Peace had befallen the Cormac residence. The father and daughter lived together in harmony. Within the last few weeks, no arguments had broken out between the two. Catherine found it inviting, even though she hid an alternative motive. She understood the risks of keeping such an immense secret from her dad.
The teenage girl was attempting to do some digging herself. She didn't hold out hope at the possibility that her mother would be alive. Catherine knew that Dr. White had a strong reputation in the Boston community. Why would he make such a repulsive lie in the sake of trying to making the girl feel better?
She had to investigate Dr. White's story by going straight to the source. Samuel Adams. Under the cloak of darkness in the early hours of the morning.
Clothed in her assassin coat with her red scarf gently tucked in the front. Catherine knew that the eyes of the Templars were scattered across the city. No one would trust the young woman to roam Boston alone for the fact Shay did not condone her attack on Charles Lee. Catherine felt a keen sting from Shay's distrust, but she was about to give him a reason to lose faith in her.
She wanted to be back before daybreak. She'd know she'd be disturbing Adams, but she'd had to take a chance. Catherine took an extra deep breath before flashing on her special vision. She could see her father in a light blue shade resting in his marriage bed.
When the cost was clear, she Pushed the window open, she climbed out of her window. Catherine took no time in climbing down from her window. She jumped to land firmly on the cobbled streets. With one swoop of her hood, Catherine became a hooded figure under the dark sky.
Catherine crept through the fog that rolled in from the bay. She used her scarf to block out the coldness to her face. The streets were still lite by street lamps. Catherine could hear a stray dog bark echo from the distance. The young teenager stuck to the shadows to avoid British patrols. There was a force crew-few in effect and she didn't want to be held up by muskets. No one followed her, or so she thought. She felt on edge like her senses were on fire. The assassin in training checked her surroundings for a warrant of concern. Nothing was there.
Relief was in sight when she stood upon Winter street. It took her longer to get to her destination, but with her injuries, she couldn't risk using the roof access.
Catherine hurried down the street to find the Adams home. She had never been to his home before. She had resourced to using her eagle vision to find the politician. His house glow gold when it was in sight.
She rushed to Samuel Adams front door and knocked quickly, "Mister Adams?" Catherine called out.
She paused for the moment "Mister Adams?" Catherine called out.
She knocked again waiting for an answer. It felt like an entirety for the door to open. Behind the door, she heard thuds that sounded like footsteps. The door swung open with great annoyance. Samuel Adams was not expecting the younger Cormac to be standing before him at such an early hour.
"Miss Cormac?" Samuel blinked. He was using a candle to illuminate the snow-covered streets.
"Is everything okay? Do you require my assistance?" He was half dressed in his coat unbutton and his hair loose. He looked like he had just awakened himself to get an early head start of the day. "You just caught me. I am on my way out of Boston to visit my cousin John and his family."
"I am sorry for the disturbance at an early hour, but I am here to inquire about my mother." Catherine crossed her arms looking unsure. "Is she alive?" She pleaded with her dark honey eyes. Her heart was ready to burst from just waiting for an answer.
Adams paled from the line of questioning. He acted skittish as he glanced around the street to see if anyone was watching. "Come in, quickly girl. You shouldn't be asking such questions at this hour."
Catherine followed him into the house pulling her scarf and hood down. "I don't have much time. I have an hour at most before I need to be back."
Adams shut the door behind her. He secured the bolt on the door before drawing the curtains shut. "Before I begin, you must under your mother swore me to secrecy. She only had your best interest at heart and wanted to protect you." He stood before grabbing her shoulder. "We weren't sure if you'd figure it out on your own, but your mother was convinced that you would find out someday."
Catherine exasperated a gasp covering her face, everything was a lie. Her mother was alive. Her grave was a cover to hid her own trail. "I saw her near death, how?" Catherine grasped at her clothes in a panic. She tried to hold it together as her face reddens from emotion.
"Initially, Dr. White thought at the moment she was gone. After you fled out the window. The soldiers began to interrogate Dr. White and James when a cruel man appeared." Samuel paced the floor as he spoke to the young woman. "The soldiers had to be in his pockets by the amount of coin he handed the captain. That dismissed the loyalist from the good doctor's home. "
"Why didn't you tell me she was still alive?" Catherine turned away to calm herself as she wiped her tears from her eyes. She felt so angry, but happy that her mother was alive. "Who was this man?"
