Hints of dusk were painting the sky when he arrived there. He did not have much to do today, so he was with his friends... Sharing his regrets that they had already heard of so many times before. Yet he was there... It was painful... to stand there wondering the what ifs and whether nots. But it was the pain that kept him sane... Sane enough to keep doing what he had to do... what he promised to do and... what he must do... To honour them and keep their wills alive. Within himself. Today he had a news to tell, among those regrets and promises... Or perhaps another thing that he failed at...

He sighed glancing over. Few more names were added to the KIA stone now. More than half of the stone was filled with names. With a quick glance, Kakashi perused the new entries as he recognized some of them. Then his trained eye focused on the regular spot, where it had been concentrating on for years now. His mind raced over the regrets and thoughts, that were omnipresent for years now. He didn't become a good enough son or a friend or a teammate. And now, he wasn't a good enough shinobi to fit in the Anbu. His duties as an Anbu were no longer needed by the Third, it seemed. The only explanation he got was that Anbu had filled his heart with darkness. Kakashi had no clue what made the Third reach this conclusion. 'What do you think it means, Obito? I didn't do the same mistakes again... and still my heart is dark...'

He did kill ruthlessly, he admitted that, but it was all to not cause any casualties, was he wrong in doing that as well? Will he ever do a single right thing ever in his lifetime, he wondered. His mistakes had cost lives. He focused on the two names carved in the stone in front of him. In his gennin days he saw Obito and Rin merely as teammates, nothing more. Friendship emerged after he shared a few meals with both of them, but he kept his feelings at bay, he had to. He saw what happened when feelings interfered with one's duty and he had promised his father he won't end the same, so he just had to. And finally when he decided to accept the bond of friendship, rather accepted it wholeheartedly, no matter for how small timespan, life severed that bond by means of Obito. Yet he kept that bond in his heart and then Rin happened.

Sometimes, his mind formed an ironic thought. He had all of this within his reach, right before him and he refused to acknowledge. And now, when life had callously snatched it all away, Kakashi was desperately trying to grasp whatever shreds of those severed bonds remained, painfully clutching them to keep him sane. After all this, he had realized one thing, of all the feeling he had ever felt in his twenty years of pathetic life, guilt was the worst. It had the ability to eat a person alive from inside.

A twig snapped nearby, and Kakashi was high on alert. Someone was nearing the KIA stone. He waited a few moments, then he heard murmur of voices. He completed his apology one last time and jumped on a nearby tree. Two Anbu with their masks hiding their identity reached the clearing at that very instant. He won't have his mask in few more days and no more shadows. He would be out in open training some kids, as the Hokage had ordered. He sighed and was about to leave when—

"… No one seems to be good enough for the captain position, though. Team Ro was the most efficient. No casualties and no washout." Kakashi heard one of them say.

"Well, what would you expect from a team that had a captain who could kill his own teammates if the need be. I would have died long ago if I was assigned to team Ro.", said the second one.

The first Anbu laughed "Heh… No wonder you are always given odd jobs to do…" The two of them bickered on, but Kakashi had left.

As if the weight on his heart was not enough, Kakashi felt like sharp kunai was slicing his heart nice and slow, then leisurely pushing straight through his heart, making sure it hurt more than it had the previous moment. He had heard people trash talk him from a young age and he didn't have hard time ignoring it. But it hurt. So deep, that he wanted to give up sometimes. Just like his father had. And that would mean betraying his friends, insulting Obito and Rin's… sacrifice.

"Death was her choice..."

Kakashi stopped abruptly on a tree top, panting heavily, as a new dread clouded his mind. Kishi…

Did she think the same way about him? Did she also thought he was filled with darkness? But she knows everything doesn't she? Will she—

