Hey Y'all! Here's another chapter for you! Love y'all and thank you for reading! Please let me know what you think!
Tobias, Uriah, Shauna, Zeke, and Tori are all sitting at a table conversing, everyone has been letting loose with the funeral celebration. Tobias was itching to talk to Tris, his mind was all over the place but Zeke and Uriah had practically dragged him and Shauna to join them for a few drinks citing that everyone needed to have some fun after everything that had gone down. The snow was starting to come down and it was clear they would be inside for a while. Tobias knew Tris was also planning to talk to Lynn that evening and he didn't want to hover.
"Uriah, You had two slices of cake for lunch, are you still going to have two for dinner?" Shauna teases as she takes a sip of her drink. She was trying to find any reason not to look at Tori and Zeke and roll her eyes. Tori was currently giggling while Zeke whispered in her ear.
"Of course, I really thought you knew me better than that" Uriah grins back digging into his first slice and Shauna and Tobias both let out a hearty laugh.
"You doing okay?" Tobias asks Shauna leaning in so only she can hear him.
She just shrugs in response. She had no idea why she couldn't get over Zeke. She had been a little hurt when Four broke things off with her even though they had both agreed it was nothing serious.
"We're still friends right?" He asks in a serious tone.
"Of course we are.." She tells him with a bit of a forced smile.
"Then remember I'm always here for you. If you want to talk, tell me" He nudges her shoulder making her give him a real smile this time.
"I vote we move to Pit after this, the party is just getting started" Zeke announces loudly as he raises his beer in the air. There are cheers all around the room as he does. Tori had never seen him drunk before but after the few days he had, she knew they all needed to let off some steam. Zeke had been whispering all kinds of dirty thoughts to her, which had her squirming in his lap with excitement but she had a feeling he was going to pass out as soon as he hit the bed. She doesn't miss that Shauna was glaring at her when she thought no one else was looking.
"To Felix!" Someone yells. Zeke, Uriah, Shauna, and Tori all yell in unison with the rest of the crowd "To Felix" before taking another drink. Tobias shakes his head as he raises his beer and takes a small sip. He was feeling a bit tipsy and Zeke seemed determined to get him as drunk as he was.
"Hey Lynn, what's wrong?" Shauna asks as she sees her sister walking towards them with a deadly look on her face and her fists clenched.
Tobias is sitting at the end of the table; Lynn walks straight up to him and punches him square in the face. Tobias is caught off guard and falls back onto the ground out of his seat.
"What the fuck is your problem Lynn" Tobias bellows touching his face and scrambling to his feet.
Lynn pulls back to punch him again but by this time, Uriah, Zeke, and Shauna have all jumped in between them as the cafeteria buzzes at the scene. It wasn't uncommon for fights like this, it was how the Dauntless solved problems but the fact that Lynn just punched one of the leaders shocked everyone.
Tobias knew things were different in Dauntless, but he wasn't going to outright swing on Lynn, that part of him still feared losing control and becoming his father. He did know that he needed to respond forcefully with the cafeteria full of people or the faction members would lose respect for him.
He grabs her by the collar even though Zeke and Uriah try to stop him as Shauna tries to pull Lynn away. The anger and rage in her eyes could only mean one thing…She knew about him and Tris. There are murmurs from all the eyes on them in the cafeteria. Several drunk people yell excitedly thinking that a fight is about to break out. There had been a few already, which was a common occurrence on days like today with so many people intoxicated.
"Back off" Uriah yells forcefully to a group of people who had started to gather around the small group. Tobias realizes that he needs to quickly take charge of the situation.
"Lynn you wanna fight we can take it to the training ring but mark my words, I'll make you factionless if you ever come at me like that again"
"Do it then! Do it" she screams wanting to make him hit her. She wanted to fight him, make him feel any kind of pain like she was feeling at the moment.
"Take it easy," Tori tells her trying to ease the tension.
"You stay out of this!" Shauna snaps at Tori who furrows her eyes at Shauna.
"Lynn…. please calm down" Shauna pleads turning her attention back to her sister. "What is wrong with you?"
"All the women in Dauntless want you, You can have anyone you want, why her?" Lynn says, ignoring Shauna and looking directly at Tobias, her voice shaking with emotion.
Tobias lets go of her shirt and relaxes, he knew it would be a shock, he knew what he and Tris did was wrong, but he'd only been thinking how hurt he was by Tris not admitting how she felt about him. He never once thought of Lynn and he can see she is hurt and in pain.
Zeke Shauna, Tori, and Uriah look at each other and start to realize what is going on.
