Chapter 18: Unraveling
Jade, still adjusting to the new dynamic of Tori living with her, found herself navigating unexpected challenges. The paparazzi's relentless pursuit intensified after news broke about Tori's illness. As Jade left work one evening, she was greeted by a swarm of flashing cameras and probing questions.
"Jade, over here! How's Tori doing? Can you give us an update?" a reporter called out.
Jade shielded her eyes from the camera flashes, maintaining a stoic expression. "Tori is recovering, and we appreciate the concern. We're focusing on her well-being right now."
The barrage continued as she made her way to her car. Sinjin, ever the loyal friend, stood by her side. "They won't let up, will they?" he remarked.
Jade sighed, frustration evident in her voice. "No, they won't. It's a circus. I just want Tori to get better without all this chaos."
In the midst of the media storm, Jade's inbox filled with interview requests. Despite the intrusion, she recognized an opportunity to turn the narrative in a different direction. "Maybe I can use this to our advantage," she mused aloud.
Sinjin looked at her quizzically. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, interviews pay. And right now, I could use some extra income," Jade explained. "Tori can't work for a while, and my savings won't last forever."
Sinjin nodded in understanding. "You're right. This could be a way to manage the finances while Tori gets back on her feet."
Jade agreed to a few select interviews, strategically choosing platforms that respected their privacy and focused on Tori's recovery rather than sensationalizing their relationship. The interviews, while challenging, provided a financial cushion, alleviating some of Jade's worries about covering their expenses.
As they navigated the challenges together, Jade and Tori leaned on each other for support, finding strength in their connection amidst the chaos of media scrutiny.
Jade, always protective of Tori's well-being, couldn't shake the discomfort that lingered when considering financial support from her roommates. Even though Tori didn't seem to mind, Jade felt a responsibility not to take advantage of the situation. Tori needed time to heal, both physically and emotionally, and the idea of her worrying about creating content for her online presence felt premature.
Meanwhile, Jade found herself facing a new proposition – a tell-all book about her life. The inquiry piqued her interest, but as she delved deeper, she discovered the focus was on Ben and the accusations against him. The potential advance for the book was substantial, but it came with stipulations and nondisclosure agreements (NDAs). However, Ben had already violated the terms that would have made those NDAs enforceable.
Jade pondered the ethical implications of exposing Ben's actions, knowing that it could have far-reaching consequences. She considered the potential impact on Tori, who was still on the path to recovery. The decision weighed heavily on her, as she grappled with the idea of bringing Ben's misconduct to light while also safeguarding Tori's healing process.
In the midst of these dilemmas, Jade sought guidance from those she trusted. Sinjin, perceptive as ever, shared his perspective. "This could be an opportunity to shed light on the truth and hold Ben accountable. But you need to consider the consequences, especially for Tori."
Jade nodded, acknowledging the delicate balance she needed to strike. The offer on the table was significant, and the potential impact on her financial situation was undeniable. Still, Jade remained torn, torn between financial opportunities, her commitment to Tori, and the responsibility to address the wrongs of the past.
As she navigated this intricate web of decisions, Jade couldn't shake the feeling that her choices had far-reaching implications, and the path forward was anything but clear.
As Tori nestled next to Jade in her bed, the weight of their recent challenges hung in the air. Jade sat up, her knees drawn close to her chin, contemplating the offer for the tell-all book. Tori, sensing Jade's internal struggle, spoke up, her voice soft and comforting.
"I think you should do it," Tori said, her words carrying a mixture of understanding and support. Jade sighed, acknowledging the reality of the situation. The looming threat of a SAG-AFTRA strike and the recent WGA strike had cast a shadow over the entertainment industry. Jade couldn't escape the practicality of Tori's perspective.
"Britney Spears is doing one, and with the potential strike, it looks like work might be on hold for a while," Tori added, her eyes reflecting concern for Jade's well-being.
Jade nodded, realizing the inevitability of confronting the offer. "You're right. I'll talk to them tomorrow." The gravity of the decision weighed on her, and Jade couldn't help but feel the impact it might have on her life and Tori's.
Expressing her gratitude, Tori admitted, "Thank you for being here for me, Jade. I wish I knew that getting the girl of my dreams was going to kill me."
Jade frowned, sensing the gravity of Tori's struggles. "Did that start all of it?" she asked, concerned for Tori's well-being.
Tori shook her head, explaining, "I was hypomanic already. It just made me extra happy."
Jade sighed in understanding, realizing the complexity of the situation. "So glad you're back," she said sincerely, her concern for Tori evident.
Tori, however, couldn't shake her own insecurities. "I was hypomanic when you met me," she confessed. "What if you don't like me anymore? What if my fans think I'm boring?"
