Chapter Fourteen
Nanoha slowly came to consciousness, she could feel a warm glow against her closed eyelids. Her eyes fluttered open, revealing an unfamiliar ceiling. A slight wave of distortion was quickly replaced by an overwhelming sense of relief as she felt a reassuring warmth encasing her hand. Confusion and curiosity warred within her, urging her to explore her surroundings.
As she lies there, her senses gradually awakening, she becomes aware of the distant hum of conversation and the faint scent of animals. The gentle rhythm of her breathing seemed almost in sync with someone nearby. She could feel that she was on a mattress and that soft fabric-like sheets were against her skin.
Questions suddenly filled her mind. What happened after she had been hurt? What happened to Fate? How had she gotten here? and lastly, where were her friends and are they all right?
Despite her worry, Nanoha couldn't shake the feeling that she was safe, protected even. The warmth that enveloped her hand seemed to say that she was not alone, calming her fears and filling her with a sense of peace and reassurance. As her thoughts continued to swirl she couldn't help but focus on that comforting sensation.
Summoning her strength, Nanoha slowly turned her head, taking in her surroundings. The room was dimly lit, the shadows casting a soothing ambiance over the occupants. She could see her friends nestled in their little corners, their forms relaxed and peaceful in sleep. The sight brought a small smile to her lips, a mixture of relief and gratitude washing over her.
Although she was still unsure of the events that led to this moment, she knew one thing for certain, she wasn't alone. She was surrounded by those she cared for.
To her, that was all that mattered, that they were all safe. Nanoha found comfort in that thought. As she lay there, her hand was still enveloped in that reassuring warmth.
She gently turned her head, and Nanoha's eyes fell upon Fate, who was seated on the floor beside her bed. The muted glow of the room illuminated her delicate features, casting a halo of light around her golden hair. Fate's face was a picture of serenity in sleep, lips slightly parted as soft breaths escaped them. Lips that she longed to kiss. It was that same peaceful vestige that she had often watched when she took the night watch.
Fate's hand was wrapped around Nanoha's in a protective cocoon, promising safety and comfort. The warmth of Fate's touch seeped into Nanoha's very being, filling her with a sense of peace and belonging she hadn't realized she had been craving. In that simple gesture, there was an unspoken understanding.
As Nanoha drank in the sight before her, a deep, unspoken emotion stirred within her chest, blossoming like a flower in the first light of day. A warmth that she had never felt before coming to this world, a swelling within her chest.
A feeling called love.
Nanoha had been falling in love with Fate from the first time their eyes met when the Goddess had called them. Each day she spent side by side with her new friend, that love just continued to grow until now, it is in full bloom, as love.
As she continued to gaze at the beautiful sleeping face before her, slowly the light shifted to reveal the faint shadows beneath the eyes, the slight furrow of her brow even in her slumber. The slight hollowing of her cheeks, even to the back of her hand was thinner than it was. It was clear that the weight of recent events had taken its toll, and Nanoha couldn't help feeling a ping of guilt for the worry she had caused her friend and secret love.
Nanoha's gaze drifted away from the peaceful expression on Fate's face, her curiosity leading her eyes to explore the rest of the room. In the dimly lit corner, she found Arisa and Suzuka nestled together in a tender embrace. Arisa was nestled into the corner with Suzuka lying on top of her front with Arisa's arms wrapped around Suzuka.
A soft sound drew her attention to the opposite side of the room, where Alicia and Vita sat with quiet, vigilant grace. Alicia's long, flowing hair cascaded over her shoulder as she slept on Vita, her head resting on the other woman's lap. There was a sense of serenity that emanated from them as if their very presence served as a shield against any harm that dared approach. Vita's hand rested gently on Alicia's side.
The room remained still, the only sound the gentle rustle of fabric as Nanoha shifted closer to her slumbering companion, the love of her life, and dozing off.
Waking from her light sleep, Nanoha heard a voice, "Have you told her yet?"
The quiet yet inquisitive voice cut through the stillness like a knife, shattering the fragile quality of the room. The words seem to come from nowhere and everywhere at once, leaving her momentarily disoriented.
Her gaze shifted around the room, lingering briefly on Arisa and Suzuka, who remained nestled together in the corner. Alicia and Vita are silent sentinels on the opposite side. Yet none of them appeared to have spoken, their expressions undisturbed by the sudden intrusion.
As the initial shock subsided, Nanoha found herself grappling with the question that had been voiced. She struggled to recall if she had ever told Fate about the depth of her feelings, the memories of her attack still fragmented and hazy. Her heart clenched with uncertainty and pain, the weight of her unspoken emotions threatening to crush her.
"Have you told her yet?" The voice repeated, its gentle insistence urging her to confront the truth she had been avoiding.
Nanoha hesitated, torn between the desire to confess her love and the fear of what Fate's reaction might be. Her mind raced with thoughts as she weighed her options, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew that keeping her secret would only cause more pain in the long run, but the prospect of rejection loomed large, casting a dark shadow over her hopes.
