Danielle sprang up into her bed. Again. The premonitions were getting more frequent. But less precise. Sometimes, she saw her mother standing over her before she let out a deafening scream. Sometimes she heard a disembodied voice that would end up strangling her. And other times, she saw Bo falling to her death. She had the certainty that all those premonitions were all linked to one another. How? She did not know.
Danielle did not dwell on it too much. She did not know what she could have done to prevent it. Her mother was coming, she knew that already. But who was this other woman? Was she the one who would kill Bo? How would she stop it? And when would all of this occur? This was the problem with premonitions. They weren't precise. They could happen tomorrow as they could happen in ten years from then. They were too frequent these days. Those events would take place sooner than later.
"…on the other side of the ridge, Papa Bear." Dyson was saying as Danielle, Bo and Kenzi walked into the Dal. "So, you don't have to worry about my ass."
"And a really nice one at that." Danielle smiled as she placed her arms behind his neck.
"Banshee." Dyson smiled softly.
"Shapeshifter." Danielle smiled back.
"Are you guys planning a raid on some backwoods moonshiners?" Bo asked them.
"Hell, no." Dyson replied. "Scored myself a long weekend. So, I'm going bear hunting." He said pointing to the map spread on the bar.
"Let me guess, it doesn't involve orange vests, rifles and beer coolers?" Dani said.
"That ain't the way I hunt, babe." Dyson retorted in a husky voice. And Dani snorted.
"Listen, if you, uh, kill Yogi and Boo Boo," Kenzi started. "I am never talking to you again."
"You part of this sunny expedition?" Bo asked Hale.
"Shit, closest I get to a bear is a rug in front of a fireplace." Hale scoffed. "My boy's forest playtime is strictly a solo affair."
"Hang on a minute." Danielle looked at Dyson. "The first thing you do as soon as you get time off is to spend time alone in the woods? I know of the Banshee who would love to go away with you."
"What do you have in mind?"
"I haven't thought that far but we can decide together." Dani retorted. "Just come over tonight and we'll figure something out."
Dyson and Dani were sharing a bath while looking for a place for their romantic retreat.
"The Balamar spa looks nice." Dani said looking at the prospectus.
"Three words—green tea colonics." Dyson retorted. "That sounds so refreshing."
Dani chuckled. "Alright, how about the Wobomack B & B?"
"Yeah. That one's run by a couple of faeries."
"Faeries as in Tinkerbell faeries?" Dani glanced up at him.
"Literally, with wings and everything. Flittin' around, getting' in your business. Not relaxing." Dyson said.
"Alright." Dani sighed. "Let's just pick one."
"Well, then it's gotta be the theme motel." Dyson picked the flyer that looked like a treasure map. "Look, they got a pirate room. Arr!"
"You're such a kid." Dani scoffed.
"Uh, okay, I'm really sorry to interrupt rubber ducky time," Kenzi said as she and Bo stepped into the bathroom. Dani instinctively put her arms over her chest. "But we've got a client consult."
"You don't need me for a client consult." Dani replied.
"You are our business partner now. Full time." Bo said. "So, we need you."
"It's a guy I know from my once less-than-legit exploits, so, I kind of owe him." Kenzi explained as she crouched down next to the tub.
"Do I know him?" Dani asked Kenzi.
"It's Neville."
Dani exhaled. "Alright, I'll be right there."
"Thank you."
"Nice timing, ladies." Dyson called after Bo and Kenzi.
"I won't be long."
Neville had gotten Kenzi out of some troubles back in the day. And Dani and he had grown closer and became good friends ever since. They didn't talk as much as before these days. She hadn't forgotten what he'd done for them in the past. She owed him as much as Kenzi did.
"Hey, Neville." Dani walked into the kitchen.
"Hey, Red." Neville hugged her lightly. "Congratulations on your graduation."
"Thanks." Dani smiled at him. "So, what can we do for you?"
"I heard you're now a P. I or some shit?" Neville said.
"Well, I just joined the business full time but yeah, Bo and I solve problems." Dani nodded.
"Rad, man, 'cause I got a big problem." Neville retorted. "My cousin Thumper—he's gone missing."
"Your cousin's a rabbit?" Bo asked him.
"What? No." Neville sighed glancing at Bo. "It's, like, a street name. You know, this one used to be called 'Meow Meow.'"
"Anybody want a beer?" Kenzi asked quickly as Bo looked at her.
"Meow Meow?"
"Anyway, look, he's only been in the country, like, three months now, and he's an illegal." Neville continued.
