Chapter 19

July 2000

Summary:

After the rave, Emily wakes up next to a dead body. Nikolas, Lucky, and Elizabeth help cover it up. Elizabeth feared Emily had been raped and encouraged her to go to a clinic for an exam. They are relieved to learn Emily was not attacked. The friends blast Juan for ditching Emily and kissing Allison. Emily received a blackmail message, "I saw what you did last Friday," from an unknown female caller. The four friends panic and vow to stick together.

Sonny and Carly continued to grow closer, and Carly began to hope that they may have a future together. Carly misinterprets a few intimate moments between Sonny and Elizabeth. She overreacts, goes after Elizabeth, and tells Lucky. She moves out. Lucky also misreads the interaction. Lucky continues to be inconsistent in his feelings toward Elizabeth.

Mike gets in deep with his gambling debts. Sorel is behind thugs threatening Mike. Taggert and Hannah rescue him. Mike refuses to file a complaint. He goes to Roy for help.

7/1-31/2000

Dara informed Taggert that Ted Wilson, an undercover cop, was missing.

Lucky and Nikolas dispose of Ted's body and store it in an old freezer at Wyndmere.

Lucky, Emily, and Elizabeth are at Kelly's. The blackmailer called, and she asked for $5,000. Elizabeth suggested that they go to Sonny for help. Emily said no, she didn't want his help. Lucky said Nikolas can quickly get $5,000. Lucky speculated that the blackmailer must be an amateur, or she would have asked for more money. With Nikolas' help, Lucky planned on catching the blackmailers themselves while exchanging money.

Helena reminds Lucky that he must cut Elizabeth loose so she'll be free to be with Nikolas.

Elizabeth is hurt and confused when Lucky does another abrupt about-face, icily reminding her that they are through.

Sonny encounters a heartbroken Elizabeth on the docks and listens sympathetically to her tale of woe while a jealous Carly watches. Carly has seen enough and leaves. Elizabeth says, "It's like this game from grade school. 'He loves me, he loves me not,' That's what it's like with Lucky. One minute, he loves me, but suddenly, he doesn't." Sonny tells her that when a person wants out of a relationship, you must let them go. He says if Lucky says they are over, perhaps she should believe him and let him go. "Yeah, it's time. I can't deal with the back and forth,"

Carly whines to Leticia, "I could take some lessons from Liz, the "Master Manipulator." She was hanging all over Sonny, crying buckets. He would rather be with Little Miss Goody Two Shoes."

Lucky and Nikolas argue about Elizabeth. Nikolas says, "Lucky, if you don't care about Liz anymore, you wouldn't push her toward someone else; you'd just set her free. How would you feel if she left Port Charles or went to Milan or away to art school? Could you deal with that?"

Elizabeth meets Lucky and Nikolas at Kelly's. She tells Lucky she's letting go of her unrealistic dreams about them getting back together. Lucky looks stunned.

Emily tells Lucky and Nikolas she wants to go to the cops. Lucky and Nikolas offer to go to the PCPD and investigate why no one has reported him missing.

After talking with a worried Emily, Elizabeth decides it's time to let Sonny know about the problem with the blackmailer. Elizabeth waits for Sonny outside his PH. She goes over the various scenarios of asking for Sonny's help with what happened at the rave and the dead body. Sonny exits the elevator and invites her inside. Elizabeth struggles with the words, and Sonny comforts her. Unknown to Sonny, Carly entered the PH hours earlier and walked in to see the embrace.

Carly goes off on Elizabeth at the penthouse. She throws accusations around about her trying to get into Sonny's bed and that now that the baby is dead, Sonny is a free man. She says, "Does Lucky know that you are trying to shack up with Sonny every chance you get? Jason's not here, so you go after Sonny? Lucky isn't good enough for you?"

Sonny tells her to shut up and apologizes to Elizabeth. Elizabeth does not want to discuss what happened at the rave while Carly is there. She looks at Carly and says, "You have got this all wrong. Sonny, thank you. I'll tell you later."

Sonny confronts Carly. She says, "When you look at Elizabeth, you see a sweet girl, but when you look at me, you see trash. Michael and I are moving out."

Elizabeth goes back to Kelly's. She tells her what happened at Sonny's. "Em, I tried telling Sonny about the rave, but Carly interrupted and went psycho on me! She accused me of sleeping with Sonny."

Emily laughs, "You and Sonny? He's old!"

"He's not that old, but I know what you mean." They both laugh.

