Chapter Twelve
On the third day, Fate watched with a mix of relief and worry as Nanoha stirred in her sleep, her breathing coming more easily than it had during the past few days. The campfire's flickering light cast a warm glow on Nanoha's still-pale face, thankfully color is slowly returning to her cheeks.
"Shamal, Suzuka," Fate whispered, turning to the healers by her side. "Is it safe to move her?"
Shamal shared a glance with Suzuka before nodding hesitantly. "Yes, but we need to be extremely cautious. Her internal wounds are still healing, and any unnecessary stress could cause complications."
"Then let's begin," Fate said, determination filling her voice. She knew they couldn't afford to stay put for much longer, not with the threat of the assassin still looming over them.
Together, they rigged up a makeshift stretcher from sturdy branches and soft blankets, ensuring it would provide ample support for Nanoha's still-fragile body. With utmost care, they lifted her onto the stretcher, Fate holding her breath as she tried to keep her hands steady.
"Are you ready?" Suzuka asked, her eyes filled with concern. Fate nodded, swallowing her nerves.
"Let's go," Fate said.
As night fell, the group made camp in a small clearing, surrounded by the towering trees that concealed them from any potential threats. Hayate stood watch at the edge of the campsite, her sharp eyes scanning their surroundings as she muttered under her breath, casting detection spells throughout the area. She knew better than anyone that they couldn't risk another surprise attack.
"Hayate," Fate called out, joining her at the perimeter. "How is everything?"
"Quiet for now," Hayate replied, her gaze never wavering from the darkness beyond. "But we must remain vigilant. The assassin could still be out there."
"I know," Fate agreed. Taking a deep breath, she looked back at Nanoha's peaceful form, nestled in her makeshift bed. Her heart clenched with worry, knowing that they were far from safe.
"Let's take turns on watch," Fate suggested, and Hayate nodded in agreement. "We all need rest, but we can't afford to let our guard down."
"Agreed," Hayate said, her voice firm. "I'll take the first shift. You should get some sleep, Fate."
Fate hesitated, torn between her desire to protect Nanoha and her exhaustion. But she knew that if they were to survive this journey, they'd have to rely on one another and trust in their abilities. Finally, with a sigh, she nodded.
"Alright," She murmured, forcing herself to turn away from Nanoha to get her bedroll and put it next to her love. As she lay down, her thoughts remained focused on the girl who had changed her life, praying that they would make it through this ordeal unscathed. And perhaps, one day, she could find the courage to confess her true feelings to Nanoha. Taking Nanoha's hand Fate fell into a fitful sleep.
The cool night air brushed against Fate's cheeks as she sat by the crackling campfire, her burgundy eyes flickering between the dancing flames and the sleeping form of Nanoha. It had been a while since their encounter with the assassin, and while Nanoha's condition had improved. Her heart ached with the weight of her unspoken feelings, a burden that grew heavier with each passing day.
"Hey," A gentle voice called out to Fate, pulling her from her thoughts. She turned to see Alicia approaching, her sister's concerned gaze meeting hers. "You've been quiet lately. What's on your mind?"
Fate hesitated before finally admitting, "It's about Nanoha. I... I have feelings for her, but I'm not sure if I deserve to love or be loved in return."
Alicia's expression softened as she sat down beside Fate, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Why would you think that?" She asked sincerely.
"Because I'm a clone," Fate whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "I'm just a copy of you. How could someone like me ever hope to find love?"
"Listen to me, Fate," Alicia said firmly, her eyes locking onto Fate's. "You are your own person, regardless of where you came from or who you share your DNA with. You have your own experiences, your own emotions, and your own desires. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."
Fate blinked back tears, touched by her sister's words but still struggling to believe them. "But I still need to tell her," She insisted, her resolve steadying. "I need to let Nanoha decide if she can love a copy of you."
Alicia smiled warmly at Fate, squeezing her shoulder reassuringly, she said. "I'll support you, no matter what. But remember, you're not just a copy of me. You're Fate Testarossa, and you deserve love as much as anyone else."
Fate's heart swelled with gratitude for her sister, the warmth of Alicia's presence helping to ease the burden on her soul. She met Alicia's gaze once more, nodding resolutely.
"Thank you, Alicia," Fate whispered. "I still don't see it," She murmured, her voice barely audible above the gentle sounds of the night. Her fingers toyed with a loose thread on her cloak, unconsciously seeking something to ground her.
