Chapter 10: Embers of Resolve
Chimchar's vision blurred in and out, the world around him a haze of colors and indistinct shapes. He could faintly make out the concerned faces of Dawn and Nurse Joy, as their voices were muffled and distant, almost as if coming from underwater.
The sounds of the Pokémon Center—the beeping of machines, the hum of fluorescent lights, and the gentle rustle of movement— blended into one another.
Despite the haze Chimchar could feel the warmth of Dawn's hands gently cradling him. Though it was faint and distorted, he could hear her voice laced with worry and desperation as she pleaded with the nurse staff to help him.
Her words were hard to understand, but the emotions behind them were clear—fear, concern, sadness, and pretty much all of the above.
Chimchar didn't remember very much after that part, aside from the cool touch of a healing device against his skin.
Hours later, his eyes gradually began to flutter open, the blurry world around him slowly coming into focus. The sterile white walls and ceiling of the Pokémon Center greeted him first, and then, as he turned his head slightly, he saw her.
Dawn sat by his bedside, her eyes brimming with relief and joy as they met his. "Chimchar, you're finally awake!" she cried, rushing in to embrace him tightly.
Chimchar's gaze drifted downward as Dawn enveloped him in a warm hug. His expression unreadable.
"I'm so glad you're alright," Dawn exclaimed, pulling away from her starter. "I was really worried about you, Chimchar. You really gave me a scare."
The fire-type remained silent, his gaze still fixed downwards towards the streets. Not even a single sound escaped his breath.
Dawn rose from her seat and walked over to the open window, leaning on the windowsill as she spoke. "Shinx and Starly are already patched up too," she said, her voice soft and reassuring. "Their injuries were pretty minor compared to yours, well, that's what the nurse said."
Suddenly, the memories flooded back into Chimchar's mind—the intense battle with Piplup, the struggle against BubbleBeam, and the overwhelming force of Piplup's Bide. The images replayed vividly in his mind, causing him to grip the sheets tightly.
Dawn glanced over before walking towards the troubled Pokémon. "Don't be so hard on yourself, Chimchar," she said softly. "Every Pokémon, even the strongest ones, lose battles." She paused, her gaze thoughtful. "I mean, I'm sure even theChampion Cynthia's lost some battles at some point during her career."
The Chimp Pokémon looked up towards Dawn, uncertainty flickering in his eyes as he struggled to take her words at face value.
"Look, we lost. But there's no need to worry, we'll face Barry again, heck, we'll probably battle him a hundred more times," Dawn declared. "Loss is just as much a part of being a trainer as winning is. But it doesn't matter, because you and I are gonna get stronger, together."
The girl smiled, Barry's words echoed in her mind, Of all the trainers I've faced, you're the strongest, uplifting her spirits.
Chimchar released his grip on the sheets with a scoff, looking away from Dawn with a dismissive glance.
Dawn let out a soft sigh as she approached the nearby table and retrieved a can. "The nurse said you'd need to eat when you wake up," she explained, popping open the can. "To regain some of your energy. I know it's not much, but I have canned peaches."
She scooped a small amount of canned peaches onto the spoon and carefully approached Chimchar. "Come on, Chimchar, you need to eat up," she said gently, holding out the spoon towards him.
Chimchar glanced at the spoon, his face still clouded with frustration. He hesitated for a moment before reluctantly opening his mouth, allowing Dawn to feed him the spoonful of peaches.
"Good boy," Dawn murmured softly in an encouraging tone despite Chimchar's subdued mood. She offered another spoonful, but this time, Chimchar remained unwilling, no longer entertaining her.
Dawn gently placed the spoon and can on the bedside table and sat beside him. "You know, it's important to regain your strength, right?" Dawn said quietly, her hand resting on Chimchar's back. "Please, humor me here."
Chimchar jerked Dawn's hand off his back, he turned away, avoiding her gaze, his discomfort evident.
"Okay, I get it, you're not hungry," Dawn muttered softly, settling back into the chair beside the bed. The room felt heavy with Chimchar's silence. She shifted her eyes towards the fire-type once more, realizing he hadn't uttered a single word since he awoke.
Dawn smiled, "How about we grab some real food?"
The small humble little café was a cozy spot inside the Poké Mart, nestled in a corner with large windows that overlooked the town square. The tables were adorned with checkered tablecloths with small potted plants, creating a quaint and inviting atmosphere.
Soft music played in the background mingling with the chatter of trainers and the occasional cries of Pokémon. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods wafted through the air.
Chimchar sat quietly at the Poké Mart Café, nestled near a window with Starly and Shinx across the table. The sunlight streamed through the glass casting a warm glow over the trio.
"Okay everyone, sorry for making you wait," Dawn announced cheerfully balancing a tray laden with treats. Each plate on the tray had identical poffins, carefully shaped and decorated to resemble the faces of different iconic Pokémon.
As she distributed the plates, she paused at Shinx's side. "Shinx, you're our newest member of the team. Let's dedicate this occasion to you," she said softly, placing a plate of star-shaped poffins in front of the electric-type.
Shinx stared blankly at Dawn for a moment before taking a small, tentative, bite. His eyes lit up with delight and he quickly began eating the poffins with gusto.
"And we can't forget you either, Starly," Dawn said enthusiastically, placing a plate in front of her little flying-type.
"Star!" Starly chirped happily and immediately began pecking at the poffins, his beak tapping rapidly against the plate.