"By the time I arrived at your home with Connor, I didn't know what happen until I was able to get James out of prison. He said it was the same man that questioned him in the prison."
Catherine faces flash with glare, "Charles Lee." Her voice dripped with venom. Her nails dug into her palm as she thought about the man. She should
"Yes," Samuel shook his head in a nod, knowing it sounded about right. " James said as much."
She grounded her teeth as she thought about that man. Catherine had the Templar knight in her grasp. No doubt in her mind that she would have killed him when she last saw him. "Tell me more."
Samuel Adams pressed forward with more of his story. "The gentleman investigated your mother's room with his own pistol drawn. You were told that your mother was so close to death she was able to present the illusion she was. Lyle stormed the room as he watched the man place the barrel of his pistol to your mother's head. Lyle intervened while they arrested James. It looked as if the man recognized your mother, ready to kill her. Lyle told him she was dead and that the real culprit they were looking for an escape. He didn't give you your name, but if Connor hadn't wanted to check in on you. He would have found you and possibly killed you."
Catherine's eyes awoke with rage like something she never felt. "Lee was going to kill my mother thinking she done it just because her older brother was a known Assassin. So, she ran thinking it would be safer knowing the Templars would be after her. Did Achilles know?"
"I don't know the real reason why she ran." Adams shook his head "Only myself and Dr. White knew. We both thought that you were aware, but we didn't say a thing in case you weren't. "
"Where is she?" Catherine demanded
"Gone. After I got her fake papers to travel, she left on the first ship out of Boston Harbor. She was hesitant to leave you with Achilles, but I told her you'd be safe especially with Connor. She left for New York then to Europe possible England or Germany. I don't know where she went."
The story about her mother's grand escape from the colonies was a lot to take in. Fresh tears produce from Catherine's eyes. Her mother had no choice but to abandon her life and child to on the run from the Templars. Though, did Rose have plans to get to her?
"Was she ever going to come back?"
Samuel touched her shoulder to comfort the child. "She left me something to give you if you ever did stumble on the truth." He left the entrance room with haste to only come back a few minutes later with a letter in hand. "Read this when you can, but don't let any prying eyes look upon it."
Catherine gave an abut nod, "I need to get going." She saw the light from dawn break through the windows. "I got to go. Thank you, Mister. Adams. Safe travels."
"You too miss. Cormac. Be safe, be wary of the Templars."
She stuffed the letter into her pocket before leaving Adams to enjoy his morning. He shut the door behind her as she quickly left.
The rising sun touched the rooftop of Boston as slipped through the alleys. The sky was starting to fill beautiful with bright oranges and pinks. Catherine was aware that her father could be awake by now. She remembered that she had locked her door before leaving. the young woman huffed knowing she was cutting it close until she saw a proud bird circling the sky. She recognized the maroon feathers that reflected in the rising sun.
The Irish girl pushed her fingers between her lips and blew a whistle. The hawk replied with a long cry.
"Aries..." She breathed.
Aries sailed through the skies above the young woman, circling her head. He dropped a letter at her feet. She quickly picked up the letter that only had a few letters on it.
We have the box, we will meet you at the highest point in Boston at sundown.
She clutched the letter close to her chest. There was so much to take in at the moment. Catherine knew there was so much she had to plan and figure out. Her senses were adrift in her own emotions.
Catherine was unaware of the footsteps that crept up behind her. Aries screamed as he dived down in front of her to give warning. She gave a curious glance towards her fateful companion. In a blink of an eye, an aerial knife found its target in the wing of Aries.
Catherine let out a quiet scream when she turned around to face the culprit. The blunt end of a pistol hit her temple hard causing her to fall the ground. Catherine hit the cobblestone with force, her vision doubled as she stared at a pair of boots on the ground.
She could only look weekly up at the man that had hit her. Charles Lee looked down at the young woman, his eyes were cold as black steel. His face bruised and purple from the thrashing Catherine gave. The swelling under his eye gave a clear indication she had broken his eye socket. She could still see the impression of her claw marks barring into his neck.
"Lee." She growled like a wild animal.
Lee kicked the young women in her side. When the Templar's boot made contact with her wound causing her to yelp. "I've been watching your girl. Your father is unaware of your nightly activities, but I caught you red-handed."
"I've done nothing wrong.
