Chapter Fifteen

Nanoha stirred, her eyes fluttering open as she slowly awoke from her slumber. Only to find Fate, Arisa, and Suzuka waiting for her to wake up. The relief she saw on their faces made her think they were afraid that yesterday was a dream.

"Good morning," Nanoha said, "I'm going to need help getting to the bathroom."

Arisa and Suzuka said they had something to do and left the room leaving Fate behind to help Nanoha to the bathroom. Fate got Nanoha out of bed and carried her to the bathroom. Fate looked everywhere but at Nanoha, as she took care of her business. Nanoha not knowing where to look with Fate's crotch in her face, both of them blushing the entire time.

"Okay, I'm done Fate," Nanoha said.

"Right, let me lift you up then," Fate replied.

Scooping Nanoha up they made their way back to the room. When Fate and Nanoha returned to the room a tray laden with food was set on the table next to the bed. As Nanoha was strong enough to be able to feed herself they both enjoyed their breakfast together.

"So, what is our next move?" Nanoha asked.

"Not sure yet. We need to have a meeting on that soon." Fate said. "Our main focus after you were hurt was getting you somewhere so that you could recover. Now that you are recovering, we need to figure out what our next move is going to be."

That afternoon everyone was in Nanoha's room. The room was abuzz with excitement over her recovery. Nanoha could now stand and take a few steps to the door of the room. Suzuka and Shamal said Nanoha should be able to walk a little bit more every day. But will still need to be supervised to make sure that she doesn't fall.

Alicia volunteered Fate for that job, "Fate would be happy to help with that." She said with a cheeky smile.

"Yes, I can help Nanoha when she needs it," Fate said.

Everyone started talking at once and over each other. No one saw Yuuno come in the window and try to get everyone's attention. Every time the volume died down he tried to get their attention again, but then a new conversation would bring the voice level back up again.

"Everyone, please," Yuuno tried, but his voice was barely audible over the din. "I have something important to say." But despite his efforts, his plea went unheard and was lost amidst the swirling tide of conversations.

Hayate saw that Yuuno was trying to get everyone's attention. "Please…" Yuuno said once more, his voice strained from the effort he was making. But as before, his message remained unheard.

With a quick intake of breath, Hayate pursed her lips and released a sharp, piercing whistle that sliced through the air like a blade. Immediately, the room fell silent, the abrupt cessation of noise drawing startled looks from everyone present.

Hayate held up a hand for attention, her gaze fixed on Yuuno. She could see the gratitude in his eyes, the relief that he would finally be able to deliver his important message.

"Yuuno has been trying to say something," Hayate announced, her voice strong yet respectful. "Let's hear him out."

"Thank you, Hayate," Yuuno began, his voice carrying a weight of responsibility and a hint of resignation. "It is time that I send you all out to your next mentor..."

The room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. Everyone was fixated on what Yuuno was trying to tell them.

"Okay, please continue Yuuno," Fate said.

"Before the attack, I was trying to decide if you were ready to move on to your next mentor. Now that you have gone through everything after the attack, I am sure you are ready for your next step."

The air in the room seemed to grow heavier as if burdened by the weight of Yuuno's words. Nanoha's eyes widened slightly, Fate started to fidget next to her. The others started to mumble to each other about what Yuuno just told them.

"Yuuno..." Hayate began hesitantly. "Are you certain about this? We trust your judgment, but we've come so far together. It's difficult to think of moving forward without you."

Yuuno momentarily closed his eyes, struggling to suppress the twinge of pain in his heart. He knew the path he suggested was fraught with challenges, but it was necessary for their growth and survival. They needed to become stronger, and more resilient, and he had to make them understand why.

"Believe me, I don't want us to part ways either," Yuuno confessed, meeting Hayate's gaze with equal parts determination and sorrow. "But there are things beyond my knowledge, techniques, and strategies that I cannot teach. If you are to survive the battles ahead, you must learn from those who have more experience than I."

The girls exchanged glances, their minds racing with questions and fears, but ultimately knowing that Yuuno's words held truth. Murmurs filled the room, echoing the conflict within each person. Their voices grew louder, overwhelming the space and drowning out any chance for coherent conversation.