Jade reassured her, "Then you get new fans. You can't be on all the time."
Curiosity lingered as Tori turned the tables, asking about Jade. "What about you?" she questioned. "What are we? Are we for real now?"
Caught off guard, Jade hesitated, uncertain how to respond. Tori, sensing the uncertainty, moved to stand, but Jade stopped her, pulling her close. Their lips met in a long, slow kiss, and as they separated, Tori sought clarity. "What's that mean?" she asked softly.
Jade, honest and vulnerable, revealed her feelings. "I wanna try for real. But Tori, I'm a mess."
Tori, true to herself, responded with a touch of humor, "Hello, this is me you're talking to." Jade couldn't help but laugh, realizing the unique connection they shared.
"We're quite a pair," Jade admitted, acknowledging the complexities of their journey.
"Oh yeah…" Tori said leaning back in the bed. Jade leaned to her side and looked down at her. Their eyes locked and held each other's gaze for what seemed like hours but were just minutes. Then Jade lowered her lips to Tori and they made love to each other for the second time.
Tori pulled Jade close, their bodies entwined. She felt her heart race as their lips met. She felt a spark of electricity between them, their tongues dancing around each other in a passionate embrace.
Tori ran her hands down Jade's body, exploring all the curves and angles. She moved her hands lower, feeling the heat radiating from between Jade's legs. She felt Jade moan softly as she touched her intimately.
Jade returned the favor, exploring Tori's body with her hands and tongue. She kissed her way down Tori's neck and chest, teasing her nipples with gentle bites. Tori gasped as each touch sent shivers down her spine.
The two women moved in unison, their hips grinding against each other, sending waves of pleasure through their bodies. Tori felt like she was being transported to another world as they moved together, their bodies becoming one as their pleasure intensified.
The intensity of their lovemaking grew until they both reached their climax, screaming out in pleasure as they reached the peak.
Afterwards, the two women lay in each other's arms, content and exhausted. Tori felt a deep sense of peace and love, and knew that there was no other place she would rather be. She kissed Jade's forehead, and the two of them fell asleep in each other's arms.
Jade scrutinized the publishing contract before her, contemplating the implications of a 50k advance. It wasn't a cure-all for her financial concerns, but it provided a buffer for the immediate future. Just as she prepared to put pen to paper, news of the SAG-AFTRA strike reverberated through the industry. A deep sigh escaped her, realizing the challenges ahead.
With a sense of resolve, Jade decided to join the picket line. The collective energy of fellow actors standing up for their rights resonated with her. As she walked alongside her peers, placard in hand, Jade began to ponder the overarching theme of her memoir. The strike became a backdrop to her introspection, a canvas upon which she would paint the story of her journey in the tumultuous world of showbiz.
The rhythmic chanting of slogans, the camaraderie among the striking actors, and the shared determination fueled Jade's contemplation. She envisioned a narrative that went beyond the glitz and glamour, delving into the struggles, triumphs, and the unvarnished truth of her experiences. The picket line became a space not just for collective bargaining but also for personal reflection.
As she marched with conviction, Jade understood that her memoir would be a testament to resilience, a candid exploration of the industry's challenges, and a celebration of the authenticity she sought in a world often defined by illusions. The strike, though a hindrance to immediate work, presented an opportunity for Jade to shape her narrative and contribute her voice to a broader conversation about the realities of being an artist.
In the midst of the picket line, Jade found inspiration. The pen in her hand, now poised to sign the contract, became a symbol of her commitment to authenticity and the unwavering determination to tell her story, unfiltered and unapologetic.
As Jade walked the picket line, she found herself in the company of familiar faces—Elodie, Beck, and Andre, her fellow costars. The camaraderie among them was palpable as they chatted, exchanged stories, and shared their commitment to the cause. Social media became a powerful tool for them to amplify their message and counter misconceptions about actors' financial situations.
Together, they fielded questions from the public, addressing the misconception that all actors are excessively wealthy. The notion that actors, especially those with a degree of fame, should not demand fair compensation during a strike was a common misunderstanding.
"If you are a fan of mine, you know I have no money," Jade asserted with a wry smile. "Most of us don't even make a livable wage and have to take on jobs as waiters or Uber drivers. The big names you see out here are standing up for those of us who have to work regular jobs to make ends meet."
"But you're a big name," someone insisted.
"And yet... I'm broke as a joke," Jade quipped. "We all deserve a livable wage. It's not just about the big names; it's about ensuring that every actor, regardless of their level of fame, can make a decent living doing what they love."
Their united front at the picket line served not only as a demonstration for fair compensation but also as a platform to educate the public on the economic challenges faced by actors across the spectrum.
