Colette stayed by the hole in the wall to look out at the town she had lived in all her life. 30 long years had gone by and tonight she would vanish from the earth. She would be burned to death.
She had no regrets when it came to her and Roman. He was the love of her life but her family would never approve of her being married to a sheep farmer. They didn't care that his family provided the entire town with wool. He would never be good enough in their eyes.
She sighed quietly and turned her head when she heard someone hum to himself. She saw a young man sweeping the floor with a broom and slowly moving towards her cell. It felt odd to her. She didn't think anyone ever cleaned the cells from how dirty it all was. He moved over to her cell and looked over his shoulder to make sure no one was watching him in there. He turned his eyes to her and gave her a smile.
"Roman sent me," he said.
"I know you," she said.
"Seth Rollins," he nodded.
"What are you doing sweeping the floors? Your family is one of the riches ones in town. You have people to sweep your floors," she said.
He chuckled and winked at her.
"True," he said. "But I don't care about money. I care about love. I have my own heart stuck with a woman it's not supposed to belong to. I was going to leave town with you and Roman last night. I was waiting with horses for you but Baron apparently kept a watch at your home to make sure you stayed put."
"I didn't," she said.
"No, you didn't," he chuckled lowly. "I like you. You remind me of my Becky."
"I don't know anyone named Becky," she said.
"She's not from around here. She's a wildling," he said.
She gasped and placed her hand over her heart.
"Roman... He... He..." She stuttered.
"He's safe with them. They don't eat humans. They just like to make people like us think they do so that we will never come for them," he said.
"But you did," she said.
"I ran into her one day I took a walk in the forest. I walked off the trail and ran from the servant following me. I just wanted to be alone but I ended up finding her. She's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. I can't believe someone so precious as her can love me but she does, and I love her," he said.
She stepped up to the bars and grabbed on to them with her hands.
"Can you get me out of here?" She asked.
"Not here. Baron has the only key," he said.
"So everything is lost?" She asked.
"Nothing is lost," he said. "Stay brave tonight. Don't panic and start shouting my name. No matter how close it might get, you will not burn. You have my word."
"And you have mine that I will remain calm," she said.
"Good," he said.
He moved a hand to one of hers and gently patted it.
"Tonight you'll be free," he said.
"Or I'll burn but that's also freedom when the alternative is Baron," she said.
He chuckled and nodded before moving away from her again. He started humming again and moved back the way he had come. Once he was out of sight, she moved back to the hole in the wall to look out. Half of the day had already passed. Soon it would all be over, one way or another.