He tried to calm down. He didn't really know what she thought, but he did know that she talked to him indifferently. Kishi was no fool to not hear about his names and rumours within Anbu. And yet she often stopped to check on him. A slight nod in the locker room aisle or a short wave at the exit whenever one of them was finishing up their shift, and sometimes just the eye contact. For almost a decade they were together in Anbu, they always knew about the whereabouts of one another. This especially happened a lot after Kishi had befriended Itachi and Itachi was placed on Team RO. Kakashi had always wondered how come Kishi, who refused to smile in the Anbu locker room let alone talk to anyone, ended up friends with Itachi, who rivalled Kishi's ability of minding their own business. He had introduced her to Tenzou and sometime later to Yugao, but Kishi didn't even bother to talk to them later. But Itachi, she had taken interest into him. Those two were often seen greeting each other or sharing a break in dango shop. There was a rumour that Kishi threatened an Anbu when Itachi had joined his team. Some said Kishi slapped the Anbu, some said she beat him up enough for him to faint. Kakashi never let rumours take over his curiosity, but was really unsettled after he first heard of. Kishi was never fazed by anything and such rumours won't be successful either. But he had a nagging sense that he had to know what happened. Upon confronting Itachi about it, he was humorously vague. The only thing Itachi told Kakashi was that Kishi was harsh and the Anbu fainted, but refused to say anything further. In short Itachi did not let it slip. Kakashi tried to pry a little but every time he asked, Itachi found creative ways to be as vague as possible, never revealing what exactly happened. But the rumours worked in Kishi's favour, atleast he thought so. Many of their subordinates were terrified to talk to Kishi. Once Kakashi had even heard Itachi pointing out to few occupants of the locker room who were uncomfortable merely by the presence of Kishi. Their amused faces always confused him, whenever anything regarding her squabble would come up.

For the second time tonight, Kakashi halted his steps. There were rumours about her all over the place. Did he himself believe them? And 'if' he did believe them, it would be only fair that she would believe the rumours above him too. Although it seemed like a thing Kishi would possibly do, she was aggressive and intimidating sometimes, he did not really considered it to be true. Although he tried to make Itachi talk about it, it didn't seem a matter that would get her in trouble. So he left it at that.

But Kishi knew what his rumours were about. She was well aware of everything that happened. Just the thought of Kishi giving in to rumours was way more disturbing. Kakashi took deep breaths. His mind was playing games again. Whatever thoughts raced through his minds, he refused to give in. Kishi would never think he was a cold-hearted murderer, nor a friend killer. If she did, she would have not planned pranks on him. Kakashi was the only person besides Itachi, that Kishi talked to for no reason at all. At times she even annoyed the both of them. Once Kakashi was sure, that she was going to pull his mask down, when she playfully pinched his nose. He was sure she was taking her revenge for scolding her right there. He had not intended to use his harsh voice. He had noticed her annoying Itachi and they were to start their shift at the surveillance centre. He simply wanted them to hurry. But it came out as a graceful nag. He was counting his options when she had raised her hand to his mask. Instead, she had pulled his nose with such a force that he had to duck his head, painfully so. He had glared at her a little, when he heard the entire aisle burst into coughing fits. A full grin had brightened up her face. That was a rare occurrence itself. It felt as if simply annoying him, made her day. And he had let that slide.

But something had started after that. From his next mission, he heard numbers announced nearby him, in increasing order as if someone was keeping counts of something. It felt just weird at the start, but then he heard more random numbers called out frequently. It didn't matter if he was present in the room or not, the numbers were still announced. At first, he didn't want to get into some petty game, but it irritated him from time to time. For two months he had tried to guess what was going on. His team didn't seem involved at first. But when he had returned from a week-long mission and had merely entered the Anbu locker room, Itachi had loudly declared "547!" 'Wasn't it Itachi who asked me what's all this about, the other day?'

Kakashi was utterly shocked. He knew something was up, but didn't expect his own team being a part of it. It was then that he spotted how attentive people were about his actions. He was used to eyes on his back, but this was different. He had cornered Tenzou before leaving. But it seemed neither Tenzou nor Yugao seemed to know anything. Asking Itachi was a gamble. He won't reveal unless he wanted to. Not many people were aware, it seemed. Many other captains denied that it even happened that often. So it was just a group of some people who were... 'What were they even doing?' Now he was extremely restless, as to what was going on. Tenzou was his partner in this task. They had started the analysis of when and how frequently were the numbers declared for few days and Tenzou had opted out. This was extremely frustrating. Tenzou was on to it and had deliberately (and subtly) chosen to do so. Well, if he could have just simply told him what it was all about... But no.

He made up his mind. Kakashi was going to bust it, whatever it was. So, he started waiting in the locker rooms for longer time periods, but all in vain. Whenever he dejectedly thought that there would be no more counts or almost gave up, someone would shout out.

