Chapter Eleven
"Please, don't die," Fate choked out, praying that the woman she loved would somehow find the strength to keep fighting. "I need you, Nanoha. We all do."
"Hey, Fate..." Nanoha's voice was barely a whisper, her eyes barely open. "There's something I have to tell you before I die."
"You're not going to die, Nanoha." Fate's heart clenched at the thought, and she forced a hopeful smile onto her face, trying to be strong for both of them.
Nanoha looked into Fate's eyes, and despite the pain she must have been feeling, a small, gentle smile appeared on her lips. "I'm glad to hear that," She said softly, her voice filled with affection.
Fate could feel her chest tighten as she held Nanoha, her mind racing with thoughts of what the future might hold. There was no way she would let this assassin take away the person she cared about most in the world. She would protect Nanoha with everything she had, even if it meant facing down an entire army.
"Everything will be alright, Nanoha," Fate whispered, her voice shaking ever so slightly. "I promise you, we'll get through this."
A flicker of spark in Nanoha's eyes, and she nodded weakly. "I trust you," She murmured, her words barely audible.
As they stared into each other's eyes, both knowing the difficult road they had ahead, Fate felt a surge of love and protectiveness for the woman in her arms. With that promise in her heart, Fate held Nanoha close, determined to keep her safe and alive, no matter what it took.
Fate felt Nanoha's body growing heavier in her arms, and she knew that she had little time left to get the help needed. She tightened her grip on Nanoha, not wanting to let go even for a second.
"Stay with me, Nanoha," Fate pleaded, her voice laced with worry and determination. "I won't let you go."
Nanoha's eyes fluttered, and her smile grew weaker. "Still, I want to tell you that... I love... you," She whispered, struggling to keep her eyes open.
A warm feeling spread through Fate's chest upon hearing Nanoha's confession. But before she could respond, Nanoha's eyes closed, and her head lolled to the side – unconscious.
"I love you too, Nanoha," Fate said, tears rolling down her cheeks. Her heart ached that Nanoha couldn't hear her response, but it only fueled her resolve to save the woman she loved.
With newfound determination, Fate focused her energy on getting them back to camp as quickly as possible. She knew that Shamal and Suzuka would do everything in their power to heal Nanoha and that their friends would be there to support and protect them.
Fate's heart pounded in her chest as she flew at breakneck speed towards the camp, Nanoha's limp body cradled in her arms. The wind whipped past them, but all Fate could hear was the ragged sound of Nanoha's shallow breaths.
Entering the campsite, Fate called for help, her voice cracking under the weight of her emotions. "Suzuka, Shamal! I need your help, it's Nanoha – she's dying!" Fate clung to Nanoha, terrified that letting go would mean losing her forever.
Suzuka and Shamal rushed to their side, their faces etched with concern. As Shamal began to examine Nanoha's wounds, Suzuka quickly prepared a healing spell, her hands glowing with a soft violet light. Together, they worked tirelessly, casting spell after spell over Nanoha's torn, bleeding torso, trying to stabilize her condition.
Hayate and Signum took Nanoha out of Fate's arms and gently set her down. Fate made a wounded animal sound in her throat when her love was taken from her.
"Damn it, Fate! How could you let this happen?" Arisa shouted, her face contorted with rage and grief. She grabbed Fate roughly by the shoulders, shaking her as if to wake her from a nightmare.
Alicia swiftly stepped between them, separating Fate from Arisa. With a gentle touch, she checked Fate for any injuries while trying to calm Arisa down. "Now's not the time for blame, Arisa. We need to focus on helping Nanoha and to do that we need information."
Fate remained silent, biting her lip to keep from crying out in frustration. Her mind raced with thoughts of guilt and worry, and she couldn't help but think that if only she had been more vigilant, this wouldn't have happened. But as Alicia tended to her, Fate knew she couldn't let her emotions consume her. Nanoha needed her now more than ever, and she would do whatever it took to ensure her love's survival.