Again a sharp, piercing whistle cut through the chaos. Every pair of eyes snapped toward the source, finding Hayate standing tall and resolute.

"Everyone, please!" She implored, her gaze sweeping across the room. "I know this is difficult, but we must listen to what Yuuno has to say. He has always had our best interests at heart."

"Alright," Nanoha said, her voice strong despite how weak she felt. "We'll do it. We'll seek out these mentors and learn everything we can."

"Thank you," Yuuno said softly, gratitude shining in his eyes as he looked over the group. "I truly believe this is the best course of action for all of you."

The tension in the room was palpable as Yuuno gathered his thoughts, preparing to deliver the crux of his warning. Yuuno began, his voice steady and measured despite the gravity of the situation. "It would seem that Jail has sent out one of his most deadly numbers, Due..."

As the words left Yuuno's lips, a chill ran down the spines of everyone present. "Due is known for her mercilessness and cunning. She employs slow-acting poisons to incapacitate her targets, prolonging their suffering and savoring every moment of it." Yuuno paused.

"Unfortunately," Yuuno said, taking a deep breath before continuing, "She has already claimed several victims on Jail's orders. We cannot underestimate her, nor can we afford to let our guard down."

Nanoha's heart raced, her mind swirling with concern for her friends and loved ones. She glanced over at Fate, who seemed to be battling the same emotions, her brow furrowed in worry. A heavy silence fell over the room as each person absorbed the knowledge of their formidable foe.

"Then what should we do?" Alicia asked.

"First and foremost, we must be vigilant," Yuuno replied with determination. "This assassin is known for her stealth and cunning, so we must take every precaution to protect ourselves and one another. We will need to train harder and smarter, and that includes seeking out the mentors I mentioned earlier."

"Yuuno's right," Hayate interjected, her expression hardened by resolve. "We cannot let fear paralyze us. The more we learn, the stronger we get and the faster we can end this."

"Alright," Arisa said, her voice resolute. "We'll do everything we can to prepare for what lies ahead. If that means we need to go to another mentor or 10 mentors then that's what we'll do."

"Yuuno, can you show Suzuka and me what you did to remove the poison from Nanoha?" Shamal asked. With the knowledge that a deadly assassin was on their trail, and the threat of Due's slow-acting poison loomed like an ever-present shadow.

"Yes, I will be happy to show you both," Yuuno said.

"Let's head out tomorrow," Hayate suggested, her voice carrying an air of authority. "The sooner we begin, the better prepared we'll be when Due strikes." With that, the group dispersed.

Signum and Arisa went looking for a wagon so that Nanoha could travel comfortably and they could gather more supplies for a longer trip.

Hayate and Reinforce went in search of supplies.

Vita gathered all of their weapons and went to the blacksmith to work on them.

Yuuno took Shamal and Suzuka and instructed them on how to remove the poison.

Everyone else who was not bedridden went with Alicia to the training grounds.

Fate was instructed to stay with Nanoha. They talked a little bit about their home worlds, but not what they should have been talking about.

Unbeknownst to them all, Sein's finger silently emerged from the floor, as thin and nearly invisible as a thread. It slithered among the legs of furniture and people alike, its presence undetected as it listened to the group's every word. As Yuuno concluded his warning, the finger absorbed the final pieces of intelligence before retreating into the shadows, leaving no trace behind.

Within the cold, dark confines of Jail's lair, the atmosphere was one of fury and frustration. The stone walls seemed to tremble under the weight of Jail's wrath as he paced back and forth, his heavy footsteps echoing through the chamber.

"Useless! Absolutely useless!" Jail roared, his voice bouncing off the walls like a thunderclap. "How could they fail so miserably?!"

His fists clenched at his sides, knuckles whitening with the force of his anger. Even the air around him seemed to be charged with tension, as if it too were quivering with fear. As he paced, his mind raced with thoughts of vengeance and retribution, seeking some means by which to reclaim what had been lost.