"What makes you think he's gone missing?" Dani asked him.
Kenzi handed him a beer. "Cheers." Neville thanked her. "We work together. Monday, just like that, doesn't show up for his ride home."
"Well, where's work?" Bo asked.
"Queensdale Country Club." Neville answered. "I got him a job there. You know, he takes care of the grounds."
"Yeah, Neville works in the kitchen." Kenzi said.
"Well, I'm assuming you already asked around work." Bo said.
"Man, I practically took a 9-iron to his boss's skull looking for answers." Neville retorted. "You know what that son of a bitch says? He says he left midway through his shift. Like, obviously now he's got no work ethic, 'cause he's foreign."
"And you can't go to the cops." Dani shook her head.
"I can't go to the cops unless I want to get him deported." Neville turned away. "Man, that…that club, okay—There's some weird-ass stuff that goes on there."
"We're listening."
"Like, they go out of their way to hire illegals." Neville said. "They were the ones that came to me asking me if I had any friends and relatives that want to work under the table."
"Yeah, 'cause illegals, work for nothing." Kenzi agreed.
"No, because maybe these rich people are selling them into slavery." Neville suggested. "Or maybe they're stealing their organs or some shit. Look, I'm sorry, okay. I know this sounds crazy to you."
"Don't worry. We have heard much weirder. Trust me." Kenzi assured him. "We're gonna find out what happened to him, okay?" She fist-bumped him. "Cross my heart, man. Cross my heart."
"Thanks. That's the old Meow Meow." Neville smiled.
"Are there any more tips that you can give us?" Bo asked him.
"Yeah this gossip queen at the club is this chick name Blake." Neville answered. "If anything, ever goes down, I bet she knows where to start looking…How do you guys plan on getting close, anyway?"
Bo and Kenzi glanced at Dani. Dani exhaled. "He is not going to like that."
"No way." Dyson said to their plan.
"Okay, I would be the one going undercover as Kitchen staff." Kenzi argued. "You get to pretend to be a member and live the good life."
"Well, you guys are gonna have a great time…Alone." Dyson retorted. "I'm on vacation, remember?"
"I told you he wouldn't want to." Dani reminded them.
"Hey, our cover will work so much better if you come in as her husband." Bo continued.
Dyson looked at Dani. "Is that a proposal?"
Dani snorted and shook her head. "Come on. You would be helping us do a solid for a friend." Kenzi insisted.
"He's your pal. He's not mine." Dyson countered and Kenzi punched him. "Ow!"
"Remind me. What was that time where you were wanted for murder," Bo started. "And we totally covered your ass?"
"You totally saved his life, too, right?" Kenzi continued.
"Yeah, we did." Dani agreed. "Like pros. And we didn't ask anything in return." Dani chuckled. "Look, I don't like this any more than you do but I bet you look dashing in a polo shirt and a pair of chinos."
High heels, lavender dress, hair down, wedding band and engagement ring, Danielle was ready to go undercover. With Bo, they were now coworkers at the U.N. while Dyson was her husband, working in a bank. They were regular people with a very good situation. Who just wanted to be part of the country club.
Dani felt uncomfortable. She missed her infamous tweed jacket, her safe blanket. Her arms and legs were exposed. And she hated it. She hated the dress and the shoes. And the speech of the owner.
"I supervise construction on every inch of this Heaven." Mitch, the owner of the Queensdale Country Club was saying, as they looked at the people having a good time in the pool. "Let's come into my office."
They followed him into his office, Dani laced her arm with Dyson's, Bo walking ahead of them.
"Harvard…Oxford…Sailed in the Governor's cup." Mitch read out. "This is great stuff. Now do you ever find you have problems keeping up with your wife's employment?"
"On, no. The bank is generous with transfers when you're top tier." Dyson answered.
"And how long have you been with U.N., Mrs. Thornwood?" Mitch asked Dani.
Dani glanced at Bo. "It's been three years." Bo nodded. "One in Germany and two in Belgium."
"Working in human rights is so rewarding." Bo added.
"Mmm, sure, sure. And I bet you rub shoulders with some heavy hitters." Mitch leaned back in his chair. "Those U.N. parties must be something."
"Well, these two find them quite tedious, so, I'm always looking for a more enthusiastic plus one." Bo replied.
"Well, I don't think we're gonna have any problem green-lighting this application." Mitch assured them. "You should hear from us in about a month."
"Actually, Mitch, we were rather hoping to join the club, uh…" Dyson started.