"Have I... told her?" Nanoha whispered, her voice barely audible as she grappled with the enormity of her decision. "I don't remember if I did after I was attacked or not."
"Then perhaps," The voice suggested gently, "Saying something to her soon would be a good idea."
Nanoha's voice trembled, "I don't know if I can… What if she doesn't feel the same way?"
"Sometimes in life, we have to take risks," The voice replied gently. "You've faced so many challenges together, and your friendship has only grown stronger. Trust in that connection, Nanoha."
Looking around the room for the voice, Nanoha's heart skipped a beat as her eyes fell on Yuuno at the foot of her bed. His usually bright and inquisitive eyes now held a depth of concern and relief.
"You found us," Nanoha breathed out, her voice a mix of gratitude and astonishment.
Yuuno nodded, "I did," He confirmed. "It wasn't easy, but I knew I had to find you."
With her heart pounding, Nanoha took a deep breath. He was right; she had already been through so much with Fate, and they had both grown as individuals. It was time for her to be honest about her feelings.
"From what I have been told she has not left your side," Yuuno said.
Nanoha's chest swelled with emotion at the revelation, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. The knowledge that Fate had remained by her side, steadfast and loyal as always, only served to strengthen the friendship they shared. The thought of losing such a precious person terrified her, yet it also fueled her determination to be honest with her feelings.
"Thank you," She whispered, her gaze never leaving Fate's peaceful face. "For telling me."
"Perhaps," Yuuno suggested gently, "You should focus on the present. You will have an opportunity to share your feelings with Fate in time."
"You're right… I need to tell her." She whispered, her gaze returning to Fate's serene face.
With a slow exhale, Nanoha closed her eyes, trying to piece together the hazy fragments of her recollections. She could remember the fear, the confusion, and the desperate need to tell Fate that she loved her. But the exact words she had spoken – or even if she had managed to speak at all – escaped her grasp.
In the stillness, Fate shifted beside her, instinctively tightening her grip on Nanoha's hand. The simple gesture sent warmth flooding through Nanoha, driving away the chill of her doubts.
Nanoha's heart raced at the thought, but she knew he was right. Turning her eyes to Fate, taking in every detail of her beloved friend's face. In that instant, she saw not only the fierce warrior who had fought by her side but also the vulnerable, tender-hearted girl who had captured her heart.
Yuuno offered her a small, knowing smile before slipping away into the room's shadows, giving Nanoha the space she needed.
"Alright," Nanoha murmured to herself, stealing her resolve. "I can do this."
With a deep breath, she squeezed Fate's hand once more, a silent promise to face whatever future lay ahead of them, together.
"Nanoha…"
The sleepy murmur barely punctured the silence, yet it was enough to draw Nanoha's attention. Nanoha, whose eyes had been focused on her and Fate's hands, turned her head to pinpoint the source of the sound. It was Arisa who had spoken, her voice a mere whisper as she snuggled closer to Suzuka.
Nanoha's heart clenched as she glanced back at Fate, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts and feelings. I can't hide this anymore, not from her… not from myself, she thought urgently, before shifting her gaze once more to survey the room.
Arisa, still half-asleep, buried her face in Suzuka's hair, her fiery spirit soothed by the gentle warmth of her lover, their connection was undeniable.
"Right…" She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. As her heart hammered in her chest, she turned once more to Fate, determined to finally bare her soul.
"Na…no…ha," A murmur said again, this time louder, and closer to her. With renewed determination, Nanoha squeezed Fate's hand, her voice trembling but resolute as she whispered,
"Yes, Fate… "
At the sound of the murmur, Fate's eyes snapped open, revealing a mixture of surprise and joy. Her sudden movement was a stark contrast to the quiet of the room as if her spirit had been rekindled by Nanoha's presence.
"Nanoha, you're awake!" She exclaimed, her voice filled with relief and happiness.
Nanoha blinked at her friend, still disoriented from her slumber and thoughts. "Fate," She murmured, her heart swelling with emotion. A small, genuine smile graced her lips as their hands remained connected.
As her words reverberated off the walls, they stirred the other occupants into action. Arisa and Suzuka roused from their slumber and blinked sleepily before realization dawned upon them. Eyes widening in excitement, they exchanged glances before scrambling to their feet, eager to witness this long-awaited moment.
"Thank goodness," Fate whispered, her fierce devotion shining through every word. "I was so worried when you wouldn't wake up."
"Thank you for staying with me," Nanoha replied.
"Of course," Fate said softly, her eyes never leaving Nanoha's face. "I'll always be here for you, no matter what."
"Is it true?" Arisa breathed, her voice trembling with anticipation. Sharing an excited look with Suzuka, they rushed to Nanoha's bedside, their eagerness palpable.
Alicia and Vita, ever the vigilant guardians, stirred from their watchful sleeping postures. Their eyes met for a brief moment, sharing a mutual understanding as their lips curved into faint smiles. Vita went to tell the others of Nanoha's waking up.
"Everyone..." Nanoha whispered, her voice thin but filled with gratitude. Her gaze traveled from one face to another, taking in the love and concern that radiated from each of them. As she did so, she felt her heart swell with emotion, buoyed by the unspoken bond that connected them all.
