Brand New Powers
It had to be the best day of Harry Potters young life. He was away from his 'relatives', at least for now, he had found out Magic was real and that he was a Wizard and now he was shopping for his Wizarding school supplies with Hagrid the friendly giant. The boy was practically skipping as he walked down Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Not even the rude boy he had met in the robe shop could get him down. It didn't take the two long to finish gathering his school things, including a snowy owl Hagrid brought him as a birthday present. They had just got Harrys wand and were heading back towards the Leaky Cauldron for something to eat when Harry saw a small shop tucked away in a small side alley.
"Hey Hagrid, whats that shop?" asked Harry, pointing at the establishment.
Hagrid looked and frowned at the sight.
"I don't know," he said, "I've never noticed it before."
That spiked Harrys curiosity. Hagrid seemed like the type to know everything that their was to know about Diagon Alley so for him to not know about something was worth investigating. He moved away from Hagrid, ignoring his calls to come back, and approached the shop, pushing open the door. As soon as he stepped over the threshold, he was hit by the smell of burning incense. It wasn't overwhelming, but it was extremely strong. The room was filled with shelves, all filled with various types of herbs, spices and incense sticks, in addition to stone tablets, medals, weapons, armour and books of all shapes and sizes.
The small boy curiously made his way through the stacks, examining some of the items on sale, including a stone tablet depicting a man chained to a rock with various sun images around it, a blue book that looked like a manual with the words 'Angel Player' written on it and a large book with an S emblazoned on the cover.
"Welcome," said a voice, making Harry jump and spin around to face the source.
At the back of the room was a low counter that stretched across the room, behind which sat a man clad in a pair of black slacks and a white shirt with a black waistcoat and a tie and an eyepatch over his left eye. His hair was pure white with a pair of black streaks going from his temples to the back of his head and his one visible eye was golden yellow. Despite his hair colour, he appeared young, only about 19 years old or so.
"How may I help you young man?" asked the shopkeeper.
"Just browsing," said Harry.
"Well then, let me know if you see anything you like Mr Potter," said the man, "My name is Keeper by the way."
"How do you know my name?" said Harry.
Keeper smiled.
"You'll find that very few people in Wizarding Britain don't know your name Mr. Potter," said the white haired teen.
"Oh yeah, famous," muttered Harry, "I forgot."
Keeper chuckled.
"Indeed," he said.
The BWL continued to wander around the shop, pausing to examine some objects that seemed interesting. As he walked past the counter, the breath of his passing caught a deck of cards sat near Keepers elbow, causing the top card to come off and float to his feet. The young Wizard picked it up and saw that it was a Tarot card depicting a tower with lightning striking it and flames and people falling from the windows.
"Hmm, thats interesting," said Keeper as Harry placed the card back on the table.
"Whats interesting?" asked Harry, "It was an accident."
"There are no accidents when it comes to telling the future," said Keeper, "For those who have the gift at least. These cards were made by me, infused with my power, meaning that they truly do have power."
"So what does it mean?" asked Harry.
"The Tower is a symbol of destruction and danger, whether that means that you will bring them or be affected by them remains to be seen," said Keeper, "It is also an omen of change and the destruction of the Status Quo."
"Sounds ominous," said Harry.
"Not really, this backwards world really needs a good kick up the rear," said Keeper, "However, if you are going to be the one to provide said kick, your going to need some help."
He tapped a finger on the counter in thought for a moment, before snapping his fingers and moving around the counter, heading to the book section of the shop. Two minutes later he was back with a book. Unlike most of the books Harry had seen in the Wizarding World thus far, this one looked like a typical textbook from a Muggle school. On the front was a photograph of a person standing in the middle of an electrical discharge and the title proclaimed 'Unique Sensory Perceptions of Electric-type Espers and their Applications'.
"Whats this?" asked Harry after reading the title.
"A book on Electrokinesis," said Keeper, "Elementals are quite rare in the Magical World, but that's mainly because finding instruction on the use of Elemental Powers is almost impossible. As such, they are only noticed when a Natural appears, leading to the incorrect belief that Elemental powers are passed down. In reality, anyone can learn to be an Elemental with enough work. That book will teach you how to harness the element of Lightning."
"Awesome!" said Harry, staring down at the book in his hands.
"That'll be 10 galleons," said Keeper, pressing a few buttons on his till.
"What? But I thought you said you wanted to help me!"
"I did," said Keeper, "But I'm also a shopkeeper, I have to make a profit."
Harry grumbled, but handed over the required amount of gold.
"Thank you."
Harry walked to the door, his new book under his arm. There was a flash of light and Harry found himself standing next to Hagrid on the street like nothing had happened.
