The rest of the weekend went by too quickly. This was the first time in a while that Hank and Olivia had only Noah and Rachel in the house and they really enjoyed it. Any cases that SVU had gotten over the weekend, the rest of the squad took care of and Olivia was able to spend time with her husband and their two youngest children.
After thinking about it all weekend, Ed had decided that he wanted to visit Eugene in prison, so Olivia and Diana went with him. Fin and Shauna said they would be fine. When they arrived at the correctional facility where Eugene was, they got out of the vehicle and went in. Ed was taken to a table, while the guard went to get Eugene. Olivia and Diana stayed close by. They both knew Ed had a lot of anger towards Eugene that he needed to get off his chest. He had talked to his family about it and they said they supported whatever decision he made. The guard brought Eugene in and he was surprised to see who his visitor was.
"Eddie, it's good to see you. What brings you here?"
"I have a few things I need to get off my chest."
Eugene recognized Olivia and waved to her.
"Nice to see you again, Lieutenant Benson. I'm glad to see you two are still together."
"We're not."
"You're wearing a wedding ring and so is she."
"This isn't a social call and my personal life is none of your damn business. For once, you're gonna listen to me. They're here to make sure I don't kick your ass and as my witnesses."
"How's the family?"
"What do you care?"
"Oh, that's right, how would you know that? You don't see anyone."
"For your information, I do see them all the time and everyone, including your mother, said you got what you deserved. I am sick and tired of you bullyin' me and blamin' me for everything. You've been doin' this to me since we were kids."
"What do you mean? You bullied me and always blamed me for everything."
"Are you that dumb? You always blamed me for everything you did even when someone saw you do what you blamed me for. I broke my arm because of somethin' you did to me."
"You're making all that up."
"My mother remembers that. I could have lost my job and my pension because of you. You have always been a poor excuse for a human being and how you ever became a priest is beyond me. I'm not perfect and I admit that but you're not the man of God you want everyone to think you are. You did all that as a cover up to get away with whatever you wanted to get away with. As usual, you just hid behind the collar and once again tried blamin' me."
"I'm sorry you feel that way."
"No, you're not. You never gave a damn about me or anyone else in the family. From early on, the only person you cared about was yourself. Have you ever wondered why no one has come to see you until now? Maybe it's because no one actually cares what happens to you."
"Do you even hear yourself? You're the one no one cares about. You've always had issues with everything. It's no wonder why Sharon left you."
"She was the problem not me. What was I supposed to do, stay in a loveless marriage and hope things eventually worked out? That wasn't gonna happen."
"You could have gone to marriage counseling."
"Yeah, like that would have worked. Use your brain."
"You're the one that always blamed everyone else for your problems."
"No, that was you. You broke the vase or whatever it was at Grandma's that time and she saw you do it but as usual, you denied everything just like you are now and put the blame on me. I wasn't even in the room when it happened.
"You probably talked me into doing whatever it was you think I did."
"You are so full of shit! Your behavior then and now is not normal. I may have had problems with some of the cops I had to deal with on the job but the only two people that gave me any problems in my home life were you and Sharon. If you weren't a priest, you two would have been perfect for each other."
"I do hope that poor, unfortunate woman you married sees you for who you really are and leaves you before it's too late. You need help and I will be praying for you to get the help you need."
"You're the one who needs help. You know what, she knows how stubborn I am and she loves me anyway. It actually took me several months to introduce her and her daughter to the family and by then we were already married."
"That poor child has to have you for a father figure."
"I actually love bein' a dad more than I ever thought possible. IF you ever get released, stay away from the family."
"I'm sure my parents would love to see me."
"Actually, no, they wouldn't. We had dinner with them yesterday as a matter of fact and Aunt Kate and Uncle Joe both said if I was comin' here to see you, to tell you that you are the one that disgraced the entire family and they don't care if they ever see you again."
"I'm sure they didn't. You just want everyone to believe your lies about what a terrible person you think I am."
"You are a terrible person and always have been."
"Well, you're already going to Hell for divorcing and you blame an innocent priest for your problems."
"You are not innocent by any means. No one else in the family had a problem with my divorce or with me remarrying because they knew how miserable I was. You don't think you'll end up in Hell for doin' what you did?"
"Of course not."
"Think again, you hypocrite."
"It's all about forgiveness. What did you really come here for, Eddie?"
"I had a lot I needed to get off my chest and I think I did that."
"You always have been and always will be a coward."