"As soon as possible." Bo said using her Succubus touch.
"Would today work?" Mitch asked,
"That would make me very happy." Bo assured him.
"One probationary membership coming right up." Mitch said excitedly.
"Uh, three." Dyson corrected.
"Three probationary memberships coming up."
"You are such a peach. "Bo chuckled. "I could just eat you right up."
"If you want, I can give you a personal orientation tour."
"Oh, no. We would hate to take any more of your time." Dani said. "In fact, there is one member we've heard so much about—Blake…? I can't remember her name."
"Blake Jorgenson, yeah." Mitch replied. "She's a bit of a…" He imitated a person drinking. "She's always on the tennis court, if you're looking for her."
"Okay. Great. We'll find her." Bo smiled at Mitch. "And, um, Mitch we will see you later."
"Why are those things so short?" Dani grumbled.
"It looks good on you." Dyson chuckled as they walked up to the tennis court.
"You're only saying that because you get to see legs." Dani countered.
"Nice backhand." Bo complimented Blake.
"Perfected on my ex-husband." Blake answered.
"I'm Bo Dennis and these are my friends, Dyson and Danielle Thornwood." Bo introduced them to the woman.
"Fresh blood?" Blake said.
"Yeah. We, uh, just joined. Been out of the country." Dyson retorted.
"We've been travelling so much, I'm a little rusty." Dani added.
"A good stiff one usually loosens me right up." Blake replied.
"Excuse me?" Dani raised her eyebrows.
"Drink. Stiff drink." She took a swing. "I'm Blake."
"Yeah, we know." Bo said. "I, um, I would love to get the scoop on this place from a real insider. Do you, um, do you have lunch plans?"
"Well, aren't you three adorable?" Blake smiled at them. "Let's go."
Blake wasn't lying when she said that stiff drinks would loosen her up. Every cell of her body was drenched in alcohol and she couldn't shut up about the people in the club. And she had a lot to say.
"This place is just a bunch of ass-kissing wannabees." Blake slurred. "Most of 'em are peasants in Gucci. I'm not sure they even play fair to get what they have."
"You're very good at that, Senora." Dyson said to Kenzi who was serving them.
"Thank you, Senor." Kenzi retorted flipping him the bird.
"Are we talking dodgy accounting or…?" Bo trailed off.
"Mitch and Chloe have this rather exclusive clique."
"And who's Chloe?" Dani asked her.
"His wife. The bitch of the ball." Blake answered. "Look at her—Cheap teeth…cheap tan…cheap tits. It beats me what they get up to behind closed doors, but they've all made each other obscenely rich."
"And which closed doors would those be?" Dyson asked her.
"Every month their little group has an after-hours invite-only scotch tasting." Blake explained. "There's one tonight, in fact. Probably to plot world domination."
"Well, sounds pretty juicy. I'd love a peek." Bo smiled.
"Ay, oh Senora!" They heard Kenzi exclaimed.
"Are you kidding me?!" Chloe's shirt was drenched.
"I am so sorry." Kenzi apologized quickly, trying to fix her mistake.
Blake laughed out loud. "What is your name?" Chloe asked Kenzi.
"Oh, uh, I'm sorry." Kenzi ran away.
"Remind me to tip that one." Blake laughed.
Dani, in the couch next to Dyson, let out a long breath. She was exhausted. How could people do this all the time? Going undercover, pretending to be someone they weren't, making up lives they didn't have. Duplicity was a full-time job it seemed. It wasn't over, though, they had to go back and find out what really happened to Thumper. Nothing in what Blake had told them could really be hold against the owners. They were filthy rich and kept making each other richer. Especially those who went to their secret scotch tasting. Maybe they could find out more there.
"I didn't know you were so good at this undercover thing." Dani said to Dyson.
"You're not too bad yourself." Dyson retorted before kissing her.
"Who knew you could be so duplicitous?" Dani kissed him back.
"I've got my secrets." Dyson replied.
"Do you, now?" Dani smirked.
The door closed and Kenzi walked in, groaning. "Off till my late shift." She sat down next to Dani. "Oh, God, public transit sucks tail."
"Senorita, the servants' entrance is in the rear." Dyson joked as Bo sat on the coffee table across them.
Dani slapped his shoulder. "Yeah, bite my rear, dog breath, okay?" Kenzi glared at him. "I just had to stand on the subway for 45 minutes while a woman clipped her nails in my face. And a guy was poking what I can only hope to be a baguette into my back, okay?" Dani rubbed her back. "And my feet really, really hurt, so somebody please give me a foot massage, stat."
