"Are you sure this is the right thing to do?" a beautiful red-headed woman asked her husband as she looked down at the one year old boy in her arms.
"Yes, it is Lily," said the man beside her, "Dumbledore said that this was the best option. Otherwise he could get jealous of Alice and fall to the Dark."
"I know James," said Lily, "But I'm not comfortable about leaving him with my sister."
"Don't worry about it Lily," said James, "What's the worst that could happen?"
The dark haired man took the sleeping boy from his wife's arms and laid him on the doorstep, casting a warming charm over him and placing a letter in his blankets. That done, the Potters walked away, leaving their oldest child behind without a single backward glance.
"How very predictable," said a voice as a figure appeared from the shadows, "It seems that even when the parents survive, the boy still ends up here."
The figure stepped into the light of the streetlamp directly outside of Number 4, revealing a twelve year old girl with long, blond hair tied into pigtails with black ribbons and red eyes. She was clad in a Gothic Lolita fashion, with a frilly black gown and jacket, red ribbon bow tie, a red bat symbol design cross from the front to the back on her dress, another red cross on her shawl and bottom half, high heeled black boots with a red cross, and a red ribbon on her right ankle. In her hand was a black umbrella with a cats head on the top and floating beside her was a small, red batlike creature.
"I almost feel sorry for him," continued the girl, "I know what he shall go through here and, even without the Prophecy looming over him, he will never have a good life. The old Puppet Master and his cronies shall see to that."
"So, what will you do?" asked a voice from the shadows.
"Aevum, what are you doing here?" asked the girl, glancing at a patch of shadow where a single, golden eye seemed to be floating.
"The boy is a Destined Hero," said the being in the shadows, "I make it a habit to keep an eye on those with Prophecies hanging over them, even those made by individuals whose foresight is questionable at best."
"Ah yes, the Demon who aids the Hero," said the girl, "But that does not explain your pressonce. You could just as easily watch this life unfold from Clepsydra rather than come here in person."
"True, but you being here represents a new set of possible futures," said Aevum, "The choice you make will determine the future of this timeline. Should you leave now, things will continue as normal with very little deviation, but that is just one potential future. So tell me, Rachel Alucard, what are you going to do?"
Rachel looked down at the child in the basket, a thoughtful look on her face. She knew what she should do, leave the boy and allow time to continue on as normal, but something stayed her hand. She knew what the child would go through, having seen it many times as time continued to be reset and it was nearly always the same. If she left the child, he would be put through 10 years of suffering at the hands of his relatives, before being turned into a weapon by that manipulative old man. He would never know true happiness or love, even after being reunited with his parents who had just abandoned him. But what could she do?
She could give the child power, but that would likely just make things worse or give birth to a monster worse than Terumi and Riddle combined. Or she could take him with her and raise him herself. As she considered her options, she didn't notice the hidden being in the shadows begin to grin, his fang filled maw appearing in the darkness as clearly as his eye as he watched the timeline begin to change, threads unraveled and rewound themselves and the future drastically changed, becoming clearer with every passing second as Rachel drew closer to her decision.
Eventually, Rachel let out a huff and turned away from the child in the basket to glare at the grinning shadow.
"You already know my decision, don't you?" she asked.
"Naturally," said the still grinning Observer, "I may require a focus to see great distances into the future with any accuracy, but I can still view the timeline as a whole. Your decision has changed the future of the entire planet and practically everyone you know, past, present and future. However, the future is always in flux and I don't know whether that change will be positive or negative. One things for sure though, things are going to get very interesting!"
The eye and grin faded as Aevums laughter echoed around the street. Rachel sighed at the antics of the other Observer, before turning back to the sleeping baby on the doorstep.
"I cannot believe I'm doing this," she muttered as she reached down and lifted the basket of the doorstep.
"Mistress, are you sure this is wise?" asked a voice coming from her parasol.
"Not in the slightest Nago," said Rachel, "But...I can't just leave him here. Its strange, but I feel that this decision is the best I have ever made."
She turned and walked away, leaving the barely formed Wards around the house to collapse with barely a whimper.
Down in the depths of the Ministry, in the fabled Hall of Prophecy, one of the many orbs that held visions of the future cracked, before shattering into a cloud of glittering dust as it was rendered worthless. In a realm separate from time, three old women watched as the tapestry of Fate began to change before their very eyes, lives shifting and changing in response to a single decision, even as the sound of manic laughter echoed across the timeless landscape from a huge tower shaped like an hourglass in the distance.
And I think I'm going to end it there. I know its short, but I can't think thats as good a place as any to end it. I don't really have anything else to say except please leave me a review!
