Chapter Four

Three Weeks Later

November 3rd 2014

"Come on Stevie... this isnt healthy" Jo stressed at the small blonde sat on the sofa "Im not going" she spoke. Jo sighed "Why not?" she asked. Stevie rose to her feet "You know why... Smithy will be there... and his little fanclub of cronnies to make my evening hell". Jo sighed "Stevie.. you have done nothing wrong... why dont you tell him what happened... how it happened". Stevie shook her head "No... I am fine as I am Jo... just leave me..". Jo grabbed her arm "Get some nice clothes on... glam yourself up... and if they are there we will go somewhere else.. ok.. please for me... its my birthday?". Stevie sighed "One drink". The blonde DS had avoided any contact with Smithy and most of their colleagues, she took her refs at different times and was working cases that she could manage on her own, nobody wanted to be involved with her anyway, outside of work she would return home and spend the evening hiding in Jos spare room, her life was hell on Earth. She had dressed in her favourite black jeans and her new top, well it wasnt new, she had brought it over a month ago but she had never worn it. She applied a little make up before heading into the living room insearch of the only friend she had left. "You look great Stevie.." Jo smiled "Thanks... but I am dreading this". They headed to the door and Jo smiled back to her "Another year older.. I hate birthdays.." Stevie sighed "Tell me about it... why are we going again?" she asked and Jo grabbed her hand "No chance.. come on". They headed to the cab and climbed in the back before pulling off in the direction of the pub.

"So Anna-Marie.. how are you finding Sunhill?" Callum asked sitting next to the latest PC. The young woman was no more than 25 and had the body of a film star, her slim body was pefect with curves in all the right places. She hadnt gone unnoticed by any of the officers, she tucked a long blonde hair behind her ear and smiled "Its good, today was great... although.. I dont think the Inspector likes me". Callum sighed "Dont take it personally... he is having a rough time... his marrige broke up a few weeks ago". The woman sighed "Aww poor bloke.. I am sure he can find a woman to help him get over it.." she smiled at Callum "If your offering... let him know... he would love it". She laughed "No.. no... I dont do relationships.." Callum laughed "I dont think he ever will again.." she nodded before heading towards the young Inspector stood at the bar. He smiled "You ok?" he asked and she nodded "I think we got off on the wrong foot... I just.." she noticed his eyes shot to the door and he sighed "For fuck sake". Anna-Marie glanced over "Whats up?" she asked. He frowned "My soon-to-be-ex-wife has just walked in". The blonde sighed "Sorry... do you still love her?" she asked and he glanced back to her "No... I hate her... I cant stand the sight of her..". Anna-Marie glanced over as the small blonde woman approached the bar with a woman she knew to be Jo Masters "She is staring at you" Anna-Marie smiled and he sighed before taking another sip of his beer "Why dont you give her some thing to look at?" she grinned before winking at the Inspector.

"Who is that?" Stevie asked turning back to Jo as the woman and her husband sat talking. "That is Anna-Marie Lay... our new PC, she started today". Stevie frowned "Is she single?" Jo shrugged her shoulders "Look at her Stevie.. what do you reckon?". They both glanced over just in time to see her move into Smithys lips, Stevie felt like she had been punched in the stomack, she hadnt felt like this since she was a young teenager and her crush Liam Ford asked out that slapper Denise Thompson instead of her. She felt Jo place her hand to her shoulder and ask "You ok?" she turned back to face her "No... Im not.. I need to go.." Jo nodded "Drink up". She felt him smirk as his voice echoed round her head "Ello Stevie... all the street corners full tonight?" he laughed. Jo sighed "Do one Callum". The man leant over her shoulder "Look how happy he is.." her eyes glanced to the Inspector "I am happy for him" she whispeared "She is a right little cracker... cant say I blame him... I reckon he will be getting really lucky tonight". Stevie glanced to Jo and she read the signs smiled before saying "Lets go... see you tomorrow Callum". Stevie made her way to the exit and Callum shouted accross the pub to Nate "Who let the dog out?" they both burst out laughing and she turned back and seeing Smithy snigger she felt the tears in her eyes as she headed out the pub door.