Kenzi placed her legs on Dani's lap and Dyson started to rub her feet. "Well, what did you find out?" Bo asked her.
"Oh. Um, that the club does employ tons of illegals, and a bunch of them had gone missing, and…Oh, my god. That's amazing. Oh, my god. I can almost forget how mad I am at you guys." Kenzi moaned.
"Know any fae that preys on foreign employees?" Bo asked Dyson.
"Nothing points to this being fae" Dyson retorted.
"Oh, come on. Somebody at that place is disappearing immigrant workers." Bo said.
"Oh, and I think you should know, um, our client's cousin was on the manager's wife's hit list." Kenzi told them. "Apparently, he was a real slack-ass, so…"
"Look, that is not a reason to kill someone." Dyson reminded them. "For all we know, those people are just working elsewhere."
"Please, you know faes are involved in this." Dani glanced at him.
"Okay. I'll get Hale to do a background check on the members." Dyson nodded. "Maybe, it'll raise a flag."
"And I say we crash that scotch tasting tonight," Bo suggested. "See, if we can infiltrate their inner circle."
"You think you can get us in?" Dyson asked the Succubus.
"Watch me." Kenzi snored loudly.
Again, Dani had to dress in clothes that she did not find comfortable. A simple but elegant dress of a light pink. She had no desire to go back at this scotch tasting. She'd rather had Bo and Dyson go without her but she had to go too. She promised to help and she would.
The day her mother would come and get her was getting closer. She knew it. Although, she was more interested in finding out who that other woman was. How were her mother and this woman linked to each other?
"Ah, well, looky here." Hale walked in. "Everyone getting all glamorous for a night out."
"Yeah, well, some of us are having less glamorous nights than others," Kenzi complained. "So, thanks guys?"
"What do you find?" Dyson asked as Hale handed him a file.
"Spent all afternoon digging into club members' finances." Hale answered.
"You know, it still creeps me out that the Fae can access everyone's bank accounts." Bo commented.
"Really? 'cause it kinda creeps me out that they consider humans to be one of the four basic food groups." Kenzi said. "Oh, yeah, and in case anybody's wondering, I'm pretty sure the creepy groundskeeper is sizing me up to fit in a bun."
Hale snorted. "He must've just been looking for a snack." Kenzi slapped his shoulder. "Anyway, only, uh, strange thing I turned up is plenty of the country club members had significant bumps in their bank accounts. Shortly after joining the club."
"Maybe, it's a kickback scheme." Dyson suggested. "Or payoffs or bribes. Who knows?"
"Maybe Thumper got iced out 'cause he found something out." Kenzi said.
"I suppose we'll find that out tonight." Dani sighed. "Hit these people up for information."
"And figure out exactly how they got their sudden wealth." Bo added. "While we do that…"
"I will let myself into Herr Direktor's office and see if I can find anything incriminating." Kenzi continued.
"And I'll have your back." Hale said.
"Can I have a gun?" Kenzi asked Hale as someone knocked on the door.
"Nope."
"Grenades."
"Nope."
"A magic sword? Come on."
Dani did not see who was behind the door. But whoever it was, she had recognized the voice. She didn't hear what was being said, it was faint but it was enough for her to have recognized the voice. Maybe another one of her powers, she did not know. All she knew was that Bo kept the identity of their visitor a secret. And whoever it was, had upset her.
"We don't usually let newcomers join our little soiree." Mitch said as the three Faes followed him.
"And we're so grateful, aren't we guys?" Bo chuckled.
"Oh, we are so grateful." Dyson agreed.
"See, we really believe in community, Mitch," Bo started. "And we can tell that you and your gang are exactly our kind of people."
"Oh, everyone will find you quite simpatico." Mitch replied. "Now there is one thing."
"And what is that?" Dani asked.
"This isn't your standard scotch tasting." Mitch said opening the doors. Loud music welcomed them, people in bathing suit were sharing drinks, laughing. Others were in the swimming pool enjoying themselves. "Welcome to scotch night." Two naked people ran in front of them.
"Hey, newbies! Come on in." Chloe called to them. "Water's perfect."
"I did not sign up for this." Dani hissed. "I came for a scotch tasting, not for a pool party."
"Come on, Dan, this could be fun. Plus, it's the only way for us to find out what is up in this country club."
"Do you even know me?" Dani glared at her.
"We stay long enough to ask questions. And as soon as we know what we need, we'll leave." Bo grabbed her shoulders. "Nothing weird will happen."
