Chapter 1 – Baby Talk

"Oh, but I can't take Clint on the plane."

"Oh, Libby, Clint will be fine. You will be fine. Air travel is the safest form of transportation."

"Oh, but what if he cries during the movie, and they ask me to step outside?"

Mona falls over on the couch, not sure how to take this woman and her senselessness. Angela butts in.

"Uh, don't you know anybody here that could help take care of him?"

"Oh, I… I have no other family other than…Norman."

Libby begins to cry at the mention of Norman's name.

"Well, I know somebody who's great with children. Somebody who's experienced, responsible and mature."

All three ladies look over at Tony who is holding Clint and making baby eyes and baby noises at him. He doesn't realize he's being watched.

As Tony is laughing at Clint's happy face, he turns around with a big grin on his face and notices all three ladies watching him.

"What's everybody looking at?"

Tony starts babbling at baby Clint as the three ladies continue to watch and laugh at him.

Mona and Libby make it to Los Angeles and talk to Norman, who informs Libby he wants to stay in Los Angeles. She agrees and Mona and her head back to Fairfield to pick up Clint.

Tony is in the kitchen with baby Clint, feeding him and trying to get him to say "Tony".

"Okay, ready, here we are. All right now, wait, wait… Toe-knee. There you go."

Tony feeds baby Clint his baby food.

"You get this now, listen now, listen again, listen again. This is your toe and this is your knee, it makes Toe-knee."

He feeds him another spoonful of baby food.

"You get that… All right, let's try it one more time. Toe-knee. Tony. Come on, come on, say it, come on, anybody can say it!"

At that moment, Angela arrives home from work and shuts the front door, heading into the kitchen.

"Tony!"

"See?"

Tony feeds baby Clint another mouthful of baby food.

Angela walks through the swinging door into the kitchen, pausing for a brief second or two for a glance at Tony holding baby Clint. Her breath catches in her throat as she takes in the sight of him feeding Clint, her heart swooning at Tony and how natural he looks with a baby.

Breaking her thoughts, she smiles at Tony and baby Clint.

"Hi, ya, baby."

Tony, trying to be funny, answers her back.

"Hi, yourself, cutie."

"I was talking to Clint. Can I feed him?"

"No, come on."

"No, please, please, really. Last time before Norman and Libby come and get him."

"All right, all right, all right. Little surfer boy is off to California, huh, kid. You know, he's gonna be a good surfer, you know. He's spent a lot of time in a wet suit."

Tony sits him down in his high chair as Angela grabs the bowl of baby food that Tony had been feeding him.

"Okay, here we go. Open your mouth, close your eyes, and you will get a big surprise!"

Clint happily accepts the spoonful of baby food from Angela, grinning from ear to ear. Angela smiles back at him.

"I can't believe this."

"What?"

"Babies going for that cutesy stuff. Let me show you how this is done. Let me just show you."

Tony, grabbing the bowl from Angela, gathers a spoonful of baby food and begins to imitate an airplane. He then proceeds to imitate a machine gun. He then imitates an airplane dive bombing.

"Loaded with delicious. Packed with flavor."

Tony guides the spoon of food into Clint's mouth, who happily accepts it.

"Action-adventure is in."

"Hey, did you hear that?"

"What?"

"The kid just said Tony."

"I don't think so."

Angela began to laugh.

"No, Angela, I'm serious. I think he's getting ready to say it again…"

At that moment, Tony and Angela lean down towards baby Clint, who begins to whine.

Glancing back up at each other, Tony laughs.

"Hey, it's a start."

Baby Clint begins to cry as Tony grabs a towel from the counter and wipes baby Clint's mouth.

"Tony, you know, you are wonderful. Look how you do everything for this baby. You know, you would make a wonderful mother."

"Angela, what about you? You dash in from the office, spend a minute with the kid, make a mess. You'd be a great father."

Angela, leaning down to look closer at baby Clint, speaks softly.

"I'm going to miss having a baby around…"

"Yeah, it's kind of fun having someone to do housework with."

Angela, hesitant, is silent for a moment. She gives Tony a look and he's silent too.

"Hey, Angela, you… you ever think about having another one?"

"A baby?... I'd love to, but how?"

Tony, narrowing his eyes, looks at Angela with slight confusion.

"I'll tell you later, not in front of the kid."

Angela gives Tony a smirk, trying to hold her laughter in.

Tony, laughing, silently lets his mind drift to thoughts of Angela being pregnant, how stunning she would look with that pregnancy "glow" … His mind then drifts to thoughts of Angela carrying their child…

"Tony?"

Angela's mention of his name breaks his thoughts and brings him back to the kitchen.

"Yeah?"

"Penny for your thoughts? You looked like you were miles away…"

"Oh, I was just, uh… thinking."

"Oh? About what?"

"Oh, you know… about…uh… about babies."

"Babies, huh?"

"Yeah, you know… How cute they are… how they smell…"

"Yeah… Tony, have you thought about having another baby?"

"Me?"

"Yeah."

"Uh, I mean… Yeah, I've… I've thought about it. With Sam getting older, you know… It'd be great to have a little boy… Someone to carry on the Micelli name…"

Tony grinned and looked back at Angela, who looked like she was just gazing at Tony with admiration and love.

Tony, curious of Angela's answer, decided to ask her another personal question about babies.

"Hey, Angela… If you had another baby, what would you want? A boy or a girl?"

Angela looked like she drifted off to dream land at Tony's question. It took her a moment to respond.

"I think, honestly, I'd love to have a little girl. You know, I had Jonathan before, and I've always wanted a little girl. Someone to dress up in cute dresses with bows, someone to take shopping, someone to teach about being a woman…"

"I think you'd make a terrific mother, Angela."

Angela's heart filled with love for Tony.

"Thank you, Tony. I know you'd make a wonderful father."

"Thanks."

Both stood in silence for a few moments, trying to collect their thoughts.

"Well, I guess I better get started on dinner."

"Oh, sure Tony. I need to catch up on some work in my study."

Angela began to walk out of the kitchen when Tony called her name.

"Yeah?"

"Uh, how about a movie tonight? Just me and you? Popcorn?"

Angela smiled and nodded yes.

"I'd like that, Tony."

"Good."