"Hmm, looks like we've got enough time for a bite to eat before we get you home," said the Giant as if Harry hadn't ran off into a random shop.
Harry blinked in confusion and looked in the direction of the shop, only to see a solid wall where the alley had been. Harry tilted his head in confusion, wondering if he had just had a very strange dream.
When Harry arrived back at Number 4, he immediately headed to his room where he started unpacking his books, intending to get a head start on the material. As he did, he found an extra parcel in his bag and, upon unwrapping it, found the textbook he had bought from the strange shop he had convinced himself he had dreamed up. Eager to see what the book had in store for him, Harry opened the book and began to read.
First Year, the Troll
Hermione Granger sniffed as she blew her nose for what felt like the 1000 time that day. She had spent the last few hours locked in the toilet after being insulted once again by Ronald, the Prince of Prats. She knew it was stupid, she was well used to the insults after all, but the Red-heads comments about having no friends hit hard due to the truth they held. She truly did have no friends. She probably would have spent more time locked in the stall had her stomach not chosen that moment to growl loudly.
She hadn't eaten since breakfast, having been too upset to go to lunch and now she was starving. The bookworm sighed and slapped her cheeks, before unlocking the door and stepping out of the stall. As she did, she became aware of a rather unpleasant smell that filled the room. The stalls of the bathroom were enchanted to keep unpleasant odors in or out, which is why Hermione wasn't aware of the Troll that was standing in the room. At least, that was Hermione's only explanation as to how she had missed something coming into the room that smelt worse than a sewer.
The Mountain Troll and the Student stared at one another for a moment, before the Troll let out a loud roar and raised its club, taking a swing at the girl. Hermione quickly dropped to the ground, dodging the swing of the club that turned the stalls into so much kindling, before rolling out of the way as the Troll took a second swing, aiming to squish her into paste. Hermione inwardly thanked her mother for insisting on teaching her a bit of self defence as she rolled to her feet, just in time to dodge another swing. The door chose that moment to slam open, making her jump and providing enough of a distraction for the Troll to nail her with his club, sending the bookworm crashing into the wall.
With Harry, a few minutes earlier
Harry was following Percy Weasley back to the Common Room as ordered by the Headmaster, ignoring the annoying brat next to him, one Ronald Weasley who had somehow gotten it into his head that he and Harry were best friends, despite the fact the Electromancer couldn't stand the lazy redhead. Not only was he extremely annoying, but he was also a small minded bully who insulted and belittled anyone even slightly different to him.
Suddenly, Harry froze as he realized that one of his classmates didn't know about the troll. Hermione Granger, Gryffindors resident bookworm, had been in the girls bathroom all day after a particular spiteful comment from Ron. Now, Harry wasn't the type to put himself in harm's way for others, especially if he didn't know them, but he also wasn't the type to just let someone die and, despite her bossy nature, he actually quite liked the intelligent young bookworm.
His decision made, Harry slipped away from the Gryffindors, joining the Hufflepuffs going the other way, slipped down a deserted side corridor, and hurried off toward the girls' bathroom. He had just turned the corner when he heard quick footsteps behind them. Harry slipped into an alcove with a large Gryphon statue and peeped out between its wings. A moment later, Snape hustled past, heading in the direction of the Third Floor.
"Huh, interesting," muttered Harry to himself.
Once Snape was gone, Harry slipped out of his hiding place and ran silently down the hall towards the Girls Bathroom. As he approached the Charms corridor where the bathroom Hermione had been holed up in all day was located, a foul stench reached his nostrils, making him gag. It smelled like some unholy mixture of old socks and the kind of public toilet no one seems to clean. The Lightning user looked in the direction of the smell and saw the source. It was a horrible sight, twelve feet tall, its skin was a dull, granite gray, its great lumpy body like a boulder with its small bald head perched on top like a coconut. It had short legs thick as tree trunks with flat, horny feet. It was holding a huge wooden club, which dragged along the floor because its arms were so long. The troll stopped next to a doorway and peered inside. It waggled its long ears, making up its tiny mind, then slouched slowly into the room.
Harry was tempted to run down their and lock it in, but a quick look at the sign above the door revealed that it was the girls bathroom Harry had been heading towards.
"Oh, thats just perfect," groaned Harry, before the sound of smashing wood and porcelain reached his ears, "Well, here goes nothing."
He ran to the door and slammed it open, just in time to see Hermione get hit by the Trolls club and slam into the wall with a loud crack. Harry took the situation in in less than a second, his eyes panning over the shattered cubicles and plumbing, the girl embedded in a large hole in the wall and the Troll gearing up for another swing that would likely turn the bookworm into jam. Harry narrowed his eyes and flicked his wrist, sending a bolt of electricity into the Troll. The hulking brute let out a yelp and stood up straight.
