Hello. Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. This brain baby has honestly been in my drafts for a year and I wasn't sure if I wanted to post it until now. I have a bunch of W.I.P.s for my current fics, but it might take a while for me to post anything since I've been struggling with motivation.
Anyway, I hope you guys like this. I was planning on just making it a drabble fic.
Disclaimer: I only own the OC. Black Clover belongs to Tabata Yuki.
It was an ideal day. There wasn't a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was just the right mix of cool and warm to feel comfortable.
And on this particularly fine and ideal day, a certain freshly recruited Black Bull, Luck Voltia, found himself feeling particularly bored.
It's not that there wasn't anything to do around the base of the Black Bulls. He'd only been here for a week and he already knew that there was always something to do: pick fights with Magna, steal Magna's desserts, prank Magna (he was just so fun to rile up!), train, explore..., but Luck didn't feel like doing any of those usual things! Luck wondered if he was getting sick or something because the fact he wasn't itching for a fun fight right now was unnatural. He sighed and flipped upright from his upside down position on the couch. Maybe he will take a walk around the base. That might give him some inspiration.
He left the common room and let his feet lead him to wherever they decided he was going to go. Maybe he'd end up in the kitchens, maybe he'll end up on the roof. Surely he'll think of something.
In reality, he ended up in neither of those locations. Luck blinked, confused at the room he was standing in.
Why had his feet led him to Marion's room?
Marion Thorn was a girl a year older than him. Luck didn't know her very well other than the fact she had side-shaved dark purple hair and yellow eyes, and that she loved to sleep. Seriously. She'd fallen asleep in just about every nook and cranny of the base by now from what he'd heard, and he himself had found her taking a snooze in some pretty bizarre locations. The tops of the bookshelves, the cupboards, on Yami... Luck had even found her in the icebox once on a particularly hot day, and Vanessa had told him of a time Marion had scared the living daylights out of Charmy when the girl had fallen asleep in the oven.
Yikes.
Other than that, all he knew was that she used some sort of needle/voodoo magic (he wasn't quite sure which one it was), which was pretty cool. He wondered how it worked! Maybe he'd get the chance to fight her someday...
Anyway, the girl was currently curled up napping on a cushion in the corner, clutching a straw doll to her chest like it was a stuffed animal. The part of her hair that wasn't shaven, which was kept short and shaggy, fell into her eyes with some longer strands slipping into the corner of her slightly open mouth.
By her side was an object that caught his attention.
It was a wooden cane.
Why would she have a cane? Luck poked it. She wasn't injured, and she didn't strike him as someone that carried things around for no reason. Hell, he'd never seen her use it at all, so why did she have it?
As he continued to poke at the odd item, a sudden, mischievous thought formed in his brain and the smile that had fallen from his face due to his boredom resurfaced, wide as ever. Maybe he could hide it as a fun little prank! Watching her try to find it might be entertaining enough to get him out of his little predicament.
He grabbed it carefully so she wouldn't wake up from any odd thumping sound. Then he returned to wandering around the base to hopefully find a suitable hiding place. She'll be running all over like a headless chicken for sure! Maybe he'll hear her curse! This was going to be so exciting!
He came across a broom closet on the next floor, hidden in a more discrete corner of the base where all the furniture was covered in dust. He carefully leaned it against a set of brooms before closing the door and skipping off with a jovial hum.
Oh, this is going to be fun! Luck was bound to get some entertainment from this.
This should be interesting!
...
An hour later, Luck watched amused as Marion stumbled into the common room, her expression a wild mixture of panic and anger. Her arms were stretched out in front of her, flailing around wildly like she was a madwoman. Sometimes, her hands smacked into furniture right in front or beside her as she moved. She was muttering frantically under her breath, and it wasn't until she passed him that he heard it.
"Where it it, where is it, where is it, where is -EEP!" she tripped over a chair leg and Luck had to stifle a giggle. How had she missed that? It was right in front of her.
Beside him, however, Vanessa wasn't laughing. She stood from the couch and approached the girl who was scrambling to get up. "What's the matter Mari?" she asked, crouching down beside the younger girl, who had pushed herself up to her knees.
"It's a bad day..." Marion mumbled quietly. Her hands were shaking and she looked ready to cry. Luck felt a tingle of confusion in his chest. A 'bad day'? What did that mean? She'd slept most of the day away. How could it be a bad day if she hadn't even been awake during most of it?
Vanessa seemed to understand, though, "I see. Would you like me or Finral to help you get somewhere? Or is there something else that's wrong?"
Marion was actually crying now, "I-I ca- *hic*... I... I..."
"Deep breaths, kid. Don't rush yourself." Vanessa ran her fingers gently through Marion's hair in an attempt to comfort the girl.
"I can't find my cane!" The younger girl exclaimed, "It's gone!"