"That's what you say now." Dani retorted. "But something is going to happen."
"So, this is nice." Bo said.
"Yes, it's delightful." Dyson said. "So much better than hunting."
"You hunt? That's so primal." Chloe commented.
"Oh, you have no idea." Dani said fidgeting. Dyson pulled her closer to him, and kissed her knuckles.
"So, uh, Blake—she's not part of these little soirees of yours?" Bo asked. "She seems pretty a-list to me."
"Ah, Blake is a valued member." Mitch retorted. "But she's not really a team player." The Chef arrived. "Oh, midnight snack! What's on the menu?"
"Grilled flatbread with tomato and chives." The Chef answered. "And mixed vegetables with a squash tapenade."
"Oh, Amy's food is to die for, "Chloe said. "And it's all fresh from our own garden."
"My darling," Dyson leaned over her, Bo imitating him. Dani, in between. "I would say that Mitch is hiding something."
Mitch took off his robe. "I would say he's not hiding enough." Dani commented. Mitch jumped in the hot tub, splashing water onto both Bo and Dani.
After several painful minutes, during which Mitch and Chloe kept looking at them suggestively, they put their robe back on. They walked around the pool, among the guests while Mitch and Chloe accompanied them.
"Positive energy, you put into the world," Chloe said. "And it comes back to you tenfold. That's why I love this place. You can taste the energy flowing between all of us. Isn't that right, dear?" And they kissed.
Dani looked away, hoping that when she and Dyson were kissing, they didn't look that sickening.
"Tastes like success." Mitch said pulling away. "Don't worry. Don't worry. We are very, very discreet."
"We, um, we didn't realize." Bo replied.
"I did." He retorted. "That interview—coming on to me with your friends watching. Fantastic."
"Showing up here without an invitation…" Chloe continued. "Or a bathing suit." Chloe was starting to open Dani's robe.
"You, three, seem more than just friends." Mitch said. "We knew right away; you were our kind of people."
"Don't be shy. We're not." Chloe encouraged Dani while Mitch took off his robe.
"Unfortunately, I have a, uh, an early morning." Dyson apologized. And Dani had never felt so relieved. "Maybe another time."
"Right." Dani nodded.
"Another time." And they left the party.
"I would never thank you enough for this." Dani said as they made their way into her bedroom. "Bo isn't very happy. Although, she may be right; we might have blown our chances to get more info on the case."
"Well, I guess we're just gonna have to find a less sleazy way of getting our information." Dyson snapped.
Dani frowned at him. "What's really bothering you?"
"I don't want to share you, Danielle." Dyson said walking up to her. "I don't want anyone else's hands on your body. I don't want anyone's mouth on yours."
"And here I thought, you were being protective." Dany smirked. "When really you were being jealous."
Dyson knelt down. "Yes, I was being jealous."
"You have nothing to worry about." Dani put her arms around his shoulders. "I am the woman of only one man. And that man, right now, it's you, Shapeshifter."
"I can be intense; I can be territorial." Dyson said. "And god knows, I can be muleheaded. But I'm also yours…if you'll have me."
"And I am yours." Dani touched his forehead with hers. "As long as you'll have me."
"Well, you better be careful, 'cause wolves mate for life." Dyson warned her.
"I know." Dani nodded. "I've made my research and it doesn't scare me. Just promise me one thing."
"What's that?"
"We'll be honest to each other." Dani said. "As much as possible. This is the only way to make this work."
"I promise."
Dani smiled. "And was this your declaration of love? Because it was quite impressive."
Dyson kissed her. "No more words."
"Agreed." Dani chuckled as Dyson pushed her down on the bed.
She hadn't expected Dyson's declaration. She hadn't expected him to choose her as his mate. Because this was what he just did. He had chosen her. And she had chosen him. Was she ready to say the words? Maybe not. Did she truly love him? Yes, she did. Would it last? She never really was that lucky but she hoped so.
Anyway, she had dived into her books to find something about the fae they were hunting. Mitch and Chloe were definitely humans. They were probably working with a fae. But which one? And why? Nothing came to her. Not even the beginning of an idea. She didn't have enough info to find anything useful.
"I really wish you hadn't told me they were swingers." Kenzi put their plates in front of them. "I can feel everybody checking me out on the boinkability index."
"Oh, relax. They only boink other members." Bo assured her.
"Oh, that's great." Kenzi retorted. "Well, then they'll kill me then. Yeah, because the file says that the workers had three strikes against them. I have two and I already raked up another one this morning because I was late."