"Lynn…I'm sorry, I know you aren't happy but Tris and I…. " Tobias starts.
"Congratulations, I'm sure you're going to be a great father," Lynn spits out. She yanks her arm forcefully away from Shauna and storms out of the dining hall. Shauna looks at Four and he can feel the ice in her veins from her stare.
"Seriously Four," Shauna says as she shakes her head at him. She knew that this would happen, that Four was going to wear her down but she thought that Tris would break things off with Lynn first. Four touches his fingers to his face, wincing as she narrows her eyes at him.
"Lynn wait! " Shauna calls as she runs out to try and catch up with her sister.
"Four….Bro….What the fuck…." Zeke starts wiping his face. He was too drunk to even try and give any advice.
"Not now…." Tobias says coldly when he sees Christina coming toward him. He needed to find Tris and make sure she was okay.
"Not now Christina," he says, not even bothering to look at her.
"Tris is in the infirmary, she needs you" Christina had been shocked when Hana came in and told her Tris was in the infirmary and had asked for Christina when Hana told her she was checking in on Will. She was still crying after Lynn stormed out. Christina offered to go find Four and bring Tris something to eat from the cafeteria knowing that Tris needed him right now after she told Christina everything that had happened during their scouting mission up until Christina walked in.
Tobias stops dead in his tracks hearing those words. His fight with Lynn had sobered him up a bit, but hearing that something was wrong with Tris was all he needed to completely sober up now.
"Infirmary?" Tori and Uriah's eyes go wide as they listen, realizing what Lynn said was true.
"She fainted earlier, but I'm assuming that bruise forming on your face is because Lynn found you first"
"What was that all about?" Uriah asks Christina as he pulls her to him.
"Drama…." Is all she says as she starts to pull away.
"Where you going? I haven't seen you all day." Uriah says with a frown on his face. He was pretty tipsy, nowhere near as drunk as Zeke at the moment.
"I can't Uriah, I have to get back to the infirmary and I promised your mom I would bring Tris something to eat… and I need to get back to Will.."
Uriah frowns as he watches her pull away before he can think too hard about it, Zeke throws his arm around him, pulls him to the Pit, and shoves another drink in his hand.
Tobias nods and takes off in a spirit in the direction of the infirmary. He reaches the room where Tris is lying on the bed and sobbing into a tissue, his heart clenches at the sight.
"Hey," he says softly, and she looks up, her lip trembles and he rushes over to the bed sitting down on the edge.
"I didn't want her to find out this way. This is my fault for being so selfish and trying to hide everything"
Tobias kisses her on the forehead and wipes her cheek when he pulls away. Tris leans against him as he pulls her close to him, breathing in his scent, needing to feel his arms around her. After a moment he pulls back, cupping her face with both his hands so he can look into her eyes.
"So it is true, you were right about…" He can't even bring himself to say it. His heart was beating fast as he looked at her.
Her eyes filled with tears, and she bit her lip before she slowly nodded her head. Hana had made her take a test by peeing in a cup after Lynn left and it only took a few minutes for the results to come back. She filled her Aunt in on all that had happened while Hana took her blood and did the rest of her work up.
Even though he was scared out of his mind, there was nothing on this earth Tobias wanted more than to love Tris and make her feel protected. He quickly places his lips on hers in a passionate kiss. He can feel her relax and he pulls back to pepper her face with light kisses. They were having a baby, it was strange but he started to smile as the realization sank in. If they had stayed in Abnegation, Marcus, and Andrew would have arranged a marriage between them and here in Dauntless they still ended up together. It was like this was supposed to happen. He and Tris were meant to be.
"Are you really okay with this?" she asks, trying to fight a smile but giving in when she sees the big grin on his face.
"Tris, I'm not going anywhere. I meant what I said, we will figure this out together" he confirms. "I love you so much"
"I love you too," She tells him, relieved that he is sticking by her side. Part of her was terrified he was going to run in the other direction with a pregnancy complicating things even more.
"Well looks like you are just in time Four, I'm assuming you want him to be here for this part" Hana calls from the door with an ultrasound machine on a cart. Tris smiles and nods enthusiastically.
She spent time talking with Tris after Lynn stormed out. She had felt so bad that Tris was holding everything in, not knowing who to talk to with so much going on around them. She tried her best to help her understand that she could always come to her about anything. She hadn't been surprised when Tris revealed Tobias was the father of the baby she was carrying. Hana and Natalie had talked at length about the obvious connection between the two of them that was plain as day when the two of them were together.
Tobias holds Tris' hand as Hana sets up the equipment. They both tear up as the wooshing sound of the baby's heartbeat fills the room when Hana places the ultrasound wand on her lower abdomen.
