Tris' POV

Tobias and I were walking, hand in hand, to Yellow House. He said I still had to take the test I missed the night Marcus attacked me. He seemed distracted tonight, but I didn't want to push him. I know we're both attracted and drawn to each other, but with two years apart, and only a handful of "moments" when we were in Abnegation, we still have a lot to learn. I've found that I've enjoyed learning how to read his moods. Tonight, he seems pensive. I'm sure his job as a leader can feel heavy at times. I decided to see if I could get him to open up to me.

"Penny for your thoughts?" I asked with a grin.

He looked down at me. I could tell he was trying to figure out what he could tell me. Finally, after releasing a deep breath, he said, "There are some things going on, and I will tell you about them, but you need to get through initiation first."

I stopped and looked up at him sternly, and asked, "And what happens if these things happen before I'm done with initiation? Will I be unprepared?"

He frowned and said, "I guess that's food for thought. Tonight, let's just focus on you."

I nodded and we continued walking in an uncomfortable silence. Finally, we reached Yellow House, and I headed for the back porch, to turn on the generator. I switched it on and unlocked the back door. I decided not to turn on any other lights and led him to the basement. There was a large storage room with no windows, but we'd put bean bags there so we could have "secret meetings". Somehow, tonight just felt like a "secret meeting" kind of night, and I didn't want anyone to see the lights on in the house.

After I turned on the light in the storage room, Tobias looked around, then nodded at me. I think he understood my intentions. After pushing two bean bags together, he pulled a third over and sat down. He motioned for me to take the two he'd placed together.

"It's best if you lie down for this." he explained.

After I lay down, he started attaching wires to me that were connected to his laptop. He then pulled a vial from his bag and told me to drink it.

I asked, "What will it do?"

He snickered, "Just drink it, Tris."

I mock glared at him and drank the entirety of the vial. Seconds later, I was in the lunchroom at school. I could tell it wasn't real and assumed it was the contents of the vial that were causing this illusion or dream or whatever. This wasn't what I was expecting when he told me I had to take a test.

When I came out of the dream state, I gasped. Tobias was looking at me with a shocked expression. He helped me sit up and just stared at me for a few moments. I decided I needed to prompt him to speak.

"What the hell was that?!" I asked, annoyed.

He shook his head and answered, "That, was the Aptitude Test. Max wanted you tested to see if his suspicions were right, to protect you."

"Protect me?" I asked.

"Yes, you are divergent. You have aptitude for three factions, Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. I've never heard of someone testing for three factions. Most divergents only test for two. It's very dangerous to be divergent. Erudite, specifically Jeanine, want all the divergents experimented on and killed."

I stared at him in shock. I'm divergent? I'm in danger? Jeanine wants me killed? What am I supposed to do?

Tobias moved next to me on the other bean bag and wrapped his arm around me, "Hey, it's going to be alright. I'll always keep you safe."

"So other than having aptitude for three factions, what does being divergent mean?" I questioned.

"It means you're aware during simulations. Were you aware during the Aptitude simulation?" he asked, his concern evident on his face.

"Yes. I knew I was seeing it all because of the vial you gave me." I answered.

He looked a little guilty, then said, I'm afraid you now have to drink another vial and go through the test all over again."

This time I glared at him for real, "What?! No! That was awful!"

He sighed, "Tris. You must learn how to get through it without showing your divergence. Jeanine already suspects you and will be watching your test results very closely. She's the one who added the stipulation that you still had to be tested. "

I growled and answered, "Fine."

He explained to me that in order to receive a Dauntless result, I had to choose the knife and kill the dog. It took me three attempts, but I was finally able to kill the dog. Still, he made me go through it two more times to make sure I would respond correctly. He reiterated how important it was for me to kill that damn dog every time. By the end I was not in a good mood. When he finally said we could stop, he disconnected the wires, and we sat together on the bean bags in silence.

"Want to do something fun?" he asked nervously. He thinks I'm mad at him.

I grinned, "Yes! What did you have in mind?"

He smirked and said, "I think you have more experience with fun than I do. Do you have any ideas?"

I smiled so wide, it's a wonder my face didn't crack, "Yes! Yes! Yes! Let's go jump in the net!"

His eyes got so wide I thought they'd pop right out of his head. He looked horrified. was big bad Four afraid of heights?

He stuttered, "I think you and I have very different ideas about what constitutes as 'fun'."

I laughed, "Come one! It's exhilarating! As soon as I landed, I wanted to go again! We can make out in the net afterwards." I said the last part with a flirtatious grin and waggled my eyebrows at him.

He gave me a small, shy smile and said, "I guess I can endure that awful jump if the end result is kissing you."

Laughing, I kissed him, but didn't deepen it. I jumped up and "pulled" him from his bean bag, then said, "Come on, we can jump together. I'll hold your hand."