"We've been waiting for you, Nanoha," Suzuka murmured, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "You have no idea how worried we were."
"Hey, don't start crying now," Arisa chided gently, her voice thick with emotion. "We should all be celebrating!"
"Indeed." Hayate, who had been quietly observing from a distance, stepped forward, smiling.
Everyone piled into the room expressing how happy they were that Nanoha was awake. She tried expressing her gratitude for their well wishes but was starting to feel claustrophobic with so many people in the small room.
Arisa, Suzuka, and Fate could see the stress so many people were causing Nanoha. Arisa took charge and shooed everybody out, "Okay everyone, this isn't any show she needs rest. Suzuka, why don't you go down and see if they have anything easy like broth or gruel, maybe even some porridge."
"Right, I'll go down and check with the kitchen to see what they can come up with," Suzuka said.
Everyone but Fate had been shooed out of the room by Arisa. When Arisa looked back at Fate she gave her a wink and closed the door behind herself.
Fate smiled gratefully even though Arisa didn't see it. Fate helped Nanoha get into a sitting position in bed. Then turning to the bedside table Fate grabbed the water pitcher and a cup and poured a cool cup of water for Nanoha. Nanoha tried to take it but didn't have the strength to hold the cup.
"Here, I'll hold it for you," Fate said.
Blushing, "Thank you."
"Anytime Nanoha," Fate replied, happiness showing in her eyes.
Nanoha took small sips of water and when she had her fill moved her head back. Fate put the cup down and sat in the chair she had been in since they got to the room. The silence was defining when there was a knock on the door making Fate jump a bit.
Fate got up and opened it to see Suzuka with a tray of food and a pot of tea. Stepping back to let Suzuka into the room and started to leave but was stopped.
"Where are you going Fate?" Suzuka asked. "You need to help Nanoha with eating."
"Oh, I thought you were going to do that," Fate said.
Shaking her head no, "No, that's your job today." Suzuka said, giving Fate a wink that Nanoha couldn't see.
Blushing Fate stammers, "O… okay." Going back to the chair that she had just been occupying.
"I had to help the cook on how to make the rice porridge," Suzuka said, as she put the tray down on the small table next to the bed. "He said he only knew how to make gruel, and frankly it just sounded disgusting. Not like how it is made back on Earth."
"Thank you, Suzuka," Nanoha said, "It looks good."
"My pleasure Nanoha," Suzuka said, walking out the door.
Nanoha looked back at Fate, "I can feed myself if you want to go get something to eat."
Nanoha reached for the bowl and spoon only to have it scooped up by Fate. Who started stirring the porridge to get it to cool down faster so that Nanoha wouldn't burn her mouth.
"Nanoha, you haven't eaten in weeks, we need to build up your strength again," Fate said.
"Weeks?" Nanoha asked.
Fate stopped what she was doing and looked at Nanoha, "Yes, you have been out for a few weeks."
There was a pregnant pause as Nanoha tried to digest this information. "What happened to me that night, Fate?" Nanoha asked her.
Fate explained everything that had happened to Nanoha and the group up to that day, omitting the confessions that they both had made. As she was explaining she slowly spoon-fed Nanoha the porridge. "When you started taking a turn for the worst we didn't know what to do. Shamal and Suzuka tried everything they could think of. They even asked some of the local healers to come in and see if they could figure out what was wrong. However, they had no idea why you wouldn't wake up or what was causing you to get worse."
"So what happened? What caused me to start getting better?" Nanoha asked.
"Yuuno, he found us and said that there was something wrong with you. He said that you had poison in your system from the attack. He told me that it was a slow-activating poison that was not easily detected. He was able to remove it from your system and you've been slowly getting better until today when you woke up." Fate said.
Trying to absorb all of the information that Fate has given her, Nanoha starts feeling overwhelmed and sleepy. The feeling of being excess weight to the group was pressing down on her. This was the same feeling she had gotten when she was around her family when she was always the third wheel. Sometimes she would even feel this way around Arisa and Suzuka but mostly just her family.
Since coming to this world Nanoha hadn't had this feeling, they all worked together as a group. However, that dynamic changed and she was now becoming a burden, the third wheel that she hated being.
"I have to find a way of making it up to everyone and to start pulling my weight again." Nanoha thought. "Once I'm back on my feet I need to push myself into better fighting performance, both physically and magically."
"Once you're all healed, then we can start that training like we did back in the lost city. We'll start slow and get you built back up so that you are at the performance level that you were before your injury. But we need to do this slowly so we don't overtax your body with too much training while it's still recovering." Fate said.
"How did you know what I was thinking?" Nanoha asked.
"It's what I would be thinking, so I was sure you would too," Fate replied. "The feeling of being a burden to others is not pleasant. I know I've been down that road and from time to time still struggle with it."
The love Nanoha felt for Fate filled her chest with a warm feeling. "Thank you, Fate," Nanoha said. "I never want to lose these feelings that I have for her." Nanoha thought.