"Please," Fate whispered, her eyes locked on Nanoha's pale face. "You have to save her."
Fate's chest tightened as she watched Shamal and Suzuka continue their healing work on Nanoha. Still feeling Arisa's grip on her shoulders, the lingering sting of blame. When Alicia's voice pulled her back to the present.
Looking into her sister's eyes, "Fate, tell us what happened," Alicia asked, scanning Fate's body for injuries.
Trying to collect her thoughts, "Ah…" The memory of the attack is still fresh in her mind. She took a deep breath and started to speak. "We were walking together, talking. Suddenly… Nanoha just stopped. When I turned to see what was wrong. I saw her."
"Her?" Alicia asked.
"An assassin," Fate replied, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and fear. "She had knives for fingers, and they were embedded in Nanoha." As she spoke, she couldn't help but glance at the unconscious form of her love, feeling a surge of protectiveness and sorrow.
"Then..." Fate continued, struggling to hold back tears, "As the woman pulled the knives out of Nanoha, she said that's one down and five more to go."
The air grew heavy with tension and unease, each person processing the grim reality of the threat they now face. Somewhere out there was an assassin bent on killing all of them.
"Damn it," Arisa muttered under her breath, her anger giving way to worry. "What kind of sick monster would do this?"
"Someone who needs to be stopped," Alicia declared firmly. "But first, we need to make sure Nanoha pulls through."
As if echoing her sentiment, a determined resolve flickered in Fate's eyes. She knew she couldn't afford to let guilt or anger consume her – not when Nanoha's life was hanging in the balance.
"Thank you, Alicia," Fate whispered. "I won't let anything like this happen again."
"None of us will," Alicia assured her.
The rest of their companions snapped into action, weapons at the ready as they scanned the darkness for any sign of the attacker. Signum and Zafira stood back-to-back, their eyes narrowed and alert. Vita and Rynith moved in tandem, their movements swift and precise. Arisa and Reinforce took up positions near the campfire, their faces grim with determination. Alph and Hayate guarded the perimeter, communicating silently through shared glances.
"Stay with us, Nanoha," Suzuka said softly, her hands glowing with healing magic as she worked on her friend's internal wounds.
"Shamal, is there anything else we can do?" Hayate asked, her voice filled with concern but also laced with authority.
"Her injuries are severe, but we'll keep doing everything we can," Shamal replied, her own hands glowing with healing energy as she concentrated on her task.
Walking over to Nanoha, Fate dropped to her knees, "Please, don't leave me," Fate whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "I need you."
Fate refused to leave Nanoha's side, even when it was her turn to stand guard. When she wasn't scanning the shadows for any sign of danger, she held Nanoha's hand, willing her strength to flow into the unconscious girl. She could feel the cold sweat on Nanoha's skin, her face worryingly pale as she clung to life.
"Why did this happen?" Fate thought bitterly. "Who would want to hurt her like this?"
"Hey, Fate," Arisa called out quietly from her position by the fire, careful not to disturb the others. "You've got to take care of yourself too, you know. We're all worried about Nanoha, but we need you at your best too."
Fate nodded, her grip on Nanoha's hand tightening ever so slightly. "I know," She replied softly. "I just... I can't lose her."
"None of us want that," Suzuka added, glancing up from her healing work. "But you need to trust us, Fate. We're doing everything we can to save her."
The campsite was a mix of tense vigilance and quiet hope. The sounds of the forest seemed amplified, every rustle or snap of a twig causing heads to turn and weapons to be raised.
Fate clenched her fist, nails digging into her palm as a burning rage ignited within her. She stared into the darkness of the forest, her eyes narrowed and her breathing heavy. The assassin had made a grave mistake by hurting Nanoha, and Fate would make sure she paid for it with her life.
"Enough," Alicia whispered gently, placing a hand on Fate's tense shoulder. "You're just wasting energy on anger right now. I need you to stay focused."