Dawn finally turned her gaze towards her starter Pokémon who was staring out the window, seemingly lost in thought and paying her no mind.
"Eat up, Chimchar. Shinx and Starly are loving it," Dawn promised, placing a plate in front of the Chimp Pokémon.
Chimchar glanced at the plate, seeing poffins shaped like various Pokémon, like Pichu, Marill, Ledyba, and even a Gulpin. His eyes narrowed when he caught a glimpse of a poffin resembling a Piplup. His face immediately darkened, and a flicker of anger flashed in his eyes.
"Oh, come on, Chimchar, please. This was really expensive," Dawn said, raising the plate so Chimchar could smell it better. "When's the next time you're gonna get food this tasty, huh?"
Chimchar sat there in annoyance, arms folded, tapping his arm impatiently.
Dawn smiled and chuckled. "Oh, I get it, you want me to feed you like earlier, right?" She reached for a fork and knife on a napkin. She raised the plate to Chimchar and offered a forkful. "Saw aww!"
Chimchar's eyes narrowed further, his frustration growing. Dawn's persistence was starting to grate on him, and he clenched his fists.
"Come on already, Chimchar," Dawn urged, nudging the fork closer to him. Oblivious to his rising anger, she continued to coax him, the fork hovering just inches from his face.
Chimchar's tail flame flared slightly, his eyes darted back and forth between Dawn and the fork, his body tensing as he struggled to contain his anger.
"Just one bite, Chimchar," Dawn pleaded softly, moving the fork even closer to his face.
Chimchar's patience finally snapped. With a sudden, fierce motion, he slapped the plate away. Dawn screamed as the plate shattered against the ground, the sound echoing through the entire Poké Mart.
Everyone in the café turned to look, eyes wide in shock, as Dawn sat there in disbelief, the broken pieces of the plate scattered around her.
Shinx and Starly looked up from their food, glaring at the fire-type, their eyes filled with disapproval.
Dawn stood up abruptly, her face flushed with anger. "What is your problem!? Why do you have to be like this? Why?!" she demanded, her voice sharp and filled with frustration.
"Chimchar, Char, Char!" Chimchar erupted from his seat, his fur bristling with fury as he fixed his trainer a searing glare. His eyes blazed with an intense, simmering anger, and his teeth were bared in a snarl.
"Okay, you're mad we lost against Barry, right?" Dawn yelled, frustration building up in her voice. "Get over it already! All it means is we have to get stronger! You have to get stronger!"
Overcome by a surge of raw emotion, Chimchar charged towards his trainer with a furious roar. Not holding anything back, he shoved her with force, sending her stumbling backwards. Dawn, caught off guard, lost her balance and landed hard on the ground, her hands flailing in a futile attempt to steady herself.
Chimchar's chest heaved with heavy breaths as he watched his trainer in disbelief. His eyes widening as he processed the scene unfolding before him.
Dawn raised her arm suddenly, a shard of glass protruded from her palm, causing blood to trickle down her sleeve.
The pain etched across her face was evident as she looked at Chimchar, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and fear. "Chimchar, you're scaring me," she uttered, her voice trembling with emotion.
In an instant, Shinx and Starly rushed to Dawn's defense. Shinx's fur crackled with electricity, his mane standing on end as he emitted an intimidating growl. Starly, wings slightly ruffled and talons sharpened, took a defensive battle stance.
Chimchar, taken aback by the sudden turn of events, took a hesitant step back. He glanced around and met the gaze of everyone in the Poké Mart, who looked at him with expressions ranging from anger to disapproval.
Feeling the weight of their stares and Dawn's distress, Chimchar's resolve faltered. Tears welled up in his eyes as he looked back at Dawn, who was now crying softly while clutching her injured hand.
The sight pierced his heart, and with a conflicted expression he turned away and rushed out of the store. The door swung shut behind him with the sharp jingle of the bell hanging above it.
Dawn's tear-filled eyes followed Chimchar's hasty departure through the doorway. With a trembling voice choked with emotion, she called out, "Wait, no, Chimchar, where are you going!? Chimchar!"
Chimchar dashed through the bustling streets, a blue of fiery fur streaking past several pedestrians. Onlookers turned to watch in surprise as he raced by in awe as an orange streak dashed passed them.
Dawn stood at the Poké Mart door, tears streaming down her face, her voice raw with desperation as she screamed into the street, "Come back!"
Dawn swung around abruptly, her tear-streaked face determined and resolute as she faced Shinx and Starly. "You two," she urged urgently, her voice cracking with emotion, "we have to go after him!"
The two Pokémon's eyes immediately fell on Dawn's injured hand, blood still dribbling down her palm. Dawn noticed their worried stares but didn't dwell on it, focusing instead on her starter.
With a shared nod, Shinx and Starly dashed out of the Poké Mart alongside Dawn, starting a charge through the bustling streets.
They raced forward, Dawn scanning the crowded streets for any sign of the fire-type. Passersby glanced curiously, but the trio pressed on, driven by Dawn's resolve to find Chimchar and repair their bond.
The girl's eyes widened as she spotted Chimchar turning a corner ahead. "There he is!" she exclaimed, exasperation and hope in her voice. She quickened her pace, Shinx and Starly close behind.
The Oreburgh Mine sprawled beneath the rugged landscape near the city. Its entrance was marked by weathered and dusty wooden supports and mining equipment scattered around. Inside, the tunnels wind through solid rock walls, their surfaces rough and uneven thanks to years of excavation.