Jo smiled at the small blonde sat on the sofa "Are you ok?" she asked, Stevie was begining to think it was all Jo had said to her in the last three weeks. "What do you think?" she asked "I thought he loved me". Jo sighed "I think he does Stevie... but he is hurting.. and.." she paused as the tears rolled down her cheeks "Why dont you tell him the truth Stevie?". She shook her head "I cant Jo.. you have no idea.. I love him so much". Jo smiled "Shall I talk to him for you?" Stevie shook her head "No dont... I.. I just wish he wasnt with that woman..". Jo smiled "You know as well as I do it wont last... Smithy doesnt do long term" Stevie glanced up at her and Jo sighed "Except for you I mean". Stevie let out a slight smile "I never thought he would want any one but me". Jo frowned "He doesnt... why do you think he is venting all this anger at you... he is trying to get over you". Stevie shook her head "I dont want him to get over me Jo.. I love him so much". Jo smiled "Stevie... you are going to have to tell him the truth... or let him go". The small blonde smiled "I am going to go to bed... see you tomorrow... oh and happy birthday Jo". She grinned "Thanks Stevie".

The next day came round far to quickly and as she sunk down at her desk she frowned at the photo that had been layed on her desk, she heard Mickey snigger as she stared at the woman cuddled up in her husbands arms at the pub last night. "Is this meant to be funny?" she asked turning to the DC. He shrugged "I dunno... maybe its meant to show you how to make a man truely happy". She dropped her photo into the bin "Your sick.. all of you" she turned back to her computer. Mickey leant onto her desk "Why dont you take a hint Stevie... we dont want you here... no one wants you here.." she frowned "Thats not really your call... I am a good copper.." Mickey sighed "We are going to get you out... so why not quit while your ahead?" he asked. She frowned "What happened to you Mickey?" he laughed "Nothing happened to me... it was you who turned into a little slapp..." the voice startled him "DC Webb... no work to do?" Neil asked and Mickey turned to him "Sorry Gov". Neil smiled "A word please DS Moss?" she sighed before rising to her feet and following him into his office. "How are you Stevie?" he asked as she closed the door, she glanced out at Mickey "Fine Gov.. its been a hard few weeks... but things will get easier". He smiled "I have heard things Stevie... and I want you to know you can talk to me... I have no intentions of getting in the middle of your marrige and I will not have people making your life difficult.." he gave her a knowing look and she smiled "Its not Mickeys fault Gov... Smithy is angry.. he has turned everyone against me and I deserve nothing less.." Neil sighed "Dont let Smithy put you down... I dont condone what you have done.. but life is hard and I know you will have had your reasons... do you have any leave owing?" he asked. She nodded "About a month?". He smiled "Why dont you take it... go and see your parents?". A smile traced her lips "You dont mind?" she asked. He smiled "Of course not it will do you good... when would you like it to start?" he asked. "Can I go at the end of the week?" she asked and he nodded "Of course".

Knocking on his door she smiled as he called her inside "Hey.." she spoke. "What do you want?" he asked. Stevie frowned "I wanted to let you know I am going away... to see my parents for a few weeks.." he nodded "Hopefully you wont bother coming back.. I will send the divorce papers there". She frowned "I am coming back Smithy.. I was hoping.. that we could.. put everything behind us and be friends.. I still care about you.." he laughed "Care.. you slept with someone else Stevie.. I cant stand you... and anyway Anna-Marie.. she is my future.. and you.. you arent going to be involved in it at all". She nodded "We still have to work together Smithy.." he shook his head "Na.. I'll make sure they get rid of you before long... make the most of it Stevie... your life in Sunhill is as good as over... so do us all a favour and dont bother coming back" she walked to the door and turned back to him "Despite everything... I have always loved you... I always will". He glared out "Get out" she walked out the room and sighed as Callum headed towards her "You begging for another chance" he laughed "No point.. you seen the bird he has been scoring with... why would he want you". She sighed "Im just trying to put it right". He nodded "Try taking a long walk off a short pier... no one wants you here... take the hint and disapear Stevie".
