The Ros who in all honesty only Harry can relate to, stands at the top of the tower and for the first time since she heard the bomb explode which had killed Adam, is grateful that his death had been instantaneous. Because no one and certainly not Samuel Walker who by all accounts had been a loving husband and father with everything to live for would have launched himself from somewhere that would have required him to climb onto the ledge, before either jumping or diving headfirst to his death. Which having lifted Dimitri to see if it was possible which it was, suggests that whoever disposed of Walker must have been someone who not only he trusted, but in all probability knew he was there to meet Harry.
Both of which raise the question as to whether he or she would have disposed of Harry in the same way had he arrived first? Thoughts which she has to consider, despite not wanting to imagine not only the effect it would have had on Ruth who wears her heart on her sleeve when it comes to him, but a grid without Harry at the helm, despite the ever-looming possibility that given the change in his personal circumstances might see him resigning, will leave her feeling bereft. Thoughts which are heightened when she and Dimitri are walking towards the front door where the evidence as to the exact place where Walker landed is still very much there, adding to her belief that whoever was responsible for Walker's death could even as they leave the building be hiding in the shadows and adding them to his or her list of people to be disposed of. Which is why having explained her concerns to Dimitri they take a less than direct route back to what she knows will be a grid without Harry, reminding her of the time when she had kept the traitorous Connie alive by doing the same thing but in this case she tells her more rational self, knowing that Harry and Ruth will be back in the morning, although any later than that and she will panic, she puts down to having been thinking about not only Harry but Adam.
Although whether Dimitri can read that there is more to her concern than she has voiced she doesn't know and is why when they finally walk through the pods she waits until he has gone in search of Tariq before heading towards Beth and Jo who in her absence, have as she asked them to weighed up the pros and cons of several hotels facing the embankment, concluding that the need for security on the river side because it is where the press will take up residence can be met without having to call on extra resources. In the same way that they have earmarked The Radison because both the accommodation and conference room are adequate in that they will be able to house both delegations and the limited numbers of both MI5 and CIA personnel to ensure that the deal goes through without any last-minute surprises.
Away from the hot seat which Ros is currently occupying, the man who has been occupying her thoughts, having left the grid, not only intending to put Ruth's needs first by ensuring that was left of the day was stress free for both of them, is not only confident that the team will in their absence have made progress but is more than aware that it could easily have been him rather than Walker who had been unceremoniously packed off to the next world and the effect that his death would have had on Ruth. Which is why as a means of distraction he suggests that she catches up on some much-needed sleep. Sleep that he also needs but because he is still looking for answers to so many questions and having resisted the urge to suggest they go to bed, not easy when it would have been a lot more comfortable and certainly more intimate and helped him to relax in that they would almost certainly have made love, has left her curled up on the sofa, giving him as he always does when he needs to think and none more so than on the first morning when he had woken up in his own bed with Ruth beside him, the chance to wander into the kitchen, make himself a cup of coffee and then open the back door and gaze out over the garden.
Only to discover than rather than get answers and not wanting to call Ros to see what if anything she has concluded during her visit to the tower, because anything significant and she would have called him, he hears Malcolm's voice telling him that Ruth wasn't ready to return to the grid and before that when he had walked away from her on the landing in Malcolm's house how his response to what Ruth needed and in a way that only Malcolm would have dared to suggest, was to ensure that they got the happy ending they deserved, unlike so many others who had gone before him in the ridiculous belief that defending the realm was the be all and end all, he needed to be the one buck the trend and resign while there were enough years left that they could enjoy themselves to the full. Admirable and achievable when they had been in Hastings, but now with the future of the free world is at stake, not so.
A theme which is picked up and not surprisingly in the morning when, 'if it had been you not Walker, we would have had people crawling all over that building for clues but there wasn't even a guard on the door,' Ros tells, enhancing his belief that what Malcolm had said made sense and more so because when he and Ruth had been having dinner she had said, 'you do realise that it could just have easily been you that was thrown off that balcony don't you,' with a look which suggested that if it had been him, unlike the time when she had been in Cyprus when he had known she was alive that it would have broken her heart, and now when he looks across the grid to where she is sitting at her desk with her head buried in files, not only does it re affirm the depth of his love for her, but that god forbid anything does happen to part them again. Only for his thoughts to be interrupted when Dolby to rings, and demands his attendance along with Ros.
Refraining from saying what he really thinks and flashing her one of his it's going to be alright smiles, 'if we're not back within in twenty minutes find an excuse to get me out of there,' he tells Ruth, before for the second time in as many days he takes stairs to the heady heights of the first floor and this time forces himself to knock.
'Come,' grates but when they are both about to sit down and Dolby says, 'are you sure that you're up to this?' Ros grits her teeth rather than walk round what is a desk that is twice the size of Harry's and smack him one, whilst Harry who can see Ros's balling up her fists resists saying just do it Ros, as he does asking Dolby to hand him a piece of paper on which he will quite happily spell out the reason that he going to resign.
Instead waiting until he can see that Dolby is about to repeat the question before saying, 'come on Richard you know very well that there is more to this than meets the eye, so stop trying to suggest that in some way I or my section should have seen it coming and rather than try and apportion blame if there's nothing else then please just let us get on with the job that we're paid to do.' Before timing it to coincide with Ros opening the door by adding, 'good to know that you agree with me.'
Two days later when to all intents and purposes they have been backed even further into a corner, thanks to a spectacularly unhelpful CIA or more precisely Sarah Caulfield, Ros's opposite number, who when Harry and Ros had met her made it quite clear that they as an organisation had it in hand, has forced them to play what feels like their final card in the form of Dimitri and Beth, who being new won't unless someone has been checking, know or ask who they are when they attend Walker's funeral and even if they do are ready to say they are representing Harry who hadn't been able to come because he's been laid low with a stomach bug.
Arriving early and ahead of whoever else might be attending which given the number of seats, suggests that given Walkers profile those who arrive at the last minute will find themselves either standing at the back or on the balcony, the second of which they themselves choose to do, from which point they will be able to take photos of all but the family thanks to Tariq who has supplied them with a camera in the form of a watch inherited from Malcolm. Dimitri after his trip with Ros fully aware of what is a stake and Beth still grateful that Harry has given her a second chance feeling that she needs to prove herself. Although neither of them are prepared for impact that it has on them when Walker's wife and daughters follow the coffin into the room because despite all their training, the flag draped on the coffin is unnervingly chilling.
