EngSinga: Fire

Arthur's eyes snapped open when he felt the phone vibrate under him. He quickly shut off the alarm and turned to Simha, who was still sleeping peacefully. Arthur sighed, before he stood up. He took his phone with him, in case his usual alarm went off as well. He woke up extra early for one special reason: he was going to make breakfast for Simha's birthday.

Arthur nodded to himself as he turned on the stove. This would be the best breakfast that Simha ever had.

Simha awoke to the scent of smoke and Arthur screaming 'fire'. Simha jumped out of bed and ran towards the kitchen, where the smoke came from. He could indeed see a fire on the stove, and it looked as though the fire was contained in a frying pan. He grabbed the oven mitts and put them on, before he took the frying pan outside.

He crouched down on the porch and turned the frying pan upside-down, the first thing he thought to do. He didn't know what kind of fire it was, and didn't want to take chances. The best he could do was smother the fire. After about a minute, he lifted the frying pan. The fire was gone, and something black remained. He turned to Arthur, who stood at the kitchen door.

"What happened?" Simha asked.

"I… I just wanted to cook you some breakfast," Arthur said weakly. "Happy birthday."

It took Simha a few seconds to understand exactly what Arthur was saying, and he sighed.

"I'm more than happy with cereal," Simha said. "Are you hurt?"

Arthur shook his head, but tears were begging to fall. Simha didn't know if it was out of frustration or guilt or shame or fear. Simha sighed again and pulled Arthur into a hug.

"I appreciate the sentiment," Simha whispered. "And I'm glad you're safe."

The prompt is: 'Imagine it's Person B's birthday so Person A wakes up extra early to bring them breakfast in bed. Turns out, Person A has a special skill for burning and ruining any meal they try to create. Cue Person A running in to their room yelling, "FIRE" while Person B runs to action and assures Person A that they would rather have cereal anyway.'

This prompt was made for England.