"Kenz, it's going to be alright. No one's gonna kill you." Dani promised.
"Well, tell that to Neville's cousin."
"Well, that is something." Dyson said to Hale on the phone. "Thanks mate."
"What's up?" Dani asked him as he hung up.
"The, uh, next year's budget came down for our department."
"Is it bad?"
"We got a ten per cent bump." Dyson explained.
"It's good, right?" Bo asked him.
"It's weird. Apparently, they used me as a poster boy for the increase."
"It is weird." Dani agreed. "But you love it, Mr. Thornwood, don't you?"
"Maybe the prosperity in this place is contagious." Bo suggested.
"Coffee? More coffee?" Kenzi came back to them. "So, I asked around and uh, that woman named Blake, she never checked out yesterday."
"Maybe she forgot."
"Well, Rita in housekeeping claims that she saw Mitch driving Blake's car." Kenzi whispered.
"Hale said something else." Dyson told her. "You know that file you gave him?"
"Yeah."
"He checked the names. And apparently, the ones with three strikes are the ones that had disappeared."
"Oh, that's fantastic. That proves my point. I am murder fae bait." Kenzi said. "And when they kill me, I'm never talking to you ever again."
"Fancy taking a walk with your beautiful wife?" Dani asked Dyson.
"I like the sound of that." Dyson answered.
"Bo?"
"No, you two lovebirds go. I'll stay and take a look around." Bo retorted.
Dyson and Dani, hands in hands, walked in the small clearing around the club. It was pleasant, normal, natural. She had had relationships before, all of them humans. They had been pleasant and normal. Nothing complicated. But Dyson was fae. And she never thought, it would be that simple. Or at least, it was for now.
"You are my first." Dani said.
"First what?" Dyson asked her.
"The first Fae I've ever been with." Dani confessed.
"Is that so?" Dyson twirled her around before pulling her to him. He kissed her.
She chuckled as he pulled away. "And the only one for a very long time."
"What's that?" Dyson asked as she picked up something from the ground.
"It's a lottery ticket. It must have dropped from somebody's pocket." Dani answered as she scratched the ticket. "Oh, boy!" As the ticket revealed to be a winning one. "I think I just won twenty-five thousand dollars."
"What's that thing about the member becoming successful?" Dyson retorted.
"Yeah, this is getting weirder and weirder." Dani agreed.
She caught sight of movement behind one of the bushes. Someone was there and was now running away from them. Dyson noticed him too. They went different ways. Dani chasing the man as best as she could. She had lost the suspicious stalker. Someone touched her shoulder lightly. She fought back only for to be blocked by Dyson. He kissed her knuckle.
"Don't do that." Dani slapped him.
"I'm sorry." Dyson laughed.
"Found something?" Dani asked him.
"No. Not even a scent." Dyson retorted. He then pointed to a wooden shed.
"Maybe Blake came out this way and never came back." Dani suggested as they took a look around. "Look at this." She pointed at a metal container.
Her steps faltered as she came closer. He felt like death, the closer she got there. Dyson opened it. "Oh, my God!" Dyson exclaimed. "What do you want to make this is Blake?" Dyson asked showing her a pink visor.
Danielle was surprised that she hadn't felt that death had occurred in this Country Club. Something was definitely up in this place. Dyson couldn't pick up a scent and she couldn't feel death. This was definitely the works of a Fae. But which one? This had yet to be determined.
"It's human remains, all right." Hale said. "The D.N.A. in your sample matches the hair strands Kenzi got from Blake's locker. And also, the sample you got from the gardener's cousin."
"Charming." Dani commented.
"I got more." Hale continued. "All sorts of D.N.A. in that stew. Including trace amounts of fae."
"As in, a fae left some behind while killing a bunch of humans?" Bo asked.
"That'd be my guess." Hale replied.
"Any I.D. on the fae?" Dyson asked him.
"Not in our database, but I mean, come on," Hale answered. "How many fae volunteer to donate D.N.A., right?"
"You know, this is getting way too gross to play it coy anymore." Bo said.
"What do you have in mind?" Dani asked her.
"Well, I've always preferred the direct approach." Bo smirked.
"Hi, Mitch!" Bo greeted him as the three walked into his office.
"Yeah, excuse me, I'm in the middle of something." Mitch replied. "I'm gonna call you back."
"You see? I told you he'd be mad." Bo turned to her friends. "I am so sorry we ran out on you last night."
"Yeah, well, just when the fun was starting." Mitch retorted.