In the end it was Tenzou who came around, saying he had his fill on annoying Kakashi and continued to count right in front of him.

'15' Tenzou had said.

'What happened just now? What did you count for?' Kakashi was calm yet curious. Tenzou wasn't going to tell him straight away. Dejectedly, he sighed.

'16' He could see how Tenzou was clearly having fun.

'What?' Kakashi was getting annoyed now. He would figure it how somehow but he won't give Tenzou the fun of teasing him. He sighed deeply.

'17'

Kakashi got up to leave. Tenzou blocked him. Agitated, Kakashi glared at him but his kohai seemed to hold his ground.

'You won't tell me. You won't let me leave. Just what do you want?' Kakashi got no response. So he gave up. He just wanted to get out of here. He wasn't going to let some petty game get to him. This was the end of it. He sighed again.

'...18'

And it struck him. For the last 5 minutes Tenzou had counted four times, whenever he sighed. Just to be sure Kakashi dramatically said "You should treat your seniors with respect Tenzou"—a sigh – "Perhaps I have to work hard to make sure of it, huh?" Kakashi waited for a response.

'19.'

And he got all the confirmation he needed. Tenzou's smiling face had guaranteed it. So they were counting his sighs. That was just ridiculous. Why would someone want to bother with such a thing. Maybe just to annoy him. Well they were successful at that so far. But who would plan this?

And then, Tenzou's face had changed from a smiling one to that of fear. He had visibly paled. Kakashi had followed his line of sight and saw Kishi glaring daggers at his kohai. As soon as Kishi saw Kakashi she walked towards them with a smile. As she reached them, she nodded at Kakashi with a smile, 'See you later.' Then she held Tenzou's shoulder as if giving him a friendly pat and walked away. And he knew who. Kakashi did not miss how stiff Tenzou went as she approached nor did he miss Kishi's silent threat to his kohai.

Kakashi did not know how to get back at her. But he started minding his habit and all of it eventually cooled down. As silly as it was, the whole thing had proven to be good teamwork exercise. A few weeks later he found out people were even using ninjutsu to keep track of his sighing habit. It wasn't just Kishi. Itachi had helped her right from the beginning.

Kakashi was searching for options to get back at both of them, when he had heard about Shisui Uchiha. Itachi was a little miserable at times, but he was a private person and Kakashi was not good at consoling. So he never talked to Itachi about it. He tried to keep it normal in his team and during mission. If Itachi wanted to talk about it he would, Kakashi had thought. Eventually Itachi had talked about a promise of a dying friend but nothing more. Itachi seemed more distant than before. He wasn't seen much with Kishi after that. They both were friends and still frequented the dango shop but Kakashi had noticed the carefree bond had died down a little. Both of them would carry on with their missions and still meet once in a while, but something was amiss. Maybe, Itachi would need some time to heal. Kakashi was aware of the rumours surrounding the suicide. Itachi's name had popped up too many times. Whatever it was, it would need time. The Uchihas were really private people, so Kakashi decided not to bother Itachi but offered help nonetheless. Recently he had met Itachi, when he visited the Uchiha shrine. He seemed okay then. Perhaps he was healing...

Kakashi didn't realize he was in the village market. His thoughts did that to him many times. He surveyed the place. People were bustling through the shops and restaurants. It was night, the bars were filled with young and old the same. Ever since he was dismissed as Anbu a few days back, Guy seemed to be too overjoyed. He had practically pounced on him out of nowhere and begged for a challenge or dragged him to some food stalls or bars. Kakashi did try to not indulge with him on any occasion, but his self-proclaimed rival had a persistent nature. So he kept an eye out for any sight of green, so that he could leave without getting caught. Guy often lost in their matches but had a godly ability to locate Kakashi no matter how hard Kakashi tried. Or maybe... just... maybe... Kakashi didn't try enough... What was he thinking? It was Guy. Oh he tried his best to keep away. It was good to have his company at times, he admitted. But he didn't have enough energy to handle Guy every day. If that green beast caught him today it would be a whole week of springtime of youth. That, was enough springtime for his entire life, he decided.

