're doomed!" Donald wailed.
"Donald, where are you going?!" Mickey gasped.
"Stand back!" Goofy declared, though he didn't know where to charge given his eyes were closed. "Here goes nothing!"
"Goofy, that's the wrong way!"
Maybe a bit less epic than he thought.
"Alright, I'll show you what a musketeer can do!" Mickey cried, running at the Nightmare. Unfortunately, he was knocked off his feet the moment his sword even grazed it.
"Hold on!" Sora called, summoning his keyblade. He cut through the monster easily before helping the mouse to his feet. "Are you alright, Your Majesty?"
The mouse frowned in confusion. "Huh? Have we met before?"
"Well, we haven't been formal introduced-"
"Oh! You must be a fellow keyblade apprentice!" Mickey gasped, noticing the keyblade. He sheathed his sword before offering his hand to shake. "I'm Mickey, apprentice of Yen Sid!"
This must be the past! Sora realized before shaking. "My name's Sora, I'm the apprentice of…!" He trailed off. He really considered Minnie his master despite Yen Sid being the one giving the exam but what if Mickey knew her already? "…I'm the apprentice of a wonderful queen! She taught me how to use my keyblade."
"A keyblade? You have a keyblade?" A voice that was quite hard to understand cried.
Goofy and Donald had found their way back to their friend and were now looking at Sora in awe.
"Garwash, you're just like Mickey then!" Goofy said.
Sora nodded.
Mickey shushed them suddenly, having them gather close. "Remember, we don't know who else is listening, fellas!"
Goofy covered his mouth quickly.
"Sora, these are my best pals, Goofy and Donald." Mickey explained quickly. "They came with me on a mission from my master. He sensed approaching darkness and so sent us to investigate and protect this world! We figured training to be musketeers would be the best way to do that!"
"Something bad's gonna happen here?" Sora asked in shock as they began training again. "Wait a minute, I wanna help too!"
"But the mission's super dangerous…" Donald trembled. "Even someone as b-brave as me is kinda worried!"
"I'm not afraid. Alone I may be weak, but my friends are my power!" Sora insisted. "Er, if you don't mind us being friends?"
The other two glanced at Mickey who nodded quickly. "Well, that's the right attitude! Ok, you can join the team!"
Mickey's dog, Pluto, gave a bark to his owner before nudging Yakumo. "Of course your new friend can join too, pal!"
The trio pointed their swords to the sky before looking to Sora. He pointed his blade up too. "All for one!"
Sora smiled, recognizing the chant from Kairi and her friends. It seemed he had his own little group of Disney friends too, just waiting to be met. "And one for all!"
The trio was soon called upon by the captain of the musketeers, a cat named Pete. Sora tagged along to see a familiar face waiting alongside the captain.
"It's the princess!" Mickey breathed in shock.
"Princess?" Sora asked in confusion. "Oh yeah, I guess she'd have to be a princess first…"
"Congratulations, boys! In light of your lackluster potential, you are now officially musketeers!"
"So soon?!" Donald gasped while Mickey and Goofy looked excited. "Shouldn't we practice some more!"
"Why? The 2, 3, no 4 of us can do anything together!" Goofy assured him.
"You overcounted there, Goof." Pete chuckled, confident he'd found the most incompetent musketeers he'd ever seen.
"Oh, he didn't overcount, Captain!" Mickey exclaimed.
"Yeah, what about Sora?" Donald added.
"Huh? Who's Sora?"
At hearing his name, Sora awoke and quickly stood to attention. He hadn't meant to fall asleep but Donald's lecture on being a musketeer had been so boring he couldn't help it. "I'm here! What's happening?!"
"Were you just sleeping on the job?" Pete asked in confusion, wondering where this random boy had come from.
"I wouldn't be here otherwise." Sora smiled, thinking it sounded cool since he was in the Realm of Sleep but he'd just mixed up his own mission with the musketeers, making it sound like he was only there to slack off.
Nothing to worry about there, I guess. He fits right in with those three…,Pete thought to himself before clearing his throat. "Well then, welcome aboard, airhead!"
"Alright!" Sora grinned, pumping his fist. "Wait, what-?"
"Now your four's first mission is… protecting Princess Minnie!"
The princess smiled kindly to them but couldn't help but be a bit worried about who had been assigned to protect her. At least she'd have Daisy for support.
"Gee, being a musketeer's pretty fun!" Mickey smiled to Sora and Donald as they rode on the back of the princess' carriage.
"You said it!" Donald grinned.
Just then, the ground began to rumble, causing the carriage to bump and jostle its passengers.
They turned to see a giant, dinosaur-like Dream Eater stomping after them.
