Chapter One
The three friends found themselves surrounded by alien foliage from the trees, flowers, and even what they assumed was grass under their feet. A short distance away was a dirt path that could only be a road as it was wide enough for a vehicle.
Arisa saw a flower that was the same color as Suzuka's hair and went over to pick it and show it to Suzuka. When the center of the flower lunged at her hand and started chomping with what looked like sharp teeth.
The girls screamed and ran towards the dirt path to get away from the foliage as they didn't know if any of the other foliage was as vicious as that innocent-looking flower.
Once they had calmed down that is when they realized the other three were not with them. Nanoha looked around for those beautiful burgundy eyes that she had caught a glimpse of, but to no avail, the three friends were alone.
Suzuka looked at the others and asked, "What do you think we should do now? How are we going to find the other three?"
Arisa looks up and down the dirt road and says, "Well, it looks like we have two choices: either we go right or left."
Nanoha looked in both directions but when she looked in a certain direction she could feel a pull drawing her in that direction. "I'm thinking we should go in this direction. I'm not exactly sure why, I just have a feeling it's the way we need to go."
Suzuka looked over at Arisa and then Nanoha saying, "It's as good a direction as any at this point, as long as we're not just staying in one spot. Because if we do that we'll never find any of them."
Arisa nodded her head in agreement and the three friends headed in the direction that Nanoha had indicated was probably the best direction.
After what felt like hours to the three friends they came to a clearing on the side of the road that had a water source. Deciding it was best to stop early and make camp for the night and get a fresh start in the morning.
Splitting up the chores, Arisa went to collect the wood, Suzuka got some water and Nanoha went through the bags that the goddess had given them to see what kind of supplies they had.
After making a meager meal Nanoha looked at her two friends over the blue flame of their campfire, "So, what do you think of all of this?"
Arisa pipes up, "It feels like I'm in a living video game."
"Or one of those crazy Isekai animes that have been a big rage lately," Suzuka says.
Nanoha nodded her head in agreement, "None of this seems real, but everything that we've experienced so far tells me that it is."
When it was time to sleep the girls decided to do what they do in anime and split the night into three parts to keep watch. As this world is still unknown to them they needed to keep an eye out overnight for the unknown.
In the morning after breakfast, Nanoha is still feeling that eerie sensation as if an unseen force is pulling her and her friends, but to where? The sound of their voices blended with a gentle crunch of dirt beneath our feet.
The feeling that something wasn't right Nanoha drew her sword and tightened her grip on it as she called to the others, "Stay alert," soon the tranquility of the moment was shattered.
A fierce and guttural roar erupts from the trees nearby. The trio whirls around as a monstrous-looking bear with red eyes crowned with vicious horns sprouting fangs from a prehistoric cat, bursts through the trees. They're adrenaline spikes, as the ground shakes beneath their feet with each step the beast takes bringing it closer to them. Its massive furred body brushes against nearby trees making the leaves fall in a dance. Nanoha could feel the heat emanating from the monstrous breath as it drew closer. It reared up on its hind legs, extending its powerful claws at them while letting out an ear-piercing roar.
"Look out!" Suzuka cried out, raising her weapon. The girls spread out, each readying themselves. The beast dropped down onto its four feet swinging its head and looking for its first target.
Nanoha could feel a warmth coming from her chest, the warmth radiating down her arms and into her sword. On instinct Nanoha said, "Shoot!" and a pink beam fired at the beast. The creature roared in pain, but it continued its assault, finding its target, Arisa.
Digging in its claws the beast charged at Arisa. Rolling out of the way and back on her feet, sword in hand, her grin feral. She's been itching for an outlet and this – this is perfect.
Suzuka's heart hammers in her chest, she's alert, her eyes darting between Arisa and the creature, fear and concern warring within her.
The beast roars its displeasure at missing its target. Pivoting and coiling its muscles, it again charges at Arisa. Thinking the beast was coming after her, Nanoha braces herself.
