Hey Hey! Here we are again for another chapter fresh off my vacation! Thank you for reading and your reviews! Love Y'all!
"How many did we lose?" Max asks after taking a sip of his coffee. They were joined by Johanna, Natalie, Stephan, Caleb, and the surviving Abnegation council members, Cara, Jack, and two of his candor leaders along with the Dauntless leaders for this briefing.
"None from Dauntless" Chavis confirms. "But three Candor who were part the volunteer militia"
"And How many Abnegation were brought in?" Max asks next.
"300, There will be around 50 here that have been injured that will be staying here for the time being, the rest will take refuge with Amity" Tobias reports. He was still having trouble processing that Abnegation had all been but destroyed.
"There was another raid on Candor this morning. Mostly from Factionless taking over housing units. It looks like they are setting up wherever they want now" Victoria informs the group.
"Do we do anything?" Caleb asks.
"We hold our position, most of Candor have evacuated and are behind our lines" Tobias informs him and Caleb nods. After what he witnessed in Abnegation he realized that they couldn't save everyone.
"What will happen next? Do we meet with Jeanine and Evelyn?" Jack asks the group.
"If Jeanine wanted to meet she would have communicated," Max states simply. "We however sent a message loud and clear with the attack on Abnegation"
"And what message was that?" Johanna asks, uncomfortable with where things are going.
"That Dauntless isn't going to roll over and let them take this city," Max says confidently. "They have demonstrated they aren't trying to negotiate or spare lives."
"Are you planning to attack Erudite?" Elias Montgomery, one of the seven remaining Abnegation Council members inquires.
"A head-on attack isn't smart, they outnumber us but we have a few surprises if need be," Harrison says confidently as Chavis, Victoria, and Tobias all nod in agreement. The Dauntless leaders had all agreed the only way to end this was to take out Jeanine and Evelyn. It would be tricky. Max had a long private conversation with Tobias. Tobias was conflicted but he understood the greater good. If Jeanine or Evelyn didn't accept being taken into custody, there was only one option. That was the price of war and Evelyn had sealed her fate.
"Evelyn and the other factionless leaders won't wait for Erudite, Erudite might think they have control, but the Factionless will turn on them and come for Dauntless." Stephan gives his opinion. Max nodded in agreement. He had been impressed with Stephan in the short time he had spent with him. He was a good soldier and had great leadership potential.
"We have a long road ahead of us and we need to start planning what this city is going to look like once this war is over" Max continues.
"Isn't it a little early for that? Josiah Randall asks looking at his fellow Abnegation members.
"No, Dauntless has already started planning for what our future will look like, I suggest the rest of you do the same" Max suggests.
Tori paces as she waits for the others to join her on the rooftop. She shivered as she tied her scarf around her neck. She'd sent Zeke to gather the other leaders for an emergency meeting. The sun was coming up and she could hear the now familiar noises of the Candor living in the refugee area set up. Some had moved to Amity with most of the Abnegation for better housing, the blizzard had put a halt on the construction of a building Dauntless was renovating but it sounded like it was starting again.
She turns when she hears the hatch open. Max, Harrison, Victoria, Chavis, and Tobias all come up with Zeke leading the rear.
"What's going on?" Victoria asks, rubbing her hands together.
"I'm assuming it can't be good if we're up here" Chavis observes.
"Did you bring it?"She asks Zeke who nods. He and Harrison start to do a sweep for bugs, hoping that no one else knew they met up here in private.
"All clear," Harrison announces.
"Bud has been keeping me up on what's going in the tattoo parlor since I've been working on the serum antidote. He's heard some talk…"
"Talk?" Tobias asks, looking at Zeke who is pulling his beanie down over his ears.
"There's a group of rebels on the inside, they've been having meetings about how to overthrow the leaders and help Erudite and the Factionless. They are heavy anti-divergent"
"Fuck" Harrison sighs and wipes his face.
"We knew we had a leak…" Max reminds everyone calmly. "How many?"
"He doesn't know but guess who is leading the charge?" Tori offers.
"Eric" Zeke tells the group.
"Son of a bitch" Max grunts.
"How? He's been gone for months?" Tobias asks.
"I guess he had his claws in deeper than we thought" Zeke shrugs.
"Bud hear anything else?"
