Chapter 11
Kakarot was back to training once again, alongside Vegeta.
Their training was interrupted by Beerus, who had a question for Kakarot.
"Kakarot?" Beerus calls to the Saiyan
"Yes, Lord Beerus?" Kakarot asks
"I have something to ask you." Beerus answers
"What is it?" Kakarot questions
"What would you say if I asked you to succeed me and become the next God of Destruction?" Beerus asks
"W-what?! Me?!" Kakarot is taken back by the question
"Yes, you" Beerus replies
"Honestly, I'd have thought Vegeta would have been the one you asked, I mean, he is learning the technique Gods of Destruction are using." Kakarot admits
"He did ask me." Vegeta says "I said no."
"Really? Why?" Kakarot asks
"Just not my thing." Vegeta replies "It's not something I want to do and I don't think I could fill that role as expected"
"So?" Beerus questions "What do you say?"
"Uhh...I don't know" Kakarot says
"Why?" Beerus asks
"I'm not sure I'm cut out for it myself." Kakarot admits "Being a God of Destruction requires something I don't think I'm able to do."
"You're a Saiyan, your race decimated planets without having such power, it's not that much different." Beerus says "The only difference is you do it with a purpose. You do it for the good of the universe."
"I'm a Saiyan, yes, but I'm not like that" Kakarot replies with a shrug "Of course, I'm a lot like them in a sense, but I'm not as ruthless and aggressive like they were."
"I'd beg to differ." Vegeta says "You can be just as brutal as they were if you want to or feel you need to be."
"That's different!" Kakarot exclaims "They did it with the sole purpose of destroying planets, I do it when I don't have another choice."
"You could use this position to save the universe when being as you usually are isn't enough anymore.
It was clear Beerus was looking for a successor, and he didn't want to hang around. He wanted someone trained and ready for when it was his time to retire from the role.
"I'll consider it." Kakarot says, hoping to get Beerus off his back a little about it
"Fine." Beerus says "But don't take long to think about it. I want the next God of Destruction trained up and ready."
The Saiyan's got on with their training.
Kakarot worked hard making sure his mind was clear, calm and collected. He took a moment to close his eyes, calm himself and do as Whis told him. When Kakarot felt ready, he opened his eyes again. What Kakarot didn't notice, was although still in his base state, he now sported the silver eyes of Ultra Instinct. Whis noticed but didn't say anything, he didn't want to throw Kakarot off at all.
The training continued and Whis noticed that Kakarot seemed to be more at peace internally, he could feel it. He could feel the calm in his heart and mind. Kakarot moved with grace, and was improving a lot with using Ultra Instinct in his base state.
He and Vegeta eventually finished their training many hours later and left Beerus' planet.
"Kakarot?" Vegeta asks
"Yeah?" Kakarot looks over at the Saiyan
"Are you really considering becoming the next God of Destruction?" Vegeta asks "You don't strike me as the type."
"Honestly, I'm not sure right now." Kakarot admits as he and Vegeta head to capsule corp where the other Z fighters are. "He's not just asking me to succeed him, but to do what he does, I don't know if I'm cut out for it."
"I thought you'd outright refuse." Vegeta says "I was surprised to hear you say you'd consider it."
"I mean, he asked for a reason, though I'm unsure what the reason is." Kakarot says "I seem to be more on the path of the angels, so I'm confused as to why he'd ask me in the first place."
"What did Beerus ask you to do?" Bulma asks overhearing Kakarot's reply to Vegeta as they headed inside.
This sparked the curiosity of the others.
"Kakarot was asked to be the next God of Destruction." Vegeta says noticing Kakarot's hesitation to answer
"Wait...what?!" Krillin says completely taken by surprise "Really?!"
"Yeah..." Kakarot replies "I don't know if I could ever go that route."
"Well I'm sure he has his reasons to destroy planets...right?" Bulma asks while at the same time feeling like that was a stupid question
"Well...that's questionable" Kakarot replies "I mean he spared earth because of the food, but who knows why he wanted to destroy earth before that!"
"I'm sure there's more to it than that." Bulma says
"Are you going to do it?" Piccolo asks
"I don't know, probably not." Kakarot admits "I did tell him I'd think about it, and I will, he must have asked for good reason."
