Chapter 2
Suddenly, I was pulled out of my reminiscing by the bell. I sighed and walked with Edward to his class. I'd seen the new girl's schedule; she would be sitting next to him, as the seat next to him was the only one available. If I was correct, I knew that I was. I had a pretty good memory for these things. It was stupid, really—what did I expect to happen? But I was curious. And bored.
Just like all the other kids at Forks High School, I wanted to know who the new girl was. Edward, of course, would read her mind. But maybe he would talk to her. If he did, I wanted to be there. So I strolled ahead, entering the biology room before the others. I took a seat at Edward's table. They wouldn't mind; they wouldn't even know I was there.
Edward came in first, sitting down and looking at the wall—something I noticed he did a lot around humans. The girl, Bella, I remembered, came in trying hard not to stare at Edward. I could tell as she went up to the teacher, Mr. Banner, and handed him a note to sign. She tripped coming back to her seat. She was clumsy—that was interesting. As she took her seat, still glancing at Edward, Edward suddenly stiffened, leaning away from her. It was one of the strangest reactions I had ever seen from him. He seemed to utterly despise her. Of course, she noticed; you could tell just by looking at her face.
As I was pondering this, I suddenly understood—her blood appealed to him. A lot. I gauged this by his reaction. For the rest of the class, Edward stayed as far away as he could, either humanly or vampirely. At the end of class, he leaped up and walked swiftly out the door. I followed more slowly, so he beat me to the receptionist's office. He was trying to convince the secretary to change his class, so my theory was right: her blood was incredibly appetizing to him. This must be hard for him. Edward is very proud.
I was about to leave and walk out to the car when the girl, Bella, entered the secretary's office. Edward didn't realize at first. It wasn't until the door swung open again, and the girl rushed in, placing a slip of paper in a basket, that he stiffened and turned to glare at her. I took this moment to leave. If he killed her, I don't know if I'd be able to abstain myself. I gorge myself on human blood quite often, so it's not much of a bother when I have to spy on the Cullens at school, but if the blood was exposed, I don't know if I'd be able to stop. So I made my exit hastily and got into the Volvo. I was excited to get back to their house. I would be having a strategy meeting with Jane tonight, but that's just what we called them for Aro's benefit. Really, they were dates. I smiled, imagining her excitement upon seeing me; the feeling would be mutual. While I waited for the Cullens to arrive, I began thinking about that day we first spoke, how wary we were of each other. It put a smile on my face to think about.
Flashback*
Jane—such a beautiful name to match the person. I supposed I liked it quite a lot. You said you knew what I was. How do you know? She looked curiously at me. We are the same, but what am I? The question had been eating at me for days. I couldn't stand it. There was no natural explanation for it. There were stories, though. When my father had been sober, he told us stories about bloodsuckers. I wanted blood. I'd been resisting out of fear of being caught, but I wanted human blood so badly it hurt. I wasn't looking at her now, instead staring at the ground, angry, confused, and scared.
She walked forward, placing her wispy hand on my shoulder. "You're a vampire like me. Whoever turned you didn't tell you?" She sounded pitying. No—it came out meaner and faster than I meant it to. But she didn't move away. "If you come with me, I will show you." I wasn't sure what to make of that. She did seem like a trustworthy person, though, and I needed help badly. So, "Yes, I will accompany you."
"Excellent." Her pleasure at my answer made me smile as we walked side by side towards town, neither of us saying a word. When we reached the end of the forest, I could see her companions—two men I didn't recognize and the boy from the first day. The boy smiled at her and looked quizzically at me. "Sister, you found him?" he asked. She looked back at me with a coldness in her gaze that took me off guard.
"Yes, brother. He didn't even put up a fight."
What was that supposed to mean? I could feel myself turning invisible. It could happen on command, but if I was feeling embarrassed or shy, I would turn invisible. But when I was invisible and got too excited or relaxed, I would turn visible. The girl named Jane seemed to notice this and reached out, patting me on the hand. "This is my brother Alec, and those two are Felix and Demetri. I would like you to accompany me to meet our leader. He will be interested in your ability."
I was surprised by her words, mostly that she said "accompany me" instead of "accompany us." But the surprise of the others was easily ten times more. Felix and Demetri gaped, and Alec looked more interested all of a sudden, giving me an even more quizzical look. "I would be delighted to go," I said.
"Then we leave tomorrow morning. First, I want to show you how to feed."
After we finished feeding, as she called it, I walked with her back to the hotel her party was staying in. The streets were deserted and very quiet—relaxing, even. But I broke the silence nonetheless because I had never taken a human life. In fact, I had never seen a dead body. Well, that wasn't true. In the past week, I'd seen a couple, but I had ended a life and enjoyed the blood so much it scared me. I simply couldn't keep it in. "Does it get easier?"
After a pause, she said, "No." She turned to me, her ashy velvet eyes on me, and we stopped in the alley. "But you need to look like it does because these people are people. The vampires will kill you if you voice that kind of weakness aloud. The only way to survive is to be crueler than the others and use your gifts to do it."
The way she said it surprised me, and I stepped back, bumping against the alley wall. "Are you cruel?"
The question came out quieter than I intended. I already had an opinion of her. She was the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen, and she had saved me and shown me what I was. She couldn't be cruel, right? She didn't answer for a long time, staring into my eyes. Suddenly, her eyes flickered away. "I am cruel," she said, and she stalked off, leaving me alone to contemplate.
I was jarred by my thoughts once again by Alice. She was talking—it seemed she'd been talking for a while. It's easy to sidetrack me, to be honest, but my gift gives me a lot of natural talent. Alice was saying something about Edward leaving. This was news. He's most likely going to the Denali coven. I wondered if he'd reconsidered Tanya's request. But he wouldn't do that; he was thoroughly not interested in her, I knew. So he must be trying to get away from the temptation of the new girl's blood. That's why he seemed so angry. Edward hates failing or letting Carlisle down.
I patted him on the shoulder. Of course, he won't feel that, but why not? He stopped the car, and everyone got out, including me, as he drove off. Alice began explaining everything, as the others knew she would. That was probably the reason for their silence in the car. As we all walked back the rest of the way to the house, I took note of everything Alice said. This was the first development in weeks and quite a story to tell