"Just that something is coming. I don't think it will be a big attack, It looks like the Factionless might be turning on Erudite."
"And Eric's working with the Factionless now?" Tobias asks furrowing his eyebrows.
Tori shrugs. "Cara did say that things were tense with him and Jenaine before she fled"
"Good work Tori. Everyone keep your eyes open and be on high alert. Zeke, see if you can catch anything on the cameras, look for patterns of people leaving, and see if Bud can give you a name to help track some people. Harrison, have Christina interview any hits out get from Bud's info and keep up the random interview with the help of the Candor. Four, get with Amar and see if we can ramp up the training program. Chavis, check with the perimeter guards, we need to know where people are leaving and change them over. Victoria, you and I will review the attack scenarios and strike teams to see if we need to shift some." Max delegates.
Zeke grabs Tori kisses her and smiles as everyone makes their way to exit the hatch. If the fight was coming, they would be ready.
"Ummm Daddy, Can I borrow some credits until next month" Tris asks as she and Natalie put up the things from the commissary they picked up.
Things were tightening up with the extra mouths from Candor and Abnegation but Natalie was used to cooking with smaller rations. Max and Natalie agreed that with all of the other factions now milling around Dauntless, she could venture out. He still wanted her to be careful and keep her eyes open. Today everyone is taking a moment for their first family dinner with Caleb and Marlene in Dauntless.
"And what happened to your credits" Natalie inquires as Tris gives her a sheepish smile.
"Well I got a little carried away buying stuff for the baby and I got some things for Grayson, Emilia, and Elena too, and Uriah's birthday present…" Tris had come to realize she loved being able to give gifts.
It was something that made other people happy. She had so many ideas for her family and friends. She couldn't wait for Tobias' birthday in a few months. She could admit she had gone a little crazy in the commissary earlier in the week.
Max chuckles, walks by, and kisses her on top of her head. "Sure Baby Girl, I'll take care of it first thing in the morning. "
"Max" Natalie chastizes. While she knew Tris was a grown woman starting her own family she didn't think that Max should spoil her as much as she did and with a new baby coming he was going to have to toughen up.
"It's fine Nat, I have more credits than I could spend in a lifetime. I already set Caleb and Marlene up with some as well as Stephan and Elena" Max defends.
"Tris you have to manage your credits better" Natalie continues to fuss.
"I know, I know. We didn't have to worry about stuff like this in Abnegation" Tris shrugs.
"We are going to sit down so I can teach you about making a budget," Natalie tells her
"Yes Ma'am" Tris sighs and Natalie shakes her head.
"And you better toughen up Mr." Natalie teases as she narrows her eyes at Max who pulls her to him for a kiss.
"Give me a break, I'm making up for lost time" He chuckles, knowing she was also thinking about the new baby coming. Moments like this made his heart swell with love, it was small but normal. He knew from helping Hana with Uriah and Zeke that he had to be stern at times, with his daughter, she turned him into a big teddy bear and he couldn't find it in his heart to tell her no.
"Heaven help us when this grandbaby gets here," Natalie chuckles shaking her head with a smile.
A few hours later the family gathers for dinner that evening to introduce Caleb and Marlene to the family and meet afterward at Max and Natalie's request. Stephan, Elena, Grayson, Emailia, Harrison, and Amar were all in attendance. Natalie didn't want them to feel alone or out of place in Dauntless. Everyone appreciated these quiet moments in the middle of the war that was going on.
"Well, I'm happy you ended up in the family one way or the other" Hana teases Marlene as she hugs her. Marlene laughs, Hana had been a wonderful mother figure since she had such a strained relationship with her mother.
"You can't get rid of me" Caleb smiles at their interaction. He'd been a little intimidated when Marlene revealed that she and Uriah had dated but all his nervousness was erased after spending time with him this week. Hana couldn't stop gushing over her nephew and his wife, especially after she patched him up from his escape from Abnegation. Marlene was glowing she was so happy.
Emilia and Grayson were laughing as Tobias and Uriah played with them, Natalie, Hana, and Tris were giggling together as Marlene tried to convince Elena to visit the salon. Zeke, Amar, Tori, and Stephan were in an animated conversation. He'd spent many a lonely night in this large apartment. It felt alive now.