Aries squawked from the pain. She could only watch as Lee circle her and step towards her hawk.
She croaked as she tried to crawl to her fallen friend. "Leave him alone." There was still a chance he could be saved.
She watched in horror as Lee pressed the full pressure of his boot down on Aries. Pressing on the poor animal until his life was gone. She felt sick at the sound of the crushing of the bones.
"Aries…"She tried to stand, but her wounds held her back. It was the most disgusting act she ever witnessed by from another human being.
"Pathetic bird." He kicked the carcass over. "We can call that even, though I am not done with you."
"Are you going to kill me?" Catherine gritted her teeth. "If you are, get it over with."
Charles kneeled in front of the young woman, grabbing her chin. "Not yet, my dear, you have something that belongs to the Order. Your father is too much of a coward to extract it from you."
Catherine jerked her chin away from the Templar and spat in his face. Using his back hand, he slapped Catherine across the face. The slap echoed off the walls in the empty alley.
Catherine couldn't believe how strong this man was. "He's more of a man then you are." He kicked her again after her statement. This time he hit her face with his boot. She fell back over with her nose gushing blood. She struggled to stay awake from the blow to the temple. Her world fell into darkness.
Charles Lee felt victory for successful sneaking up on the teenage girl. The task was elementary for the Templar Knight. A few months of her playing Assassin was no match for his years of training. It was pathetic that Achilles had to latch onto the young woman like a leech to poison her against the Templars. It was not surprising.
He had caught sight of her slithering an alleyway like a snake with interior motivate. He watched as Adams smuggled the young woman into his home after she inquired about her mother.
Her mother was a master spy who smuggled years worth of information to her overseas brethren. Charles Lee crouched over the unconscious woman and pushed her onto her back. He reached into her inside coat pocket to fish out the letters that she hid.
He stuffed it into his own coat pocket. Lee didn't spend another moment in the location, he could hear the marching of British boots. With little effort he was able to pick up the young woman, throwing her over his shoulder.
He knew of a safe location he could stash Catherine until he got the information he needed. The Second in Command could dispose of her the way he sees fit afterward. He would most likely leave her in the mercy of the Grand Master.
Shay knocked onto his daughter's door waiting for a reply. It was half-past ten according to the old clock hanging on the wall in the living room. He wanted to give the teenager privacy knowing it was important for bounders. Though he could feel something was amidst from the prolonged silence. The ship captain didn't give much trust to his daughter. Especially after she picked a fight with the second in command of the Templar Knights.
He placed his hand on her door handle to push in. His highly trained ears caught the sound of footsteps heading up the steps to the apartment. Through the front door, Azura appeared with a basket under her arm.
"Good morning, Master Cormac." She placed the basket on the table pulling out a dish wrapped in linen. "I brought breakfast. I don't know about your cooking skills. I am sure Catherine would appreciate something different."
Shay blinked in surprise, "Azura, that's kind of you, but I am trying to wake Catherine."
"I wouldn't go in there quite yet. If my father barged in on me without warning. I would be terrified. I know I am not her biggest fan, but it's better then her father walking in on her." She walked past him. She knocked on the door before entering.
"Catherine? It's late in the morning. The time to rise is now." She walked to the teenager's bed before ripping off the blanket. She made an irritated sigh at the empty bed.
Catherine was a slippery one, but from what she heard from Thomas and Christopher Gist. The two Cormac's were actually getting along. It was disappointing. She hoped that Catherine didn't go after Charles.
"Cormac!" Azura called out, "We have a problem." Her eyes laid on the window.
Shay marched into the room at a fast pace. Disappointment appeared on the man's face from the sight of his daughter's bed. Azura never saw a man that looked so heartbroken.
"I need to go find her." His voice turned to anger as he walked to the main room of the house and grabbed his coat.
Azura sighed with compassion. "Don't jump to conclusions. She might be in the market. Your place is pretty empty of basic necessitates. Just check there first."
Shay didn't say anything as he pulled on his coat. Azura bit her bottom lip and prayed that the younger Cormac was alright. Shay almost ripped the hinges off the door when he was about to storm out. He stumbled in his steps when dark brown eyes stared him down at the base of the stairs of the tavern. A young man in a white coat with a bundle in his arms that was covered by red fabric.
"Where is she?" The young man growled starring up at Catherine.
Shay knew that the young man who stood before him was Connor.
