Derek considered not answering the door, but his curiosity got the best of him. Besides, maybe the visit was about Hank. He shot a glance back at the sleeping Penelope before opening the door.

"It's a little late for a visit, Counselor."

"You going to invite me in, Agent?"

Derek shot a quick glance over his shoulder then back at the attorney.

"Now is not a good time. What's so important that it can't wait until morning?"

Artemis had followed Derek's glance and realized that he had company. This could prove to his advantage.

"Let's just say, I wanted to congratulate you on a battle well fought. I'm man enough to admit when I've been beat.

"Can we not do this? If you can just make sure your client has my son ready in the morning, then our business is complete."

"Your son," Artemis chuckled, "your son..."

"Are you trying to tell me something?"

Artemis glanced past Derek before continuing. "Maybe it's time you knew the truth."

A cold chill ran down Derek's spine. There was something dastardly in the man's eyes.

"I'd hate to wake your friend she seems so peaceful lying there," he said as he pulled the gun from his jacket.

Clarion Hotel –

Charles and Lydia sat in disbelief. Det. Baines had just missed Artemis and now after hearing the incredible story from the Hayes, he felt a sense of urgency to call in Agent Hotchner, and his team.

"Agents Hotchner, and Jarreau are headed over," the detective announced as he pocketed his phone.

"What about Derek? He needs to know what's. going on," Charles insisted.

"Agent Rossi and Dr. Reid are headed to his residence; this isn't a conversation to be had over the phone."

"Agreed."

Temporary Home of Derek Morgan –

Penelope was shaken from a deep sleep; she was alone on the couch. Both she and Derek had fallen asleep and now she was alone, and the house was oddly quiet.

"Derek?" She stood and headed toward the kitchen and then the bedrooms, "Derek, where are you?"

Artemis kept the gun trained on Derek as he pulled the car into the driveway. Derek's stomach dropped as he was forced out of the car and up the walkway toward a familiar doorway.

"Why are we here?"

"It's where it all began," the older man chuckled. "Open the door so we can go inside."

Derek did as he was told and the two stepped inside the home where everything had not only begun but where it had ended as well. This was the home where Derek had invited Savannah into his life promising that he was all in. It was the home where their son was brought after his birth, and it was where he found her battered cold body on the night she was killed.

"You'll never understand what a lucky man you were."

Derek turned to face Artemis. The gun was still aimed at him but the look in his eyes was somewhere else. Derek remained silent.

"Do you know who I am... who I was to her?"

"You were her godfather."

An odd cackle bellowed from his chest.

"I was a helluva lot more than that! Godfather...yeah, a helluva lot more!"

"Look man, what's this all about? Is this what you do when you lose a case?"

There was the cackle again.

"You're the reason she's dead!"

"I didn't kill my wife!"

"No, no you didn't."

Clarion Hotel –

Hotch and JJ had arrived and been brought up to speed on Artemis's visit and his admission that he had killed Savannah in a fit of passion. His obsession with the younger woman had driven him to do the unthinkable; her rejection was his justification. Charles and Lydia had been destroyed by the truth and neither of them could help seeing themselves as accomplices in their daughter's murder.

Hotch felt his phone vibrating. He pulled it from his pocket and saw Garcia's name flashing on the screen. He stepped away from the group to answer it.

"Garcia?"

"Hotch, Derek is gone!"

"Maybe he went for a run or..."

"...no, no... I fell asleep and when I woke up he was gone and the front door was partially open...Derek is obsessive about security, he'd never leave the door open...never!"

"Okay, calm down I'm sure there's an explanation..."

"...I've called him a dozen times, Hotch and he's not answering!"

"Do you have your computer?"

"Yes."

"Can you track him?"

"I already did."

Home of Derek and Savannah Morgan –

"You didn't know how to love a woman like Savannah; really love her! You were too busy trying to save the world and..."

"...and what?"

"And chasing behind that blonde computer geek like a sick puppy!"

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"Come on, everyone with half a brain could tell, even your wife but she still wouldn't leave!"

"When did my marriage become your business, old man?"

"I loved Savannah! I was in love with Savannah!"

"You were old enough to be her father! Her parents trusted you with their child, you damn pervert!"

Derek felt the gun slam across the side of his face knocking him to the floor. Then he felt the warm blood trickle down the side of his face.

"I'M NOT A PERVERT! I loved Savannah and I was ready to give her the life and family she deserved! All she had to do was divorce you! She belonged to me! And Hank... he...he was supposed to be my tomorrow!"

"What are you talking about? Hank is my son! What are you saying?"

"I was so happy when she told me she was pregnant," there was that far away look again. "My wife and I were never able to have children; I blamed myself, but when she announced that she was pregnant..."

"...Hank is my son!"

"YOU DON'T DESERVE HANK!"

"Did you kill my wife?"

"How can you tell someone that you love them, that you're having a baby then just take it back?"

"You sick son-of-a-bitch, what have you done?"

"She tried to take it back...you're the reason she's dead," his eyes were filled with rage; the faraway look now gone. "You ruined our lives; you ruined my life! You took the one thing that meant everything to me!"

Things suddenly seemed to morph into slow motion. Derek watched as Artemis raised and aimed the gun at him.

"You don't have to do this."

"But I do, don't you get it? You took Savannah from me," he pulled the trigger, "now I'm going to take your love from you."

Then the room went black.