"A Dream Eater!" Sora cried, summoning his blade along with Mickey.
"Bad guy!" Donald choked, stumbling back.
Goofy hit the reins, causing the carriage to speed up, looking back to see the beast.
The T-Rex gave a mighty roar before biting down on the carriage, sending the new musketeers flying. Sora was just able to grab onto a rail and looked back to see the trio had fallen off the carriage. "Oh no!"
But there wasn't any time to help them, the Dream Eater was clearly after the princess.
The boy summoned his keyblade before pointing it to the monster. "Hold on, you guys!"
The princess and her lady-in-waiting held onto each other tightly, bouncing along.
The dino gave a loud roar before charging forward, attempting to ram into the carriage again. Thankfully, Sora was there to give it a few quick blasts of darkness to make it back off.
It roared out a blast of fire which Sora was able to shield against before firing a cast of Blizzard back, finally knocking it away.
He turned in order to grab the reins and slow the carriage when he was face to face with a trio of bandits in black.
"We'll be lightening your load by one princess!" One of the Beagle Boys declared. "So make like those musketeers and scram!"
A sword was thrown at him, sending the boy off balance and into the dirt.
He looked up to see Minnie pounding on the window for help. Soon, she and her captors were gone in a cloud of dust. "No!"
"Sora!"
Sora turned to see the musketeers still with some flecks of mud on their uniforms.
"Guys! I'm sorry, I couldn't save the princess."
"Aww, don't worry about it, Sora, we'll get her back!" Goofy said, putting his arm around the boy.
"It's hopeless…" Donald sighed.
Mickey looked a bit discouraged for a moment before looking determined. "Well, I don't think we're hopeless! Yen Sid has faith in us to complete this mission! He sent us together because he knows we're an amazing team!"
"That's right! You guys are unstoppable together!" Sora smiled, thinking of the stories Minnie had told him. "And I know I just joined, but I'll do all that I can to help you guys! It's… you know…" He raised his keyblade.
"All for one," Mickey smiled, placing his sword beside it.
"And one for all!" They finished together, now confident they would save the princess as long as they were together.
They soon found the carriage stuck in the mud in front of a tall tower that looked like it had been abandoned mid-construction.
As the Beagle Boys climbed up the steps, nearing the top, one glanced back worriedly when hearing the door creak open. "What if 'ose musketeers are onto us?"
"We're 87 floors up." The one holding the ladies scoffed. "It'll be hours before 'ey can get to us!"
"Hold it… right there! … You fiends!"
They turned to see the trio of the musketeers panting for air, having run up the stairs with incredible speed thanks to their cartoonish bodies while Sora seemed just fine, having Yakumo's help to quickly bound up the stairs.
They'd reached the top where Daisy and Minnie were slammed into a nearby cage before the Beagle Boys got ready for battle.
"Wait, Sora!" Mickey called, noticing Goofy had a moment of insight. "Got an idea, Goof?"
"I do, and it might actually be a good one!" Goofy grinned.
"Oh, well, take your time-!"
Mickey was suddenly snatched up before Goofy jumped head first out the window.
Sora and the Beagle Boys ran to the window in shock.
"Blimey, what 'e do that for?" The shortest beagle asked Sora.
The boy gave a shrug in response as he watched the two get slung between a tree, a bucking cow, and a windmill that twirled them back around towards the tower. They hurtled back through the window, shoving the bandits out the opposite way and into the icy water below.
"Alright, we did it!" Mickey cheered, bouncing in excitement.
Donald popped his head in, apparently having fled sometime during the battle. "We did it? … We did it!"
The musketeers cheered each other on before they suddenly heard a cough. They turned to see Minnie and Daisy still waiting to be untied.
"And musketeers say it all the time?"
"That's right!"
"But who Engarde?"
"That's what I want to know!"
They trailed off from their ramblings when Goofy suddenly stopped, his ear perking slightly. "Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?" Sora asked in confusion.
Suddenly, Goofy took off into the night, having seen something sneak by the castle gate. "You! Hold it right there!"
"Goofy, wait up!" Sora called.
"Sora! What's the matter?"
He turned to see Mickey looking at him curiously. "Oh, hey, Mickey. Goofy kinda just took off…"
"He's gone?" Mickey asked in surprise. "But why would he leave his post?"
Just then, Donald ran past them, yelling for help.
"Donald! Are you alright?!"
"No!" The duck started before giving a series of sounds that Sora supposed must be words but were too jumbled up thanks to Donald's fear.
"Sorry, I… don't really know what you said." Sora shrugged.
He took a breath. "Captain Pete's a bad guy! He's the one who's been trying to kidnap the princess!"