However, in its virus-infected mind, it only has one target, Arisa.
Arisa ducked underneath its sweeping horns. She can feel herself getting hot and channels that into her sword, with her eyes glowing with intensity as she unleashes a brilliant burst of flame toward the creature. The fire-covered sword struck its target, causing the beast to stagger back. The smell of singed hair permeated the air.
Not being able to stand seeing Arisa in danger Suzuka says, "Let me help." Feeling a cool and coming sensation Suzuka channels this into her sword. Ice forming on her sword she hits the ground near the beast, and a layer of ice forms beneath its feet. The beast, not able to keep its footing, slips and falls.
The trio used this opportunity to press their attack, showcasing their sword skills that they learned in the dojo. Arisa's blade arcs through the air, trailing heat as it sears the beast's flank. It roars in pain but does not falter. Suzuka's sword leaves a trail of cold air, as she slices into its side leaving frozen flesh.
Nanoha has been studying its movements - a dance of death she is determined to win. She binds her time, calculating.
Their battle rages on - a clash of steel and fury -until fatigue causes one of them to make a mistake. Suzuka's foot catches on a root causing her to crash to the ground with a gasp.
The beast sensing weakness digs its claws into the ice, it charges at the fallen girl.
*Not on my watch.*
Nanoha lunges forward in front of Suzuka, sword a blaze with a cherry blossom hue. With a resounding cry, she strikes true, "Shoot!" Power surges from the blade like a wave cresting over a breakwater.
The beast verses past Nanoha grazing her with its horn as it passes, and then it stops, its body convulses before it finally collapses to the ground, lifeless.
Painting, the girls regroup, exchanging odd looks over their newfound weapons. Arisa waves her still warm blade through the air leaving trails of heated distortion.
"It's like they're… alive," Suzuka marvels, touching her sword that frosts over nearby foliage.
Nanoha says nothing of the sharp pain flaring in her side - a badge of honor for shielding Suzuka. Doing her best to hide the pain but failing miserably.
The problem with childhood friends is they can see right through you. "Are you okay, Nanoha?" Arisa asked, noticing that Nanoha was hiding something.
Nanoha forced to smile. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little tired from the fight."
Like Arisa, Suzuka could see something wasn't right. "We have always seen right through you, Nanoha. We need to be able to be honest with each other," She said. "We can only support one another if we know what's going on."
Nanoha sighed, knowing Suzuka was right. She lifted her shirt, revealing a gash on her side. "It's not too bad," She lied. "I can handle it."
Arisa frowned. "You should have told us. You're putting yourself and us at risk by hiding your injuries." Arisa crossed her arms in anger. "This is just like when we were kids, always hiding things from us. Well, No More!"
Feeling a little guilty knowing that Nanoha had gotten injured protecting her. "Let me help," Suzuka offered, her eyes filled with concern. Suzuka placed her hand over the wound, and a soothing sensation washed over Nanoha as Suzuka's cooling healing magic went to work.
"Thank you," Nanoha whispered, grateful for Suzuka's care. As the pain subsided, "How did you know how to do that, Suzuka?"
"I don't know, it just came to me on instinct," Suzuka says. "Same with the ice magic that came out of my sword in the fight."
"Yes, the same with mine, I felt power building up and I let it pour out of my sword," Nanoha said.
"Same here with the fire that came out of mine," Arisa says. then she seemed to remember the discussion at hand. "No changing the topic Nanoha. Promise you won't keep things from us again, okay?" Arisa said, looking Nanoha in the eyes. "We need to trust each other if we're going to survive in this world and get back home."
Taking a deep breath, Nanoha nodded in defeat. "You're right. I promise."
Continuing down the path after their mid-day meal, Nanoha couldn't help but reflect on her determination to protect her friends. She thought about the risks involved and the weight of responsibility she now carried. *I will make sure they get home safe. *
"Hey, do you hear that?" Arisa whispered, interrupting Nanoha's thoughts.
"Sounds like… screaming," Suzuka said, a worried expression coming over her face.
