Chapter 29: Showdown

The aftermath of the clash between Naruto and Bee left a thick cloud of dust hanging in the air. The ground trembled with residual power as the rest of Naruto's team squared off against Yugito. Despite their advantage in numbers, the tension was palpable; they were up against a jinchuriki, one of the strongest warriors in Kumo.

Yugito's eyes gleamed with excitement as she eyed her opponents. "So, Uzumaki left his little playmates to fend for themselves, eh?" she mocked.

Hinata, Shisui, and Sasuke stood firm, undeterred by her taunts. Sasuke's eyes narrowed, the Sharingan spinning as he readied himself. "We're not just Naruto's playmates," he shot back, his voice cold. "We're here to take you down."

Yugito chuckled, extending her claws. "Cute. But let's see if the three of you can back up your words."

The team took their positions, the air crackling with tension. Hinata nocked three arrows in her bow, eyes focused. Shisui and Sasuke, their swords gleaming under the dim light, prepared to engage.

With a blur of motion, Yugito was upon them, her claws slashing through the air. Hinata loosed four arrows, but Yugito dodged effortlessly, closing the distance in an instant. Hinata barely had time to draw another arrow before Yugito kicked the bow from her hands, sending it skittering across the ground.

Hinata switched to hand-to-hand combat, her movements fluid and precise. She struck at Yugito with a series of rapid blows, but the jinchuriki's speed and strength were overwhelming. Yugito parried Hinata's attacks easily, a grin on her face. "Is this all you've got?" she taunted, slashing at Hinata with her claws.

Shisui intervened, his sword clashing with Yugito's claws in a shower of sparks. "Hinata, fall back!" he ordered, pushing Yugito back with a powerful strike. Hinata nodded, retreating to regain her footing.

Sasuke seized the opportunity, rushing at Yugito with his sword. He swung with precision, but Yugito met his attack head-on, disarming him with a swift strike. She prepared to finish him, raising her hand to slash him but she suddenly felt Maatatabi's paw gently pat her on the head in their mind plane.

Wake up, you're in a genjutsu.

Breaking free thanks to her tailed beasts intervention, she found Sasuke behind her, his Chidori striking her with a powerful jolt, injuring her on the shoulder before she could fully evade.

Yugito staggered, but her healing factor kicked in, mending her wounds gradually. Her expression darkened as she focused on Hinata, who was now without her bow. Yugito lunged at her, but Shisui intercepted, his speed matching hers as he slashed with his sword. Sasuke joined in, landing a cut on her side.

Despite their combined efforts, Yugito fought back fiercely, blocking their attacks with her claws. Hinata, finding an opening, unleashed her Air Lion Palm, striking Yugito's tenketsu. The impact forced Yugito to crash into a wall, but she quickly recovered, evading Shisui's follow-up attack and retreating to a nearby rooftop.

"Shit, that bastard got me again," Yugito cursed as nursed her wounds, her confidence shaken but not broken.

"Now this takes me back," Sasuke mocked from below. The trio made their way onto the rooftop, carefully approaching Yugito as she slowly retreated until her back was up against a chimney.

"I didn't see myself chasing lost cats this late into my career," Sasuke continued to mock her as Hinata chuckled lightly.

Yugito's eyes blazed with determination as she accessed Matatabi's chakra, her body enveloped in a cloak of blue flames. "Don't get too cocky brat," she snarled, her speed and strength increasing to inhuman levels.

In a blur, Yugito knocked Sasuke off the roof. Hinata barely had time to react before she was sent flying, Yugito's kick sending her crashing to the ground. She could barely detect the jinchuriki as she streaked past her in mid air, leaping off the ground and meeting her again with a powerful kick before she even hit the ground. Yugito turned her attention to Sasuke, slashing at him with her claws, but Sasuke managed to evade, though she still left a deep gash along his side.

Shisui met Yugito's attack head-on, their speed nearly matched. He managed to block her claws with his sword and even landed a kick, sending her backwards. She landed on all fours, her hair wild with chakra. "You've got skill, Shisui, but you're out of your league," she taunted, evading his fire style slashes and rushing at him again.