"Captain Pete? But he's the one who made us musketeers…" Mickey trailed off, realizing the reason why.
"It was all a big lie." Donald sighed.
Mickey's ears fell in disappointment before realizing he couldn't despair, the princess needed them! "Well, lie or no lie, musketeers never run from danger!"
"Then it's time for me to get a new job!" Donald huffed, stomping away. "I just wasn't cut out for this mission!"
"Donald, wait! Together, we can stop Captain Pete!" Mickey called, reaching out to him.
"Yeah, we're unstoppable when we work as a team! We even saved the princess, remember?" Sora grinned.
Donald bowed his head in shame, remembering how he'd fled the moment the odds seemed against them. "I… I was hiding. I'm a coward…"
Sora and Mickey exchanged a glance in surprise. They hadn't realized Donald's absence with everything happening.
"Well, you came here to warn us." Sora reminded him. "I'd say that's pretty brave!"
Donald hesitated slightly.
"Sora, Goofy and I will be right beside you, Donald, because we're friends."
Donald shook his head, his fear overtaking him. "I just can't do it... I'm sorry."
They watched sadly as their friend ran away into the night, leaving the two of them.
Pluto gave a soft whine before nuzzling Mickey's cheek in comfort.
"Don't worry, Mickey. I'm sure he'll be back." Sora assured him.
The mouse nodded but still seemed quite sad.
Then, Yakumo and Pluto suddenly began to growl.
"What's wrong, girl?" Sora asked, looking out into the darkness.
They heard a deep chuckle that then grew into a howl of laughter. Captain Pete emerged from the shadows, grinning down at them from the castle steps. "Well, well, well! Look what we have here, two musketeers missing their friends!"
"Captain Pete!"
The four were suddenly surrounded by Dream Eaters. While Pluto, Yakumo, and Sora fought them off, Mickey leapt up the stairs, landing in front of the captain.
"With the power vested in me by being a musketeer, I hereby arrest you, Captain Pete!" Mickey announced, trying to look as brave as possible.
Pete only laughed, winding up his arm. "Well, by the power vested in me by my fist, I hereby clobber you!"
Mickey tried to pull out his sword to block but it was too late.
"Mickey!" Sora yelled in worry.
The Dream Eaters saw his distraction and used it as a chance to attack from behind, knocking Sora out cold.
"I think he's coming to!"
"Sora? Sora!"
Sora opened his eyes to see Donald and Goofy looking over him worriedly. He was still in the training yard, Mickey and Pete were nowhere to be seen. "Donald… Goofy…?"
Goofy quickly helped him to his feet and Donald dusted him off like a disapproving father. "Come on, Sora! Even my nephews aren't this bad!"
"It's not my fault!" Sora insisted hurriedly before it came back to him. "Captain Pete… Mickey! He has Mickey!"
"We know." Donald moaned. "We heard he took him to Mont Saint-Michael!"
"Oh no, where's that?!" Sora asked worriedly even though he had no idea where they were talking about.
"It's awful. When the tide comes in, the dungeon fills up with water and any prisoner inside drowns!" Goofy explained. "We're going to save him!"
Sora kicked the ground with his shoe a bit. "I know you guys don't know me too well, but can I come along?"
"Gee, with your big mouth making me feel a bit
braver, maybe it would be nice." Donald shrugged.
"Alright!" Sora cheered before his face fell. He put his hands on his hips. "Hey, what do you mean big mouth? You're the one with the bill!"
Goofy gave a chuckle before placing a hand on each of their shoulders'. "I can already tell we're going to be good friends!"
The newly established trio ventured down to the sea before taking a rickety old boat out on the waves. With Donald's expert knowledge thanks to being a sailor in the past, they were able to navigate the rough waters fairly easily.
Unfortunately, Mont Saint-Michael was filled to the brim with Dream Eaters.
"Oh…" Donald shivered, backing away as they approached.
"There's nothing to be afraid of when we're together!" Sora reminded him quickly. "Come on, let's get 'em!"
Donald covered his eyes before charging into the fray while Goofy simply started swinging his sword like crazy. Sora and Yakumo teamed up, bouncing through the enemies like they were playthings.
When the battle was finally over, Goofy's ear suddenly perked up. "Do you hear that?"
Sora strained his ears until he heard it too, running water. "The tide's coming in!"
"Let's go!" Donald yelled.
They ran down, down, down to the deepest depths of the dungeon where they found the room was nearly submerged, their friend's head slipping below the water.
"Mickey!" Sora dived in after him, wrapping his arms around the chain and trying to pull him free. He suddenly felt a pair of arms around his waist and turned to see Donald and Goofy hauling them out of the water.
