Shinji is lying in bed listening to his SDAT on its lowest volume. With the stifling heat the door is open, he's wearing only sleep-shorts and partly covered by the thinnest sheet in a probably pointless attempt to convince his body he's in bed and should sleep.
Asuka had been standing in his doorway for nearly five minutes now while he kept his eyes lightly closed and pretended not to know. It was a strange sensation, letting the familiar music disconnect his awareness from the world and his own sense of self, while still being hyper-aware of the drop of sweat inching down her side.
"Shinji, I'm" she started.
'I'm sorry. I was wrong. I jumped to conclusions. I should have known better. I need you. I need sleep. I care.' None of which she could say. None of which she needed to right now. All of which would be needed later.
"I'm here." she finally managed a minute later.
Shinji carefully put his SDAT on the bedside table and slid over to make room.
With two people in the tiny windowless room it would be even hotter.
They slept.