Shisui dodged, successfully placing her under a Sharingan genjutsu, but Yugito broke free, leaping above him to wrap her legs around his neck and violently launch him into a wall. Pinning him down, as he struggled to get back on his feet, she prepared to deliver the final blow, but her expression changed, whispering Bee's name with worry. This gave Shisui the chance to break free, sending a fireball her way.

Yugito evaded, landing on a nearby wall, her eyes locked on Shisui. The Uchiha struggled to his feet, hand shaking as he grabbed his sword. Fear gripped him, but he steadied himself, ready to fight on. Suddenly, a loud crash interrupted them. Killer Bee had been thrown into a house nearby, the building collapsing around him.

Yugito's gaze shifted, concern etched on her face. Seizing the moment, Shisui flickered away to Sasuke's position. The battle wasn't over yet, but he was wise enough to know when to fall back.

The dust from the collapsed building settled as Killer Bee crashed to the ground. Yugito, sensing the danger, rushed to his side. The two jinchuriki stood ready, their eyes locked on Naruto. The air was thick with tension as the trio prepared for a fierce showdown.

"Yugito," Bee grunted, "We need to take this away from the village center, there are civilians sheltered there." Yugito responded with a nod, preparing for the ensuing battle.

Naruto clenched his fists, his eyes blazing with determination. "I'm not done Bee," he taunted, his voice echoing through the battlefield. "Let's settle this."

With a shared look, Bee and Yugito lunged at Naruto simultaneously. Bee's attacks were rhythmic and powerful, his fists and swords moving in perfect harmony. Yugito, her claws extended, attacked with speed and precision. Naruto, enhanced by his sage mode, moved with incredible agility, dodging and parrying their synchronized strikes.

Bee swung his sword, aiming for Naruto's midsection, but Naruto leapt back, narrowly avoiding the blade. He countered with a swift kick, but Bee blocked it with his forearm, grinning. "Nice one, but you'll need to try harder than that!"

Yugito seized the opportunity, launching a stream of blue flames towards Naruto. He flipped through the air, evading the scorching heat. As he landed, Yugito was already upon him, her claws slashing through the air. Naruto ducked, feeling the wind from her attack rush past him. He retaliated with a powerful punch, but Yugito twisted her body, evading the blow and countering with a kick that sent Naruto skidding back.

In the background, Shisui had recovered Sasuke and Hinata. Hinata was still unconscious, while Sasuke, though awake, was still wounded. Shisui's eyes followed the intense battle, his mind racing for a way to help. He reached for his radio, calling for backup and medical units. "Command, we need reinforcements and medics at our location. And Naruto, we're not looking good here so me and the others are withdrawing," he informed through his earpiece.

Naruto, dodging another attack from Bee, heard Shisui's message. "Got it," he responded, focusing on his opponents. He had to hold them off until his team was safe. Assisted by his sage mode, he evaded every attack, his movements a blur of speed and precision.

The fight dragged on, the battlefield echoing with the sound of clashing jutsus and the shouts of combat. Despite their relentless assault, Bee and Yugito couldn't land a decisive hit on Naruto. He lured Bee into attacking a clone, then launched a tailed beast bomb at him. Bee, realizing the bomb was heading towards the village's center, braced for impact. He began to transform into Gyūki, wrapping his tentacles around the bomb and absorbing the explosion's force. As the smoke cleared, Bee stood battered but still standing.

Before he could react, Naruto rushed at him, landing a powerful punch that sent Bee crashing into a building. Enraged, Yugito pushed herself harder, engaging Naruto with ferocious intensity. She attacked with a flurry of slashes and jutsus, but Naruto skillfully evaded each one. With a swift movement, he intercepted her with a strong blow and followed up with a rasengan, sending her crashing to the ground, the blue flames covering her body fizzling out.

Yugito, defeated, watched as Naruto stood over her. Realizing her fight was over, she acknowledged Naruto's strength. "You've come a long way, Naruto," she admitted, her voice filled with a mix of respect and frustration.

Naruto stood over her, his mind racing. She lay on the ground, bruised and battered, yet defiant. Blood trickled from a cut on her forehead, mixing with the dust and grime of the battlefield. He had the chance to end it, to finally put down one of his oldest adversaries, but he hesitated. He thought of Bee, once his close friend. He didn't really like Yugito, but she was important to Bee. Gritting his teeth, he felt anger and frustration. After almost a year of war, here she was, one of the most dangerous shinobi from Kumo, at his mercy. Yet he still couldn't bring himself to kill her.