Mickey coughed up some water before he slowly awoke, shocked to see them. "Sora, Donald, Goofy! You came to save me! Pete told me you were goners!"
He embraced Goofy and Sora in a group hug.
"Well, gee, we're not going anywhere." Goofy reminded him with a chuckle, Sora nodding adamantly.
Donald bowed his head, unsure if Mickey would be able to forgive him.
"Oh, pal, you came back!" Mickey cried, hugging his friend.
"Aw, of course I did." Donald smiled happily.
"We couldn't let you down, Mick." Goofy added. "We're your friends!"
"That's right!" Sora grinned as Donald handed Mickey back his hat. "And now, we've got to save the princess, together! Remember, all for one,"
They waited for Mickey to finish but he just looked sorrowfully at his hat.
"But we're not even real musketeers…" Mickey sighed.
"Not real musketeers? Who says so?" Goofy asked in an unusual bout of anger since his friend was hurt. He placed his hands on his hips. "Listen, Donald may be a big chicken, and Sora's always got his head in the clouds,"
"Hey!" Donald and Sora huffed.
"And you're just a little guy," He ruffled Mickey's fur.
"And I'm no genius but I do know one thing! If the four of us stick together,"
"We can do anything!" Donald cheered.
"We're unstoppable!" Sora called at the same time.
The four placed their hands in the center.
"Alright, musketeers, we have a princess to save!"
"Go on, Pluto, find the princess!" Mickey called after his loyal friend as they ran through the backstage door.
Pluto gave a quick bark before pointing his nose towards a wooden chest being carried away by the Beagle Boys.
"Good boy!" Sora patted him before giving Yakumo one too. "You're both good dogs!"
The four musketeers chased after the trio onto the stage just as the curtain rose.
The crowd gasped in shock at seeing a full-blown fight break out on stage, some wondering if it was part of the show before noticing the poor opera singers were trying to hide, it
Pete who was now king was woken from his nap to see the scene, the chest holding the princess had been dropped center stage. "What?!"
Goofy hoisted up the chest while the others fended off the Beagle Boys as they climbed after them into the catwalk.
Seeing they had nowhere else to go, Goofy threw the chest and his friends onto a prop moon before joining them.
"Whoa!"
They flew down. Sora cast Stop just in time so they wouldn't fall through the stage.
"I think we did it!" Donald cheered before they were suddenly yanked back up.
Pete had thrown himself onto the sun set piece and was now in a tug-a-war against the musketeers.
The chest suddenly slipped through their fingers, making the crowd gasp in horror.
"Princess!" Mickey yelled. He raced down the stairs, the chest landing right in front of him.
Pete jumped off the sun, sending the trio flying down through the stage before Sora even had the chance to stop them.
Mickey looked up wearily as the sword was pointed to his throat.
"It's all over, Mickey… you're all alone." Pete announced.
The pulley holding the ropes suddenly began to squeak, making the mouse smile.
"And with you finally out of the way, getting rid of the princess will be easy as pie!"
"Wanna bet?"
"That's a sucker bet!" Pete laughed.
"Yeah, and you're the sucker!" Sora called as Donald slammed his crown over his face.
"All for one, and one for all!"
By the time he got the crown off, Pete was face to face with Sora, Donald, and Goofy.
"How's this for an airhead?" Sora grinned, hitting him with his keyblade
"And a chicken!" Donald added, poking him in the eyes.
"And a doofus!" Goofy finished, headbutting him.
Finally, it was Mickey's turn. He sat on his friends' shoulders as he smiled down. "I may be small, Pete… but I've got friends that make me ten feet tall!"
He gave a final punch, causing Pete to collapse.
The crowd erupted into cheers as they turned to the chest.
Sora quickly unlocked it, setting the princess and her lady in waiting free.
The princess embraced Mickey lovingly before turning to the rest. "Thank you everyone. Please, kneel."
The four did so before Minnie tapped each of their shoulders with a sword. "I now officially dub thee musketeers!"
The four gave cheers and hollers in delight, hugging each other. They were now true musketeers!
The celebration couldn't last long though. Sora saw the keyhole in the moon before anyone else. After the hugs were over, he pulled away. "Sorry guys, but I've gotta go."
"For your mission?" Goofy asked sadly.
Donald crossed his arms. "That's not fair, we only just became friends!"
"Don't worry, fellas." Mickey smiled up at Sora. "We're connected by our hearts. Even if it takes a while, I know we'll see Sora again!"
Sora nodded quickly. He knew where his first stop was after the exam. "Definitely! Oh, but before I go,"
He raised his sword. "All for one,"
"And one for all!" He could feel Kairi and Riku had done the same.