"I thought he'd ask you first, Vegeta" Piccolo says "You seem more suited for it."
"I turned him down when he asked" Vegeta says "It's not me, not anymore."
"What made you consider it?" Bulma asks looking at Kakarot
"Part of me felt put on the spot." Kakarot says "But another part of me understands that the role of the Gods of Destruction is to destroy to bring new life and such. I get some of the sentiment behind the role. I just don't know if I could ever do it. Destroying whole planets? That's a lot of lives to take, and I'd have to do that. I'd have to judge them and essentially see if they're worthy of staying alive. That's a big thing to do, and I'm not sure if I could say yes to such a role."
"What's the worst that could happen if you say no?" Bulma asks
"He might decide to destroy Earth." Kakarot shrugs
"And destroy any chance at some of the best food he's ever had?" Bulma questions "I doubt it."
"Do you think he'd really do that?" Krillin asks
"I don't know." Kakarot says
"Truth is, if Beerus decides Earth no longer has value, he will destroy it, good food or not." Vegeta says
"But would he really do it because Kakarot says no?" Bulma asks
"Who knows" Piccolo says "Beerus is a bit of a wild card.
"Does that mean you may have to?" Krillin asks
"Maybe, I don't know." Kakarot answers "If it protects Earth, then I will. I will have to weigh my options. See what he says if I say no, and if he mentions destroying Earth, I'll just tell him I'll do it."
"Kakarot?" Vegeta asks
"Yeah?" Kakarot asks
"Your eyes, they're different." Vegeta says as the others look and now notice it too.
"What do you mean?" Kakarot questions
"They're silver, like when you transform into Ultra Instinct." Vegeta says
"Are they?" Kakarot asks confused "But I'm not using that form."
No one else truly registered it until Vegeta mentioned it. Now everyone else has realised the difference, now understanding why Kakarot seemed to look a little differently than before.
"Well, are you using the technique right now?" Vegeta asks
"Well, I don't know." Kakarot replies "It's meant to be a subconscious thing."
As a tester, Vegeta tries to take a swing at Kakarot whom instinctively moves out of the way.
Kakarot stares at Vegeta for a moment, surprised by what his own body did. He fully expected the hit to land on him, yet it didn't. His body acted on instinct alone, without Kakarot even having to think about it.
"I think that answers the question." Vegeta says "You seem to be using it and haven't even realised it."
"Weird, I didn't think I had that control over it yet." Kakarot admits
"Apparently you do." Vegeta says
Kakarot had a lot to think about, he was unsure what too do. He had a lot going on. He did not want to kill and destroy in the way Beerus does, he doesn't want to take lives if he doesn't have to, he felt that wasn't who he is.
Kakarot sighs to himself. He wanted to say no, but he wasn't sure how Beerus would react to it, especially since Vegeta had said no too. He wasn't who Beerus thought he was. At least not right now. He guessed he could become that person, but he wondered if that's even what he wanted. Would he even have the heart to do it? Would he even be a good enough God of Destruction? That was something he did not know, he did not want to take on such a role if he could not fulfil the role to it's truest extent. Maybe Beerus would find someone more suited for the role, that Kakarot wasn't sure of, but he felt somewhere out there, someone who could do it, would be able to. Maybe Kakarot would be able to do it one day, but not right now, not in his current state. He had so much to focus on already. He had to work on Ultra Instinct, even if it seemed he was using it continually in his base state, which confused him as he didn't feel any different than before. He didn't feel a lack of emotion. Sure, he felt calmer than before, maybe that's why he's able to use it as he is now. Even with this new found ability, he knew training it wasn't over, he knew he had more to work on to make it better, more usable. He had no idea if it was currently causing a stamina drain or anything, as if it was, it was miniscule. He had to ensure it did not cause any drain at all, that was the whole idea behind using it in his base state, and then move on to incorporating it into his other forms.
There was so much already going on, that adding becoming a God of Destruction to that may be too much. He did not want to disappoint Beerus, and he appreciated the fact that Beerus saw the potential in him to be his successor, but at least right now, it wasn't the time...that's if there would ever be the time.
A few days later, Kakarot and Vegeta went back to training on Beerus' planet.