"Promise me, Alicia," Fate said softly, her voice wavering with emotion. "Promise me that you'll help me find this assassin and make her pay for what she has done to Nanoha."
Alicia gave her a determined nod, "I promise, Fate. We'll find her together."
Suzuka and Shamal healed Nanoha all night long just to stabilize her. Fate stared at Nanoha's unconscious form, her heart aching with unspoken words. She couldn't shake the memory of Nanoha's confession before she had passed out, and it weighed heavily on her.
Shamal and Suzuka are now taking turns healing Nanoha. Nanoha's external injuries have healed mostly, angry red welts are all that are left, now the hard part is the damage to her internal organs.
Alicia moved over to sit next to Fate and give her a chance to rest a bit, as Fate has not had any sleep.
"She told me she loves me," Fate said to Alicia, her voice barely above a whisper. "She passed out before I could tell her the same."
Alicia squeezed her sister's hand, offering a comforting smile. "Don't worry, Fate. You'll have plenty of time to tell her when she wakes up."
"Is she going to wake up?" The question came out more vulnerable than Fate intended, but it was a fear she couldn't suppress any longer.
Shamal and Suzuka exchanged worried glances across Nanoha's prone body, Shamal's hands glowing with healing magic as she continued to work on Nanoha.
"Her condition is still critical," Shamal admitted, sweat beading on her forehead from the strain. "But we're doing everything we can."
Suzuka nodded, "We'll keep fighting for her, just like she would for us."
Suzuka and Shamal continue to take turns throughout the next day going well into the night.
Around the campsite, the group kept vigil, watching and scanning the shadows for any sign of danger. Every rustle of leaves or snap of a twig set their nerves on edge, their weapons at the ready.
"Stay strong, Nanoha," Fate thought, her gaze never leaving her love's pale face. "I'm right here, and I won't let anyone harm you again."
If Fate wasn't looking at Nanoha, she stared into the darkness, her heart pounding in her chest as she tried to pierce the shadows with her eyes. Fate thought, gripping Bardiche tightly. "I won't let her hurt you again."
"Everything okay?" Alicia asked quietly, concern etched on her features as she moved closer to her sister.
Fate glanced at her, forcing a strained smile. "Just worried about Nanoha. I can't shake the feeling that... that woman is still watching us."
"Who will be next?" A chilling voice whispered from the shadows, causing Fate to stand up and get into a fighting stance, gripping Bardiche.
"Show yourself!" Fate shouted, her anger bubbling over. The group tensed around her, weapons raised as they scanned the darkness for any hint of movement.
A sinister chuckle echoed through the night air, sending shivers down their spines. "You're all so desperate to protect your precious friend," The voice taunted. "But it's just a matter of time before I strike again."
Signum growled. "Coward! Face us!"
Vita with her hammer ready, "Come out here and fight us!"
Hayate and Reinforce ready their magic for any type of attack.
Arisa's saber was on fire and so was her temper. She wanted to strike back at the person who hurt her best friend.
"Patience, my dear heroes," The voice replied mockingly. "You'll all get your chance soon enough." And then, with one last laugh, her presence seemed to vanish, leaving the group on edge and even more determined to protect their own.
Fate clenched her fists, her body trembling from the effort to control her anger. "I swear, when I find her, I'll make her pay for what she's done to Nanoha," She thought darkly.
"Hey," Alicia said gently, placing a hand on Fate's shoulder. "We'll find her and make sure she can't hurt any of us again."
"Thank you, Alicia," Fate said, her voice strained but grateful. She cast one last glance at Nanoha's unconscious form, then turned her attention back to the darkness surrounding them. "Let's keep watch. We can't afford to let our guard down."
Due watched from a hidden vantage point, a cruel smile playing on her lips. "Enjoy your peace while it lasts," She whispered, her eyes cold and merciless. "Soon enough, I'll be coming for you all." With that, she slipped away into the night, her laughter echoing through the trees like a promise of pain and sorrow yet to come.