He turned at the corner of the ramen stand and halted. His lone eye fell on darker ones. He knew those eyes, how they glinted violet at times, how they hid the current of emotions and how they would overcome with the same current sometimes. Those dark eyes were startled, just as much as he was. He felt, rather saw them scrutinize him overall. Searching and inspecting. Once again they landed on his, still inspecting. Then satisfied. And then those dark violet orbs went soft. His name was called out cheerfully and the charm that his mind had cast on himself shattered.

"Kakashi," she called out with a pleasant smile. And he realized he didn't remember what he was thinking moments ago.

"Yo!" he greeted with a crinkled eye.

"Did you eat yet? I was at gates when this really delicious aroma got my attention. I hope the taste meets up to its expectation. I am really starving. Just this smell worked up my appetite." Then she sniffed deeply. Then with a dreamy look in her eyes, she stepped into the street that Kakashi just turned from. Kakashi's brain did not register his steps following her until she stopped after few steps. Then she turned to him. That's when he really looked at her. The red fangs on her cheeks were slightly faded. She was in her casual attire and her hair had been neglected a little in the haste of searching for the said aroma. She entered the ramen shop, they were standing in front of.

"What's that I smell?" He heard her say. The owner mumbled a response and it seemed Kishi had made the choice. She peeked out from the curtains, at him. "You coming?" she inquired with raised eyebrows.

Kakashi was alert on details today, maybe his mind didn't have enough work to do today.

"Sure, if you are treating." He said occupying the seat next to her.

"In that case, see you later. Kakashi." She smiled sweetly, her eyes full of humour. He chuckled. Kishi always had quick bold responses ready to be spilled.

"Welcome. Never had you here before." The owner greeted him. "Good timing, though. We just prepared new batch of chashu pork and shoyu broth as well."

Both of them ordered right away.

"Inuzuka-san," the owner chatted as he prepared their dishes. "You should have brought your friend along earlier. You are alone whenever you visit. Or did you not quite like the taste here?"

"I won't complain about the taste, Teuchi-san. In fact, just the smell of chashu worked up my appetite toady." Kishi laughed.

Such sharp nose had its own perks, Kakashi thought idly. Perhaps he never fully utilized abilities of his own nose.

"You see, Teuchi-san, my friend here used to be real cocky..." she glanced his way as she dragged the word and giggled, then continued "But now that he has learned his manners, it's easy to convince him."

At this the owner laughed a little, and served their dishes. "Well then thank you for coming here today. I hope you like it."

Kakashi thanked the owner, as he left to attend to other customers. Then he turned to Kishi, who had her mouth stuffed with noodles, already.

"I am cocky?" He questioned.

She simply giggled. Kakashi waited for her to talk again. When she finally gulped it down, she smirked again.

"I said you used to be..." Then she proceeded with her ramen, as if she explained it clearly and there was nothing to say.

Following her, he focused on his own bowl. Well, he used to be an arrogant ass, but he wasn't cocky. If anyone was cocky that would be Ibiki, he thought stuffing his own mouth. Placing his mask in place he glanced at Kishi. She was engrossed in her ramen. Kishi was the only person who had never... ever... tried peeking whenever they ate together. Rarely, even Guy would try to catch a glimpse of his face and he won't be subtle about it one bit, so it was easy. Kishi, on the other hand had eaten with him many times, and she refused to even glance at him when they were eating. But Kakashi wasn't complaining. He was just curious, did she know his face? Or was she simply not interested?

He was absently clicking his chopsticks when she reached out with pork slices and dropped them in his bowl.

"Is this the reward for 'learning my manners'? Huh?" Kakashi taunted, accepting the meat.

At that Kishi looked at him. "Just let it go for once, will you?" she laughed.

"I am just saying. Don't go considering me as a dog greedy for rewards"

"Sure." And with that she refocused on her food. Kakashi sighed and heard her giggle. She seemed in a good mood tonight.

"What's my score today?" he asked completely aware that Kishi knew what he was talking about.

"One... so far" she chuckled, slurping her noodles.

He was still in debt for her prank, Kakashi remembered. It would be rude to not pay her back.

He pulled his mask down and placed it on his chin.

"So..." he started, but paused to take a morsel in his mouth, slurping the ramen. Clearly giving away that his mask was removed and there was a window to peek, as he glanced at her through corners of his eyes.