"So, what are you going to tell him?" Vegeta asks as the Saiyan's travelled to the planet
"I'm going to tell him that at least right now, I can't do it." Kakarot replies "Maybe one day I'll see myself as able to, maybe I never will, but right now I have a lot going on and I think it would be too much on top of everything I'm doing right now. I have Black, Frieza, Ultra Instinct training, and my family to think about right now. I can't add more to that."
"I don't think he'll be too pleased." Vegeta says "He wasn't exactly all rainbows and unicorns when I said no."
"I can imagine." Kakarot says in reply "Especially since you were the most likely candidate. I get it, he wants someone strong and worthy, he saw that in me, and in you. I just don't think I'm cut out for it right now, I don't know if I'll ever be."
"That's why I refused." Vegeta replies "Beerus wants me to be someone I used to be, I'm just not that person anymore. I've worked hard to come away from that part of my life, and I'm not undoing all of that just so he can retire one day. My past is behind me."
"I just hope he will be understanding." Kakarot sighs as they arrive at Beerus' planet.
Beerus approaches the Saiyan's with Whis in tow. The curiosity could be seen on Beerus' face. He was somewhat eager to hear what Kakarot had to say, but something on his face said he wasn't expecting too much.
"So, Kakarot." Beerus says "Have you decided?"
"Yes..." Kakarot sighs
"And?" Beerus asks
"I..." Kakarot sighs again "I honestly don't think I'm cut out for it right now. I've got so much going on, and I think adding to my already full plate will be too much for me. Maybe one day, once all this is over I can become the person you want me to be, maybe I can live up to you, maybe I can be good enough to be the Destroyer God you clearly see I can be, but right now, I just want to deal with what I've got going on before adding more to it. I do appreciate your offer. If you're okay with it, once this is all over, I'll have another think about it, I'll see if I feel I'm ready or even fully capable of becoming that person."
"I had a feeling you'd say something like that." Beerus admits "Though I thought it would be a straight no. I didn't think you'd come back to the thought after all you've dealt with is sorted."
"I see that you asked me for a reason. You clearly see that I am capable of doing the job, and since Vegeta said no, you clearly trust me enough to want me to succeed you one day." Kakarot says "There's no guarantee I'll ever do it, as I'm not sure myself, but I'm willing to think more deeply about it once the stress I'm already dealing with is over."
"I respect that." Beerus says "I do hope one day you'll take up the role, but if not, I don't blame you either. It is a big responsibility."
"I appreciate that." Kakarot replies "If I don't, I'm sure someone worthy is out there."
"I'm yet to find them, but you're probably right." Beerus says "It's not easy finding beings as strong as you 2 are, thus far, you 2 are the strongest I've come across."
"Really?" Kakarot asks curiously
"Yes." Beerus says "You Saiyan's are far more capable than I ever thought, and you 2...you're different than the rest. Far more determination than what I've seen from other Saiyan's"
"That means a lot coming from you." Kakarot says
The Saiyan's begin their training.
Kakarot was ready to further pursue his Ultra Instinct further. He had clearly worked it into his base state, but now he was working on getting stronger, honing the technique far better than he already has. He knew there was more to it than he was aware of, he was sure of it. His silver eyes filled with the determination to push beyond his current limits, break them and get stronger. Kakarot refused to go beyond his base state during the training. It was hard since Kakarot was already so used to it being a form, since that's how he achieved it, but it was getting easier since he's been in the state of mind for several days now, but he had to keep going.
Vegeta too was working hard on increasing his speed and strength. He worked hard with Beerus to further the Hakai and better understand and come into his own with Ultra Ego. He had made good progress with it, but it too still needed work, so he was determined to continue to push his limits and even surpass Kakarot. That goal was always there, and surpassing Kakarot would never go away. he was willing to go as far as he could to do so.
Whis did not go easy on either of them. He knew of their strength, capabilities and potential. He knew going easy on them would not get them to go further but make them feel too comfortable. Whis needed to test them beyond what they felt was comfortable. He needed to push them
"Kakarot!" Vegeta calls over approaching the Saiyan
"Huh?" Kakarot stops and turns to Vegeta
"We have a problem." Vegeta says
"What's wrong?" Kakarot asks
"Bulma just got hold of me." Vegeta replies "It's Frieza. He's on Earth."