Alicia glanced at her sister, concern etched across her features. She shifted closer, resting a hand on Fate's knee and giving it a reassuring squeeze. "I know it's hard to accept right now, but you can't keep doubting yourself forever."
Fate looked up, meeting Alicia's warm gaze. "But how can I be sure that Nanoha would even consider loving someone like me? Someone who isn't completely real?"
"Because, despite your origins, you have a heart and soul just like the rest of us," Alicia replied firmly. "And I believe Nanoha is compassionate enough to see past those superficial details."
Fate bit her lip, hesitating for only a moment before confessing her deepest fear. "What if I tell her the truth and she rejects me?"
"Then it will be her loss," Alicia said, her conviction unwavering. "But I have faith in her, and more importantly, I have faith in you. Maybe Nanoha will be the one to convince you that you are worthy of love."
Fate took a deep breath, her chest tightening at the thought of revealing her secret to Nanoha. She knew that her feelings were genuine, but could she truly expect Nanoha to reciprocate once she finds out the truth?
"Thank you, Alicia," Fate whispered, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "Your support means everything to me."
"Always, little sister," Alicia promised, her own eyes shining with emotion. "No matter what happens, I've always got your back."
Entering the first town in over a week they decide to get a room for the night, then gather supplies and make a plan on where to go next. Some of the rumors said that the queens of the affected countries were gathering their armies. Their goal is to protect their subjects from the onslaught of the monster armies.
Signum and Hayate started strategizing and coming up with a plan. "Despite the looming conflict, I believe our chance lies with the city's defenses. Time is of the essence, and we must make haste." Signum said.
"I agree, a bigger city or even a capital would be our best bet," Hayate said.
"Yes but there's a problem," Alicia said, "We're here," Alicia pointed to their position on the map. "And the nearest city is over here." Pointing to the closest city which was on the other side of the rumored armies.
"We'll have to make that judgment call the closer we get," Hayate said.
"Are you sure about this?" Arisa asked. Looking over to Nanoha's unconscious body. "This seems like it might be too dangerous."
"None of us are strangers to danger," Signum replies, her gaze steady. "We must trust in our abilities and stay focused on our goals."
"If it's deemed too dangerous when we get there, we can always go around and have this forest cover our movements," Hayate said, pointing out the forest just to the side of where they needed to go with some weird writing. Hayate assumed it was the name of the forest.
Reinforce shifted nervously in the background at the forest that her Master was pointing out. The other Knights also looked slightly nervous at this prospect.
"Your nervous reactions are making me wonder if this forest is safe," Alicia said.
"That forest is part of the Elven lands, so we must be cautious as they do not like outsiders," Vita said, looking over to Reinforce.
Hayate looked at her Knights, "I see, then we'll have to make that decision when we get there also." Hayate said. "This is unfortunately our best option. not unless anybody else can come up with a better plan than this?"
The group nodded in agreement, Fate was reluctant, especially the thought of putting Nanoha back into harm's way. She glanced at the makeshift stretcher where Nanoha lay, still weak but slowly improving day by day.
Fate walked over to the stretcher and brushed her fingers against Nanoha's pale cheek. "I promise, I'll protect you no matter what." She whispered.
"Hey, Fate," Hayate said softly, "We'll all do everything we can to keep Nanoha safe, and I think taking her to a city is the best way."
"Thank you, Hayate," Fate said.
Suzuka and Arisa tried to find a cart to put Nanoha in, so it would be easier to transport her. Sadly, they didn't find anything that would be big enough to hold her right.
The two carrying Nanoha that day were Vita and Alicia; they worked together to lift Nanoha as gently as possible. Signum and Shamal took the lead, guiding them towards the city.
Fate walked alongside Nanoha's stretcher, her gaze flitting between the path ahead and her injured love. Nanoha's eyes occasionally fluttered open, but she remained too weak to speak. The sight of her in such a fragile state filled Fate with an unspoken agony, as well as a desperate need to confess her feelings – to let Nanoha know just how much she meant to her.
"Almost there," Signum called out from the front, her voice steady and reassuring. "There's a river up ahead where we can stop to rest, have lunch and refresh ourselves."
As the group approached the riverbank, Fate couldn't help but notice how beautiful the area was, almost like a scene from a painting. The water sparkled under the sunlight, and lush greenery surrounded them. It was a serene oasis, a brief respite from the danger that had become their constant companion.