In the dimly lit depths of the mine, two miners paused in their work, leaning against their pickaxes as they took a breather.
The older miner, his weathered face streaked with dust and sweat. wiped his brow with a ragged sleeve, "Hey, did you hear about Roark? They say he's been pushing for more excavations lately?"
His younger companion, adjusted his helmet and squinting down the tunnel, nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah, I heard he's aiming to hit a new vein down in Sector C. Says it's gonna be a big one."
"Roark's always been the ambitious type," The older miner, a touch of admiration in his gravelly voice. "Got us digging deeper and faster than anyone before him."
The younger nodded in agreemen, a wry smile playing on his lips as he surveyed the rocky terrain, "True. But you know how he is—he expects perfection. Can be tough to keep up sometimes.
"Well, if anyone can find that vein, it's him," The older miner, scratching his head and nodding towards Roark's latest project. "Heard he's got an eye for these things."
Their conversation was abruptly interrupted as a blur or orange streaked past them like a rocket, causing both miners to startle and momentarily freeze in surprise. They exchanged wide-eyed glances, taken aback by the unexpected sight.
The older miner, squinting after the enigmatic Pokémon that vanished into the cave's dark depths. "Yeah, must've been a wild one. Not something you see every day down here."
"Guess even Pokémon can't resist the lure of Oreburgh's riches," The younger miner joked, shaking his head with a grin.
Suddenly, both miners turned towards the cave entrance at the sound of approaching footsteps. Their eyes widened as they saw a determined-looking black-haired girl emerging into the dim light of the mine.
By her side were two Pokémon—a Starly with sleek feathers and an alert stance, and a Shinx crackling with static electricity, its fur bristling with energy.
The older miner squinted slightly, shading his eyes against the dimness to get a better look, while the younger miner adjusted his helmet, curiosity piqued by the unexpected visitors.
Dawn's face was pale, her breaths shallow and ragged with the blood still trinkling from the open wound on her hand; her steps faltered as she leaned heavily against the cave wall for support. "Did you guys see..." she began, her voice wavering with exhaustion. "...a Chimchar come through this way?"
The miners, noticing Dawn's sorry state, exchanged a concerned glance before the older miner gestured towards the tunnel where Chimchar had vanished.
"Over there," he explained, his voice echoing softly in the cavernous space of the mine. "We saw something resembling a Chimchar dart that way right before you showed up."
The younger miner nodded in agreement, his expression mirroring the older's concern. "You gotta go quick," he added. "It seemed to be in a hurry. We'll keep an eye out here."
Dawn nodded weakly, grateful for their assurance, and summoned the rest of her strength to continue her search.
The three raced deeper into the Oreburgh Mine until she reached a point where the cave split into three tunnels. Gasping for breath, she looked over her shoulder to her two Pokémon.
"Here's the plan you guys," Dawn said urgently. "Chimchar must have gone into one of these tunnels. Let's split up and find him!"
Shinx barked eagerly and bolted towards the left tunnel, crackling with electricity. Starly, with its wings tucked close, chirped and hurried towards the right tunnel.
Determined and focused, Dawn charged into the middle tunnel, her heart pounding with hope of finding Chimchar soon in the depths of the mine. As she hurried deeper into the Oreburgh Mine, her footsteps echoing against the rough stone floor, she spotted a figure just up ahead. With her injured hand still leaking and her breaths ragged, she slowed her pace, approaching cautiously.
As she got closer, she noticed a young man with vibrant red hair and glasses chipping away at a stubborn rock wall. He wore a distinctive mining outfit consisting of a gray short-sleeved jacket and baggy pants adorned with yellow and black outlines, neatly tucked into sturdy boots with red soles. A black tank top peeked out from under his jacket, his hands were covered in a white gloves with yellow accents, and atop his head sat a red mining helmet.
The miner paused mid-strike, turning to face Dawn with a mixture of surprise and curiosity as she approached.
"E-excuse me," Dawn called out, her voice echoing softly in the cavern. The miner adjusted his glasses and set down his pickaxe, giving her his undivided attention. She continued, her urgency evident, "Have you seen a Chimchar pass through here? It's really important that I find him."
The man studied Dawn for a moment, assessing her sincerity before nodding thoughtfully. "I haven't seen a Chimchar, but I'll keep an eye out. They can move pretty quickly in these tunnels. But I'll be sure to keep a look out."
As Dawn stumbled closer, her steps growing unsteady, the world seemed to blur around her. Panting heavily, she reached out for support, her hand trembling as it grazed against the rough cave wall.
Concern furrowed across the miner's brow, his gaze focusing intently on the girl. "Are you feeling okay?" he asked, he took a step closer, ready to offer assistance if needed.
Dawn stagged forward, her steps faltering as fatigued weighed heavily upon her. Her hand slid down the rough cave wall, leaving behind a faint smear of blood. With a heavy sigh, she dropped to her knees, then fell unconscious onto the ground.
"Kid, are you okay!?" the man cried out in alarm, rushing to the girl's side. He dropped to his knees beside her, gently shaking her shoulders in a desperate attempt to rouse her. "Kid, get up! Kid!"
Dawn laid unconscious as the man urgently shook her. In her dazed state, she murmured softly, "C-Chim... Char."
As Shinx sprinted through the rugged tunnels, his determined steps reverberated against the rocky terrain. Eventually, the tunnels converged, and he found himself face to face with Starly.
Confusion sparked amongst the two Pokémon, who both thought they had been heading in separate directions.