Nikolas and Lucky tell them about Ted. They have a theory that someone followed Emily, and Ted then killed him after she had passed out. They said that the murderer probably thought it would be more profitable to blackmail Emily rather than kill her. The blackmailer called again. She wants ten thousand more. Elizabeth worries that one of them might be the next victim.

Carly went into Kelly's looking for Elizabeth. They get into a heated argument about Sonny and Jason. Lucky told Carly to back off. Carly asked her if Lucky knew whose lap she was sitting on Monday night. Carly said Lucky should know that Elizabeth is throwing herself at Sonny behind Lucky's back. Elizabeth challenged Carly and said she wasn't afraid of her and that if she had a problem, she should go after her, not drag Lucky into her jealous mind. Elizabeth walked out. Lucky asked Carly not to go near Elizabeth again. Lucky left.

Elizabeth tripped on the stairs at the docks. Sonny came up and asked her if he could help. Elizabeth apologized to Sonny for fighting with Carly. Sonny told Liz that Carly's actions were unacceptable and wouldn't happen again. They laughed over her shoes, and Lucky approached Sonny and Liz, "I guess what Carly said was true."

"Lucky, nothing Carly said was true. Sonny and I are friends, that's all."

Elizabeth bristles when Lucky reminds Sonny that every woman he's been with has met with tragedy.

"Lucky you aren't being fair or have the right to insert yourself into who I can be friends with. Why do you care? We aren't a couple. I'm not the same person from over a year ago. Sonny was there for me when we thought you were dead. I don't need your approval."

While waiting to catch the blackmailer, Lucky asks Nikolas about Jason. "Listen, I overheard you talking to Elizabeth about Jason staying in her studio last winter. Is there a story?"

"Lucky, ask Elizabeth. It's not my place."

"Emily said the same thing."

"Look, I'm not a fan of Jason's, but Elizabeth has read me the riot act more than once regarding Jason. If you want to know more, talk to her."

A young woman reaches for the bag, and Nikolas quickly prevents her from taking it. He asks how she knows Emily. The girl claims she knows no one named Emily and went for the bag because she was hungry and looking for food.

August 2000

Summary:

Alexis moves into Jason's PH.

Roy agrees to help Mike pay off his gambling debt. Roy offers Sorel a down payment, but Sorel will only accept money from Mike or Sonny. Carly thinks she is helping Sonny by helping Mike with his debts, but she digs a deeper hole, making matters worse. Carly explained to Sonny her plan to catch Sorel and put him away for good. Sonny bitterly informed Carly that her good intentions meant nothing since her lies were about to send him to prison for a crime he hadn't committed.

She says, "Can't you see that everything I did was for you?" Carly was also pissed because Sonny would not give her credit for trying to help him. Though a tearful Carly begged forgiveness, Sonny insisted he could never trust her again.

Alexis suggests Sonny marry Carly to prevent her from testifying against him. Neither party likes the idea.

Gia is Emily's blackmailer. She was blackmailing her because, as a Quartermane, she had money and left the rave with a stranger. She doesn't know anything about Ted's murder. She panics when she sees Taggert, but Lucky covers for her. Nikolas later notices Gia hiding from Taggert and assists her in keeping her hidden. Gia agrees to help the four friends, and they encounter drug dealer Zander. Emily clues Juan in about what happened at the rave.

Helena continues to control Lucky, but friends notice his behavior and are troubled by it.

8/1-29/2000

Elizabeth tells Lucky about what happened with Jason last winter. "Lucky, Jason was a good friend to me. He, Sonny, Emily, and Nikolas got me through this past year."

"What about Jason? Do you have feelings for him?"

"Why should you care? You said you don't want me. You keep pushing me toward Nikolas. I am not interested in your brother."

"You didn't answer my question."

"Jason isn't here. If he were, I don't know. He's only shown friendship toward me." Elizabeth holds back telling Lucky about the brief kiss Jason gave her since she doesn't know if it meant anything to him.

"I guess I should be grateful you had someone to support you after my "death." Lucky still cannot explain his feelings towards Elizabeth and why she belongs with Nikolas.

Helena grows tired of Lucky's attitude and uses the mind control phrase, protect your queen. Lucky becomes Helena's pet again and assures her that he is not the one spying on her.

At Kelly's, Nikolas suggested they stop fighting and become the people Lucky wants them to be. Lucky would surely get jealous and want her back if they pretended to be boyfriend and girlfriend. Elizabeth says, "No, I'm moving on. I'm not playing those games anymore."

At the rave, Gia tells Nikolas that Elizabeth was talking to Zander, the guy she saw in the parking lot. She explained she had followed Emily and Ted to the hotel. Elizabeth asked Zander if he knew anything about Ted or his whereabouts.