"Shit." Kakarot says "We need to go, now."
"We need to be mindful of that new form." Vegeta reminds him "Remember how easily he took out Gas."
"true, but it won't save him." Kakarot says "He knows he always gets fucked up by me."
"Seriously, Kakarot" Vegeta says firmly "Right now, there's a good chance he's stronger than us. Look, I want him gone just as much as you do, but we cannot underestimate him."
"True, but we've gotten stronger since then." Kakarot says his silver eyes sparkling with confidence.
"Come on." Vegeta says "We don't have time to mess about. We have to go."
Kakarot and Vegeta quickly leave and race to Earth, arriving finally at the location that Bulma had provided Vegeta.
"Well, well, well" Frieza says "Looks who finally shoed up.
"What do you want now?" Vegeta asks clearly annoyed
"Do you really have to ask?" Frieza says rolling his eyes
"This is the end for you, Frieza." Kakarot snaps
"Oh?" Frieza seems intrigued "You seem awful confident, monkey."
"You've been given enough chances, but you just keep fucking that up." Kakarot says crossing his arms "I just don't understand why you can't just leave us and this planet alone. out of all the planets you could go after, you STILL come after us. I just don't get it."
"Oh come on!" Frieza laughs "I said I'd destroy the Saiyan's, and if destroying this worthless planet ensures you 2 die too, then so be it."
"That won't happen, I assure you." Kakarot replies
"Hmm." Frieza says "You think you can really defeat me?"
"Not defeat you..." Kakarot replies "Kill you."
"Now that's an amusing thought." Frieza taunts
"Taunt us all you want." Vegeta says "But we know you fear us like you feared the Saiyan race."
"Fear you?" Frieza laughs "What a joke."
"We know that's why you destroyed planet Vegeta." Vegeta says "You feared the rise of the Super Saiyan, and destroyed the planet in hopes it would stop it. Only to not realise that the Saiyan's you were afraid of were us, and one was right under your nose, while the other lived here on Earth. The Super Saiyan may have never come to be if you had not destroyed our planet."
"You Vegeta, you are nothing without your race. You are a prince of a dead race, and Kakarot? I wouldn't really say you're a Saiyan. You lived your life here on Earth. You barely know what a Saiyan is!"
"I know more than you think." Kakarot replies "Me living on Earth doesn't make me any less of a Saiyan. I was born a Saiyan, I live as a Saiyan and I'll die a Saiyan. I'll be the Saiyan that ends you. I'll make sure you relive that fear, and I'll make sure it's the last thing you feel. You talk like you know anything, but where's the rest of your race, Frieza? It seems it's only you left. I wonder who killed them..."
This comment made Frieza scowl, and become angrier.
The 2 Saiyan's prepared to fight. Vegeta took on Perfected Super Saiyan Blue, but Kakarot didn't bother transforming.
Frieza noticed this and was somewhat confused. Kakarot usually transformed, even if it were a lower level transformation, but nothing. He looked at Kakarot for a moment. Kakarot's silver eyes sparkled with a determination like no other. Frieza remembered those eyes. Ultra Instinct. yet, he was in his base state...how? This somehow angered Frieza even more. He felt that Kakarot saw him as a joke.
Kakarot remembered that this was his chance. He was going to make an example out of Frieza. He was doing this because after giving Frieza life again, after giving him a chance, he still somehow seemed ungrateful. Frieza wouldn't have this form he has or anything he has now if Kakarot had not said he'd ask for Frieza to be brought back to life for helping during the tournament. he wanted Frieza to pay, for that, and for taking away his planet, his family, and everything he should have had before. Kakarot had his life stolen away from him. He was grateful for the life he had now, and wouldn't change it, but he still mourned the life he could have had, should have had.
Frieza was the burden that Kakarot was ready to be free of, once and for all.
Vegeta understood. He came to terms with the loss of his planet, his family and all that. He was content with his life now, he had his own family, and a life here on Earth, but he was also ready for Frieza to pay for everything he did. He was ready to make Frieza suffer for everything he did wrong. He was more than happy to assist Kakarot in avenging the Saiyan race. Though Vegeta's interests didn't always align with Kakarot's, this one did and he seemed content with it. They had a common goal.