"Alright, everyone," Hayate announced, setting down their packs. "Let's take a break here."
Fate watched as Alicia and Vita carefully lowered Nanoha's stretcher onto the soft grass, taking extra care not to jostle her too much. She felt a surge of gratitude towards them for their unwavering support.
"Hey," Alicia whispered to Fate, her eyes filled with understanding. "Why don't you go sit with her for a while? I'll make lunch this time."
"Thank you," Fate murmured, her cheeks coloring slightly at the implication. She hesitated for a moment before finally taking a seat beside Nanoha and gently brushing a strand of hair away from her face.
"Hi, Nanoha," She whispered, her voice barely audible. "I hope you're feeling better. We're at a beautiful river now; I just wish you could see it."
Nanoha's eyes fluttered open again, and for a moment, their gazes locked. Fate felt her heart stutter in her chest, but before she could say anything more, Nanoha's eyes closed once more.
"Stay strong," Fate murmured, swallowing the lump in her throat. "We'll get through this, I promise."
"Alright," Hayate said, "We have a choice to make. We can either head straight to the city or head closer to the Elven lands to avoid the army we were warned about. What do you all think?"
"Vita and I will go scout out the area," Signum said.
"Stay safe," Hayate called out, her voice laced with concern.
Vita gave a small nod, her grip on Graf Eisen firm and unwavering. "Don't worry about us," She replied, a hint of a smile tugging at her lips. "We'll be back before you know it."
Signum added, "We'll report any signs of danger so we can make an informed decision about our path."
When Signum and Vita finally returned, their expressions were grim. "There are military camps and troop movements ahead," Signum reported, her voice tense. "It would be unwise to continue this way."
"Then we'll have to go closer to the Elven lands to avoid the army," Hayate declared after some contemplation, her tone resolute.
Arisa crossed her arms, clearly not thrilled by the prospect. "Are you sure about that?" She asked, her brow furrowed. "What if we run into trouble with the Elves?"
Suzuka placed a reassuring hand on Arisa's arm, her gentle eyes locked onto hers. "We don't have much of a choice, do we?"
As the group began their journey closer to the Elven lands, Fate couldn't help but notice that Reinforce seemed to be unusually quiet. The powerful mage, who usually carried herself with an air of confidence and grace, now seemed tense and lost in thought. Though she tried to hide her discomfort, her eyes couldn't help but be drawn to the lush green canopy that bordered the elven territory.
"Reinforce," Fate called out softly, concern evident in her voice. "Are you alright?"
The older woman turned towards Fate, offering a tight smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Yes, of course," She replied, her tone betraying a hint of unease. "I am just... concerned about our path."
"Is it because we're close to the Elven lands?" Fate asked, gently prodding for more information. She knew there must be something deeper bothering Reinforce, but she wanted to respect her privacy.
Reinforce hesitated for a moment before relenting. "Yes," She admitted quietly. "It has been a long time since I was last here, and my memories of this place are... complicated."
Fate could sense Reinforce's reluctance to delve deeper into her past, so she offered a supportive nod. "I understand," She said. "But know that we're all here for you, no matter what happens."
"Thank you, Fate." Reinforce smiled, this time with more sincerity.
Nanoha's stretcher swayed gently with each step as Suzuka and Arisa carried her, trying their best not to jostle her. Fate stayed close, her fingers brushing Nanoha's hand occasionally, drawing strength from the warmth of her skin.
"Let's make a wide arc around this area," Hayate suggested. "It'll take us closer to the Elven lands, but it might help us avoid any army encampments."
"Are you sure about that?" Alicia asked, concern etched on her face. "I would like to steer clear of the Elves if possible."
Hayate glanced at Reinforce, who kept her eyes trained on the ground. "We don't have much choice. We need to reach the city as soon as possible."
They adjusted their course, veering closer to the edge of the Elven lands. The lush greenery of the forest loomed like a silent sentinel, its mysterious depths beckoning them with both beauty and danger.
"Hey, look!" Vita exclaimed suddenly, pointing to a nearby tree. "Is that...?"
"Elven sentinels," Reinforce confirmed, her voice barely above a whisper. "We must have come too close to their border."