You're embarrassing, Kurama's voice rang out in his mind. Are you going to stand there until her partner returns?

Clenching his teeth, Naruto scanned for Bee. His senses heightened by sage mode, he found his large chakra signature, and Yugito's own signature too. But then Naruto detected something unusual.

A faint, almost imperceptible chakra signature inside Yugito, distinct from her own. It was small, fragile, yet unmistakably there. His eyes widened as the realization dawned on him.

"You're..." Naruto's voice faltered, the weight of his discovery hitting him like a ton of bricks. "You're pregnant..."

Yugito's eyes widened in shock, her hand instinctively moving to her abdomen. The defiance in her gaze wavered, replaced by a flicker of vulnerability. "What did you just say?"

"How...how long have you been with child?" Naruto whispered, his anger washing away.

Naruto's mind raced, the determination that had fueled him moments ago melting away. He thought of Bee, of their shared history, their bond. He couldn't bring himself to kill her, not now, not knowing her condition. Lowering his hand, he took a step back, his resolve shaken.

"Retreat from the town," he said, his voice softer now, almost gentle. "You and Bee should leave, before my allies arrive."

Yugito stared at him, a mix of surprise and gratitude in her eyes. She struggled to sit up, leaning against the wall for support. "Why?" she asked, her voice strained.

Naruto met her gaze, his expression resolute. "Because this war has taken enough from all of us. And because... I can't be the one to take away another life, especially not like this."

He turned away, ready to leave her behind. As she hobbled away, he called back one last time, "Congratulations, Yugito."

He watched her look back at him, then continue towards Killer Bee's location. Naruto knew the battle was far from over, but for now, he had made a choice—to show mercy, to hold on to a sliver of humanity amidst the chaos of war.

Two weeks later

Naruto walked through the battered streets of the captured town, Shisui by his side. The once vibrant village now stood as a grim testament to the periodic shelling ordered by the Raikage. Buildings lay in ruins, their skeletal remains casting long shadows in the afternoon sun. The air was thick with the smell of smoke and dust, mingling with the scent of fear and resentment.

As they patrolled, Naruto couldn't help but notice the hardened expressions on the faces of the townspeople. Mothers held their children closer as he passed, their eyes filled with a mixture of defiance and terror. Children, who should have been playing in the streets, now ran into their homes at the sight of him. The weight of their hatred was palpable, and it pressed down on Naruto's heart like a leaden shroud.

"Why do they hate us so much?" Naruto muttered to Shisui, his voice barely above a whisper.

Shisui glanced at him, his eyes filled with understanding. "We took their home, Naruto. To them, we're invaders. And the constant shelling isn't helping."

Naruto nodded, his gaze fixed on the ground. He knew Shisui was right, but it didn't make it any easier to bear. He had always thought of himself as a protector, someone who would defend his land from external threats. But here, in this broken town, he felt like anything but.

His mind went back to his battle with Killer Bee. He had begun to see things from his own perspective; Bee and Yugito were now the ones fighting for their land, against him, the invader. It was a similar situation to when they last met, fighting over the port town of Fūka. Although he believed Konoha was in the right to invade the land of lightning, he wasn't sure the civilians they kept under strict surveillance cared enough about the details of the war's beginning.

They continued their patrol in silence, the memory of the previous night's shelling still fresh in their minds. The heaviest bombardment yet had left even more buildings reduced to rubble, adding to both the civilian and military casualties. The fear and resentment in the air were almost suffocating.

Naruto's thoughts turned to the recent execution of two civilians, ordered as a retaliation for the mysterious murder of a Konoha Chunin. It was a brutal reminder of the realities of war, and it had only served to deepen the divide between the occupiers and the occupied.

For Naruto, this was his first time being part of an occupation force, and it was a harsh lesson. The Hokage's orders to slow down and hold the line until they could gather enough resources for a larger push to capture Kumogakure itself was constantly on the back of his mind. The idea of pacifying a much larger city seemed almost impossible.

As they walked, Naruto finally broke the silence. "Shisui, do you think we're doing the right thing?"