"Shinx, Shinx!" Starly chirped sharply, wings tensing with agitation.
"Star, Starly!" Shinx countered, his voice tinged with uncertainty and a hint of frustration.
Their voices echoed off the rough cave walls, filling the narrow passageway with their animated discourse. Starly's feathers ruffled slightly with tension, his wings gleaming faintly in the dim light. Meanwhile, Shinx stood his ground, his ears twitching nervously as he tried to make heads or tails of the situation.
Before they could settle their dispute, the ground beneath them trembled violently. Stalactites loosened from the cave ceiling, sending sharp shards of rock plummeting toward the ground.
Both Pokémon reacted instinctively—Starly anchored himself against the cave wall with sharp talons, while Shinx leaped backward with agile reflexes.
Amidst the chaos, a formidable Lairon emerged from the shadows—a stocky, armored Pokémon with a dark gray body and intimidating blue eyes. Its iron-plated segments clinked faintly as it moved, exuding an aura of authority and power.
With a thunderous roar, the Lairon unleashed a Rock Slide, hurling boulders and debris toward Shinx and Starly with tremendous force.
The Pokémon acted swiftly, just barely dodging the incoming barrage by mere inches. Shinx's fur stood on end with residual static electricity, while Starly's talons remained firm against the cave wall.
The dust settled slowly, leaving the cavern in a tense silence punctuated only by the occasional drip of water from the rocks above.
Dawn's eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the dim light filtering through the cave. Blinking slowly, she took in her surroundings—the cool, damp ground beneath her and the faint sounds of echoing water droplets.
Her eyes drifted down to her hand, now swathed in bandages, a makeshift remedy to staunch the bleeding. The cloth was stained with dried blood, she flexed her fingers cautiously testing the tightness of the bandages and feeling a dull ache beneath the wraps.
"So, you're finally awake," the miner's voice broke the silence, startling Dawn as she turned to face him. "I managed to clean the wound and wrap it up to stop the bleeding. You took quite a fall back there."
"How long was I out?" Dawn asked as she sat up.
"Not very long, maybe just 15 minutes," the man replied, startling Dawn.
"15 minutes!" she exclaimed, trying to get up. She winced in pain, almost causing her to fall back down before the miner caught her.
"Easy there, you're in no shape to be running around so hastily," he said, gently sitting her back down. "You need to take it slow." He contined, pacing back and forth before crossing his arms. "Before you went unconscious, you mentioned something about a Chimchar. Care to tell me what that was about?"
Dawn looked down, sadness evident in her eyes. "I... I made a mistake," she said, her voice trembling. "I pushed my Pokémon too far, and... he ran away from me. I'm a terrible trainer."
The miner's expressions softened, concern and empathy replacing his initial worry. "I see. You're a Pokémon Trainer, huh?" he asked, sitting beside her. "I've seen a lot of trainers go through tough times. It's never easy."
Dawn nodded, a tear escaping down her cheek. "I need to become stronger, a lot stronger. But... me and my Pokémon, we just lost against a friend of mine, and my Chimchar, he's just so... he can be so irritating sometimes, but I love him to death. But, I said some things I shouldn't have, and, well, it led me all the way here, I guess..."
The miner nodded understandingly before asking, "Why do you want to get stronger? You seem plenty strong already."
"No, I need to get way stronger. I need to become a much better trainer if I'm going to collect all eight gym badges and conquer the Sinnoh League," Dawn declared. "And that starts by defeating the Oreburgh City Gym Leader."
The miner's expressions shifted subtly, a hint of recognition in his eyes. "I see... so you aim to be the Champion then," he said thoughtfully. "Tell me, is it for your own sake, or for someone else's?"
Dawn was taken aback by the question. "Well I... what do you mean?"
The miner leaned back against the cave wall, studying her carefully. "Many trainers start their journey with grand dreams and high aspirations. Some do it for glory, some for the challenge, and others for personal reasons. Understanding why you're on this journey is crucial. It shapes how you train, how you connect with your Pokémon, and how you face challenges."
Dawn hesitated, then spoke, her voice thoughtful. "Growing up, I always felt like something was missing. I wanted more out of life. By getting stronger and becoming the Champion, I thought I could become someone everyone respects and loves, like Cynthia Shirona. That's the kind of person I want to be."
She fell silent, contemplating his words. The reasons she began her journey flashed through her mind.
"I started this journey because I wanted to be the best, to make everyone love me," she began slowly. "But now... now I see it's about more than just winning battles or earning badges. It's about my bond with my Pokémon, understanding them, and growing together. I want to prove that we can be strong, not just to the world, but to ourselves."
The miner smiled, a glimmer of approval in his eyes. "That's a good answer. Strength isn't just about power; it's about resilience, understanding, and connection. Remember that as you continue your journey."
Dawn watched as he stood up, picking up his pickaxe. "You will become strong... very strong," he said, his voice carrying a note of encouragement. He began walking towards the opposite direction, his footsteps echoing off the cave walls. "Good luck with the Oreburgh City Gym, and I hope you can defeat Roark and obtain the Coal Badge."
Dawn continued to watch him until he disappeared into the shadows of the cave. She slowly stood up, a sense of determination settling over her. "Right, now to find Chimchar," she said to herself, her resolve renewed as she prepared to face the challenges ahead.
Chimchar moved through the cavern with a careful, deliberate pace, each step echoing softly against the cold stone walls.