"Caleb, I owe you an apology," Max says as he and Caleb find themselves in the kitchen alone while the family chatters away continuing to eat and drink.
"For what?" He asks curiously as he looks at Max.
"I may not have known about Tris, but I knew about you. When I thought Nat was dead, I left you with Andrew. I should have thought …"
Caleb smiles at him. Max was a good man and could see how much he loved his mother and sister.
"It's not your fault. No one is to blame but Andrew…"
Max nods.
"I know you and I don't know each other well and I'm still figuring out being a father but know I'm here now, and I'm not going away. I hope that if you need me for anything, I'll be here just like I am for Tris"
"That means a lot, Max, thank you" Caleb smiles. Max was a good man and a good leader. The future was uncertain but if Max led the way, Caleb trusted him.
Max nods and takes a piece of cake over to Natalie. He bends down and kisses her before he sits back down. Tris comes over to start on the dishes and Calbes naturally starts to help her. They work in silence for a moment as Caleb contemplates the group.
"It's a little overwhelming isn't it?" Tris says coming to nudge Caleb with her shoulder, having an idea of what he was feeling as they did the dishes from dinner and watched the rest of the family play a card game.
"Yeah, but I like kind of like it" Caleb chuckles. "You and me washing dishes together feels like old times though"
"It sure does" Tris flicks some soap suds at her brother who laughs and splashes water at her.
"Do you think you want to stay here? Marlene seems happy" Tris probes once they stop laughing.
"Mom would be over the moon…." Caleb admits.
"It doesn't matter what mom wants, only you and Marlene"
"Is that even an option?" Caleb wonders out loud.
"Daddy is working with Jack to change things. Mom and I have been working on plans to present to the council to allow any member of Dauntless who was factionless back into the faction. I'm sure we can get an exception for you and Marlene"
"Hmmmm" Is all the response Caleb gives.
"But I also think we should just enjoy days like this" Tris offers, seeing her brother was conflicted. He smiles and nudges her with his shoulder causing her to laugh.
He and Tris finish the dishes and join everyone in the living area.
"Why are we having a family meeting?" Zeke asks as he drops on the couch. Tori shakes her head as he pulls her hand to sit on his lap.
"Do family meetings happen often?" Caleb inquires as he and Marlene squeeze in next to each other on one of the large chairs next to the space.
"Usually only when something big is happening," Uriah tells him.
"Well we won't keep you in suspense any longer" Max smiles. "Tris, I think you and Four should start.."
Amar raises his eyebrows and Caleb and Marlene look at each other and then at Tris and Tobias.
"Some of you have heard, but some of you haven't" Tris starts with a shy smile as Tobias grabs her hand.
"Tris and I are having a baby," Tobias says proudly.
"Congratulations!" Marlene exclaims as she gets up to hug her new sister-in-law. Tris and Marlene had clicked immediately as soon as they met.
"That's wonderful news" Elena smiles as Emilia comes to sit on her lap.
"Well this is something, Congratulations" Amar smiles as he pulls Tobias in for a hug. Harrison, Stephan, and Caleb come up to shake Tobias' hand. Tori, Zeke, and Uriah come up to hug them even though they had known after Tobias and Lynn's confrontation in the dining hall.
Once everyone has had an opportunity to congratulate the young couple, Max clears his throat and calls for everyone's attention.
"Since we are making family announcements, Nat and I have something to share," Max says commanding everyone's attention as Natalie stands beside him with a big smile.
"I have asked Nat to marry me and she said yes," Max says proudly grabbing Natalie's hand.
There is a resounding round of cheers and applause from the entire room. Tris smiles and starts to cry hoping up to hug her parents.
"You two deserve all the happiness in the world' Hana gushes as she hugs her sister.
"Can we come to the wedding Ms. Natalie?" Emilia asks causing everyone to chuckle.
"Yes, of course, sweetheart, we want all of you to be there with us," Natalie tells them causing Emilia to squeal with delight and the congratulations and chatter continues.
"We have some more news," Max calls gaining everyone's attention and everyone starts to quiet down wondering what else it could be as Hana smiles big. Everyone looks around wondering what it could be.
"I think we are both in shock that this was even a possibility, especially since we have a grandbaby on the way but Max and I are expecting a baby boy," Natalie tells them as she unzips her bulky hoodie to reveal a small tank top that shows off her baby bump.
