Diary of Colton Hayes
June 18, 1899
Sent Travers and Jed out again, hoping they'd find us a spot to hunker down. The cold's creeping into our bones out here, and it's gettin' unbearable. But when they returned, they came back near empty-handed. Only thing of note was a military bunker they spotted along one of the roads. Lights were burning inside, so I suggested that tomorrow me and Travers head over there. If there are any feds holed up, they might have a clue about what the hell is going on or at least let us stay for a few while we figure out what's going on.
But that ain't the strangest part. Travers and Jed swear up and down they saw some kind of humanoid creature near those houses, said it had a head all twisted and wrong, with tentacles instead of hair—suction cups lining every strand. I almost laughed, thinking they were pulling my leg, but the look in their eyes told me otherwise.
I don't know what's worse—freezing out here or the thought of what else might be lurking in these parts. Tomorrow might give us some answers, but I'm starting to wonder if we'll even want 'em.