Ed had had enough of Eugene's crap, so he got up and started to walk away but he balled his hand into a fist and punched Eugene in the nose as hard as he could. Eugene fell backwards. Neither Olivia nor Diana had expected that to happen but they weren't completely surprised. They both ran over before things got too out of hand. Olivia stood between them and Diana grabbed Ed to try to calm him down.
"You're the one who's a coward."
"I'll pray for you."
"Kiss my ass and go to Hell! Pray for your own damn self."
The 3 of them headed towards the door and had the guard let them out. Ed told the guard what had happened and actually said Eugene deserved it.
"That man wouldn't know the truth if it came up and bit him in the ass."
"Obviously he shows no remorse for what he did."
"That's nothin' new."
"I'm proud of you for how you handled yourself."
"I told him you two were here to make sure I didn't kick his ass. I really tried not to hit him but he pissed me off when he called me a coward. He obviously knew me and Liv were together at the time all this went down."
"We heard that and yes, I know how stubborn you are and Kara and I both love you more than anything."
"I love you both too."
Ed kissed Diana.
"You may be a lot of things, Ed Tucker but being a coward is not one of them. You may not have been "the one" for me but I'm glad you're still in my life. Maybe you were an ass for a lot of years but you've been there for me more times since what happened with Lewis than a certain other person that I used to be partners with ever was. Without mentioning any names."
"He's another one I'd like to punch. He's another coward for doin' things the way he did and never sayin' anything about leavin'."
"Like I have said before, as far as I'm concerned, he is dead to me."
They left and walked to Olivia's SUV. They got in and then headed back to the 16th Precinct. When they got back, they got out of the SUV and went in.
"How'd it go, Tucker?"
"About the way I expected it to. He'll never change. I told him that if he ever gets out, to say away from the family. He basically said I was the one the family didn't care about and not him. It's no wonder Sharon left me."
"Sharon always was a bitch."
"Yeah, I know. I told Eugene that if he wasn't a priest, the two of them would be perfect for each other."
"That's for sure."
"I told him that no one in the family cares what happens to him or wants to see him. He told me I'm goin' to Hell for divorcin' but he doesn't think he did anything wrong when he did what he did. No one else in the family judged me for getting a divorce. No one in the family judged you for raisin' Eddie on your own and no one judged Diana for doin' what she did to have Kara. Yet it's ok for him to judge me for divorcin' a woman who clearly had issues. What did he expect me to do, stay in a loveless marriage and hope things got better? That clearly was not gonna happen. He said we could have tried marriage counseling."
Olivia went to get Ed some ice for his hand.
"Thanks."
"No problem."
"What happened to your hand?"
"He called me a coward, so I punched him in the nose."
"I would have loved to have seen that."
Then Patty came in with Eddie, Beth and Katie.
"They wanted to come see Mommy and Daddy."
"Hey, you three! How was school?"
"Good."
All 3 kids hugged Shauna and Jeff.
"I thought Dad was picking them up."
"He decided to go golfing instead. How'd your visit go, big brother and what happened to your hand or shouldn't I ask?"
"I punched Eugene in the nose. That's how it went. He called me a coward."
"He's the coward, not you."
"He said he doesn't blame Sharon for leavin' me and I'm the one who always blames everyone for my problems. He told me I'm goin' to Hell for gettin' a divorce. Did he want me to stay in a loveless marriage and hope things got better? He said we could have gone to marriage counseling. That wasn't gonna happen."
Ed told Patty everything that had happened.
"When he told you he'd pray for you, you told him to kiss your ass? That's funny."
Then Hank came in with Noah, Rachel, Camille and Jesse. Colleen, Ed Sr., her sister Kate and brother-in-law Joe were with them.
"You're back."
"I am. Hello, my loves."
"Hi Mommy!"
"Gama! Mama!"
"Hey, you!"
"Mama, Daddy!"
Jesse went over to Amanda and Sonny and Hank handed Camille to Erin and kissed Olivia, while Ed filled his parents and aunt and uncle in on what happened at the prison. When Ed said he told Eugene to kiss his ass, Ed Sr. couldn't help but laugh and neither could Joe.
"We cannot apologize enough for everything he has put you through."
"Aunt Kate, it's not your fault. The rest of your kids aren't like that at all. I think he thought he'd always be able to get away with everything and someone else would always take the fall for it. That person was mostly me probably because we were the closest in age. He became a priest to protect his image."
"That's a good way of puttin' it. Honestly, I always thought there was something off with him. Our other kids have always said they would have rather had you as a big brother than Eugene."