"Those insolent girls, thinking they can stand against me," He seethed, his eyes narrowed into slits. "I will make them pay for their arrogance."

He paused in his pacing, his gaze settling on a table laden with weapons and arcane artifacts. With a snarl, he swept his arm out, sending the tabletop contents crashing to the ground in a cacophony of metal and shattered glass.

"Master," A voice whispered hesitantly from the shadows, "Perhaps we should consider a different approach?"

Jail whirled around, his eyes blazing with fury as they locked onto the speaker. Sein emerged cautiously from her hiding spot, her body tense and ready to flee should her master's anger be directed at her.

"Speak," Jail commanded, his voice cold and unforgiving.

"Perhaps we underestimated them," Sein offered, swallowing hard under his piercing gaze. "We could focus on gathering more information, finding their weaknesses, and striking when they least expect it."

The room fell silent as Jail considered her words, his rage momentarily held in check. It was true that their previous efforts had been met with failure, and the girls had proven more resourceful than anticipated. Perhaps it was time for a change in tactics.

"Very well," Jail finally said, his voice low and dangerous. "We will regroup and observe. But mark my words, Sein - they will not escape me for long."

Sein bowed her head, relief flooding through her at having appeased her master's wrath, if only temporarily. "Yes, Master," She replied, her voice barely a whisper.

As the dark storm of anger continued to brew within Jail, a new sense of purpose began to take root. They would bide their time, watching and waiting until the perfect moment to strike. The girls may have evaded them thus far, but Jail knew that even the strongest bonds could be broken with the right pressure. And when that time came, he would be ready to exact his revenge.

After all, he still has his newest little project which is almost ready. And when it is then he can finally look for the city from the skies. This brings a smile to his face, which slowly fades away when he sees Due.

Due stood there, her back ramrod straight and her eyes fixed on the ground before her. Her posture was that of a soldier at attention, but beneath the surface, she was anything but composed. Inside, her thoughts raced – a whirlwind of frustration, humiliation, and determination.

"What do you have to say for yourself, Due?" Jail asks, his eyes piercing.

"Failure is unacceptable," She said, clenching her fists tightly by her sides. "I will not let this happen again."

Defeat is a bitter pill to swallow, especially considering her past successes and reputation as one of Jail's most skilled assassins. "Next time will be different," She vowed silently, her eyes narrowing with fierce resolve. "I will not let my master down again."

"Due!" Jail barked suddenly, his harsh tone snapping her out of her thoughts. "You've been far too careless in your approach. I expect more from my Numbers."

"Understood, Master," Due replied, her voice steady despite the trembling anger roiling within her. She would learn from her mistakes, adapt, and grow stronger. That was the only way to regain her master's trust and ensure her ultimate success.

"Good," Jail said, his voice dripping with disdain. "Now get out of my sight. I have much to ponder."

"Very well, Master," Due responded, bowing her head before turning on her heel and marching out of the chamber.

"Next time," She thought with grim determination, "I will not fail. I will bring them to their knees and prove myself worthy in the eyes of my master."

With that unyielding vow echoing through her mind, Due strode purposefully down the dark corridors of Jail's lair. Her path was set, her objective clear – redemption lay ahead, one way or another.

That night Yuuno had a map showing Signum and Hayate where the first mentor could be found. "You will find him at the top of a mountain in an ancient temple. To get to the temple you will need to climb the stairs to the top of the mountain by foot. It would be a good idea to make sure that Nanoha can do so by the time you get there. It has been known to take days to get to the top."

"What will we do with the oxen and the wagon while we're there?" Signum asked.

"There is a shelter at the bottom of the mountain near the stairs where you can store it and the animals can go into the barn that is right there. Some servants will be able to take care of everything while you're gone." Yuuno said.

"Are you coming with us Yuuno?" Hayate asked.

"No I can't do that, we'll meet back up once you are done with your training," Yuuno said.

The next morning Yuuno saw them off not knowing if they were going to survive the trials and the training. Although, the training he was sure they wouldn't have any trouble with and would be able to survive it. However, the trials were what scared him the most as they could make or break them.