Exchanging glances they rushed off towards the source of the noise. As they approached, they saw a group of Goblins surrounding helpless travelers, one of the humans was trying to fend them off with a wooden staff.
"Let's go!" Nanoha shouted charging forward, her sword at the ready. "Shoot!" Like before a pink beam shot forth from her sword, striking several Goblins and causing them to stagger back, and in the process cutting two of them in half.
Arisa and Suzuka join the fray, there's swords of Fire and Ice slashing through the air to fend off the Goblin attackers. The creatures hissed and snarled, but the girls fought fiercely, their shared determination driving them forward.
"Stay behind us!" Nanoha called out to the frightened travelers. "We'll protect you."
Sensing the tide was turning against them, the remaining Goblins began to retreat, scurrying back into the shadows of the forest where they came from.
"Is everyone all right?" Suzuka asked as Nanoha scanned the area for any lingering threats.
"Y-yeah, we're okay," One of the travelers stammered, still shaking from the attack. "Thank you so much for saving us."
"You're welcome," Suzuka said with a warm smile. Helping the travelers get their belongings together and finally saying goodbye.
About a mile down the road from where they left the travelers, a village unfolds before them, a tapestry of wooden structures and thatched roofs, an echo of ancient Japan nestled within this world of Dhara. The friends move through the streets, their senses assaulted by the fragrant aromas of cooking fires and the earthly scent of livestock. Villagers in traditional garb eye them with curiosity, their faces creased with lines of a hard-lived life, but not unkind.
"It's like stepping into a history book," Suzuka muses, her gaze sweeping over the thatched roofs, rice paper windows, and sliding doors.
Arisa agrees, "Yeah, but there's something… off. It's Japan, but not our Japan."
Exploring the village, they speak with the friendly locals, and take in the sites. They decide to find an inn and get a room for the night, so they can get a fresh start in the morning.
The trio are sitting at a table enjoying that world's version of a Japanese breakfast with mugs of fresh hot tea. Suzuka picks up her tea and gently sips the hot liquid, "This is a good time to get some supplies before we leave."
"What should we get?" Arisa asked.
"This world's version of camping gear I would think. We're going to need some more food supplies, and a change of clothing wouldn't be a bad idea either." Nanoha said.
After finishing their meal they thanked their server and headed out to the market. Gathering what they could for their unknown length of travel. Surprisingly, everything that they purchased fit into the bags that the goddess had given them.
As they slowly made their way out of the village they marveled at the crafted wooden shrine and the vibrant gardens that surrounded it. Despite being far from home, the familiarity of the village brought a sense of comfort.
Leaving the market area and heading out of the village the girls came across a merchant who was packing his cart. The merchant was a middle-aged man with a kind face and a bushy mustache.
Nanoha walked over to him, "Excuse me, sir, my friends and I are headed in that direction." Nanoha points in the direction she is feeling the pull coming from. "Would you happen to be going that way also?"
The merchant looked at them briefly before replying, "Indeed, I am, but I am on quite a bit of a long trip. How far do you plan to go?"
Not knowing how to answer Nanoha exchanged glances with Arisa and Suzuka, and with determined nods from each of them said, "Yes, well you see we are not sure of the answer. We just know we need to go in that direction. We can handle ourselves in dangerous situations if needed."
The merchant looked thoughtful then said, "Do you have provisions?"
Suzuka stepped forward and said, "Yes we do, and we can help with the cooking as well."
"Very well," The merchant agreed. "My name is Jiro, by the way."
"Thank you, Jiro. My name is Nanoha and my friends are Arisa and Suzuka." Nanoha replied.
Throughout their travels, Jiro tells the girls stories of his adventures as a merchant. The trio soaked up as much information about this new world as they could.
The four of them took turns cooking, and when beasts or other foes attacked the four of them worked as a team. Jiro knew how to cast a spell to protect themselves at night so no one had to keep watch. Suzuka picked this spell up quickly.
