And we're back for another answer to DZ2's Mortality and Reality, rules below:
DZ2's 'Mortality and Reality' Challenge
Plot: In the UK, Harry was seen and hailed as the ONLY survivor of the AK, right? So that makes him someone special, does it? Well what about the rest of the world? Surely he's not the only worldwide survivor of near/instant death, is he?
Rules: Grey, Dark or Evil Harry
At least one other country/continent MUST have more than one other person/wizard/sorcerer that has survived the AK
Love CANNOT be the method to their survival, but, unlike Harry, they are also NOT famous for it either (in other words, there are ways to survive it and only the backwards world of the British Magical world believes that it's a reason for fame.)
Harry MUST gain some sort of tuition in magic and/or survival arts from these others
The British Magical Community, including Harry's friends, MUST see these others as Dark Magic users
All pairings are welcome EXCEPT Harems
Guidelines: Dark-Lord Harry
The ability to survive death is somehow tied to the Peverells (Master-of-Death)
Crossovers
In the 'other' communities, their 'death' isn't just by the AK (This could tie into the crossover option)
Slash
Harry learns about more than just surviving his 'death'
Forbidden: Harry accepting that he's the only one to survive a brush with death
Harems
Harry's friends (namely Ron and Hermione) accepting that he's learning about these 'different' sorts of magic
As a result of learning about this art/skill/power, Harry CANNOT be proud/arrogant concerning his BWL status
Love as the reason for survival
Other than that, it's up to you...
I don't really have any plans for a crossover this time through. Oh, I'm also advancing the timeline to the not so distant future so I can play around with some technology. Enjoy!
Esper End
Magic is an extremely strange thing. It can manifest in hundreds of different ways depending on its master's environment, knowledge, beliefs and hundreds of other factors. It also has an unfortunate tendency of poisoning communities and dragging them down into isolationism, xenophobia, ignorance and stagnation, although that might just be Human nature. The worst example of this would be the British Magical World who were so utterly entrenched in their perceived superiority to the larger World that they failed to notice that most of the rest of the Magical World was dragging itself out of the mire of the middle aged outlooks that had poisoned it for the past few hundred years with the aid of the most recent group of Magicals who had emerged.
Most Magical styles had been founded and developed hundreds of years ago and the societies that used them showed it, but this most recent one was different. Instead of using magic to bend reality to the users will, often breaking the Laws of Physics in the process, it worked within the boundaries of Physics, resulting in users who were capable of so much more power than their counterparts. Oh sure, they weren't capable of Transfiguration or Conjuration to the same level as Wizards and their more esoteric and household skills were non existent, but who needs the ability to tidy up with magic when you have a perfectly good pair of hands and the ability to rain down lightning, summon monstrous tornados and create immense blaze capable of devouring entire cities?
This group of Magicals, named Espers, were so powerful that they turned the entire Magical World on its head and drove them out of the Darkness. Well, mostly. Britain was still holding out and refusing to acknowledge the Espers as anything other than Dark Creatures, despite the fact they were just using a completely different branch of Magic.
However, you didn't come here to listen to a trist on Esper and Magical interaction, you came for explosions, lightning bolts and Harry Potter learning something new to kick the crap out of everyone's favorite snake. Alright, lets begin the story properly.
Our story begins shortly after Voldemorts defeat in a small town in Germany where a group of Death Eaters had stopped to gather supplies for their journey to find their banished Master. And by gather, I of course mean steal from the Mundane. Unfortunately for the Death Eaters, they had forgotten that they weren't in England anymore where they could wave some gold under the nose of the Ministry and get off scot free. To make matters even worse for them, anyone who bore the Dark Mark and strayed out of England ended up with an immediate target painted on their back from the ESP, the Esper Security Patrol, a group belonging to the ICW who hunted down threats to international security with extreme prejudice.
The first indication that everything was about to go tits up for the Death Eaters was when one of them spotted a young woman crouched on a rooftop wearing a black leather, skintight uniform with a number of pouches strapped to her legs and waist, a pair of high tech looking goggles over her eyes and a bulky looking pistol holstered at her thigh. Now, most people would take one look at her, realize that she was likely a part of something secret, well funded and likely part of the Government and look the other way, but this was a Pureblooded Wizard, so all he saw was her full figure and clearly non magical gear and thought that he could have some fun.