The chatter starts again and another round of hugs goes around as Natalie starts crying, all the emotions of the day getting to her.
"Wow, how far along are you?" Tris gasped, excited for her parents hopping up to hug them again and shocked that she and her mother were pregnant.
"5 ½ months" Max confirms for everyone as Harrison slaps him on the back with a grin.
Caleb smiles as he looks around after he hugs his mother. It felt like he was living in an alternate reality, this is what they were fighting for. Love and family.
After the party winds down, Hana, Max, and Natalie are alone in the apartment and Natalie asks her sister to join her on the couch.
"Even though Jack is understanding and supportive of everything we've been doing to stop Erduite and save Chicago, we still don't know if Max will be ousted or put in jail. We don't know if we can make an appeal for me to stay in Dauntless. Max and I want to know, with things so up in the air with what will happen, will you take the baby, and raise them if something happens to either of us or Max has to become factionless?" Natalie asks her sister.
Hana feels emotions rise in her. She didn't want to lose her sister again and couldn't imagine how she could make life work without Max. She sure as hell didn't want her niece or nephew to grow up without their parents but she knew it was better than the child growing up factionless.
"Of course," Hana moves to hug her sister.
Max smiles watching them embrace. He feels a pang of sadness wishing his best friend was still here.
"We also wanted to know if you would be okay with us naming our son Reggie?" Max asks.
Now Hana does cry. Natalie pulls her close.
"Of course, I think Uriah and Zeke would feel honored too. This baby is going to know nothing but love" Hana vows.
"I think we did it!" Cara says excitedly standing up from looking into her microscope.
"Finally!" Will grins standing up on one of his crutches to take a look. He lets out a yell of excitement as he sees the same thing Cara sees.
"Are you sure?" Tori asks excitedly taking a turn at the microscope. She grins as she stands up to see Cara and Will embracing. She gives Cara a big hug next.
"I can't wait to tell Hana" Cara gushes. Hana was busy treating patients that morning and the three in the lab were determined to press on without her.
"How do we test it?" It's not like we have anyone injected with the serum here" Will asks putting a damper on the mood in the lab.
"It wouldn't be wise to take it out into the field without testing it" Cara reasons running over ideas in her head.
"Could we capture someone maybe?" Tori offers knowing it is a long shot.
"I'm confident this will work, we just don't know if the dose is strong enough" Cara offers pacing back and forth.
"Maybe that's all we need?" Will suggests sitting down again. His leg was almost healed. He couldn't wait to get rid of his crutches.
"Keep going" Cara urges trying to pick up on what he was thinking.
"We just need the antidote to be strong enough to disengage them. Once we do that we can get them here, administer more antidote"
"Brilliant," Tori says and Cara nods in approval.
The trio works for a few more hours and works out how to produce more antidote and present to the task force and leaders their plan. Will heads to physical therapy and Cara and Tori work to clean the lab up.
"Want to grab dinner? Zeke's working surveillance tonight and Amar's training some of the Candor who want to fight"
"Sure" Cara agrees. She liked Tori, she had a good spirit and even though she was Dauntless, she was smart.
The two end up in Tori's apartment laughing as they share a beer. Tori liked seeing Cara let loose a little bit. Tori talked about George and her parents and her time in Erudite.
"Nothing's going to be the same after all is said and done" Cara sighs.
"No, I don't think it can be" Tori could empathize with Cara. She betrayed her faction to save the city, she had no idea where she would end up. Would she be welcome in Dauntless or Amity? Would she go to prison or be made factionless for her part in helping Jeanine? It was overwhelming and she tried not to think about it too much.
"Tori, I like you, you and Will have been the only friends since we've been working together the past month but I need to tell you something. It doesn't feel right keeping it from you," Cara says gathering all of her courage. The Dauntless she had encountered had shown her nothing but kindness, she'd been up every night that week thinking about how to have this conversation with Tori.
Tori furrows her eyebrows wondering what Cara was about to say. Was Cara about to confess she had feelings for her or something?
"You know I was Jeanine's right hand and helped her run all the experiments. At first, when I got here I thought you knew but listening to you talk, I wanted to tell you the truth"
"Truth about what?" Tori asks hesitantly.
"Your brother, George…He's alive…" Cara feels her voice shake as she speaks the words.