As if on cue, lithe figures emerged from the shadows of the trees, surrounding the group with a silent, deadly grace. Their eyes were sharp, their expressions unreadable as they assessed the intruders.
"State your purpose," One of the sentinels demanded, her voice cool and authoritative.
"We mean no harm," Hayate replied, stepping forward. "We are simply passing through on our way to the city. Our friend is injured and needs medical attention."
"Your presence here is not welcome," Another sentinel stated, his gaze lingering on Reinforce for a moment longer than necessary.
Fate clenched her fists, feeling a surge of protectiveness for her friends. "Please, we only want safe passage. We'll be gone as soon as we can."
The lead sentinel seemed to consider their words for a moment before nodding slowly. "Very well. But know that you are being watched. Do not stray from your path or attempt to enter our lands."
"Thank you," Hayate said sincerely, relief washing over her face.
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting shadows across the forest floor as the group made a lite camp at the edge of the Elven lands. Fate glanced over at Reinforce, who had remained uncharacteristically quiet since their encounter with the sentinels. She could sense her unease but decided to respect her privacy for now.
"Set up the tents here," Hayate instructed, pointing to a relatively flat area near a small stream. "We should also set up some defensive spells around the perimeter, just in case."
"Right," Reinforce nodded, beginning to weave intricate spell circles in the air. The other members of the group busied themselves with various tasks, the tension in the air palpable.
"Hey, Fate," Arisa called out, beckoning her over. "Can you help me with this tent? I can't seem to get it right."
"Of course," Fate replied, making her way over and assisting Arisa with the tent's framework. As they worked together, Fate couldn't help but steal glances at Nanoha, who lay nearby on a makeshift bed, her chest rising and falling in a peaceful rhythm. The sight of her sleeping so soundly warmed Fate's heart, yet it also filled her with anxiety.
"Everything alright?" Suzuka asked gently, noticing Fate's worried expression.
"I'm fine," Fate insisted, though her eyes betrayed her inner turmoil. "I just... I'm worried about Nanoha."
"Give it time," Suzuka reassured her. "She'll be back on her feet soon enough. And then you can tell her how you feel."
Fate sighed, knowing Suzuka was right. Making her way over to Nanoha and taking care of her needs.
Suzuka pulled Arisa to the side after the tent was set up, "You didn't need help setting up that tent did you?"
"No, I just wanted to give her something to do and try to get her mind off of Nanoha. At least for a few minutes anyways." Arisa said.
"I love you so much," Suzuka said, then kissed Arisa.
Arisa in turn deep into the kiss. "How are you doing? Do you need to drink?" Arisa asked.
"No, I should be good until we get to the city," Suzuka replied.
Darkness enveloped the camp, and the group settled in for the night, taking turns on watch duty. Fate volunteered for the first shift, unable to sleep with her thoughts consumed by Nanoha and the uncertainty of their journey.
She sat near the edge of the camp, scanning the tree line for any signs of movement. The wind rustled through the leaves, sending a shiver down her spine. She couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, but she had no way of knowing if it was the Elves or something more sinister lurking in the shadows.
"Are you sure you don't want someone else to take the first watch?" Alicia asked softly, joining Fate as she kept vigil.
"I'm fine," Fate murmured, though she appreciated her sister's concern. "I just need some time alone with my thoughts."
Alicia nodded, understanding the unspoken request for space. "Just remember," She whispered before departing, "You deserve love as much as anyone else does, clone or not."
Fate closed her eyes, taking a deep breath as Alicia's words echoed in her mind. Perhaps Nanoha would be the one to convince her of that truth. But for now, all she could do was protect her and hope that their journey led them to safety. And maybe, just maybe, it would lead her to the courage she needed to confess her heart's deepest desire.
Alicia took over the watch halfway through the night so that Fate could get some sleep. Fate moved over to Nanoha's bed and lay down Fate took Nanoha's hand in her own and fell asleep.
Once everyone was awake and moving around camp getting ready to head out, they got an unexpected visitor. The leader of the Elves had arrived, his piercing gaze fixed on Reinforce.
"Reinforce," He said, his voice cold and authoritative. "We need to talk."
Reinforce nodded, stepping forward to meet him. Fate watched as the two engaged in a tense conversation, their words too quiet for her to hear. Though she couldn't make out what was being said, the Elf leader's body language spoke volumes. His narrowed eyes and stiff posture showed his disdain for Reinforce, and it was clear that he held little respect for her.