He pointed his wand at the woman and cast the Imperius Curse, causing her to stiffen slightly. Now, while that was the exact opposite reaction of a successfully cast Imperio, the Death Eater didn't notice, instead swaggering up to the woman and ordering her to stand up. She did, but what happened next the Death Eater wasn't expecting at all. What he expected was for her to strip and service him, what she did was whip out a knife and introduce it to his jugular.
"Really Levi, you slit his throat?" grumbled a voice from the rafters, before a man in a similar uniform to the woman dropped out of the shadows.
"He deserves worse for what hes done, but we're not ready to strike yet," said Levi.
"Yeah, but I wanted to kill him," grumbled the man.
"Tough, now go get in position Raiden."
Raiden somehow managed to pout through his mask, but obeyed his superiors order and vanished back into the shadows.
Levi slipped her goggles back on and returned to watching the Death Eaters as they gathered in the town center. As she did, her radio crackled and a gruff voice sounded out.
"Shadow Actual, this is Shadow 1, in position."
"Shadow One, this is Actual, targets all marked, just waiting for Shadow 2 and 3 to get into position."
"Acknowledged Actual, awaiting Orders."
Their was a pause, before the radio crackled again, this time with a quiet, female voice.
"Shadow 2, ready."
"Shadow 3 in position," said Raiden's voice immediately afterwards.
"Acknowledged, all troops move in," said Levi, "Remember, take them down quickly. I'd rather not have to write any letters of condolence today."
"Got it."
Down in the village center, the Death Eaters were getting ready to move out when the leader suddenly noticed that one of their number was missing.
"Wait, wheres Slyun?" he asked.
"Not sure," said one of the other DE's, "I think he was looking for stuff on the eastern side. Maybe he found a Muggle to play with?"
The leader huffed.
"Well go check on him!" he snapped, "We're wasting time as it is and I really don't want to lose any more time in finding the Master than we have to!"
The DE scowled.
"Why don't you go and find him?" he snapped, "This was your idea Rowl!"
Rowl growled and pointed his wand at the DE.
"You really want to fight me over this?" he said.
The DE shook his head and backed down.
"Good, now go and find Slyun before the German DMLE arrive."
"Oh, I'm afraid its far too late for that," said a voice as a shadow appeared behind Rowl,
"What the…" started the Death Eater, before a huge pillar of water erupted out of the ground and slammed him into a nearby wall.
The Death Eaters spun around and pointed their wands at the newcomer as the water swirled around him. He was tall, with short, spiky black hair and was wearing the same uniform as the other Espers in the town.
"Who the hell are you?" demanded one of the Death Eaters.
The man grinned as the water around him formed into a large horn on his back.
"Weser River, ESP," said the Esper.
"A-an Esper?" stuttered one of the Death Eaters, taking a step back in fear, "W-whats an Esper doing here?"
"Making short work of you fools," said a quiet voice from a nearby rooftop.
The source of the voice was a young looking girl who didn't even look out of her teens yet wearing the same uniform as her colleagues, without the goggles, allowing her apathetic crimson eyes to bore into the Death Eaters without obstacle. Her short, dark red hair was clipped back to keep the long bangs from falling into her eyes and the sleeves of her uniform were oddly wide.
"And don't bother trying to use those Portkeys you Wizards are so fond of, we've already sorted that out."
The Death Eaters spun around again as Raiden appeared on top of a nearby post and dropped a pile of assorted rubbish that had the Death Eaters eyes bugging out as they checked their pockets and found that yes, the Esper had indeed managed to swipe every single one of their Portkeys.
"W-what do you want?" stuttered one of the DE's.
"Well, since you're guilty of more crimes than we can list off and have automatic death sentences on your heads for being Marked Death Eaters, what do you think?" asked Levi as she approached down the main road, dragging the corpse of the Death Eater she'd killed, "Noir, if you don't mind?"
The youngest Esper raised her arms and what looked like black smoke began to pour from her massive sleeves and inch its way towards the Death Eaters, quickly trapping them in a ring of black smoke that caused any plant life it touched to wither.
"You can't do this to us!" shouted one of the Death Eaters, "Do you have any idea who we are?"
"Yes, but we don't care," said Raiden as lightning sparked between his fingers.