Kishi stopped chewing as soon as she heard him, even before he made any noise. She listened intently as he slurped, then gripped her chopsticks.

'Oh...she is interested...' he thought, a little amused. At the same time he admired her self-constraint. Satisfied with the results of his little experiment, he pulled his mask up. Now, being eager would be risky.

"How's Itachi doing?" he continued.

Still looking over the counter, with her mouth full she replied "He's... okay I guess. It becomes hard sometimes. I mean he won't talk about it, but it shows. And even if we know how it gets... we are just as clueless."

Yeah... they both knew how it gets. They were quiet for a while. After Rin, Kakashi didn't had courage to approach, let alone console Kishi. She had done that for him after Obito. And when Kakashi was coming to terms with Rin's... accident, she left the village for more than a year. Only to come back with her own trauma. And Kakashi didn't help her in that time. Kishi was just as isolated as Kakashi was. But he was afraid to even ask. The few scars that he had seen on her shoulder and biceps were brutal enough to tell the story. Kakashi didn't want her to relive or remember that hell.

"What about you?" he asked.

"What about me?" She asked slurping noisily.

"I mean... We never really talked about it but... how are you?" Kakashi didn't really know how to put it. Her capture happened years back. It didn't make any sense to talk now but, he wanted to know.

She waited a beat. "I am fine Kakashi. Good. Really" she said looking at her bowl.

"I meant, you didn't talk much about your injuries... from back then. I was... if you don't mind talking that is" he said, finishing up.

"Are you done?"

"Yeah." He mumbled with his mouth full.

Kishi then turned towards him, smiling. "Yeah, I'm fine. That was worst you know. But now, I am completely healed. It doesn't hurt to talk about it, so I'm good...I guess. Besides, Ibiki and Tokuma nagged at Inoichi sensei and sensei had us follow a training schedule strictly, during my... 'vacation'. Ibiki was injured about the same time, became bald and all..." She waved her hand in front of him "But yeah I'm... over it." She then gave him another smile.

Kakashi reached out and placed his hand over Her's, turning his body to face her, as he felt her cold fingers. Her smile grew and she took his hand, placing it on her cheek, as if it rightly belonged there, holding it there. Then giggled as she snuggled into it.

This.

Kakashi had remembered this from time to time. When he saw blood on his hand, he would force his brain to remember this, when he had seen his sensei's limp dead body, when he wondered about her being alive long back he had desperately wished to see this.

Kakashi held his hand there, caressing her clan marking with his thumb. "Sorry... it took me long enough to ask..." he confessed with a small voice.

"I don't think it would have went this well, if you had asked sometime earlier" she assured as she let is hand go.

Well aware of the fact that his hand was free, Kakashi did not want to let go yet. He was sure any more than this and the owner would see them. But his hand refused to let go. He wanted to protect this smile that portrayed how content Kishi felt. He didn't want to remember any other things this hand had done so far, except this.

Teuchi loudly cleared his throat beside his ear. Kakashi withdrew his hand with high speed almost knocking the chopstick container down, facing away from the owner. Kishi froze for a moment, then in a haste ordered for seconds. Pleased, the owner asked if Kakashi would also like a refill and he merely waved at the owner smiling.

Once they were left alone, Kishi laughed silently.

"You panicked..."

"I was just startled... That sound rang directly in my ear. It startled me." Kakashi defended.

"You panicked..." Kishi doubled over the laughter with Kakashi joining in.

They talked while Kishi finished her refill, about him continuing as a jounin instructor. Kakashi felt sad when he realized he won't be able to see Kishi as often now that he was dismissed from Anbu. No longer would he know if Kishi is in the village or out on a mission. And they would meet only when they would cross their ways by chance, like in a market on her day off. He simply wished he would meet her more often, he hoped he would be able to help her and be there for her, even if they don't see each other that often. Rather he decided to make sure the distance between them didn't grow.

It was past midnight when they decided to get going. The market had settled for the night. Almost all the shops and stands were closing when they got out of the ramen stand. Once they were outside, Kakashi started to walk assuming Kishi would fall in step with him.

"Where are you off to?" Kishi inquired.

Confused Kakashi turned. Three hawks were circling in the sky. It was the summons for the Anbu.