"That's our baby?" Tobias asks, looking at the screen with his eyes wide. Yes, he was terrified, but he was amazed. He couldn't even describe the feeling.
"Yes, that's your baby" Hana points at the screen chuckling, showing them the head on the monitor. "It looks like you are very early on, six weeks" Hana clicks a few buttons on the keyboard and then moves the wands again.
"Is this what you want Tris? It's early, you can decide to terminate the pregnancy if you want"
Tris bites her lip and looks at Tobias who smiles and nods. Up until this moment, she wasn't sure what she wanted but having Tobias holding her hand, and smiling. She knew right then and there she wanted to keep her baby.
"Yes, I want my baby…our baby," She says. Tobias picks up their clasped hands and kisses them as Hana nods.
Tris runs her hands through his hair and smiles, her tears are happy tears, putting Lynn out of her mind for a moment to focus on the joy radiating off of Tobias. She was terrified but it was this feeling of joy that she couldn't express running through her.
Hana allows Tris to leave the infirmary after she eats the mashed potatoes Christina brings her, giving her strict instructions on what she should be doing to take care of herself and some prenatal vitamins and nausea takes Tris back to his apartment to rest after she's discharged so she can rest.
"I didn't want to hurt her like this" Tris says quietly as she lays against Tobias's chest.
"I know…"
"Is it wrong that I'm happy that everything is out in the open now?" She asks moving to look up at him.
"Not at all, it's been hard these past few months with all the sneaking around. If we learned anything from our parents and this situation it's nothing good comes out of keeping secrets"
"You're right…" she sighs and lays her head back on his chest.
"Go to sleep, Peanut needs her mommy to rest"
"I thought I saw a peanut too, but I've decided I'm having a boy that looks like you," Tris says with a yawn.
"Whatever you want" Tobias chuckles, her eyes are already shut and just that fast she was asleep.
"Are you sure you don't want me to go with you?" Marlene asks as Caleb pulls out his heavy coat. The snow was coming down a little harder now. Several Abnegation were going out to hand out last-minute supplies before the snowstorm hit hard and this would be a great time for him to find Stephan and Elena.
"Yeah, Stay here, I'll have the radio in case I run into trouble, it won't do Abnegation any good if both of us are captured or anything"
Marlene frowns, she doesn't like it but she understands his logic. She goes into the extra bedroom to pull out the radio and weapon for Caleb to carry.
"I think I might turn this room into a training space for us since we won't be using it for a nursery anytime soon" Marlene comments as she surveys the room as he takes the gun and places it in the small of his back.
She wanted some space to practice throwing punches and she knew it wasn't wise to keep anything downstairs in case someone popped up for an unexpected visit.
"Are you sure about that?" Caleb asks rubbing a hand down her shoulder.
"Uh yeah pretty sure" Marlene scoffs and turns around to see Caleb furrowing his eyebrows.
Caleb was sure with all the sex they were having there was no way there wasn't the possibility of a baby, he knew that much about reproduction despite the dismal education he received about how babies were made in upper levels.
"Caleb I'm on birth control. I didn't think having a baby right now was the best thing"
Caleb feels his mouth fall open and he steps back. "What? How? Why didn't you tell me?"
"First off, it's my body and I get to decide when I want to be pregnant. And I asked Natalie to help me" Marlene fires back putting her hands on her hips.
"You asked my mother, and you didn't think to talk to me?" Caleb now snaps back feeling anger well up inside him.
Marlene crosses her arms in defiance. "Yes, because it didn't concern you"
Caleb wipes his hand over his face in frustration. "So I have no say on if and when we have a child?" he asks his tone cold as ice.
"Maybe that's how the Abnegation do things but not me"
Caleb nods seeing he is getting nowhere and remembering he had to get to Stephan before the snow started coming down harder.
"I've got to get going; I'll see you tonight" He dons his coat and heads out the door still frustrated by the conversation.
Marlene throws herself on the bed after he leaves, not sure what to do with all her feelings.
Caleb notices he doesn't see many people on his usual route in the Factionless section. He was still frustrated after his argument with Marlene. They had never argued before, he still wasn't sure how he felt.
"Caleb, Good to see you out and helping." Councilman Josiah Randall says as he gives a blanket to a woman.
"Yes Sir, I understand people still need our help, especially with this storm that will get worse" Caleb smiles.
"I will be sure to tell your father how dedicated you were today," Josiah tells him as he goes to hand out more blankets.