"Indeed, you Death Eaters are only protected within the British Isles," continued Weser, "As soon as you step foot on International Soil, that protection disappears and your fair pray."
"Alright people, thats enough talk," said Levi, "Lets finish up here so we can let the Residents come back home."
"You got it boss!" said Raiden with a grin, "One crispy fried Bigot, coming right up!"
Before the trigger happy Esper could unleash his lightning bolt, the black mist that still surrounded the Death Eaters simply closed in on them and they started screaming as their skin and muscles were eaten away by the deadly caustic vapors, before the mist dissipated, leaving nothing but polished, white bones. Raiden looked like someone had just taken away his favorite toy as the lightning around his fingers flickered out.
"Don't say it Raiden," said Levi, cutting the Lighting user off before he could open his mouth.
"Yes boss," mumbled Raiden, shooting a glare at Noir, who simply ignored him.
"Weser?" said Levi, also ignoring the lightning users antics.
The man nodded and tapped his foot, causing the earth to shift and cover the bones.
Rowl couldn't believe it. Not only had they, the cream of the Wizarding World (Um, sure), been defeated, but it was at the hands of these...things! Monsters that weren't even human. This wouldn't stand, he'd show them what a real Wizard could do! He raised his wand and pointed it at the leader, the one who had killed Slyun.
"AVADRA KEDAVRA!"
"Huh?"
The green light struck the Esper and exploded, sending her hurtling back into the side of a building in a cloud of dust.
"Levi!" shouted Raiden.
"HAHAHAHA! How do you like that, bitch!" shouted Rowl.
"Owwww, that hurt."
Rowl froze.
"W-what?"
The dust cloud shifted as Levi stepped out of it, blood running from the gash in her forehead from where her broken goggles had cut her, revealing a pair of leaf green eyes.
"B-but how?" gasped the Death Eater, "N-no one can survive the Killing Curse!"
"Yeah, thats a complete lie," said Levi, "Besides, Espers have a natural immunity thanks to the energy field our body's produce. Now then, since you seem so eager to meet your maker…"
Leaves began to swirl around her as her eyes started to glow slightly.
"Now, take a leaf out of your Masters book and disappear, worm," said Levi and clenched her fist.
The leaves shot out and surrounded Rowl, before compressing down into a tiny sphere and scattering, leaving a small pile of sliced up meat where the Death Eater had been.
"Damn boss, your scary," said Raiden.
"Bloody moron, didn't even know the weaknesses of that spell," grumbled Levi, "Then again, why did I expect anything more from the idiots from Britain. They'd probably worship anyone who could survive that over rated curse."
Meanwhile, over in Britain, a baby boy sneezed in his cupboard.
And thats enough for that. Not really focused on Harry, but I wanted to set the scene and establish the Espers. Their powers come from all over, Weser and Noir from Problem Children, Levi's from Is this a Zombie and Raidens from...not really sure, but his power is lightning. I originally planned for him to be based on Raiden from Metal Gear but he kinda got away from me.
Speaking of Espers, I hope my explanation made sense. Basically, all of their powers are ones that can, hypothetically at least, work within the bounds of reality, although a few, like Levi's are a bit more supernatural than others. What that means is that they cannot create something out of nothing, although their are those who can transmute objects.
All Espers naturally project a field around them that is basically their magic leaking out of them. It serves as a level of protection from Magical Spells and some Espers can manifest it into armour or weapons and most can use it to fly. It is their one trick that doesn't follow the laws of Physics since its pure magic energy.
Espers naturally have more destructive power than Wizards because their powers are geared more towards combat, but that doesn't mean that a Wizard can't beat them. Someone like Flitwick or Moody could outfox them and Voldie and Dumbles could overpower all but the strongest simply because they have experience, power and smarts. That said, Espers are also mostly highly trained and perfectly willing to put their opponents in the ground, which certainly helps their chances in a fight.
I have no idea how accurate the military talk was in this chapter, but I would like to know if I royally screwed it up in case I decide to continue with this idea.
The Death Eaters in this are just generic Pure Bloods who exist solely to get killed by the Espers in this chapter. They were probably just low level Grunts who wanted to get a leg up by finding their Master and got vaporized in the process.
I hope you liked this entry to my Vault, even if Harrys only contribution was a sneeze. Please leave me a review!