"What?" Tori screams and she leaps out of her seat looking wild-eyed.
"Look through the files on the flash drive. The five test subjects from Dauntless are detailed there. George responded well to the serum. He's Jeanie's deadliest weapon"
Tori feels like she's outside of her body as she processes the information.
"I'm sorry…" Cara whispers wiping a tear from her eye and watching Tori. This was the first time she'd truly felt the hurt from what she'd done and it gutted her. She hadn't seen the test subjects as people with families that cared about them. She felt gutted for the first time.
Tori puts her hands on her chest. "I need to go…" she states suddenly.
"Are you going to be okay?" Cara asks unsure of what to do.
"Yeah…I just…I need answers. Do you have a copy of the info from the flash drive"
Cara nods in understanding and gets up. "Yeah at Hana's."
"Let's go," Tori tells her in a deadly tone.
Zeke rolls his neck. It was late, he'd been looking at surveillance footage all day with Christina trying to find anything out of the ordinary. Max knew someone was working inside Dauntless against them, they just needed to find out who. With Stephan, Caleb, Natalie, and Cara all inside Dauntless they had lost any inside information about what the Factionless or Erudite's next move would be. All he wanted to do right now was take a hot shower and curl up with Tori until his surveillance debrief in the morning. She'd given him a key and he used it to unlock the door. He's surprised to see her sitting at the table with a stack of papers. She looked upset, her eyes were puffy and red, and she'd been crying.
"Baby, what's wrong? Are you okay?" He asks, dropping his bag, walking quickly across the room, and squatting in front of her.
"You knew, Max gave up George and you never told me…You knew he was still alive…" Tori says coldly, shaking a bit from the anger coursing through her.
"Baby let me explain" Zeke pleads, his stomach doing flips.
"Don't Baby me." Tori scoffs and rolls her eyes. "I knew this was too good to be true and like a fool I trusted you, I was so desperate I believed you. God, I'm so stupid"
"Tori, yes I knew but we needed more information…we thought it would be best if…." Zeke interrupts. His heart was breaking, he never wanted to hurt Tori. He'd gone along with what Amar thought best.
"What was this? Keep me close to find out if I knew, keep me distracted from looking into what happened?" She spits out. She felt like she was going to be sick.
"No, Tori, no...I love you, come on, I never wanted to hurt you...I just.." Zeke stumbles over his words.
"Get out," She tells him with a coldness he'd never heard from her.
"Please Tori let's just talk…"
"I said GET OUT!" she half yells, half sobs at the top of her lungs, tears falling.
Zeke nods, feeling defeated, realizing he needs to give her some space. She wasn't in a place to listen.
Zeke stops after he opens the door and turns to look at Tori, who is holding herself up on the table with her hands.
"I love you and I'm not giving up on us," Zeke says firmly, his voice cracking with emotion.
Tori feels the anger flood through her. She picks up the glass next to the table next to her and hurls it at the door as Zeke closes the door behind him. It shatters into a million pieces and Tori falls against the wall next to the table sliding down slowly. It felt like she had a gaping hole in her chest, just like it did when she watched George hold his hands over the coals on his choosing day, and the same it did when Amar told her they were declaring George dead. And now Zeke had left one just like it.
Eric leans against the wall in Evelyn's new home, the same home she had shared with Marcus and reclaimed as her own. His time with the Factionless leaders taught him more than he expected. More than anything he learned just how much Jeanine underestimated them.
"How much longer do we need to wait?" She snaps pacing back and forth. She was livid that the attack on Abnegation had been spoiled.
"We need to recover from the attack on Abnegation, you knew that we decided to attack." Charlie reminds her.
She rolls her eyes and continues pacing. "How the hell did we have so many losses"
"Dauntless was more prepared than we anticipated" Mason chimes in.
"And when will Phase Three be ready?" She looks at Eric.
"It's in play…" Eric informs the group. He'd successfully convinced his group of rebels in Dauntless to switch sides.
"And Jeanie?"
Eric gives a sinister smile. Jeanine had taken him for granted one too many times. While he didn't particularly care for Evelyn or any of the other Factionless, he wasn't going to be on the losing side of this war and Evelyn was poised to take control. "She has no idea"
"Good, just the way we want it" Evelyn smiles. "Time for us to take what's ours"