"With the exception of him, the rest of us were all pretty close and that includes all the other cousins too."
"Patty's right about that."
Jeff went into Olivia's office and brought one of the chairs out.
"Have a seat, Grandpa Ed."
"Thank you, Jeffrey."
"No problem."
Ed Sr. sat down.
"This one is a keeper."
"I know that, Grandpa. I knew that from the moment we met."
"He's a handsome one."
"Thank you, Aunt Kate. I think so too."
"Do the two of you like working together?"
"We do but we don't work on cases together or anything."
"Did you send Lucy home?"
"She called us and said she wasn't feelin' well this mornin', so we had to take Jesse to your house before we came in."
"She called me right after you left."
"You were already gone by the time we got here."
"Ok."
Everyone talked for a while and then Jay came in.
"Hey, Babe."
"Hey. I got a call from my dad of all people. Will and Nat were in a car accident on their way to Med this morning. They had dropped the kids off at Helen's and this vehicle came out of nowhere and slammed into them. They're both ok but pretty banged up. Nat had to go into surgery for a ruptured spleen but she also a broken leg, a concussion and other cuts and bruises. Will has a broken arm, a minor concussion and other cuts and bruises. I'm headin' to Chicago whether you're goin' with me or not."
"When are you leaving?"
"I still need to go home and I haven't made the arrangements yet."
"I want to go."
"Go, Erin. Camille will be fine with us."
"Thanks."
"Yep. Give Will and Nat our love."
"Ours too."
"We will. Thanks."
Erin grabbed her stuff and then they both gave Camille a kiss and a hug and hugged Hank and Olivia before they headed home to get their stuff. Erin made the arrangements for their flight on the way home. Once they got home, they packed and headed to the airport.
In the meantime, SVU had gotten a call, so they all left and Diana left to head back to her office after she kissed Ed. Ed and Hank took the kids to the Pub for lunch before they headed home. Ed of course had to tell the family at the Pub what had happened with Eugene at the prison. Ed decided to go over to Hank and Olivia's, so he stopped to get Lola and headed over there. When he got there, he rang the doorbell. Hank had just gotten the kids down for their naps and let the dogs out.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"Come on in."
"Thanks."
Ed came in and took his jacket off before he took Lola off her leash. Then Ed and Hank went into the kitchen.
"Am I a bad person for doin' what I did?"
"It sounds like he deserved it to me. What you did is somethin' I would do. The thing is, there are times when I start to lose my temper and want to hit someone or somethin' but I'm really tryin' to be a better person for Olivia and the kids but I also feel like it's my job to protect the people I care about. If that son of a bitch that caused the accident that you and Olivia were in hadn't died, I probably would have gone after him myself."
"I probably would have joined you. He and that other idiot that your former unit located said Olivia only got promoted because she was sleepin' with me but that's not true. Olivia is a good cop and deserved to be promoted. I never saw that until Stabler was gone and after what happened with William Lewis."
"I feel like I would have gone after that Lewis guy too."
"He really did a number on her. She just has a tendency to blame herself when somethin' happens to someone else."
"I know. She blamed herself for what happened to Erin the last time they were in Chicago. I didn't blame her and neither did Jay. We both know it's a part of the job. Not too much scares me but someone threatenin' my family and the thought of havin' to bury another wife does."
"I was goin' crazy when that guy was threatenin' to kill you and Diana at the park. The last thing I wanna do is lose her and I know Liv doesn't wanna lose you either."
"I know. I care about Diana too and always have. She was one of the ones besides Al, Meredith and Trudy that gave me the most support after Camille died. I did what I could to be a father figure to Kara and I know Diana started to develop feelings for me but I don't know that I could have ever felt that way about her. I was never sure I would ever open my heart to another woman again after I lost Camille but then I met Olivia."
"I felt the same way. I was afraid of gettin' hurt again because of what my ex did. Olivia helped me learn to start trustin' people again. I think a part of it was my job was startin' to get to me, so I'm glad I chose to leave IAB."
"I'm glad I retired. I needed to be the dad to Noah and eventually Rachel that I should have been to Justin. Olivia isn't the only one who wonders what could have been. A part of me also wishes she hadn't lost the baby. She or he would have been over a year old. It was hard enough havin' a child born dead and then havin' to bury a grown child is just as hard. That is somethin' no parent ever wants to have to do."
"I can imagine."
"Has that kid that caused Brandon to break his wrist come to see him?"