His small, nimble feet avoided loose rocks and puddles, navigating the uneven terrain with ease. The flickering flame on his tail cast dancing shadows, illuminating the rough, jagged surfaces of the cave.
As the small fire-type walked methodically, memories of the pain he had inflicted on his trainer flashed through his mind, haunting him.
Chimchar kept walking slowly, his steps heavy with guilt. He stumbled upon a puddle and saw his reflection staring back at him. Rage surged within him as he recalled his actions. His eyes narrowed, and he began stomping and punching at the puddle, splashing water everywhere in a futile attempt to erase the image.
As Chimchar swiped at the water, eyes watched him through the darkness of the cave. Suddenly, a streak of light shot through the shadows. Before he could even react, he was hit with a powerful uppercut to the chin.
The force was so strong that Chimchar spit up saliva and was launched towards the ceiling, smashing into a stalactite before landing hard on his back.
Groaning, Chimchar swiftly got up, performing a series of backflips to put distance between himself and his attacker. He landed in a battle stance, eyes locked on his opponent, a Machop.
The Machop flexed its muscles and declared, "Chop, Machop," before settling into its own battle stance.
From behind the Machop, a boy stepped into the dim light: a dusty kid with dirt-smudged cheeks partially obscuring his face. He wore an earring in one ear, and the other was covered in bandages. His shirt and suspenders looked as though they'd seen better days.
"I thought so, it was a Chimchar that girl from the other day was chasing after," the kid muttered. "Tell me, are you the Pokémon of a girl named Dawn?"
Chimchar took a step back, recognizing the boy as one of the thieves that tried to take him from Dawn earlier that day.
"Name's Benny, by the way," the boy introduced himself. "Your trainer caused me a lot of grief. She got me a beating from my boss," he said, his voice dripping with anger. "It's all her fault. If she had just let me take you, then all would be well. So, maybe now It's time to get payback. I wonder how she'd feel if she found her precious Pokémon ripped to shreds!"
Chimchar's tension grew and he began to growl as he prepared for the impending fight. His fists clenched tighter, flames flickering at the tips of his fingers as his fury built. The memory of Dawn's fear-stricken face fueling his resolve.
With a huge gust of wind, Chimchar suddenly appeared behind Machop before it could even react, his claws sharpened as he launched into a furious Fury Attack. Machop was slashed repeatedly, each strike landing with intense force.
"Don't just stand there and take it, use Rock Smash!" Benny yelled, his voice echoing through the cavern.
Machop swung a powerful punch. Chimchar managed to dodge, but the punch created a forceful gust of wind that sent the fire-type flying into some jagged rocks. The impact shattered the rocks into pieces.
"Char..." Chimchar groaned in pain, rubbing the back of his head. Before he could even get up, the ground beneath him shook violently, and suddenly, Machop's fist burst through the ground, delivering an uppercut to Chimchar's jaw with bone-crushing force..
"Yes, Dig landed!" Benny grinned wickedly. "That move's super-effective!"
Chimchar crashed into the ceiling, cracking it, before falling back down. He narrowly avoided landing on a sharp stalagmite by twisting mid-air, but as he did, Machop appeared behind him once again.
With another Rock Smash, Machop smashed Chimchar in the back of the head, the force of the hit reverberating through the cavern.
Chimchar was sent flying again. In mid-air, he shot out Embers, tiny flames scattered in all directions.
"What, those look totally weak. Machop, block it!" Benny growled.
Machop punched at the Ember flames, putting them out with little effort. Chimchar smashed into a wall, the impact taking out part of the cavern wall. A thick dust cloud kicked up, and rubble began to fall.
From the cloud of dust, Chimchar emerged, lunging at Machop with both claws extended in another futile attempt at Fury Attack. Machop skillfully dodged each swipe, his movements fluid and precise.
"Man, who would've thought that girl's Pokémon would be so pathetic," Benny laughed sinisterly. "Alright, Low Sweep, let's go!"
Machop swept at Chimchar's legs, knocking them out from under him and throwing him off balance.
"Now, end it with another Rock Smash!" Benny snarled.
Machop punched Chimchar in the gut with Rock Smash, slamming him into the ground with tremendous force. Chimchar screamed in pain as the ground shattered beneath him, the impact creating a crater.
Starly groaned in pain as he was struck in the chest with Headbutt, his body flung backwards into a jagged cluster of rocks, where he collided with a hard thud.
"Shi, Shinx!" Shinx cried out in worry as Lairon hurled a barrage of rocks in his direction.
Shinx cracked with electricity, unleashing a Thunder Shock that clashed with the incoming Rock Slide, enveloping the area in a swirling cloud of smoke. But before he could react, Lairon loomed behind him, its massive leg poised in mid-air.
Swiftly pivoting, Shinx attempted to evade, but Lairon's Stomp crashed down, slamming him forcefully into the unforgiving ground.
Lairon grinned menacingly, saliva oozing from its jaws as it pressed down on Shinx, squeezing him further with relentless force.
Suddenly, Starly darted forward with Quick Attack with a streak of light, striking Lairon swiftly. However, the impact only managed to rebound Starly, sending him crashing into the ground with a pained cry.
Seizing the opportunity, Shinx summoned a burst of electricity, electrocuting Lairon with Thunder Shock. Lairon roared in agony before retaliating with Bulldoze, its heavy foot shaking the earth violently, trapping Shinx beneath its weight.
In stark contrast, Starly stood unaffected by the ground-type attack, swiftly generating multiple afterimages with Double Team circling around the steel-type.