Caleb gives a fake smile as he continues walking. He had no idea what would happen the next time he saw his father and Marcus. His boots crunch under the snow that has already fallen. He takes the path towards his mother's home. Stephan and Elena didn't live far from Natalie, but it was still past the normal places the Abnegation frequented.
Caleb walks, noticing there aren't many people out now as the snow is falling a bit harder, the sky completely gray. He hears footsteps and he stops.
"You shouldn't be here" A deep voice calls.
"I'm just handing out supplies, I thought there might be some more people this way," Caleb says as he slowly turns around. He sees two Factionless men holding guns blocking the street he just came down.
"We don't need your handouts anymore," One of the men tells him taking a step forward.
"Hey leave him alone, he's just trying to help," A familiar voice says from behind Caleb. It was Stephan. Caleb relaxes a little bit but doesn't move.
The two men glare at Stephan as he walks up slowly behind Caleb.
"You two aren't tough…You want to play at being Dauntless...Stop flashing your guns if you aren't prepared to use them " Stephan challenges.
"Who put you in charge?" The taller of the two men says and continues to hold his gun in position while the other man lowers his.
"You really want to challenge me?" Stephan challenges drawing his weapon.
The two men look at each other and lower their guns.
"Come on I'll walk you back to where the other Abnegation are," Stephan tells Caleb never taking his eyes off the other two men as he lowers his weapon.
When they round the corner, Stephan pulls Caleb into an alley and a doorway. He puts his finger up to his lips.
"Who is that guy?" One of the men asks as they walk.
"Stephan, ex-Dauntless, he thinks he's better than everyone else because he left to take care of his father and wasn't kicked out"
The voices disappear and Stephan motions for Caleb to follow him. They wind down a few more corridors until they reach a small staircase. Once they climb up Stephan pulls back a huge door to reveal a loft-type space.
"Caleb!" Emila and Grayson squeal with excitement as they run across to Caleb while Stephan closes the door. Caleb looks around and takes in the large room with a small table, a kitchen area with a makeshift stove, and shelves. There was a fireplace that was lit, providing some warmth to the room. It reminded him of Natalie's apartment, all the broken pieces used purposefully to make a home.
"Hey you two, You're getting so big" Caleb greets both of them as he squats down and hugs them both.
"We haven't seen you or Marlene in forever" Emila complains as she wraps her little arms around Caleb's neck.
"We thought you forgot about us like Tris," Grayson adds, his big gray eyes sad.
"We didn't forget about you, I promise. Neither did Tris. She sent me a letter and said to say she misses you" Caleb embellishes a little causing Emila and Grayson to smile and hug him again. "And I brought you some banana bread Malene made"
"You two go in your room and play while Mom and I talk to Caleb" Stephan instructs.
"No complaining, Go," Elena tells them.
Grayson and Emila sigh but wave goodbye as they take the packages Caleb hands them and go to a room across the loft and shut the door.
"Caleb, it's good to see you, have you heard from Natalie?' Elena asks, hugging him and then gesturing for him to sit at a table.
"Yes, She's safe in Dauntless" Caleb pulls his back off and takes the gun out of his back pocket.
"I'm happy to see you but I have a feeling you risked coming this deep into the section, I thought when Natalie left, you and Marlene planned to steer clear," Stephan asks, grabbing a glass of water. He was glad he happened upon Caleb, who knew what would have happened if he hadn't been on his way home.
"We know the attack on Abnegation is coming as soon as this snowstorm lets up, and Marlene and I are working with Dauntless. We have a plan to get as many people as we can to safety but we need you to help us"
Elena looks at Stephan with a worried look. They had tried to stay away from everything, following Natalie's advice but Stephan had been heavily recruited by Evelyn knowing that he was a trained Dauntless soldier.
"What about us? What happens to us? Evelyn will come after us if we betray the Factionless" Elena asks, the worry evident in her voice.
"You come to Dauntless with us" Caleb confirms. He made sure when outlining the plan with Harrison and Amar, that Stephan and his family would be kept safe if they helped them.
"They will allow that?" Stephan asks. He wanted nothing more than to get his family off the streets.
"My mom is in Dauntless, so is most of the Candor leadership and they are taking refugees. We will take as many as we can from Abnegation to the refugee area they have set up. As long as you aren't siding with Erudite and Evelyn, you are welcome. I don't think life will be the same after this war. I think Max is more worried about doing what's right now instead of thinking about faction before blood"
Stephan looks over at Elena, Caleb can tell they are having a conversation with their eyes.
"What's the plan?" Stephan says after Elena gives him a nod.
Caleb pulls out a map and explains the plan outlined by Amar and Harrison.