"Well, she'd like to make it up to you, Mitch." Dyson said.
"Oh?" Mitch glanced down at Bo.
Bo grabbed his face and used her Succubus charm. "We know that Blake is dead, and we know that you and your hot tub buddies like to get rich for murder." Bo said. "We just want to know how it all works."
"We're not the only ones who reap the benefits." Mitch retorted with a stupid smile on his face. "Every member gets something out of it."
"All of them? How?" Dani frowned.
"I swear I don't even know" Mitch retorted.
Bo fed on him, again. "Tell us."
"I don't know how it works, but I was handpicked by the previous director to take charge." Mitch explained. "He entrusted with the secret."
Bo slapped him upside the head. "What secret?"
"Oh, every member of the club gets ahead in life, in exchange for some of us performing sacrifices on their behalf."
"Human sacrifices?"
"Yes, human sacrifices." Mitch nodded. "Now, come on. Don't stop."
"Okay, just—how does it all work?" Bo pushed him away.
"You know, we pick a sacrifice, like a member of the staff, and we go out into the woods. And—and…something feeds on them."
"What kind of something?" Dyson asked him.
"I don't know. Maybe plants."
"All so, you can have success?"
"And I don't know how it works but every member reaps the rewards." Mitch said. "And our victims, their deaths, they benefit the society. I mean, these are illegal immigrants. They're not even supposed to be here."
"Oh, that sounds reasonable."
"Look, we only pick the ones that are incompetent." Mitch defended his actions.
"Nice management style." Bo commented. "Sounds like Dark Fae to me."
"Well, if that's the case, by fae laws, the only rule that's broken is exposing itself to humans."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning, it's out of our hands. It's up to the Dark." Danielle explained.
"I can't intervene, but I can make sure this piece of garbage doesn't remember the last five years of his life." Dyson grabbed Mitch by the throat. "Good times are over, Mitch, and you won't even remember them."
"Dyson!" Dani grabbed his arm gently. "Let go."
Dyson released Mitch. "So, all we have to do is to find and defeat a mysterious Fae." Bo said. "Great."
"Good luck." Dyson said as both Bo and Dani left.
"So, there's this Fae and it's gonna eat me. Eat me!" Kenzi held her head.
"Not if we can find it first." Bo assured her as Dani rubbed her back "Any help here, Trick?"
"Well, if you're dealing with a forest-dwelling fae," Trick said. "It could be any number of species.
Hale walked up behind them. "Huh. Well, we've got something that might help with that." Bo said turning around and taking the small bottles from his hands. "Leftovers."
"Feeding-by product." Hale said. "Hoping you might have an opinion or two about it."
Trick opened the bottle and took a sniff. "Have the club members been on the receiving end of good fortune?"
"And I suppose it's not a good thing?" Dani sighed.
He brought out a dead plant, placed it on the bar and poured some of the leftovers over it. The tree flourished rapidly, good as new.
"Oh, that's not good at all." Trick shook his head.
"Because we're dealing with an evil florist?" Bo said.
"It's a Land Wight. It's a nature Fae." Trick explained. "That lives in harmony with a piece of land."
"A Fae hippie?" That was Kenzie.
"No, a shifter." Dani said crouching down in front of the plant. "It usually becomes one with the plants that it takes care of."
"Explains why Dyson couldn't pick up a scent." Hale said.
"It flourishes in an organic environment. Which is its strength but could also be its weakness." Trick continued.
"Well, what does it have to do with everybody success?" Bo asked.
"Well, anything that grows in this becomes incredibly tasty. And brings prosperity to anyone who eats it." Trick answered.
"So, this Wight likes to eat people?"
"It secretes a digestive juice onto its victim to soften it up and then swallows the resulting mass," Trick explained. "And then the product waste becomes fertilizer for the plants that live on the Wight's territory."
"Wait a minute." Kenzi glanced up at them. "This fertilizer is Fae poop?"
"Circle of life."
"Yes! This time it wasn't me who had to eat the gross thing." Kenzi cheered. They were back at the Country Club, checking out the garden.
"Why did I have t o eat that salad?" Bo moaned in disgust.
"I think I'm going to barf." Dani winced.
"Hey." Kenzi clapped her hands. "You look sharp, okay? I am still in danger. You gotta kill this Land Wight before I am the one pushing up the damn rutabagas."
"Okay. So, right, who is most likely to be a Land Wight around here?" Bo asked.
"Somebody connected to nature, obviously." Dani shrugged.
"Using fertilizer."