Shisui paused, looking at Naruto with a mixture of concern and thoughtfulness. "It's not an easy question to answer, Naruto. We're following orders, trying to win the war. But the cost... it's hard to justify sometimes."

Naruto sighed, running a hand through his hair. "If we do capture Kumogakure, how are we supposed to keep it under control? How can we make these people accept us when they hate us so much?"

Shisui put a hand on Naruto's shoulder, his grip firm and reassuring. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Right now, our job is to secure this village and protect our comrades. We can't let the weight of the future crush us before we even get there."

That night, Naruto lay on his cot, staring up at the ceiling. His mind was a storm of conflicting thoughts. The faces of the townspeople haunted him, their fear and hatred a constant reminder of the cost of this war. He couldn't stop thinking about the future, about the possibility of patrolling occupied towns for years, decades, trying to subdue a people who would never truly accept them.

"Is this really what I want?" he whispered to himself. "To be a conqueror instead of a protector?"

Shisui's words echoed in his mind, offering some comfort but not enough to dispel his doubts entirely. Naruto knew he had to follow orders, to fight and win the war. But as he closed his eyes and drifted into an uneasy sleep, he couldn't shake the feeling that the future looked increasingly bleak.

The road ahead was uncertain, and the burden of his choices weighed heavily on his heart. For now, all he could do was take it one day at a time, hoping that somehow, some way, they would find a path to peace that didn't leave so much destruction in its wake.

Yugito sat on a wooden stool in a dimly lit tent at the rear of the frontline. The air was thick with the smell of dust and the sounds of metal, a constant reminder of the ongoing war. Across from her stood Samui, her expression as cold and unyielding as her name suggested. Reports had been coming in from Darui about Yugito's dropping performance levels. Apparently, her missions had been plagued by illness and unusual fatigue.

Samui's voice was stern and direct. "Yugito, we need to talk."

Yugito straightened, trying to mask her anxiety. "I know I've been underperforming, Samui. I'm sorry."

Samui's eyes narrowed. "Sorry won't cut it. The Raikage is already displeased with you and Bee's failure to defend Kaminosato. If you don't step up, he could punish you."

Yugito swallowed hard, her mind racing. "I understand. I'll do better. I promise."

Samui folded her arms, her gaze piercing. "This isn't just about you, Yugito. Morale in Kumo's military is dropping. The last thing we need is one of our most prominent shinobi underperforming."

Yugito clenched her fists in her lap, her nails digging into her palms. "I know, Samui. I'll push through it. It's just...I haven't exactly been in the right state of mind for sometime now."

Samui sighed, her expression softening slightly. "You can't afford to be mentally unwell Yugito, not especially now when we're under pressure." She leaned back on the desk and continued. "You're on thin ice, Yugito. If you continue with this poor streak into your next mission, the next time you get summoned it might be the Raikage himself you'll speak to."

Yugito's heart pounded in her chest. "I'll improve, Samui. I won't let you down."

Samui nodded, but her eyes remained doubtful. "I hope so. You're dismissed."

As Yugito rose and left the tent, her mind drifted back to her battle with Naruto. He was the one who had revealed to her that she was pregnant, and since that day her mind had been a whirlwind of emotions. Joy at the thought of having a child with someone she loved, and fear about the repercussions of her condition.

She had still withheld the news from Killer Bee, deciding to wait until they were deployed together so she could tell him in person. She could only imagine how the Raikage would react to one of his most important assets being incapacitated for several months due to her own actions. She remembered what happened to Han, and she shuddered in fear and worry.

In her tent, Yugito collapsed onto her cot, her hands instinctively going to her stomach. The weight of her secret was crushing, and she felt a deep pang of guilt for not telling Bee. She knew she had to, but the fear of what might happen next was paralyzing.

Meanwhile, outside, Samui watched Yugito leave, her expression firm and unyielding. She cared for her comrade, but the stakes were too high to allow personal feelings to cloud her judgment. She knew the Raikage wouldn't be as lenient if Yugito's performance didn't improve soon. The war was reaching a critical stage, and every shinobi needed to be at their best.

As the night deepened, Yugito lay awake, her mind a turbulent sea of thoughts and emotions. The sound of distant artillery echoed through the camp, a constant reminder of the relentless conflict. She knew she had to find a way to balance her duties and her new reality, but the path ahead seemed impossibly fraught with danger and uncertainty.