Vanessa froze and Luck felt his thoughts screech to a halt. Seriously, what was so important about that cane? Vanessa quickly regained her bearings, "Are you sure you didn't misplace it, sweetie?" the resident witch asked, her tone clearly showing she didn't believe her own words but was trying to cover all bases.
The younger girl nodded frantically, her arms flailed as she exclaimed, "I had it! It was with me this morning! I sat down to take a nap and it was right next to me. Then... then when I woke up, and it was gone!" She was gasping for air now and tugging at the locks of hair that weren't shaven as she rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet, trembling like a leaf in a breeze. She was having a panic attack, Luck realized.
Was this all because of the cane? Had he gone too far without realizing?
Luck still wasn't sure what the deal with the cane was, but he knew now that in some really bad way, he'd messed up.
Vanessa rubbed soothing circles into the distressed girl's back, "Shh, it's okay. It's okay. Just breathe. Follow my breaths, okay? In... Out... In... Out..."
Little by little, Marion calmed down under the gentle touch of the Black Bull's resident big sister. She sniffled and let out a hiccup as Vanessa pulled her into a hug, "It'll be okay. We'll find the cane. Would you like me to take you back to your room while we look?"
Marion sniffled and gave a small hesitant nod.
As the girls walked away, Luck finally opened his mouth to ask his questions, "What was that about? And what's this about a cane?"
Magna blinked, "You don't know?" then realization shone in his eyes, "Oh, right. Marion hasn't had a 'bad day' in a while. The last one was a few weeks before you joined."
Luck stared at him as a sign for the teen to go on.
"Anyway, Marion sometimes has these 'bad days' where she feels more tired and sluggish than usual. She becomes more easily susceptible to emotional distress on these sorts of days, and on really bad days, when she's really stressed, she'll have these 'tremble fits' as we've been calling them where she starts shaking uncontrollably. These really bad days can usually be improved with a bit of sugar, though, so Charmy will usually give her some juice. Not too much, though, because that makes things worse..."
He cleared his throat, "Anyway, I'm rambling. On her bad days, she has more trouble getting around because her Mana Sense also gets messed up from the stress and fatigue, so she uses a cane."
Luck blinked. Okay, that made sense for the most part. But something about that statement still didn't seem right, "Why would she need to use Mana Sense to get around?"
Now Magna looked even more surprised, "Did we never tell you? Marion is blind."
Luck's eyes widened.
Oh... Shit.
"She's blind?"
Magna nodded slowly, "Yeah. Apparently she used to be able to see, but certain circumstances I have no right to share caused her vision to deteriorate until she went completely blind. It's before my time here, so I can't tell you much anyway. She's used to it now, but as you just saw, some days can be a bit rough... Now, we need to find her cane."
From his place leaning against the door, Finral nodded, "Magna's right. Everyone, split up! Check anywhere you could possibly think of for the cane. We need to find it before Yami finds out."
For once, everyone listened without complaint. Luck pretended to search some cupboards and closets, guilt starting to weigh him down. He really had messed up. He'd just wanted to quell his boredom and have some fun. He hadn't wanted to hurt anyone. Sure, he expected Marion would be annoyed, but he hadn't intended to hurt her feelings quite like this. Hurting someone in a spar was inevitable. People took hits and burns and bruises happened. It was all part of the activity. However, hurting someone's feelings was just mean, and Luck had done just that.
He sighed.
What a disaster. Instead of the entertainment he'd hoped for, Luck ended up causing his squad mate to have a panic attack, and now he felt horrible. Luck closed the closet he was 'searching' and decided he'd stalled long enough. He knew where the cane was, so he should take it back to her... and maybe apologize, too. He turned to head to the remote corner he'd hidden the cane in.
However, before he could leave, he saw the door beside him open to reveal Vanessa moving to leave. It was at this moment Luck realized he'd been 'searching' the area near Marion's room without noticing. Wow, he was distracted. The woman caught sight of him immediately and closed the door before looking to him with a worried frown on her lips.
"Any luck yet?" she asked. Luck shook his head with an apologetic smile. She sighed before she sent him a stern look, "Luck, I have a question for you."
Uh oh. He really hoped she wasn't onto him, "Yeah?" he asked, "What is it?"
"Were you aware of Marion's blindness? Be honest with me."
Luck bit his lip and shook his head. No point lying. The perceptive witch would be able to tell, "No. Magna told me about it after you left the room..."
"I see." her gaze turned almost severe. now, "One more question. Were you the one to take Marion's cane?"
He tensed. He knew it was coming, but that didn't make the question any easier to hear.
"Everyone else was aware of Marion's blindness and knows about her bad days." Vanessa explains, "Nobody would dare to mess with her cane because we all know how important it is to her. At least, everyone except for you."
Luck looked down guiltily and nodded, "It... It was supposed to just be a harmless prank." he admitted playing with his sleeves like a scolded five year old caught stealing sweets, "I hadn't mean to hurt her like that..."