After a long week of hard travel, they came to a fork in the road. Nanoha could feel the pull coming from the road that Jiro was not going down.
"Jiro, can you stop for a moment?" Nanoha asked.
Jiro stopped his cart and looked at the girls and with the expressions on their faces he knew this is where they parted ways. Nanoha and her friends climbed out of the cart. Jiro also climbed down from his cart.
"Thank you, for all your help, Jiro," Nanoha said. Suzuka and Arisa also conveyed their thanks to Jiro.
"You're welcome. Though, I am sorry to see you girls go, but you must go your own way. Please take care of yourselves and hopefully, someday we'll meet again and then we can tell each other stories."
Jiro got back into his cart and continued down the road. The girls watched until his cart disappeared.
"Are you sure about this Nanoha?" Arisa asked.
"Yes, I can't explain why, but this is the way we need to go," Nanoha replied.
With Nanoha in the lead, the three friends made their way down the road which looked like it hadn't been used in many years. The further they went the spookier it got, trees were twisted and gnarled. There was an eerie fog that settled at the edge of the road.
"I don't like the looks of this," Suzuka said.
"Agreed," Arisa said.
Venturing deeper down the road until it became so overgrown that it was hard to tell the road from the forest. The pull that Nanoha was feeling was guiding her, although she was starting to second guess if this was a good thing or not.
"Nanoha, I'm going to ask this again, are you sure about this?" Arisa asked.
"Yes, I… I feel a pull coming from this way," Nanoha admitted, her voice just above a whisper.
"A pull? This is the first time you've mentioned this." Arisa says.
"It's hard to describe what it is. I just know that it's been a constant since we've gotten onto that dirt path when we first got here." Nanoha said.
"You need to stop keeping secrets from us," Arisa says in a heated voice.
Ever wanting to keep the peace, "All right, let's go. We'll just have to see this through to the end, and Nanoha we'll have a discussion about this tonight." Suzuka said.
Swallowing hard, nodding her head, Nanoha knew she had screwed up. She would rather take a verbal beating from Arisa, than a lecture from Suzuka any day.
Continued their track through the eerie road-turned woods following the pole that was growing stronger with each step. The twisted trees cast shadows that seemed to dance and shift as they walked, giving the forest an even more unsettling atmosphere.
The girls soon found themselves standing before I lost and ruined city overgrown with vegetation. The once magnificent and futuristic structures were now crumbling, half-consumed by the relentless march of nature. Despite the dilapidated state, the city exuded a sense of ancient grandeur and mystery.
"What is this place?" Arisa asked with wonder.
"An ancient city, long forgotten," Nanoha whispered.
"Let's be careful while we explore," Suzuka cautioned. "There might be unknown dangers lurking."
"Right," Nanoha agreed, "We've come this far. Let's see what has drawn us to this place."
Picking their way through the city, they couldn't help but feel an eerie sensation of being watched. Their hands gripped the hilts of their swords, as they navigated the narrow streets and alleys overgrown with plant life. The sun, now casting long shadows that seem to reach out towards them.
A soft rustling sound caught their attention.
"Did you hear that?" Arisa whispered.
"Maybe it's just the wind," Suzuka suggested.
Nanoha shook her head, "No, there's something here with us."
The three tensed, ready for battle, when a small, ferret-like creature emerged and approached them. Its fur shimmered with a green ethereal glow, and its eyes held intelligence.
"Hello," The creature said telepathically, its voice echoing inside their minds. "My name is Yuuno. I am a Guardian Mage, and have been waiting for your arrival."
"Yuuno?" Nanoha repeated, "You were the one who called us here, weren't you?"
"Yes," Yuuno affirmed. "The goddess sent me a message saying she has sent out for new Heroes to save our world. She also said that some of these Heroes will need help in learning how to use Magic."
"What do you think Nanoha, can we trust him?" Suzuka whispers.
Nanoha hesitated for a moment, considering their options. Then, she looked into Yuuno's eyes and felt a connection. "Yes," She decided, her voice firm. "I think we can trust him."
