Sandstorm over Remnant

The finger of God

"Clean energy for New Beacon, thanks to RobCo's construction of the solar power plant that has yet to be named it seems like in the future we might only need the sun to light our houses!" radio reports echoed as one of the guards shook his head and changed the station.

His buddy gave him an annoyed look "What the hell man I was listening to that!"

"Is not like it matters for us here in the frontier, the council isn't doing shit for us out here man. All this talk about progress pisses me off cause we never see it out here… only Grimm and death"-"All right what the hell is up with you today? Is this because of"-"YES DAMMIT, she was just a kid and she got split in half by that massive Death Stalker, and all because they couldn't spare the reinforcements"

The other guard clicked his tongue and nodded "I feel you but Vale is barely standing as it is, truth to be told it's a miracle that the entire continent has not fallen to chaos. The attack on the capital could have lead to the fall of an entire continent… is scary how close we where to loosing it all" he nodded as he returned to looking out of his scope "Yeah but still is not like… GRIMM!"

A large hoard of Beowolf and Sabyr advanced with great speed towards the outpost, ignoring the counter offense by the soldiers who could only watch in horror as more and more of the beasts ran out from the forest "I… I'm sorry" they had failed Vale, the only thing they could do was hope that the remains of their destroyed outpost let the city know of the coming horde.

"Heads up!" rose petals almost blinded him as a red blur passed them by and fired at the Grimm, Ruby Rose reloaded as she shook her head at the amount of creatures heading their way "That's a lot of them, Weiss can you…?"-"On it"

A cold breeze made her shiver as Weiss unleashed strike after strike of ice dust freezing the floor along with some of the Grimm. "That wont stop them for long Ruby, get those men out of there" Weiss said as she spoke into her scroll. A red blur passed her by along with the screams of the ones with being rescued taking some steps back she looked at the giant horde of monster and frowned "There are more than what we expected"

"Then good thing we are here huh?" Weiss almost jumped in fright as the headmistress ripped the very ground around them and used it as a weapon, rocks and rotten pieces of trees where launched at the Grimm as Glynda unleashed her full might against them. Looking at the forest around them the feeling that someone was watching, this was to be a simple recognizance mission she would not let her students die here. Reaching for her scroll she pressed a small button on the side, nothing happened at first but then the forest was illuminated with red light as the mighty securitron army rolled out of their hiding spot, their laser melting trough bone and fur like paper "Engaging target" The horde was reduced to cinders in mere seconds as the machines scanned for more target "Area secured"

The machines all returned to their post as their primary objective became priority once more, Glynda frowned as she watched the machines wheel themselves around the dark forest searching for something. Minerals? Caves? She did not know, the man that was leading the machine army had disappeared from the face of the earth after his speech at new beacon, the only one that seemed to have contact with him was the specialist from Atlas Winter Schnee something that could be understood, from what she understood the two where in a romantic relationship. "We can't thank you enough mam, you and your students have saved the lives of my group"

Glynda nodded at them "Don't worry, you should accompany us back to the nearest settlement. You can inform your superiors that this outpost has fallen and needs to be reinforced."

"Like that is going to happen" the guard said sadly as he shook his head, Weiss walked towards them as she sheeted her weapon. Raising an eyebrow at the comment she gave the guard a look "What do you mean?" the guard seemed to hesitate but then shrugged as he decided that he did not get paid enough to hide secrets from the people that had just saved them from the grip of the Grimm.

Looking at the forest ahead of him the guard frowned "It is getting worse… every single day we loose another outpost. I don't know how long the frontier can hold, they seem dead set in reaching the city of Vale… Headmistress I know you don't need me to tell you this but I think this past weeks the Grimm have been licking their wounds and they are coming back. Vale can't defend itself we need reinforcements" Glynda nodded as she began to walk away.

"Vale wont fall" was all that the guard heard as the witch disappeared into the mist, turning to the young student he blinked at the dark forest "Your teacher is kinda creepy" Weiss simply shook her head "You have no idea" reaching for her scroll she signaled Ruby and the others that they needed to head back to the bullhead. Looking at her other messages she spotted one that her sister had sent. Things had gone back to normal now, Winter while a far would check on her via letters or messages to her scroll it was nice to know that she cared, this one was brief but in her humble opinion sweet. Especially for someone as serious as her sister "Good luck on your mission"

There was a blur of red next to her as she pocketed her device, Ruby dusted herself off as she let out a sigh "What a mess" Weiss raised an eyebrow at the tone of voice her team leader was using. The small girl seemed to be frowning as she placed Crecent Rose on her back.

Weiss coughed into her fist snapping the young leader out of whatever was going on with her "Cap for your thoughts?"

"Hah! That's Six's catchphrase I will tell him you stole it!" Ruby said with a small giggle as Weiss simply snorted as they began their walk towards the Bullhead "He should feel honored that I borrowed something out of his foul mouthed dictionary… but seriously is something wrong. You should feel exited, we just conducted another successful mission"

Ruby let out a sigh as she looked ahead.

The forests dark grays and greens dancing on her silver eyes as she struggled to find the words to describe what she was feeling "It feels weird… no Yang no Blake and I feel more like… I don't know something different than a huntress" Weiss brought a hand to her chin "We are not working as a team that's true, more like a military squad. But you heard what the teachers said, it wont be like this forever as soon as the teams can be reassigned things will go back to normal, different but normal"

"… what if I don't want that Weiss? I don't want things to change" Weiss stopped walking as she let out a sigh and decided to choose her words carefully, change was all she had ever wanted. To not have to live in the box that was created by her father and the company that had her last name but she would not lie that it stung to not have her friends here with her, she missed Blake and the way she approached every mission and not she would ever admit it to anyone but she also missed Yang's puns but she assumed that it had to do more with the person that told the puns rather than the puns themselves.