"Not yet. We invited him and his family to come over soon, so we'll see how that goes. I know the kid feels bad for what happened and we don't blame him. I wish my idiot cousin was like that. He'll never admit he did anything to me. Part of the reason I went there today was to confront him. I do feel a little bit better about it."
Ed got a phone call from Diana.
"Hey, Babe."
"Hey. I need to ask you something."
"Ok."
"Liv talked to Ms. Jackson and found out that the Callaghans, the family that was planning to adopt Brandon's friend Michael, were killed in a car accident this morning. She wanted to know if we would be interested in taking him, since he may deal with things a little better with someone he knows. He won't have to be taken out of his school."
"From talkin' to him when I went to get Brandon when he broke his wrist, he just wants someone to love him. I think we can give him that."
"I think we can too."
"Do they have any other kids?"
"No. According to Liv, they never had kids of their own, which is why they wanted to foster. All the other kids they have had were temporary and ended up going back to their biological parents. Michael seemed to be adjusting pretty well and Ms. Jackson had recently approved them to officially adopt him. I don't know what that would mean for us though."
"He'll need time to adjust to the situation."
"I know he will. Maybe we should talk to Kara about it first."
"I think Kara will be fine. She loves bein' a big sister."
"I know she does. She is growing up so fast. It makes me so sad sometimes because she isn't a baby anymore. She has a boy she likes but I don't think she realized how much she liked him until they were both living here."
"Were they always friends?"
"Yeah. His family lived a few blocks away from us, so they were always playing together at the park. Are you at home?"
"No. After Hank and I took the kids to the Pub for lunch, he took them home and I stopped home to get Lola. Now I'm at their house."
"Ok. Maybe we should see if they have plans for dinner. Liv just came in, so hold on."
"Ok."
Diana asked Olivia if they had plans for dinner and Olivia said she came to ask her the same thing. Diana told her Ed was at their house with Lola anyway.
"Liv invited us to dinner."
"That works. I'm sure Hank won't mind."
"Mind what?"
"Liv invited us to dinner."
"I don't mind."
"He doesn't mind."
"Good. She said Ms. Jackson will be picking Michael up at school."
"I'll be there, since I have to pick Brandon up anyway."
"Do you want me to meet you there? Liv said she wanted to leave early anyway. I could have her drop me off at the school on her way home."
"That works."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
Ed hung up.
"Liv got a call from Ms. Jackson. Michael's foster parents were killed in a car accident this mornin', so she asked if we wanted to take him for now. He already knows Brandon and he already knows Liv. He seems like a good kid and he just wants someone to love him. We can give him that."
"Plus a lot more because of your family."
"Exactly. Diana said the Callaghans had just been approved to adopt him but she doesn't know what that would mean for us. He just needs to adjust to bein' in a new place."
"Brandon seemed to adjust to you pretty quickly and Rachel adjusted quickly to us too. They already know this kid has no one else."
Ed and Hank talked for a while and then the kids got up from their naps. Ed left to go get Brandon. When he arrived, Diana and Olivia were just arriving as well. They were met by Ms. Jackson, who had already spoken to the Principal.
"Thank you for agreeing to do this."
"No problem. If the Callaghans had just been approved for adoption, what does that mean for us?"
"We will see how things are going after 3 months. He does have history with both Brandon and Lieutenant Voight, so that should help him adjust."
"He accidentally knocked into Brandon and Brandon has a broken wrist but he apologized and was tellin' me that he just wants someone to love him. He seems like a good kid and it seems like he's been through a lot."
"I asked Olivia this but she said you would probably know better than she would. His parents gave up all their rights to him, right?"
"They were too young to raise a child and their parents were not going to help out. They left him at the hospital and never came back for him. We had hoped someone would have wanted him but it didn't work out that way. The Callaghans had seemed to be the best fit for him. He's not a bad kid but he's just been through a lot especially in the foster home he was in prior to the Callaghans."
"He told me that if it hadn't been for Brandon and Olivia, he'd probably be dead right now."
"He probably would have. Being closer to Brandon was the main reason I inquired as to whether the two of you would take him or not."
The kids started coming out of the building and Brandon saw them right away. Michael was with him. They both came over to them. By now Patty had arrived to get Amy, so Ed and Diana were filling her in on everything.
"Hi Mommy. Hi Daddy. Hi Auntie Liv."
"Hey, kiddo. How was your day?"
"Good. Why is Ms. Jackson here?"
