Chapter Ten
In the blistering heat, they trudged through on the hot sand, feet sinking in with each step. Beads of sweat trickle down their faces. Fate looks over at Alph, who is struggling to keep up. her poor familiars feet were starting to blister from the hot sand.
"Alph, come here," Nanoha said, concern on her face. Fate watched as Nanoha tore strips of cloth and knelt by Alph's side. she gently wrapped the fabric around her familiars feet.
"Thank you, Nanoha," Alph whimpered, nuzzling and giving a little lick to her cheek. Nanoha chuckled at the display, her cheeks flushed a rosy pink.
*If only those kisses were from me,* Fate thought, feeling an unfamiliar pang of jealousy well up within her. She couldn't help but admire Nanoha's soft lips, imagining what it would be like to press her own against them. *No, I shouldn't be thinking about that. We have more important things to focus on right now.*
"Alright, let's keep moving," Nanoha announced, rising to her feet.
Arisa asked, "Hey, Alph, why don't you transform into your human form?"
Alph replied, "My human skin would burn faster than the pads on my feet."
After about an hour the heat was starting to get to Suzuka, Arisa seeing this said, "We need to head back. We aren't prepared for this kind of heat or blistering sun."
Leaving behind the sand and dunes, the air gradually cooled, bringing much-needed relief to the weary heroes.
"Finally, some relief." Arisa said, "Let's take a break in the cooler air."
"Indeed, I agree let's cool down before we continue and while we're at it let's have some lunch." Nanoha agreed, smiling warmly over at Fate.
Fate returned the smile, her heart skipping a beat at the sight of Nanoha's radiant expression. *I wish I could tell her how I feel,* She thought, her chest tightening with a mix of longing and fear. *But would she even want someone like me? A mere copy of Alicia?*
Sitting down underneath a shade tree they enjoyed a leisure meal. Nanoha and Fate would sneak glances at each other. Suzuka and Arisa could see the sneaked looks between the two across from them.
After they finished eating and had rested, "Let's head out," Fate said.
With renewed vigor, the group pressed on, the cool breeze a welcome respite from the oppressive heat. As they trekked through the gradually changing landscape, Fate couldn't help but steal glances at Nanoha, her thoughts filled with uncertainty and a quiet yearning that refused to be silenced.
They came across a small town that had managed to defend itself from the attackers. The buildings were battered but still standing, a testament to the resilience of its inhabitants. As they entered the market, they resupplied their provisions and water, keenly aware of the wary gazes of the townspeople.
"Thank you for your help," Nanoha said politely as she paid a merchant for some bread and fruit. "We'll be on our way soon."
"Stay safe out there," The merchant replied gruffly, eyeing the group with a mix of curiosity and suspicion. Fate couldn't blame them – they were strangers after all.
The group continued on their journey Nanoha walked closer to Fate, their shoulders brushing occasionally. Fate felt her cheeks heat up at the contact, but she remained oblivious to Nanoha's growing feelings for her. Her thoughts were consumed by doubts about her own worth and her struggle to open up emotionally to anyone.
"Are you alright, Fate?" Nanoha asked gently, concern evident in her voice.
"Y-yes, I'm fine," Fate stuttered, cursing herself for her inability to express her true emotions. *Why can't I just tell her how much she means to me?*
"Good," Nanoha said with a relieved smile. "I wouldn't want anything to happen to you." She paused, her eyes lingering on Fate's face before she looked away, a faint blush dusting her cheeks. "You're a very important friend to me."
Fate's heart raced, and she struggled to keep her expression neutral. *Does she really mean that? Or is she just being kind because she sees me as Alicia's sister?* "Th-thank you, Nanoha," She managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper. "That means a lot to me."
Continuing onward, Fate couldn't help but feel a growing sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, there was a chance that Nanoha could come to care for her as more than a friend. But first, she would have to find the courage to open up and share her true feelings with the girl who had captivated her heart.
That night Arisa pulled Nanoha aside, her expression serious. "You need to tell Fate how you feel before it's too late," She urged.