But even if she did not like it she could not go back. She did not want to be in Atlas anymore, her mother the only thing she missed of that cold and unforgiven place "I understand, but the ability to adapt is what make us different than everyone else. We need to evolve to keep going"

"Blood evolution, I know but even so… I can miss the old days right?' Weiss chuckled as memories of everyone she shared that room in Beacon flashed before her eyes "Of course, I also miss those days" as they arrived at the bullhead they watched as the other students entered the large machine as they dusted off their weapons and waved at them to get in.

Cardin surprisingly waited for them, when they got close he pointed with his thumb towards the cockpit "Something is going on there, no one wants to go in and speak with the headmistress. I would have gone but she doesn't like me so I was hoping that you could see what the hell is going on"

Ruby nodded as she dashed forward and knocked on the door "Hello, is everything okay" Glynda slammed the door open and looked at her students as she steadied her breathing "We need to get back to Vale now… this grimm where just a diversion there is a massive army of them heading to the city right now. We need to help them evacuate, Six is not responding and I cant contact General Ironwood"

Everyone in the machine turned as white as sheet of paper. Some cried, some simply knelt down while others like Cardin prepared their weapons, Weiss reached for her scroll and sent a brief message to her sister detailing the situation and she spotted Ruby doing the same with her dad "We are close to Vale… my god…" the pilot announced over the intercom as the students stared in horror at the giant black horde of monster that seemed to be closing in on the facility "What do we do headmistress?"

Glynda opened her mouth to speak but then closed it as she tried to think on what to do, they where almost infinite from all the species that they had record of she spotted Alfas and even some Ancient ones, the city could not win this war. They might not even be able to evacuate "We need to..."-"INCOMING SHIP!"

Weiss ran to the side of the bullhead as she tried to see what was the thing that was approaching them "… Vertibird" she muttered as the ship that Winter had described in her logs about the wasteland soared past them as the machine opened and a familiar figure came to view.

Six placed one boot on the ledge as he reached into his pocket, looking at the massive horde Weiss almost felt her passing out when Six pulled out a toy gun and pointed it at the beasts "What on Oum's name is he doing?" static erupted from the scrolls as something took control over them, a message to everyone on Vale and secretly also to the grimm lands.

A simple passage from an ancient book.

"And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder one of the four beasts saying come and see. And I looked and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death" Six pressed the button as everything went quiet.

The grimm stopped their march as something glowed above them, next to the broken moon a light seemed to be shining down on them, the students saw it too as they tried to get a better look at the thing in the skies. Then in a flash the clouds where burned and the skies where parted in half as light erupted down on the massive grimm army Six covered his eyes as the laser decimated the army it was over faster than he expected melted bone and fur seemed to be all that remained. Weiss held her hands close to her mouth as she witnessed destruction in such a massive scale that it was almost ludicrous to think about.

Six for his part simply nodded satisfied with the test "Clean up the rest" he spoke into his Pipboy as the robots illuminated the burnt land with laser rifle fire. He sent a message to Glynda to follow his ship to New Beacon as he placed the Euclid's C-Finder back in his pocket "That was… impressive, such power of destruction and you did not need to use the nuclear bomb" Cinder said as she sat next to him fiddling with her own PipBoy while also checking her scroll.

"Like I said we need to avoid using nuclear power as much as we can. I don't want your world to end up like mine"-"Shame then, the robots that you had following those children around found it. Traces of raw uranium beneath Remnants mountains ignored because it was not dust"

Six simply hummed as he closed his eyes.

Ironwood slammed his hands on the table as he stared in horror at the reports "How on earth… how did the Grimm move so fast? How did we not notice?!" Winter stood next to her boss as she watched the monsters all get closer and closer to the city.

Weiss was there she needed to get there and "And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder…" she knew those words. Winter felt her blood run cold when the skies parted and a massive laser decimated the grimm and the land around it.

"Archimedes… HE BUILT ARCHIMEDES?!" Winter felt rage consume her as she stared in disbelief at the scorched ground. Ironwood could only stare in shock as he watched the remaining grimm struggle to move as their flesh melted to their bones and their eyes fell out of their sockets "W-Winter what…"-"Sir permission to head to Vale, I need to get rid of that weapon ASAP"

Ironwood stared at the specialist and then nodded "Permission granted but do not destroy the weapon"-"Sir?" the general took some steps towards the window and let out a sigh "I am no fool Winter I see a declaration of war when I see one, the great evil that lives in our planet has taken the first move. She dares us to meet her unfathomable evil with the lives of our hunters… with our children's lives and by some miracle, you brought a monster to meet her on the battlefield."

"He is not… Six is more than what he was made to do" Winter said as Ironwood nodded "Maybe, but even if he is my conversation with paladin Nate still makes me wary of him"-"Then why?! Why don't you want the weapon off his hands?"

Ironwood said nothing as it clicked on her head "A decoy… you want to use him as bait"

"If he wins this war, he will be a hero. If he looses he has given us more than enough time to counterattack and free ourselves of the future that is to come"

Winter stared at the general for a second "Then we have to help him win" the specialist said as she prepared to leave, saluting before leaving for Vale she failed to see how Ironwood hardened his gaze as he stared at the horizon "Do we?"