"Oh yeah... you don't need to anymore. I forgot" Kishi said.

"Well, technically, I didn't return my stuff yet. So might as well tag along" Kakashi shrugged as they both took to the roofs.

"I am just glad I had the refill, it was good." Kishi said. But as they were running towards the Anbu quarters, Kakashi saw how Kishi slipped into the work mode. The walls that were down for last two hours were starting to go up. And it was how every shinobi had to work, knowing they had no choice than to get their hands coloured in blood. But it was more than that in case of Kishi. Those walls around her only lowered when she wanted them to. Only few people were allowed inside that wall. That was the reason Kishi never really bothered with other people.

"Do you have a change?" He asked referring to her clothes.

"Yeah I have one in the locker." She assured him as the entered the locker rooms. They headed for the lockers. He put on a metal jacket over his shirt and headed for the entrance where Kishi was already waiting. As Kakashi approached, he saw the walls were up and secured, her eyes void of any thought or emotion as she put the mask in place...

.

.

.

The Uchiha district was dead silent, literally. The entire Uchiha clan was annihilated.

By Itachi.

While Kakashi was having a meal with Kishi, Itachi was killing his clan. Kakashi won't have believed it, but every member of the clan was verified. Only one body was missing—Itachi's. Yugao had confirmed one sole survivor—Sasuke – Itachi's otouto, unconscious.

Kakashi could not think of any reason that led Itachi to take such actions. Why was the only question that his mind was trying to find answers to.

Now he had even failed as a captain. How would he work as a jounin instructor if he could not even mentor his team properly. Only thing he could figure out was Itachi did not recover well from Shisui's death. Perhaps he was angry that his clan doubted him for his friend's death. But this was just a hunch based on the guess that the Third had shared with him.

Kishi seemed sceptical while they were ordered to verify the bodies, but Itachi's appearance and threat to Danzo had silenced her. He was wondering, how was she holding up.

He entered the locker room and sat down. Everybody was given one more name to be added to their own bingo book. His thoughts were going in circles as Tenzou approached him.

"That was horrible...Who would've thought Itachi would do such a thing." Tenzou said. He seemed slightly shaken.

"I should have mentored him better." Kakashi sighed.

"Senpai... he had more darkness in his heart than we would have imagined." Tenzou said patting his shoulder.

Darkness. That was what the Third was talking about, perhaps. If so, then everyone in Anbu had some darkness latched on to their heart, that abled them to execute the Anbu missions. He glanced at Tenzou. Tenzou was an experiment of Orochimaru. That was his darkness, the suffering he had to undergo when the snake sannin was torturing him. He had the guilt of becoming a reason for his friends' death as his darkness.

Kishi walked through the locker room doors and Kakashi wondered what was the darkness that her heart was suffering from. She had never known her parents. In a way she was like Tenzou. No... no... she was like Naruto, who would grow up never knowing his parents just like Kishi. He simply had no idea about what weighted her down.

This incident, with Itachi, would be the one that will be added to her darkness as well as his. For the entire night, he had blamed himself and asked for forgiveness. Blaming himself until now had given him same results over and over. This time he would change, he would desperately try to be better. And he won't do this alone this time. After all, he promised to be there for her. He would not let any darkness as big as this control him or Kishi. He won't let their hearts succumb to darkness. He still had people to protect. And he won't let the fate repeat, not this time.

"Try to not think a lot about it, Tenzou", he squeezed his shoulder as he got up. "Get some rest"

He approached the bench, Kishi sat hunched over on, her hair covering her face as her head hung low, elbows on knees. She looked so... defeated. Kishi did not look up when he reached her. So, he crouched down, cupping her face like he had a few hours ago. She didn't raise her head, instead held his hand just as she had few hours ago, holding his fingers in her hand and squeezing them. She was in pain, yet was aware of his suffering as well. Kakashi placed his other hand on her knee, conveying he was with her. And to his surprise she assured the same to him, as she moved her head and kissed the palm of his gloved hand...once...twice. Then she raised her head slowly, and looked at him. There were traces of tears in her eyes, that she didn't dare to spill.

He saw betrayal etched in her eyes and she saw guilt in his.

Yet Kakashi strengthen his grip on her knee.

They were in this together...