He grinned and pushed me against the wall. He kissed me slowly, gently, but with passion, and I think, desire? I'm not quite sure what that feels like, but I think that's what he's showing me. I felt all tingly inside and my abdominal muscles clenched. When the kiss was over, we were both panting. I grabbed his hand and led him out. In order to reach the roof, we would have to walk aways to catch the train. We ran towards the nearest area where we could jump on the train when it passed, laughing and holding hands.

It was my first day going back at school, as a Dauntless, and I found myself at the breakfast table with my forehead resting, groaning because I was stupid and let Uriah convince me to try an alcoholic drink the night before. Apparently, I'm what he called "lightweight". Someone sat on my left side.

"Please, stop making the world move and just let me die." I groaned.

The intruder put their hand on my back and asked, "Are you okay? What happened?"

Tobias. Somehow, I knew he wasn't going to be pleased when he found out I was hungover. More people joined the table, including the loudest person of all.

"My dear, sweet, cousin, can't hold her liquor! She's hungover!" squealed Uriah.

I could almost feel the Four glare.

"What?! You gave her alcohol?! None of you are supposed to be drinking. You're all underage!" Four said in his most dangerous, deep, but quiet, voice.

I moaned, "Could you all just please stop talking. You're making me sick, and I still have to jump on a train in twenty minutes."

Marlene was on my right, and she put her arm around me, then she handed me two pills and a glass of orange juice. "Take these, you'll feel better, and grab a water bottle before we leave. Hydration will help too." she said sweetly.

By the time we needed to leave, I was feeling better. I grabbed a bottle of water, and we all headed to the train.

I wasn't sure what to expect at school, but it certainly wasn't this. I knew Peter, and his followers, would be on my case. Fortunately, now that I'm with all the Dauntless-born, I can respond to him the way I've always dreamed. When I was Abnegation, I had to be careful what I said or did. The two separate times I broke his nose, were both off school property. The idiot didn't know when to stop. I would have no problem taking him down. What I didn't expect was for my teachers to treat me differently. Except for my gym teacher, they were all Erudite and were not very nice to me. I think I preferred it when I was Abnegation and they just treated me with indifference.

The worst class was Geography with Miss Lee. She was teaching about imports and exports. This really wasn't relevant to our lives today, but when the country was whole, before the war, I guess things like this mattered. I wasn't even sure why she was teaching us this. At least, I wasn't until she really got into her subject. I was sitting in a group with Lynn and Brax. We were the only Dauntless in the room. We weren't paying attention until she mentioned my name. We looked up at the board and she'd put my name on the board and Peter's.

"Okay class, to illustrate the importance of importing and exporting only wanted goods, we're going to be importing dolls. The first dolls will be Beatrice dolls. The second dolls will be Peter dolls." she simpered.

She had our attention now, especially since she deliberately used my Abnegation name, even though I'd corrected her during roll call.

She continued, "Now the Peter dolls are in high demand. Everybody wants a Peter doll."

Lynn scoffed, "Yeah right."

Brax and I both snickered.

Then Miss Lee went on about the Beatrice dolls, "The Beatrice dolls, however, nobody wanted. They were a complete waste of materials, money, space, and time."

Peter and his minions and most of the Erudite in the room were openly laughing.

I spoke up, "I think you have that backwards, dumbass, the Peter dolls would be absolutely worthless. Who wants a doll with a nose that just keeps getting broken?"

Miss Lee looked at me in shock, realizing it was her I'd called a dumbass. Peter, on the other hand, jumped up and marched over to me. I stood my ground and readied myself for defense. Unfortunately, his friends Drew and Molly joined him. Lynn and Brax stood by my side. It became a brawl... in the classroom... It ended with Peter, Molly, and Drew, in a pile on the floor, and Miss Lee and the rest of the class huddled on the other side of the room. Lynn, Brax, and I were all sent to the principal's office.

As we sat waiting for the principal, two of our Dauntless leaders walked in the door. Max, my uncle and Brax' dad, and Tobias. Crap! Forget about the principal, we were in big trouble!

Max glared down at us and asked, "Why am I here?"

We explained what happened, but it was to no avail. Max was mostly upset that he had to come talk to the principal. We waited for him and Tobias to come out. Finally, they came out, Max ignored us and walked right out of the building. Four, because he was indeed Four, in this moment, ordered us all up and marched us behind Uncle Max, to the train tracks. We got there right when the train was coming, and we all jumped on.

"Your punishment, for starting a brawl in the middle of class, is that you have to clean the entire cafeteria by yourselves, for the remainder of the week." Four grumbled at us.

He then continued, "Beatrice. Your extra punishment for calling your teacher a dumbass is that you have to first, apologize to her, and second, you have to spend the entire day tomorrow helping her in her classes. You can't lose your temper while you're with her. Is that clear?"

He was glaring at me, and I just wanted to scream. This wasn't fair after what she did. She was deliberately trying to hurt me and I'm sure she'll continue tomorrow, and I just have to suck it up?! Hmph! Well, he's not the only one who can glare. I gave him the meanest glare I could muster. Jumped off the train and stomped off to Uncle Max' apartment. I went to my room, slammed the door, and didn't come out until the next day.
