Chapter 19: Back to work

As Tori adjusted to her new medication and felt the stabilizing effects on her mood, she couldn't help but notice the changes it brought to her libido. The once vibrant and passionate aspect of her personality seemed to have taken a back seat. Although she was grateful for the newfound stability, she couldn't shake the guilt she felt for Jade, who had patiently waited through years of celibacy.

Meanwhile, Jade appeared preoccupied with her own endeavors. The impending strike by SAG-AFTRA and the challenges of navigating the picket line took up a considerable portion of her attention. She threw herself into supporting her fellow actors, advocating for fair compensation, and participating in discussions about the industry's need for change.

Tori observed Jade's dedication to the cause and couldn't help but admire her commitment. Despite the intimacy challenges, Jade seemed to understand Tori's changing chemistry and chose to concentrate on the broader issues at hand—namely, the writers' and actors' strike. Jade attended meetings, engaged in discussions, and used her platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those in the entertainment industry.

Tori, feeling a bit nervous about the situation, decided to be supportive in her own way. She offered encouragement to Jade, attended some picket line events with her, and became an avid supporter of the movement. In the midst of their own personal adjustments, Jade and Tori found a way to support each other through the highs and lows of their respective journeys. The dynamics of their relationship continued to evolve, shaped by the changing tides of their individual lives and the larger currents of the entertainment industry.

Tori sat in her room, reflecting on the past and the relationships that had shaped her. The memories of her last depressive episode with her previous girlfriend resurfaced, and she couldn't help but draw parallels to the present situation with Jade. She remembered the time when the darkness within her had overshadowed the joy she once brought to her friendships.

In particular, Tori thought about her friend Cat, who had always been a source of positivity and support. However, during her depressive episode, Tori unintentionally pushed Cat away, isolating herself from those who cared about her. It was a period of deep pain and loneliness, and in the aftermath, she learned that Cat had found solace and companionship with someone else—Sam.

Feeling a wave of remorse, Tori decided to reach out to Cat and offer an apology for her past behavior. She understood the importance of reconnecting with those who had once been close to her but had been inadvertently sidelined during her struggles.

Taking a deep breath, Tori dialed Cat's number. The phone rang a few times before Cat's cheerful voice answered.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Cat, it's Tori," she said, her voice carrying a mix of hesitation and sincerity.

"Tori! Oh my gosh, it's been forever! How have you been?" Cat's enthusiasm was evident even through the phone.

Tori sighed, "Yeah, it has been a while, and I'm sorry for that. I wanted to talk to you about something, and I hope you can forgive me."

"Forgive you? Of course! What's going on?"

Tori began to share her struggles with mental health, the ups and downs, and the impact it had on her relationships. She spoke about the past, acknowledging her own shortcomings during a difficult time and expressing genuine regret for how she had treated Cat.

Cat listened attentively, her understanding and compassion evident in her responses. "Tori, I had no idea you were going through all of that. I missed you, but I understand now. Mental health is important, and I'm glad you're taking steps to prioritize it."

As the conversation unfolded, Tori and Cat reconnected on a deeper level. Cat reassured Tori that she held no resentment and was always there to support her. The call ended with a promise to catch up in person soon, and Tori felt a sense of relief and gratitude for having such an understanding friend in her life again.

Sinjin settled on the couch, eagerly awaiting the start of their favorite show, "Genius High." Tori joined him, sinking into the cushions as the opening credits began to roll.

As they watched the fictional drama unfold on the screen, Sinjin turned to Tori and initiated a conversation about her recent experiences. "You've been on those meds for a while now, huh?" he asked.

Tori nodded, "Yeah, they seem to be working. I feel more stable, less erratic."

Sinjin nodded in understanding, "That's good, Tori. Stability is important, but it's also about finding the right balance. If you feel like something's off, maybe it's worth talking to your doctor about adjusting the dosage or trying something else."

Tori considered his words, appreciating his concern. "I just worry, you know? I don't want Jade to get tired of me if I'm not bringing the same energy to the relationship."

Sinjin leaned back, studying Tori thoughtfully. "Jade's not looking for crazy, Tori. She's in love with you because of who you are. I can see it in the way she looks at you."