"Oh crap," muttered Harry as the Troll turned to face him, a look of rage on its stupid face.
Harry dove to the side, just barely dodging the creatures club as it swung wildly at him. Harry rolled back to his feet and flicked another lightning bolt at the Troll, only for the attack to do little more than irritate the monster, despite the fact their was enough volts in the attack to power London for three days.
"That thing has some really thick skin," muttered Harry as he dodged another swing.
The Troll advanced on Harry and raised its club to smash the Electrokinetic into goo. Before it could bring its club down though, it let out a roar of pain as its leg was cut into from behind. Harry looked and was more than a little surprised to see Hermione stood behind the monster looking like she hadn't just been smashed into a wall with what appeared to be a long sword sticking out of her sleeve. The Troll turned to the more obvious threat, being the one to injure it, and swung its club, only for it to seemingly phase through Hermione as she dashed to the side, leaving an after image behind. The Troll blinked stupidly at the empty space under its club. Harry took advantage of the beast's distraction and took a running jump, grabbing onto the Trolls head, before channelling as much power as he could into the Trolls brainbox through its over-large ears.
The beast immediately started thrashing around as Harry leaped clear. After a few seconds, the Trolls thrashings stopped and it slumped to the ground, steam issuing from its ears, twitched occasionally. Silence filled the room for a moment, before Hermione spoke up.
"Well, that was interesting."
15 minutes later
Harry and Hermione were sat opposite one another in the Common Room, having been escorted back by Professor McGonagall after she and a few other professors had turned up to investigate the noise the Troll was making. Both preteens were staring at one another, waiting for the other to speak.
"So, want to tell me how you survived being smacked into the wall by the Troll?" asked Harry, "Or how you moved fast enough to leave after-images?"
"Only if you tell me how you can use electricity like you did," said Hermione, "That sort of Elemental magic should be beyond a First Year."
The two stared at one another for a moment longer, before Harry sighed.
"Trade?" he asked, "I'll tell you and you tell me?"
Hermione nodded and got to her feet.
"That sounds fair, let me just go and get something."
Harry nodded and watched as the girl made her way up to the Girls dorms, only to return a few moments later with something that looked extreamly out of place in a magic school.
"I thought technology didn't work in Hogwarts?" asked Harry as Hermione sat down next to him and opened the laptop.
"Normally it doesn't," said Hermione, "But this ones been modified so that it runs on magic."
"Alright, so what does this have to do with your powers?" asked Harry.
Hermione ignored the question in favour of booting up the computer and opening a program titled Angel Player. The program opened, revealing a blue screen with spinning wheels in the back ground, the programs name and version, before a window opened up. The window showed a wire framed projection of a female figure with a list of options at the side.
"A computer program?" asked Harry.
"Watch," said Hermione, holding up her right hand, "Guard Skill, Hand Sonic."
Blue energy appeared from her wrist, before solidifying into the same blade Harry had seen her use against the Troll. As this happened, one of the options on the screen lit up and the wire fraim image gained a blade on its right hand. Harry read the highlighted option.
"Hand Sonic?" he muttered, "So your making abilities using this computer program?"
Hermione nodded and dismissed her blade.
"That about sums it up," said the bushy haired girl, "I have no idea how it works and nothing I've read gives me any indication theres anything like it anywhere else. Alright, I've spilt my secret, now its your turn."
Harry nodded and got to his feet, rushing upstairs to grab his book on Electrokinesis, before heading back down.
"I learnt from this," said Harry, putting the book on the table.
"Hmm, interesting," muttered Hermione as she flicked through it, "Where did you get this?"
"From a shop in Diagon Alley that disappeared once I left," said Harry.
"Wait, a disappearing shop?" asked Hermione, "And when you left it seemed like no time had past?"
"Thats right," said Harry.
"And the owner went by Keeper?"
"How did you know?" asked Harry, surprised.
"Because thats where I bought Angel Player," said Hermione, "He also said something about me finding this being ironic for some reason."
"Hmm, I wonder if anyone else has been in that shop?" asked Harry, thoughtfully.
Down at the other end of the contrary, in a shop invisible to all but those meant to find it, Keeper sat before a crystal ball, his face lit in its purple glow as he gazed into its depths. His eyepatch had been removed, revealing a glowing, blue eye with a cross shaped pupil and the black streaks in his hair had been replaced by a pair of horns.
"Oh, it looks like the Joker and the Angel have met," he said, "Soon, all the pieces will be in place. The Joker, the Angel, the Seer, the Knight, the Queen and the Dragon. Soon, all will be ready."
And thats the end of this entry to the Vault! If anyone can guess who the other pieces Keeper was talking about are they get cookies! I hope you all enjoyed this entry and will leave me a review!