Lairon, confused by the illusion, unleashed a Rock Slide towards each image, but the real Starly deftly dodged with Quick Attack, racing toward Shinx and grasping his tail firmly with its beak, swiftly carrying him towards safety.
Barely conscious, Shinx narrowed eyes mistook Starly for Lairon in his dazed state, triggering a surge of electricity that inadvertently shocked Starly with Thunder Shock.
"S-Starrrr!" Starly cried out in pain releasing Shinx before collapsing unconscious to the ground.
Shinx shook his head, realizing his mistake, just as the slow, ominous footsteps of Lairon echoed in the cavern. The metallic creature's laughter rang out, echoing with a menacing and almost nightmarish tone.
Shinx trembled visibly, his expression betraying deep fear as he faced the daunting presence of an opponent seemingly impossible to defeat or escape from.
Chimchar, battered and gasping for air, leaned against the damp cave wall. His chest heaved with exhaustion, and sweat mingled with the dirt of his fur.
The echo of footsteps approached, slow and deliberate. Machop advanced from the shadows, muscles tense and ready for the next assault. The fighting-type winded his arm, the sinews tightening audibly as cracked his neck in anticipation.
Benny, standing at the edge of the clearing, wore a smirk that feigned arrogance. "I thought you'd be more of a challenge," he taunted, his voice laced with disdain. "I haven't even had Machop for very long, and this is the best you can do? Pitiful."
Anger flickered in Chimchar's eyes like sparks from a smoldering flame. Summoning his resolve, he launched himself forward with a sudden burst of agility. Flames erupted from his body swirling into a blazing vortex of fury.
Benny's smirk faltered for a moment as Chimchar unleashed his Flame Wheel attack. "Machop, Vital Throw!" He barked, quickly recovering his composure.
As Chimchar hurtled towards Machop, the fighting-type braced himself. With impeccable timing, Machop caught Chimchar mid-spin, the impact sending Machop skidding back across the rough terrain.
Sparks sizzled at his feet, and clouds of dust billowed around them. Machop gritted his teeth, muscles straining against Chimchar's momentum as held the fire-type in place.
With a powerful swing, Machop hurled Chimchar towards a cluster of rocks. The air whistled past Chimchar as he hurled towards the unforgiving stone, his body poised for impact.
However, in a sudden blur, Machop vanished from the soaring Pokémon's line of sight, reappearing behind Chimchar with startling speed behind the airborne Pokémon.
"Now, Low Sweep!" Benny commanded with a triumphant gleam in his eye.
Machop's leg blurred into motion, a graceful arc that struck Chimchar mid-air. The force of the blow dove Chimchar downwards, slamming him into the ground with bone-jarring force. Chimchar cried out in pain, the impact leaving him dazed and struggling for breath.
"Chop, Chop!" Machop's cry pierced the air, its voice a guttural growl. Reaching down, Machop seized Chimchar by the throat, his grip unyielding as his opponent struggled desperately to break free.
Chimchar's legs kicked frantically, but Machop's grasp was relentless. The fire-type Pokémon gasped for air, his vision swimming as Machop's fangs gleamed in the dim light of the cave. With a final display of dominance, Machop tossed Chimchar aside like a discarded toy.
Chimchar hit the ground hard, the impact driving his breath from his lungs. He lay there, barely conscious, his body bruised and battered from continuous attacks.
Benny crossed his arms and snickered, "You disappoint me, like I said, I was expecting a lot more from you, but you're weak, just like that Dawn girl."
At the mere mention of his trainer's name, Chimchar slowly staggered to his feet, his breath ragged and eyes burning with determination.
Machop watched in disbelief at Chimchar's futile struggle, a sneer of contempt curling its lips. It shook its head, almost amused by the defiance it faced.
Benny's smile widened, "Now, let's end this with one final Rock Smash!"
Machop tensed, muscles coiling with power as it prepared for the decisive blow. Its eyes narrowed with focused intensity as it locked onto its prey.
Chimchar, realizing resistance was meaningless, took a hesitant step backward, resignation etched on his face. He glanced around, searching for any way out of the impending finisher.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed in the cave. Dawn appeared, sprinting towards them with her arms outstretched, her expression
Benny's eyes widened with excitement at the sight of Dawn's arrival. His smirk grew broader, relishing the twist her appearance brought to the fight.
Chimchar's eyes widened in horror as he saw Dawn rushing towards them. What could the vengeful Benny have in mind when faced with Dawn directly?
As Machop lunged forward, its massive frame barreling toward Dawn, the cavern held its breath once more. But instead of aiming its devastating Rock Smash at the girl, Machop abruptly pivoted, its huge hand arcing through the air in a brutal slap across Dawn's face.
The sharp crack of flesh meeting flesh resounded through the cavern, followed by a chilling silence. Dawn's eyes widened briefly in shock before her body went limp, collapsing to the ground in a motionless heap. Her cheek landed softly in a puddle, sending ripples across its surface.
Chimchar's eyes went wide, his pupils dilating with shock. "C-Chimchar!" he cried out, his voice breaking as he watched his trainer knocked-out.
His legs felt like they were rooted to the ground, a cold wave of fear and shock washing over him. He couldn't believe what he was seeing—his brave, kind-hearted trainer lying unconscious and vulnerable.
"Shame you knocked her out," Benny complained, his voice dripping with disappointment. "Seeing as she was here, I wanted her to watch as we tore Chimchar in pieces. I guess we can't always have nice things."