"Very well," Yuuno said out loud, "Follow me, I have set up lodging for all of you."
As the girls follow the Guardian Mage deeper into the forgotten city, Suzuka asks, "What happened here? Why was this city abandoned?"
With sorrow in his voice, he recounts the tales of a catechism that shattered civilizations and left scars upon the world that have yet to heal. "The First Colony when they came to our world didn't know it was bringing a great evil with it. One of the crew on one of the many ships that they had, had a great scientist named Jail Scaglietti. He was renowned for his technological breakthroughs, but he also had a dark side that he kept hidden from everyone else."
"Who are the First Colony and where did they come from?" Arisa asked.
Answering, Yuuno said, "The First Colony were refugees from a far-off world. Tired of the constant war that plagued their planet. They had set out on a mission to find a world that they could live in peace and in harmony with the planet they were living on."
Yuuno continued, "The natives of this world welcomed the newcomers, so long as they kept to their promise of wanting a peaceful life. The First Colony were long-lived people and so it took several centuries for them to establish a foothold in this world. This was also long enough for the scientist to establish his foothold and create his secret army."
Pausing to see if the girls had any questions and when none came he continued. "Jail had founded his own country and once his army was big enough, he began to take over his neighboring countries. When the First Colony's council of rulers heard about what was happening, they immediately went out to try and stop him, and that was the start of the 300-year war."
Yuuno stopped in front of a two-story house that was in better shape than the ones they had passed coming through the city. "I have prepared these houses for the heroes to use while you are in training." Yuuno points out the three houses for the girls to choose from.
The trio pick the center one and head in, they choose their rooms and settle in. The girls convened down in the living room where Yuuno was waiting for them. "I will start your magical training tomorrow. I will also continue to tell you about Jail and how he has been able to continue after such a crushing defeat in the first war."
After taking showers and getting the first restful sleep the girls had, had since arriving in this new world. They got up and met Yuuno downstairs. Having a light conversation over breakfast the girls and their magic instructor Yuuno headed out.
"First, we must awaken the dormant powers within you," Yuuno explained, leading them to a secluded area with ancient stone buildings. "Here, in the Grand Temple, we shall begin your magical training." They felt the energy in the space - it seemed to be alive with ancient power.
Nanoha raised her hand, "We sort of experimented with our powers on the way here."
Yuuno asked them to show him what they've learned so far. The display of raw power amazed him. "Looks like I have my work cut out for me. We need to find a way of having you focus your magical power so that you can use it in a better way."
He had them sit on the ground with their eyes closed, breathing deeply and clearing their minds. "To start, you must learn to focus your mental energies and establish a connection to the magical forces around you and within you." At first, it was a struggle to quiet their racing thoughts, but eventually, they tapped into a meditative state. That's when they felt it - a spark of power within each of them. This has a different feeling from the raw power they had used on their way to the city.
The days turned into weeks, their magical repertoire expanded. From conjuring protective barriers to orbs of light.
Arisa's fire elemental control - flames danced at her fingertips, conjured from her sheer will and channeled through her sword in arcs of incandescent fury.
Suzuka finds harmony in ice and healing - a gentle touch that mends wounds and summons barriers of frost that crystalline from thin air to shield her friends.
Nanoha's focus is precision not just raw power - the air crackles around her as she molds energy into forms both beautiful and destructive: orbs of light and a beam that rent through obstacles with devastating effects.
A gust of icy wind whipped through Fate's hair as she surveyed the snowy mountains that stretched out before her. She pulled her cloak tighter around her body, shivering slightly from the unexpected cold. This new world was full of surprises, and challenges. Beside her, Alicia also huddled against the chill, their breaths visible in the crisp mountain air.
Hayate stumbled through the desolate landscape, her heart pounding in her chest. The monsters she had only seen in anime were now all too real, chasing her relentlessly. Goblins snarled and snapped at her heels as she ran, their twisted faces contorted with malice.