Tori raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "How do you know?"

Sinjin grinned, "Well, let me put it this way. How many people has Jade allowed into her house? Like, actual guests. Not many, right?"

Tori thought for a moment, recalling the limited number of people she'd seen around Jade's place. "Yeah, you're right. I think I'm the only one."

"Exactly," Sinjin continued. "Jade doesn't let just anyone in. But you? You've got a special place in her world. Trust me, she's not getting tired of you anytime soon."

Tori smiled, comforted by Sinjin's insights. It was a reminder that her worth in the relationship went beyond any perceived need for chaos. As they returned their attention to the TV, Tori couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of gratitude for the people who cared about her, especially those who saw the depth of her connection with Jade.

Jade swung the door open, her arms laden with different screenplays and a spark of excitement in her eyes. The familiar theme music of "Genius High" played in the background as she entered, finding Tori and Sinjin engrossed in the on-screen antics of Emma.

"Hey, guys! You won't believe what just happened," Jade exclaimed, a grin stretching across her face.

Tori looked at her curiously, "What's up?"

Jade set the screenplays on the coffee table and took a seat next to them. "So, I got an offer to be a teacher on 'Abbot Elementary.' They want me to join the cast, and I said yes!"

Tori's eyes widened, "No way! That's amazing, Jade!"

Sinjin joined in, "Congrats! 'Abbot Elementary' is a hilarious show. You're gonna be fantastic!"

Jade nodded, her excitement infectious, "I know, right? I'll get to be mostly myself, and it's a cool opportunity. Plus, I'll be one of the few cool white people at a predominantly black school, aside from Ms. Cimenti, of course."

Tori clapped her hands, "I'm so proud of you, Jade. This is huge!"

They shared a celebratory moment, basking in the positive turn of events. The room echoed with laughter and joy as they envisioned the opportunities ahead. As the strike lingered in the background, Jade's new venture served as a beacon of hope and anticipation for the future.

Jade wrapped her arm around Tori, and the Latina leaned closer to Jade. "I think I'm ready to post again. Will you post with me?"

Jade looked at her and kissed her forehead. "I'm here for you babe," she whispered. Tori nodded and cuddled into jade as they finished watching the episode.

In the cozy corner of Jade's bedroom, bathed in the soft glow of warm lights, Tori and Jade set up for Tori's anticipated return to the world of online content creation. Jade carefully adjusted the camera angle, ensuring it captured only the intended view and safeguarded their personal space.

As they settled into the makeshift recording space, Tori took a deep breath. Jade wrapped her arm around Tori, providing a comforting and supportive presence. Tori looked into the lens, her eyes conveying a mixture of vulnerability and determination.

"Hey, everyone. It's Tori," she began, her voice steady yet revealing the echoes of recent struggles. "I know it's been a while since I've been on here. I had to take some time for myself. Life threw some unexpected challenges my way, and I needed to focus on healing."

Jade listened attentively, her fingers expertly moving across her makeup palette as she prepared for the story time ahead. Tori continued, sharing the raw and unfiltered details of her recent breakdown, the emotional journey that had brought her to this moment.

"I hit a low point, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. But I'm here now, thanks to the incredible support of those around me, especially Jade," Tori said, casting a grateful glance at her girlfriend.

Jade leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to Tori's forehead. "You're doing great, babe," she whispered.

With each word, Tori's confidence grew. She spoke of the challenges and triumphs, painting a vivid picture of her journey back to stability. Jade worked on Tori's makeup, the rhythmic motions of the brushes and the quiet ambiance of the room creating a serene backdrop for Tori's story.

As they neared the end of the recording, Tori shared her gratitude for her followers and the strength she found in their support. Jade captured the essence of the moment with a final touch to Tori's makeup, the finishing strokes reflecting the resilience and newfound hope in Tori's eyes.

"Thank you all for being patient and understanding. I'm ready to share more with you, to be part of this community again," Tori concluded, a genuine smile lighting up her face.

The camera clicked off, marking the end of Tori's story time. Jade hugged Tori tightly, proud of her courage and honesty. Together, they faced the challenges of the public eye, united in their journey of love, growth, and unwavering support.