Nanoha hesitated, unsure of what Fate's reaction might be. She had noticed her growing feelings for Fate, admiring her strength and kindness. Whenever their hands accidentally brushed against each other, warmth bloomed in Nanoha's cheeks. And when she dreamed at night, she knew deep down that the eyes in her dreams belonged to none other than Fate.
"Is it… really that obvious?" Nanoha asked nervously.
"Only to those who know you well," Arisa replied with a knowing smile. "But you can't keep dancing around your feelings forever. Trust me, confessing is better than living with regret."
"Thank you, Arisa," Nanoha said, feeling grateful for her friend's advice. With newfound determination, she decided that she would find the right time to express her true feelings to Fate.
Suzuka approached Fate while she was alone, her demeanor gentle and supportive. "I think you should open up to Nanoha's friendship and affection," Suzuka suggested softly. "Nanoha has always accepted people as they are, and always will. If it wasn't for her, Arisa and I wouldn't be together. She's the one who helped us become friends."
Fate looked at Suzuka, considering her words carefully. It was true that Nanoha had a big heart and never judged others. But could she accept someone like Fate, a mere copy of her sister?
"Are you sure?" Fate asked, her voice wavering slightly. "I'm not like you."
"Absolutely, whether you're from our world or another world," Suzuka replied with confidence. "Nanoha sees the good in everyone, and she's always been there for us. Give her a chance, and I'm sure you'll find that she feels the same way about you."
Fate felt a spark of hope ignite within her as she contemplated Suzuka's advice. Maybe it was time to take a leap of faith and trust in Nanoha's ability to love her for who she truly was, regardless of her origins. With renewed courage, Fate decided that she would follow Suzuka's suggestion and open up to Nanoha, embracing the possibility of a deeper connection between them.
"Thank you, Suzuka," Fate whispered. With this coming from one of Nanoha's closest friends it carried more weight than it would have.
Every time Fate thought she found a time to confess her feelings, something would interrupt them, either they ran into monsters or it was never the right time.
After a fierce battle with a small army outside of a town the exhausted heroes went in looking for rest and to resupply. While talking with some of the townspeople getting supplies they overheard of another group coming in to also get supplies not two days prior.
By the description that was given, it was the other half of their group. Getting the direction they didn't waste any time and headed straight out to try and catch up to them. After a day of hard travel, they finally caught up with the other half of their group.
The sun was just beginning to set when Alph caught the scent of Alicia. Guiding Nanoha's group straight to the camp. With the two groups reunited they expanded the campsite, so they could exchange stories of their adventures.
The solemn stories were told with reverence and humility. That's also when Fate found out that she almost lost her sister after Alicia showed Fate the scar.
"Are you alright?" Fate asked her sister, concerned about her injury.
Alicia smiled reassuringly. "It's nothing serious, just a scratch from our last battle."
"Be more careful next time," Fate urged, her worry for her sister's well-being evident.
"Of course," Alicia says.
Fate looked around and moved further away from the group, asking, "Hey, have you heard of deflowering before?"
Hearing the question Alicia laughed. "Where did you hear that?"
"I heard Nanoha say it after she was attacked by a monster in the water," Fate says. "Why?"
"Tell me what she said," Alicia replies.
Fate stopped to think, "If this was a hentai anime I would be deflowered and killed by now."
"Well, I don't know what a hentai anime is, but deflowering is taking a girl's first time." Alicia smiles at Fate.
Fate turns bright red, "Her first time? You mean like that, first time?"
"Yup, that first time…" Not wanting to embarrass Fate any further, Alicia turns her attention to the progress of Nanoha. "So, any progress with Nanoha?"
Fate, still red, hesitated before shaking her head. "No, not yet."
Alicia sighed, disappointment clear in her expression. "Fate, can't you see what I see in her eyes? She cares about you."
"Maybe," Fate admitted, casting a glance towards Nanoha, who was laughing with Arisa by the fire. "I'll try talking to her tonight."