"She's here to talk to Michael."
"Michael, I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. Mr. and Mrs. Callaghan were killed in a car accident this morning."
Michael stood there with a blank look on his face as he tried to comprehend what she had just told him. Olivia knew he was about to break down, so she opened her arms and let him run to her as he sobbed.
"Will I ever be able to be happy?"
Brandon was sad for his friend and wanted Ed to pick him up. He and Diana both rubbed his back.
"The Tuckers have agreed to let you come live with them, so you will be with Brandon."
"But for how long?"
"We're in this, kiddo."
"Wait, Mikey is gonna be my brother again?"
"Yep."
"Woo hoo!"
"Michael, this is my sister Patty and her granddaughter Amy. Patty, this is Michael."
"Hey, Michael. It's nice to meet you."
"You too. I already know Amy."
"Yep, he does."
"What about Lily? The Callaghans adopted her for me."
"Who's Lily?"
"Our dog."
"What kind of dog is she?"
"She's a dalmatian."
"That's the same type of dog as our Lola."
Michael told them when and where they got her.
"I wonder if they're sisters because we got Lola from the same shelter and she's the same age."
"Can I keep her?"
"Sure, you can."
"Erin said she would get Kara for you."
"Ok, good."
"I need to get back to the Pub. I'm sure we'll talk later."
"Ok. We'll be at Hank and Olivia's for dinner."
"I'll let Erin know. It was nice to meet you."
"You too."
"Welcome to the family, Mike."
"Thanks."
Patty and Amy left to head back to the Pub and then Olivia headed home, while everyone else went to the Callaghans to get Michael's things and Lily. Once they had everything, they went home and got him settled before they went over to Hank and Olivia's with the boys and Lily. They got there at the same time Erin and the kids got there. Kara got our of Erin's SUV.
"This must be Michael."
"Yep. Mike, this is my youngest sister Erin, my nephew Connor, my niece Kelly and our daughter Kara. This is Lily."
"Wow! She looks just like Lola."
"Yeah, she does."
"How many sisters do you have?"
"I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers. I'm the oldest and Patty, the one you met earlier, is the next oldest. Erin is the baby. I have a big family, so hopefully that's ok."
"That's ok. I've never had that. The Callaghans didn't have much family. Diana, do you have a big family?"
"Not really. I have a sister, a brother-in-law and nieces and nephews. This is my sister's house."
"Oh."
"We're going to head back to the Pub."
"Ok. Later."
Erin, Kelly and Connor left and then they all went to the door. They rang the doorbell and then Olivia answered it.
"Olivia! You live here?"
"Yep."
"Wait, you and Diana are sisters?"
"We are."
"That is so cool."
"Come on in, everyone."
Michael hugged Olivia. Everyone came in and then Lola, Misty and Stormy ran to the door. Lola ran to Lily and started sniffing her and Lily did the same. Then they both started chasing each other. Misty and Stormy joined in on the fun.
"HONEY."
"YEAH."
"CAN YOU OPEN THE BACKDOOR AND LET THE 4 DOGS RUN AROUND THE BACKYARD?"
"OK."
Hank opened the backdoor and let the dogs out. He then came out of the kitchen, so then Olivia introduced him to Michael and then she took him to meet Noah, Rachel and Camille. Olivia put Camille in the high chair, while the other kids played and Kara found somewhere to do her homework. Hank finished fixing dinner and then they all sat down to eat. After dinner, they had dessert and then Ed and Diana took their group home. Olivia gave the kids a bath and got them ready for bed, while Hank cleaned up the kitchen. By the time everyone was clean and ready for bed, Erin and Jay video chatted and gave them an update on Will and Natalie. After they talked to Erin and Jay, they put the kids to bed and went to get ready for bed themselves. They got into bed and then they made love before they fell asleep in each other's arms.
Ed and Diana had gotten the boys in bed and put Michael in the other bunk in Brandon's room. Both dogs were sleeping next to the bed on the floor. Kara was already in bed but reading.
"Are you ok with havin' Mike here?"
"Yeah. Why wouldn't I be ok? I love being a big sister."
"I am so proud of you."
"Me too, kiddo."
They both kissed Kara goodnight and then they went into their bedroom to get ready for bed.
"Are you going to go shopping tomorrow to get furniture?"
"Probably. I'll probably get the same bedroom set we bought Brandon."
"That's a good idea."
Ed and Diana kissed and then turned the light off. Then they both fell asleep in each other's arms.