"Hey," Hayate called out, her voice firm as she stood up and walked over to them. "Is there a problem?"
"Stay out of this," The Elf leader warned, glaring at her. "This does not concern you."
"Actually, it does," Hayate retorted, positioning herself between Reinforce and the Elf leader. "Reinforce is one of my Knights, and I won't stand by while you speak to her like that."
Fate watched with admiration as Hayate defended Reinforce, her determination evident in every word. She knew that Hayate was a natural leader, but seeing her in action only served to reinforce that belief.
"Very well," The Elf leader said, his voice dripping with disdain. He looked Hayate up and down before adding, "But remember, human, that you are guests in our lands. Do not forget your place."
"Of course," Hayate replied, her tone polite but firm. "And we appreciate your hospitality."
As the Elf leader turned and disappeared into the forest, Reinforce offered Hayate a grateful smile. "Thank you, Master," She murmured.
"Always," Hayate responded, placing a comforting hand on Reinforce's shoulder. "Now, let's get back to camp. We have a long day ahead of us."
They finished packing when Hayate picked up the Tome of the Night Sky.
"Wait," The Elf leader suddenly hissed, his gaze fixed on Hayate. He pointed a long, slender finger at the tome resting by her side. "What is that you carry? The Book of Darkness?"
Fate could see the muscles in Hayate's jaw tense, but she maintained her composure. "It was once known as the Book of Darkness," Hayate began patiently, "But it has changed, just as I have. It is now called the Tome of the Night Sky, and I am its Master."
"Ah, so you claim," The Elf leader said skeptically, narrowing his eyes. "We will see if you are or not in time."
The Knights, sensing the tension between Hayate and the Elf leader, moved to stand protectively in front of their Master. Their resolve was evident in their stances, each one prepared to defend Hayate at a moment's notice.
"Your doubt is misplaced," Signum said firmly, her eyes locked on the elf leader. "Hayate Yagami is not only our Master but also a person with a kind heart."
"Indeed," Shamal added, her usually gentle voice taking on an unyielding tone. "We will not allow anyone to belittle her or question her worthiness."
This surprises the Elf leader and makes him step back.
"Of course," Hayate replied, inclining her head slightly. Her tone remained calm and respectful, refusing to rise to the challenge presented by the elf leader's doubt. "I have nothing to hide."
The Elf leader's eyes widened in surprise at the united front before him. He hesitated for a moment, seemingly taken aback by their display of solidarity. It was clear he hadn't expected such defiance from outsiders.
"Very well," He said finally, his voice cold and distant. "Perhaps I have misjudged you. But remember this: our lands are not to be trifled with, and any further intrusion will not be tolerated." With that, he turned on his heel and strode away, his sentinels following closely behind.
As the tension in the air gradually dissipated, Fate marveled at Hayate's ability to maintain her composure under pressure. She knew that Hayate's strength came not only from her magical powers but also from her unwavering dedication to those she cared about.
Turning to her Knights "Thank you," Hayate murmured, her eyes shining with gratitude as she looked at her knights. "I couldn't have done it without you."
"Of course, Hayate," Vita replied, grinning widely. "We're always here for you."
"Besides," Reinforce chimed in softly, "You've proven time and time again just how strong and deserving you are. We know the truth, and that's what matters most."
On the move again the group wanted to get away from the Elven lands as fast as possible but also wanted to be away from the armies in the area. Shamal and Hayate took up carrying Nanoha on the last leg of the journey to the city. Fate took her place walking besides Nanoha.
"Hey, Nanoha," She murmured, brushing a strand of hair away from the girl's forehead. "We're going to keep moving, okay? Just rest, and we'll take care of everything."
Nanoha's eyes fluttered open for a moment, meeting Fate's gaze. There was a flicker of understanding in those deep blue orbs before they closed once more, leaving Fate with a mixture of relief and longing. She wanted so desperately to share her feelings with Nanoha, but the time never seemed right.
"Hey, Fate," Arisa called, snapping her out of her thoughts. "You okay? You seem a bit distracted."
Fate forced a smile, trying to shake off her worries. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just... thinking about things."
With renewed determination, Fate focused on the journey ahead, knowing that when the time came for her confession, she would face it head-on, just like Hayate had with the Elf leader. And perhaps, in doing so, she would find not only acceptance but the love she longed for.