Minato stood on a hill overlooking the sprawling Konoha camp set up in the land of lightning. His gaze was stern, lost in the expanse of tents, soldiers, and the faint flicker of campfires below. His thoughts were heavy with the weight of leadership and the burden of the choices he had made. At his feet, Naruto sat on the ground, his head bowed and deep in thought, the war having etched a somber aura around him.

The silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken words. Finally, Minato broke the silence, his voice gentle but firm. "Naruto, how have you been coping with everything?"

Naruto replied absently, not lifting his head. "I'm managing, I guess. As well as anyone can in this situation."

Minato's eyes softened, seeing the weariness in his son's posture. He hesitated, searching for the right words. "I know it's been tough. But I want you to know, you've been crucial in turning the tide in our favor. Your efforts haven't gone unnoticed."

Naruto only offered a small reply, his tone devoid of enthusiasm. "Thanks, Dad. I appreciate it."

Minato felt a pang of guilt. His mind drifted back to the plan he and Danzo had concocted, placing Hinata closer to Naruto to motivate him to fight harder. The memory of their manipulation weighed heavily on him, but he couldn't deny that Naruto had become a more effective shinobi since then.

"How's your team?" Minato asked, changing the topic in an attempt to gauge his son's current state. "Are they holding up alright?"

"They're fine," Naruto replied simply, his voice flat.

Minato pressed on, trying to draw more from Naruto. "Are you pleased with your team? Is there anything you need? Any changes you think might help?"

Naruto finally looked up, his eyes sharp and questioning. "Why did you add Hinata to the team, Dad?"

Minato was taken aback by the direct question but replied calmly, hoping to ease the tension. "She had proven herself in the Anbu, and her skill set complements your team's needs. It made sense strategically."

Naruto's expression showed he wasn't satisfied with the answer. Minato continued, more firmly this time, trying to maintain his composure. "Remember, your team is a special unit, much like the Anbu. Transferring shinobi between elite units isn't out of the ordinary. It's all about putting the right people in the right places."

Naruto refused to press further, his silence signaling the end of that discussion. Minato sighed and settled down beside him, changing the topic once more. "Your birthday is coming up next week Naruto. I promise to be there to celebrate with you."

This only mildly lifted Naruto's spirits. "Thanks, Dad," he said, his mood still plain. "I guess that's one thing to look forward to."

Minato sighed again, his voice tinged with regret. "The war has taken so much from you, Naruto. You'll be turning 18 soon. These should be some of your best years. I wish things were different. I wish I could make it up to you somehow, once this is all over."

Naruto interrupted, his voice more assertive now. "What's our plan if we conquer all our enemies? How do we proceed from there?"

Minato thought for a moment before replying, carefully choosing his words. "We'll make decisions based on the situation at that moment. It's hard to predict the future, but we will adapt and do what's best for Konoha and its people."

Naruto spoke up again, more boldly this time. "How will you handle the inevitable uprisings against Konoha's occupation? We've seen it already in the lands we've taken. People resist. They don't want us there."

Minato considered his words carefully, his tone growing more serious. "You shouldn't fixate on things like that. Your role is to follow your orders and complete your missions. Leave the larger strategic issues to the higher-ups."

Naruto's frustration showed, his voice carrying a mix of defiance and concern. "We're heading towards that path, Dad. The citizens of the land of lightning have their own right to rebel against our occupation. We're forcing our will on them."

Minato's tone grew stern, his words meant to ground Naruto. "Don't let thoughts like that cloud your conduct in the war. We have a mission, and we need to see it through. If the toll is becoming too much, consider taking a break."

He placed a hand on Naruto's shoulder before standing up. "Rest, Naruto. I'll see you back at camp."

Minato headed down the hill, leaving Naruto alone in his thoughts. The young shinobi stared out at the camp, his mind still occupied with his duties. The war had changed him, and the uncertainty of what lay ahead filled him with a deep unease. His father's words echoed in his mind, but they did little to ease the turmoil within him. As the night grew darker, Naruto remained on the hill, grappling with the complex emotions and the heavy responsibilities that came with being a soldier in a seemingly endless war.