Chimchar stared at his trainer in shock, his heart pounding. Suddenly, Machop rushed in front of him, delivering a powerful punch to his chest with Rock Smash.
Machop smirked, stepping back with a look of confident satisfaction as Chimchar's head hung low and his arms dropped to his sides, though he remained standing.
"Pfft," Benny scoffed. "Still standing despite being unconscious. Got to hand it to the little pest—weak as he is, he's resilient."
Suddenly, steam began to emit from Chimchar's body, rising in wisps that gave him an otherworldly aura. Machop's smirk faded, replaced by a look of surprise and confusion as he watched the steam intensify.
The wisps of steam began to reach the cavern ceiling, and a swirl of fire began to surround Chimchar, spiraling upward in a fierce column of flames. The heat and light from the fire cast dancing shadows across the walls, and the temperature in the room soared.
Benny took a few steps back, a bead of sweat trinkling down his forehead. "What the heck is going on? How is that possible!?" he exclaimed, fear in his voice.
Chimchar's claws began to sharpen and extend, glinting menacingly in the firelight. His teeth elongated into sharp fangs, giving him a feral, terrifying appearance. The steam and flames around him grew more intense, filling the air with a sense of impending doom.
Slowly, Chimchar lifted his head, his pupils glowing a fierce crimson red. His eyes blazed with an intense, fiery determination, and the sheer pressure emanating from his transformed state was palpable. Both Machop and Benny felt a crushing weight pressing down on them.
Chimchar's gaze locked onto Machop with an intensity that could melt steel. The air around him crackled with energy as his tail flame blazed brighter and more intensely than ever before, casting an eerie glow that illuminated through the entire cavern.
Machop, who had once stood with confident arrogance, now found himself frozen under Chimchar's glare. As Chimchar took a step forward, the ground beneath him cracked from the sheer pressure of his energy.
A solitary drop of water hung precariously from the tip of a stalactite, shimmering in the fiery light of Chimchar's tail flame. It gathered slowly, swelling until gravity pulled it free. In the instant it began its descent, time seemed to stretch. The droplet fell, slicing through the heated air, and just as it splashed against the ground, creating a tiny ripple in the dirt, Chimchar appeared behind Machop.
His movement was a blur, faster than the eye could follow. One moment he was glaring at Machop, the next he was positioned just behind his opponent, his presence marked only by the sudden gust of wind and the faintest echo of a whoosh.
Machop's eyes widened in terror as he processed his opponent's newly awakened state. Instinctively, he leaped away, desperate to put some distance between himself and his fearsome foe.
Chimchar pulled his head back, flames crackling in his mouth, before releasing an immensely powerful Ember. The fiery projectiles surged forth with a ferocity that was unmatched, each one blazing with raw, destructive energy.
"D-dodge it, Machop!" Benny screamed, his voice cracking with fear.
Machop sprang to the side, barely escaping the scorching Ember. From the lingering flames, Chimchar emerged in a ferocious Flame Wheel, his body a whirlwind of fire and fury. He collided with Machop with immense force, sending him tumbling across the ground. Debris flew in all directions as Machop smashed into a nearby boulder, shattering it as if it was glass.
Chimchar growled menacingly, charging on all fours like a beast unleashed. Machop scrambled to his feet, assuming a karate stance, but his trembling betrayed his fear.
The crazed fire-type let out a deafening growl, the force of which created a shockwave that sent Machop soaring through the air. He managed to redirect himself midair, landing heavily against the wall.
"Err, use Rock Smash!" Benny shouted, his fear palpable.
Machop rushed forward, arm poised for a devastating Rock Smash. But before it could land the blow, Chimchar's fiery hand grasped its arm. The pain was excruciating, like being burned by a thousand third-degree burns.
With a fierce snarl, Chimchar extended his other arm and slashed Machop across the face. Machop's eyes widened in shock and pain as he was twirled around and hurled into the air. He crashed headfirst into the ceiling before plummeting to the ground, landing face-first into the dirt with a heavy thud.
The battlefield fell silent, save for the crackling of Chimchar's flames, which burned relentlessly.
As Lairon approached, its heavy steps reverberated through the rocky terrain, sending small pebbles skittering along its path.
Shinx, cornered with Starly behind him, stood defiantly yet fearfully. His fur bristled with residual electricity from his Thunder Shock, casting faint sparks into the air.
Starly, recovering from the electric shock, stood tense and watchful behind Shinx. His feathers were ruffled, and he clutched a small stone in his talons, a futile defense against the hulking Lairon.
As Lairon prepared to unleash another Rock Slide, the cavern around it seemed to respond. Rocks and boulders began to form around Lairon, swirling and floated in air.
Shinx's eyes widened with urgency as he realized the certain doom Starly faced if he was hit by the dreadful move. With a swift and decisive movement, he flicked his tail, sending Starly toward the exit with a gasp of surprise.
"S-Star!" Starly gasped out in shock, confused by Shinx's actions.
"Shinx! Shinx!" Shinx barked urgently, signaling Starly to flee. He knew that protecting his companion was paramount, even if it meant facing Lairon alone.
Pivoting to face Lairon, Shinx's stance became more aggressive, fur bristling with electricity as he growled defiantly at the approaching steel behemoth.
Then, the wall beside them crumbled and shattered, revealing an enormous Onix that emerged with a thunderous presence that commanded the entire space. Its colossal body coiled and uncoiled, serpent-like, its rock-hard exterior gleaming faintly in the dim light of the cave.