Zander became suspicious of Elizabeth's questions about Ted. Lucky intervened to get her away from Zander. Lucky told her Zander was Ted's killer. They left the rave, and as Gia tried to leave, Zander appeared and asked her about her new friends. When Gia could not ignore Zander's questioning, she began to act like she had taken drugs, although this did not detour Zander, who put the pieces together and remembered he had seen Gia in the hotel parking lot the night he had followed Ted. Gia quickly got away by telling Zander she felt ill and needed to leave.

Back at Kelly's, they tell Emily that they have found Zander. Elizabeth thanks Lucky for coming to her rescue and saving her from Zander. Emily thanks everyone for their help at the rave. Emily assures Elizabeth that Lucky is still in love with her.

"Em, please stop. Lucky would have done that for anyone. He would have done that for you. I will not allow Lucky to treat me the way he has been since his return. He is our friend, and I don't want to lose that, but we are not a couple."

Lucky and Nikolas realized that Zander was a drug dealer and that Ted had been undercover to build a case against him. If Zander recognized Gia, she is in danger. They agree to tell Gia the truth about Ted's murder.

Gia arrived at Kelly's and demanded what they'd been hiding. Nikolas told her about the group's suspicion about Zander and how he is possibly a drug dealer. Gia told Nikolas that this was their problem and to leave her out. She wanted no part of this, especially with any cops. Taggert walked into Kelly's, and Gia pulled Nikolas into a kiss. After Taggert passed by, Gia reiterated to the two that this was their problem, not hers, as she left Kelly's.

Emily tells Lucky she is sick of him avoiding Elizabeth. "You and Liz used to have a storybook romance like Guinevere and Sir Lancelot; you must protect your queen."

After Lucky hears "protect your queen," he zones out completely, and Emily cannot get his attention. Once Emily gets through to Lucky, he reacts defensively but realizes he can't remember what happened. He admits that something is wrong with him. When Elizabeth comes out to find out what is happening, Lucky rudely blows her off.

Lucky was distraught about his lack of memories over the last year. He could only remember a few items of his capture and his captivity. He could remember only the first few weeks, and the rest was just like a black hole with only fragments. He confessed to Emily that he couldn't remember Helena rescuing him. He had no idea how he got from Faison to Helena. Emily promised to help Lucky get to the bottom of his dilemma. Lucky said it wasn't until now that he wanted to remember. She asked Lucky why he must exclude Elizabeth. He does not want to hurt her and needs to find out what is wrong with him. He asked Emily to keep this secret between them.

Elizabeth blew up at Emily when she tried to engineer a conversation between the estranged couple. "The Lucky I knew died, and he's not coming back! I've tried, but he's insisted he is not interested. This Lucky, I don't recognize. Stop interfering."

The group goes to another rave. While Nikolas and Lucky argued about Elizabeth, she was talking with Zander. Zander offered her water that he had drugged earlier. Elizabeth spills the water on Zander and apologizes. He angrily hands her the bottle and says, "Drink."

"You drink first. My father told me never to take a drink from a stranger."

"Fine, let's get out of here to talk privately."

"No, my father said to never leave with someone you don't know, and I'm not leaving with you."

Lucky finds Elizabeth, and she leaves with him, making Zander angry and suspicious of the group of friends.

Lucky escorted Elizabeth out and read her the riot act as they returned to the studio.

"Lucky, what is your problem? I didn't do anything wrong. He tried to get me to drink water, but I refused. He wanted me to leave, but I refused." Dripping with sarcasm, "Thank you for your amazing rescue, but you can leave now."

Lucky explained to his friends how they could frame Zander for Ted's murder.

Elizabeth says, "That is an insane plan. It would never work, and we would get in deeper with the cops. I want to go to Sonny. He would know what to do."

The others decided to forge ahead anyway with their plan to frame Zander for murder.

Jason Returns!

8/27/2000

After recovering from the shock of Jason's sudden reappearance, Carly threw her arms around him and explained how much she'd missed him. Carly told a sympathetic Jason how she'd lost the baby. Later, unable to stem her tears, Carly asked Jason why he'd left her.

Jason counts to ten, "Carly, I'm sorry for everything that's happened to you, but I left for several reasons. I can't always be there to clean up after you. I wanted Michael to know AJ. That never would have happened if I stayed. You continued to bring Michael to me to get him to stop crying or to get him to sleep. You wouldn't give AJ a chance. You showed up on my doorstep every chance you got. I'm glad Sonny has been there for you, and I'm sorry about your loss, but give up the notion I'm back to be with you. I'm going to see the Quartermaines later, and I'll check in with AJ. I hope you've been adhering to the custody agreement."