"Creepy Groundskeeper." The three of them said at the same time as they caught sight of him.
"Ohh. Okay. So, um…you two get to the kitchen." Bo said to Kenzi. "And do whatever you can to stop them from serving any more food. I'll—I'll deal with him."
"You're sure?" Kenzi asked with a smile.
"Yeah."
"Okay."
"Okay. Be careful."
Kenzi and Dani ran as fast as they could to the kitchen. Neville and Alice were the only one in the kitchen.
"Stop! Stop, stop, stop." Kenzi yelled as she and Dani started to throw away the food. "It's the garden, okay?"
"Kenzi!"
"It's, like, an attack of the mutant tomatoes or something." Kenzi continued.
"Neville, give us a moment." Alice said. "What are you doing?"
"You have to trust us, Alice." Dani said. "These are dangerous to the staff…"
"And do you know what the hell these grew out of?" Kenzi asked her.
"I most certainly do." Alice smirked.
She suddenly grabbed Kenzi's arm, vines coming out of her sleeves. Dani gasped and came forward to Kenzi's help. Vines sprang to her throat and held her in a death grip.
"You get your slimy vines off of them, or I will chop them off." Bo threatened Alice with shears.
"No human talks to me like that and lives." Alice countered.
"Who's human?"
"Huh? So, what's your problem, sister?"
"Uh, you're drooling all over my friends here," Bo retorted. "And frankly, eating people is so low-rent."
"This is my land. I cultivate it." Alice said. "The creatures I allow to live on my plants have great lives. But I gotta eat, too."
"Why people?" Kenzi croaked out.
"Because you taste so damn good." Alice replied. "If the humans didn't like the deal, they never should've developed on my territory. Their choice."
"Except the ones that you ate never got to choose, so this ends as of now."
"Wait? You think you can take me?" Alice laughed releasing Kenzi and Danielle. "Try it. Any bruise, any nick, any cut…It'll grow back like it never happened."
"Really?" Bo replied. "Well, let's see how you like the taste of herbicide."
Kitchen staffs and gardeners walked into the kitchen. "Villagers and pitchfork, never made a good combo, did they?" Kenzi said.
"You're—you're gonna be a party to murder?" Alice stammered.
"Oh, no, that's ain't the way we roll." Dani shook her head.
"This is between you and your prey." Bo finished for her. "Kitchen's all yours."
Bo, Kenzi and Dani walked out and away from the Country Club, Alice screaming behind them.
This was one hell of a long day. They had taken care of the Land Wight, made her disappeared, probably caused the misfortune of the Country Club's members. And they had offered up their winning ticket to Neville, so he could help his cousin's family. It had been a long day. It had been a good day. But the day wasn't over.
Danielle picked up her phone as they were saying goodbye to Neville. "Are you coming over? 'Cause I would love a foot massage."
"We're gotta talk." Dyson said seriously.
"What's going on?"
"Not over the phone." Dyson retorted. "It's important."
"You're not mad about the polo shirt, are you?" Dani frowned.
"No." Dyson answered. "Look, I gotta go to cop shop to put this thing to bed. Can I come over after?"
"You know you're always welcome." Dani said. "Or I can come and meet you at your office. I'll bring you dinner."
"Do you know how to let yourself in?"
"I have my ways." Dani smiled. "I'll see you in a bit."
Danielle arrived at the precinct expecting to have an agreeable picnic with Dyson at the station. She hadn't expected to find Saskia and Dyson in a very awkward position. Saskia feigned to be surprised to see Dani before she pushed Dyson down. She had fed on him.
"This is embarrassing. You weren't supposed to see this." Saskia apologized. "In fact, I wasn't expecting you."
"Dyson!" Dani fell on her knees next to Dyson. "Come on, wake up." She slapped him on the face. "What the hell is wrong with you, Saskia?"
"I'm a Succubus, what did you expect?" Saskia answered. "It's not like he put up much of a fight."
"Try me." Dani almost growled, attacking Saskia.
Saskia broke a chair on her back. "Come on, Sweetie, you don't really think you can take me." She chuckled. "I promised your mother that I would leave you to her, so, don't tempt me."
Dani got back on your feet and stabbed her with a piece of the broken chair. "We'll meet again, sweetheart."
Dani went back to Dyson as Saskia left. "Stay with me, please. Dyson, come on." The Shapeshifter was gasping for breath. "Stay with me, okay? Stay with me." Danielle grabbed her phone and called for help. "Bo, I need your help. Please, come quickly."