Vanessa sighed and placed a firm hand on his shoulder, "I believe you, Luck. However, in the end, even if you didn't mean to, you hurt Marion's feelings. Now, I'm not the one you should be telling this to. You should try to make it up to her and apologize, okay?"
Luck perked up at the response and nodded eagerly, "Okay!" and he ran off without another word.
He used his lightning magic to get to the broom closet as fast as possible, and he practically ripped the door off its hinges when he threw it open. He quickly grabbed the cane and sprinted back to Marion's room at record speeds before he paused at the door as he was hit with a slight dilemma.
What was he going to say? He shuffled awkwardly at the realization. He never really had to apologize to someone before, now that he thought about it. At least, he never felt the need to. Sure he'd needed to 'apologize' to that noble kid, but that whole apology had been far from genuine. Luck had no regrets at that time. This time, he did. He wanted to make it up to Marion. What did people say when apologizing anyway? "Sorry?"
That felt empty and fake.
"Whose there?" called a voice from the other side of the door, and Luck felt himself tensing up again.
Shit. Time's up.
"It's -uh- Luck... Voltia... Luck Voltia!"
Wow, Luck! Wonderful job, Luck! You have successfully made yourself sound like an idiot, Luck!
He wanted to curl up into a hole and die from the embarrassment. He was glad Magna wasn't here with him because he'd never let Luck live that down.
"Can I, um, come in?" he called awkwardly.
It was silent for a moment before he heard a quiet, wary, "okay."
He entered to find his fellow squad mate turned into a blanket cocoon, snuggled firmly into a nest of what seemed to be every blanket and pillow and cushion-y object in the base. It honestly looked quite comfortable; though, Luck wondered how Vanessa was able to gather it all so quickly.
"Did you need something, Luck?" Marion asked, taking a small sip from a mug he just noticed she had. It smelled like tea.
Luck nodded before realizing she couldn't see that. "Yeah. I... I wanted to talk to you. About your cane."
She blinked startled before her expression turned thoughtful. A moment later realization came to her, "You were involved in its disappearance."
"Yeah." he admitted, "I took it, and hid it in a broom closet one floor up. It was supposed to be a friendly prank, but... yeah. I didn't know you actually needed it since I'd never seen you use it, and, well..."
She listened on in silence, her face carefully blank as she waited for him to continue.
Luck took a deep breath, "I'm sorry! It was a jerk move, and I shouldn't have done it. I have it here with me." he walked over carefully, not wanting to disturb the comfortable-looking bedding nest too much, before he placed the cane in front of her, making sure it touched her leg so she wouldn't have to feel around for it.
She reaches out of her blanket cocoon to lay a hand on the item. She ran her fingers along it carefully, as if checking for damage. "It's not broken. That's good." she commented before sending him a small smile, "Wanna sit down? I want I talk."
Luck felt his eyes widen in surprise, but he obeyed. Even so, he wasn't able to stop himself from shifting around nervously.
Marion took another sip of tea before she began, "So, from what I can tell, this was all just a prank gone wrong?"
"Yeah." Luck nodded, "You... you don't sound mad. Why?"
She released an empty chuckle, "I am not mad. Upset, sure, but not mad." she took a larger gulp of tea this time before she continued, "As for why... well, when you came in and admitted to what you had done, you sounded just as upset as I felt. It was clear to me at that moment that you regretted what you did."
"Huh?" Luck was confused. He hadn't realized it was that obvious.
"I'm blind, not deaf." there was a touch of amusement in her tone when she said that, as if it was something she said a lot, "When I lost my sight, my other senses became a bit more enhanced to make up for it. My hearing in particular improved quite a bit. I've gotten good at perceiving emotion and intent from a person's tone of voice."
That was actually really cool, Luck thought. He wondered if her blindness also improved her Mana Sense. He didn't ask, though, feeling it wasn't a good time for that sort of question session.
"Anyway, I'm getting off track." Marion continued, "While I am now aware of what happened, and while I can say I forgive you, I can't say that what you did was okay."
Ah, he knew it. "I'm sorry." he mumbled.
"I know you are." she sent him a small smile and reached over to give him a reassuring pat on the head, "What I am saying is that you shouldn't do it again. I am willing to forgive you this time, but that is it. There won't be a third chance. Understand?"
Luck nodded, knowing she'd feel it this time since her hand was still on his head, "Yeah. Understood."
"Good." Marion finished her tea and reached over to set the empty mug on her bedside table, "Now that all the serious stuff is out of the way, tell me about yourself, Luck. I don't really know you very well since your still new."
And with that, the pair ended up chatting excitedly for the next few hours until they grew tired and fell asleep together in the comfy bedding nest.
That was how Vanessa found them a few hours later when neither of them came down for dinner. They had looked too cute, so she let them be and told the others to not disturb them.
Something told her that this was going to be the start of a very interesting friendship.
And here it is. I hope you enjoyed. Please leave a like and a review if you did. Constructive criticism is also appreciated! :) Stay safe and healthy and have a great day!