Carly cries, "So you left because of me? This is all my fault?"

Jason swallows, "No, I left for other reasons, too. If I stayed, I would have endangered people I care about."

"But Jason, I need you. Sonny doesn't appreciate my help. He yells a lot."

Sonny returned to his PH and found Jason visiting with Michael and Carly.

Later, Sonny and Jason discussed the death of the baby, and Sonny told Jason that Carly had helped him through a difficult time. Sonny told Jason his story about his arrest and how Carly was involved. Sonny says that he could never trust Carly again. Sonny catches Carly eavesdropping on his and Jason's conversation. Sonny reminded a fuming Carly that since he couldn't trust her anymore, he and Jason would discuss their business elsewhere.

Jason turned down their invitation to sleep over and headed to Jake's for the night.

With Jason's return, the "New Reality" begins.

8/31/2000

Elizabeth takes the steps from the docks and hears her name. She knows the voice. She smiles and turns. Jason says, "Hi!"

Elizabeth runs into Jason's arms and says, "Jason, you're back."

Jason smiles and holds Elizabeth in his arms. He doesn't want to let her go. He wants to tell Elizabeth how much he's missed her. They have a lot to catch up on. Elizabeth rambles and says, "A lot has happened since you left. Emily really needs you. Can I call her? Is it okay to let her know you are back?"

Jason nods yes, of course. He's concerned. Sonny didn't mention anything. Jason waits while Elizabeth places the call and thinks, "She is more beautiful and grown up." He misses the long, curly hair, but she looks good in short hair. She would look good in anything. He laughs, listening to Elizabeth ordering his sister to the Elm Street Pier, insisting she ditch Juan and not tell anyone where she is going. He can't believe Emily is still seeing that guy. Jason wants to know why his sister needs him, but Elizabeth says, "I'll let Emily tell you. Remember when we sat on this bench, and you said goodbye? I said no, see you later. What have you been up to?"

"I thought a lot about you since I left." He asks about her painting and her classes. She says her courses are okay, and she is still painting, but she still thinks the painting of "The Wind" is her best. Jason tells what he can of where he's been and says he only saw the Wind when he was with her. Elizabeth blushes.

Jason watches Elizabeth avoid some of his questions. Something is wrong, he thinks. He says, "Are you Okay?"

Elizabeth shrugs and replies, "It's challenging since Lucky came home."

Jason feels gut-punched. "What did you say? Lucky came home?"

Elizabeth explains that Fiason took Lucky and faked his death. Elizabeth rationalizes that Helena 'rescued' Lucky, but now that Lucky is back, he doesn't love her anymore. Jason doesn't understand how that could happen. He hadn't known Elizabeth like Lucky did, but there was no way he'd fall out of love with her. Jason wishes he could make her feel better but knows he can't and only listens. He remembers Lucky Spencer and wonders why his death was faked and for what purpose. Now that Elizabeth said Lucky was alive, all he could think was, the little fucker better not hurt her.

Before Jason can comment, Emily arrives to see the brother who left months earlier. Emily hugs him, and Jason wants to fix whatever has his sister trembling like she is. Emily looks at Elizabeth, who nods, indicating that Emily should tell Jason what is wrong. Before Emily can tell Jason what happened at the Rave, Lucky arrives. Jason watches Lucky act happy to see him. He thinks, "There is something off about Lucky."

After pretending to be happy to see Jason, Lucky cuts Emily off, saying they are going to Kelly's. He does not want her talking to her brother, especially about the rave. Elizabeth is pissed; she says, "Lucky, this is the first time Emily's had to see Jason."

Lucky insists they go to Kelly's, but Jason offers to take Emily to Kelly's after visiting with her, and Elizabeth tries leading Lucky away. Jason even counters Lucky's snark that it's not as if Jason is going anywhere; he can catch up with his sister anytime and digs back, saying it's not like Kelly's Diner is going anywhere. Just as Elizabeth is about to make headway into convincing Lucky that if he wants to go to Kelly's, he will go alone without them, Sonny interrupts.

Emily and Elizabeth say goodbye, and Jason watches them leave as Lucky follows but glares at him. Jason says, "Sonny, what the fuck! What is wrong with Lucky? He doesn't want me talking to my sister."

"I think it's more about what Carly told Lucky about what happened last winter. He also has a beef with me regarding my friendship with Elizabeth. I'll catch you up on everything. Let me buy you a drink."
