The party had taken up a good portion of the day, but first chance Jayne got she looked at the newspaper. She read the retraction but also read a dig at Holly. She was fed up. She could not help but be protective of her family.
She found herself at The Invader and once again with Jackie. "What do you have against me?"
Jackie looked up and rolled her eyes. "Oh great, it's you."
"Yes, it's me. Again, I'll ask, what do you have against me?" Jayne repeated herself.
"Actually, nothing. I just wish my son had better taste in the company he keeps." Jackie's tone was cold. "You know he's getting married. Maybe you can find someone else to play your hero. Have more self-respect than your mother did all those years ago."
Jayne knew she was getting this because Jackie was still bitter, and this confirmed it. "Is that what this is all about? My father chose my mother over you over forty years ago, and you are still stuck?" Jayne could not believe it.
"Your mom conned him into choosing her. She played the whole "I need help, help me, Robert, " and the fool fell for it. My son is no fool and is sure as hell not going to be conned on my watch." Jackie stated.
"Chase is a friend, and that friendship means a lot to me. I would never hurt him, and I'm happy for him and Brook." Jayne told her, truthfully, it made her sad, but she wanted the best for him.
"Then why don't you stay away from him? Break the cycle of being a homewrecker." Jackie knew those words would get a reaction. She just wasn't sure what kind.
"I'm sorry, was there even a home to wreck? From what my father told me, you two were not even serious. You wanted it to be, but he wasn't ready until, of course, my mum made him see things differently." Jayne replied.
Jackie was stunned as she looked up at Jayne. "How dare you comment on something you know nothing about! Your mother sabotaged any chance Robert and I had!"
Holly had been standing outside the door. She knew Jayne was handling it but couldn't let her fight this when she had absolutely nothing to do with it. She decided to make her presence known. "Enough!"