"Good," Alicia said, patting her sister's shoulder encouragingly. "You deserve happiness too, Fate."
Later that night, as the moon cast its pale light over the camp, Nanoha and Fate ventured into the nearby woods to gather firewood. The silence between them was heavy with unspoken emotions, and Fate could feel her heart racing in her chest as she mustered the courage to speak her mind.
"Hey, Fate," Nanoha began, her voice soft and hesitant. "There's something I've been wanting to tell you..." The sound of the wood in Nanoha's hands falling to the ground echoed through the air...
As Nanoha started to confess her feelings, Fate's breath caught in her throat, anticipation and hope mingling within her. But before she could even process Nanoha's words, a sudden, sharp object erupted through Nanoha's back.
Fate's eyes widened in horror as she saw the blades emerging from Nanoha's chest, stained crimson with her blood. Time seemed to slow down as Nanoha looked down at her wound, shock, and confusion painting her face before the blades were slowly withdrawn.
"Wha...?" was all Nanoha managed to utter before starting to collapse to the ground, leaving Fate standing there, frozen in terror and disbelief.
The world seemed to slow down as Nanoha's limp body tumbled towards the ground. Fate's heart clenched with fear, her instincts taking over as she dove forward, arms outstretched. The impact jarred her, but she managed to catch Nanoha just in time, cradling her in a protective embrace.
"Na... Nanoha!" Fate cried out, her voice shaking with fear and panic. "I've got you," She whispered, relief flooding her veins for a moment before reality snapped back into focus. A sinister laughter echoed around them, and Fate's eyes narrowed on the assassin who had hurt Nanoha.
"Stay away from her!" Fate snarled, whipping out Bardiche in one fluid motion. She slashed violently at the laughing figure, her anger fueling each powerful stroke.
Her heart pounded violently against her chest when her eyes locked onto a grinning woman, her fingers tipped with bloody daggers. The woman licked Nanoha's blood from her blades nonchalantly, clearly unfazed by the brutal act she had just committed.
"Ah, this taste," The woman purred, a twisted smile curling her lips. "It's been so long since I've had fresh prey."
"Who are you?" Fate growled, her grip tightening on Bardiche as she prepared herself for battle. "And why did you attack Nanoha?"
"Isn't it obvious?" The woman's grin widened, revealing cruel, white, and red teeth. "Well, that's one down, five more to go." She declared her intention to kill them all, her eyes flicking over Fate's shoulder towards the camp where their friends were still blissfully unaware of the danger.
"You will never know when I will be right behind you," The assassin taunted, nimbly dodging Fate's attacks. "Until I taste your blood, I would be on the lookout if I were you." Her laughter faded into the shadows of the forest, leaving Fate trembling with rage.
"I won't let you touch her again," She vowed, her voice barely audible even to herself. Carefully, she scooped up Nanoha's limp form, holding her close as if trying to shield her even now. The blood-staining Nanoha's shirt seemed to grow darker, more sinister in the dim light.
Fate's heart squeezed painfully at the threat, but she quickly pushed her fear aside. Ignoring the pain and dizziness clouding her thoughts, she pressed her hands against the gaping wound in Nanoha's back, trying to staunch the flow of blood.
"Stay with me, Nanoha," Fate pleaded, her voice trembling as she fought back tears. "You can't leave me like this!"
Nanoha's eyes fluttered closed, her breathing growing shallower by the second. Her hand reached up weakly, grasping Fate's wrist as if to reassure her. Fate could feel her resolve crumbling as she watched Nanoha slipping away, but she refused to give up.
"Help!" She screamed into the night, praying that someone would hear her cry for help. "Arisa! Suzuka! Anyone, please help!"
As the darkness closed in around them, Fate could only hold onto Nanoha's fading warmth, her heart breaking as she realized that her chance to confess her feelings might have been lost forever.
Turning Fate started running, "Please, stay with me," Fate whispered as she carried her precious burden back to camp. Her thoughts raced, each step filling her with a desperate urgency. "You can't leave me like this, Nanoha."