Onix's massive head, adorned with a crown of jagged rocks, nearly touched the cavern ceiling, emphasized its imposing stature. Its eyes, like fiery orbs set deep within its rocky face, glowed with a mix of ancient wisdom and power, fixed upon Lairon with an intense glare.
From atop the Onix, a miner emerged, his head poking out as he observed Shinx and Starly. "Interesting find," he muttered, addressing the Pokémon. "I was hunting for a Chimchar, but stumbling upon Pokémon as rare as you two in Oreburgh Caves is quite the surprise. Are you both also with that girl?"
Realizing the type-advantage, Lairon soared forward with Iron Tail, but before it could strike Onix reacted swiftly. With a powerful bind attack, Onix ensnared Lairon midair, causing the steel-type to screech in pain and surprise.
"Now, Slam!" the miner commanded. With mighty force, Onix slammed its massive tail into the ground, creating a shockwave that shook the entire cavern. Rocks cascaded from the ceiling, dust and smoke billowed, and the ground quaked under the impact.
Shinx and Starly watched in awe as the scene unfolded before their eyes, astonished by Onix's overwhelming power.
Lairon, now visibly shaken and intimidated, turned tail and dashed away in fear, fleeing from the overwhelming force of Onix.
"Good job, Onix. Come here," the miner praised his Pokémon, patting its rocky hide affectionately as it cooed contentedly.
Turning his attention to Shinx and Starly, the miner's demeanor softened. "Well, are you two alright?" he asked, genuine concern coloring his tone.
Machop, battered and bruised, crashed into the ground from a fierce blow. He struggled to his feet, his body covered in scratches, a black eye forming, and a burn on his arm searing with pain. Despite his injuries, he attempted to steady himself, but his legs trembled under the strain, almost giving way beneath him.
Meanwhile, Chimchar advanced slowly, his previous menacing aura now amplified by the intense glow of his tail. Each step the fire-type took seemed deliberate and calculated, sending a chill down Benny's spine as watched with growing dread,
The boy's panic escalated as he scanned his surroundings for an escape route. His eyes fell upon Dawn's unconscious form not far away. A sinister smile crept across Benny's face as a devious plan formed in his mind.
"Machop, use Dig, remember, there are other ways to harm Chimchar without attacking him," Benny commanded, his voice dripping with malice.
Catching his drift, Machop obeyed, disappearing into the ground in a whirl of dirt and rocks. Chimchar, sensing danger, scanned the area for Machop's reappearance. Just as he turned, he heard a commotion behind him.
Whipping around, Chimchar's eyes widened in shock as he saw Machop resurface, holding Dawn by her shirt with a chop poised threateningly at her neck. Dawn, still groggy from being unconscious, looked up in confusion, her eyes locking onto her starter's blazing form.
"Chim... Char?" she whispered, her voice filled with astonishment and fear as she didn't recognize the beast she was staring at.
Chimchar froze, torn between his intense desire to protect his trainer and the fear of what Machop might do. Benny's voice pierced through tension, his tone dripping with malice.
"I don't know where this power you've awakened came from," Benny sneered, "but it doesn't matter. Unless you want to say goodbye to your precious trainer, you'll surrender, now!"
The standoff was unbearable, the cave filled with an oppressive silence broken only by the faint sound of Chimchar's heavy breathing. Suddenly, Chimchar tensed, his determination solidifying.
In a split-second, he reappeared behind Machop with lightning speed, claws extended in a furious Fury Attack that caught his opponent completely off guard.
Machop cried out in pain as Chimchar's rapid strikes overwhelmed him, forcing him to release Dawn from his grasp, the girl falling back unconscious as her face kissed the cave floor. Benny, enraged by Machop's failure, recalling him to his Poké Ball with a frustrated shout.
"Darn it, you useless Pokémon!" Benny cursed, his voice trembling with panic. He then turned to Chimchar, his fear tangible as he faced the enraged fire starter. With a quick retreat, he fled from the cavern his screams echoing off the walls, pleading for mercy.
Chimchar, the red glow in his eyes fading back to their normal hue, staggered slightly. Exhaustion washed over him like a tidal wave, his body trembling from the strain of unleashing such power he didn't even know existed within him.
The Chimp Pokémon glanced over at Dawn, his trainer and friend, a sense of sadness washed over him. Slowly, he began to walk towards her, but exhaustion weighed heavily on his body.
With each step, Chimchar's legs trembled until finally, he collapsed, unable to walk any further.
Using his head and sheer willpower, Chimchar pulled himself forward towards Dawn, his body dragging behind him. He reached her side and gently laid down beside her, his head resting next to hers on opposite sides.
With great care, Chimchar slowly extended a quivering hand, cupping Dawn's cheek.
That was... well, there's a lot I could say, I don't know where to even start.
Firstly, most of you guys may not catch it, but the ending I went for here is a parallel to chapter 2 where after Dawn saved Chimchar from drowning, she laid beside him.
As for Chimchar, I know he was getting his butt kicked there badly for a second, but I want to make it apparent he wasn't at his full strength at the start of the fight, his emotional turmoil made him weaker, if he was battling in his regular state, he would have put up a much greater fight.
Oh yeah, and Chimchar's "transformation" I promise will be explained soon enough, though some of you may already have some idea of what it is. Anyways, the next chapter will cover Dawn's bout with the Gym Leader, so stay tuned, and please, leave reviews if you're enjoying the story so far.
