BulBela: Being Careful
Dimitri and Natalya were walking down the street, arm in arm. They were just enjoying each other's company for the moment. They passed by a group of burly men. Dimitri felt himself tense for a moment, memories from his high school days flooding back to him, but the moment quickly passed. Or so he thought.
"Hey, pretty lady!" one of the men catcalled. "Why don't you dump that shrimp and hang out with real men?"
Dimitri felt himself flush, and he adjusted his hold on Natalya so that his arm was around her shoulders instead. She clutched his shirt, and the men laughed.
"Just ignore them," Dimitri whispered.
That proved hard to do, as the men started to follow them.
"Come on, a pretty little thing like you can do way better than this pathetic loser," another one of the men said.
Dimitri started to feel Natalya shaking, and he looked over his shoulder at the men.
"Could you just leave us alone?" Dimitri shot back. "Can't you see you're upsetting my fiancée?"
"What are you going to do about it, shortie?" the third man asked.
Dimitri narrowed his eyes. He wasn't that short – probably just average – but these guys were relative giants. And they seemed to think that it made it okay to insult Dimitri.
Natalya's grip on his shirt tightened, and one look at her showed that he needed to get these men away.
"Listen, if you don't back off now, you're going to regret it," Dimitri said. "This is your last warning."
"Ooh, a warning," the first guy mocked. "Do you think you're some brave knight protecting her?"
Dimitri raised his eyebrow, a light smirk tugging his mouth.
"I'm not protecting her," Dimitri said. "I'm protecting you, by holding her back. You should have seen what happened to the last guy that insulted me. I think he needed about thirty-eight stitches. Nat over here can be very dangerous if she has sharp objects."
Dimitri removed their house keys from his pocket and held it out to Natalya while removing his arm from around her shoulders. She accepted the keys, and for the first time turned to face the three men. They actually took a step backward when they saw the expression on her face, and Dimitri was sure that they realised that he was serious just by looking at Dimitri's face as well.
Natalya moved fast, and within about a second, one of the keys was jabbed into the arm of one of the men, who had instinctively raised his arm to block the lunge to his eye. She then kicked him in the stomach, sending him backwards, before she whirled around and threw a punch in the face of the second guy. The third guy had already started to run away, with his two friends following. Natalya huffed, looked at the keys, and removed a wet-wipe from her purse. She proceeded to wipe the keys while returning to Dimitri.
"I hate catcallers," she said.
"Agreed," Dimitri said. "Shall we go home?"
I posted the first chapter of Mystery of Vargas Manor yesterday, so feel free to check it out.