Neither Saiyan could say what their life would be like if their planet had not been destroyed, but the possibility of what could have been was taken away from them without a choice, and they were not happy with that.
Frieza's new form was powerful, but they weren't going to let that stop them from fighting for what they believe in, for fighting for everyone who died at the hands of Frieza, the planets lost, the lives, the suffering caused, all of it and more. It was time to put an end to Frieza, not just for them, but for everyone else who's lost something or someone because of Frieza. For the universe.
The Saiyan's launches their attack on Frieza, but he seemed unphased. He swiftly dodged and blocked their attacks with ease. With little effort, Frieza was able to fend them off. Kakarot became frustrated, he thought this would be enough, his base for with Ultra Instinct was powerful in itself, but it wasn't enough.
Kakarot and Vegeta put distance between themselves and before they could think, or do anything, Frieza launched himself forward toward them with incredible speed, simultaneously punching them both in the abdomen, causing them to crash to the ground.
"Fuck..." Kakarot groans trying to get to his feet.
"You see, you cannot defeat me." Frieza taunts
"You may be stronger now, but not for long." Vegeta snaps
"You can try, but it won't end the way you hope it will." Frieza remarks
"If I'm going down, you're coming with me!" Vegeta snaps as he takes his Ultra Ego form and launches himself toward Frieza.
"Vegeta! No!" Kakarot shouts
The Saiyan prince ignores Kakarot and continues to try attack.
Frieza lands another mighty blow, but Vegeta gets back up. "No matter how much you hurt me, I'll always get back up stronger than before." Vegeta says with a smirk, wiping blood from his bottom lip. "Kakarot, if you don't get in on this, I'll kill the bastard myself."
"You're not getting that kill to yourself!" Kakarot replies
Kakarot takes his True Ultra Instinct form, knowing his base state with Ultra Instinct wasn't enough. He was going to pour all his emotions into this fight.
Frieza was blocking all of Vegeta's attacks when Kakarot appeared and caught him off guard with a punch in the face, sending Frieza plummeting to the ground.
"All you had to do was leave us alone." Kakarot snaps "But no, you couldn't help yourself could you? You had a chance and yet, you STILL fucked it up. If you'd not come back here, you'd have been left alone, but of course, you just can't help yourself, can you?"
Kakarot appeared in Front of Frieza as he pulled himself to his feet and punched him in the stomach, causing Frieza to keel over in pain.
"I thought you'd have learned by now." Kakarot says "You could have gone anywhere in this universe, but no, you just HAD to come back here didn't you?"
Kakarot grabs Frieza by the throat, lifting him off the floor and forcing the tyrant to look him directly in the eyes. "I thought you'd know better than to come back here, but no, you're fucking stupid."
Kakarot punches Frieza in the stomach again as he continues. "You're just an annoyance to me, and I'm fucking done with you."
Kakarot threw Frieza aside, sending him crashing into a nearby boulder.
Vegeta stood, surprised by what he was seeing. He watched as Kakarot let loose on Frieza. Any pent up anger he kept inside was let out and Frieza was on the receiving end of all of it. Kakarot let out his true Saiyan rage, letting it flow freely, and fuel his fight.
Kakarot began charging up a Kamehameha. "It's time for your bullshit to end."
Noticing what Kakarot was doing, Vegeta walked over and stood beside Kakarot, charging up his Gatlik Gun.
Both Saiyan's focused all their energy into the attack, in hopes it would be enough.
They fired their attacks, both beams merging into one.
Frieza put up a fight, doing his best to push back the attack, with his own attack.
The beams clashed violently, the ground shaking beneath their feet, small pieces of rock being lifted from the ground and floating around them. Kakarot and Vegeta braced their on the ground, their feet digging into the ground slightly, to stop them from sliding back.
The Saiyan's pushed themselves harder, refusing to give up. they couldn't. If they gave up, Frieza would have taken yet another home of theirs and take away all those they loved. Not again, not ever. They were not going to let Frieza win.
the Beams continued to struggle, until Frieza was overpowered and the attack from the Saiyan's left him rather injured.
Before Kakarot and Vegeta could finish Frieza off once and for all, Frieza made his escape. Kakarot, more angry that Frieza tried to fire a Ki blast at him, but Frieza dodged before vanishing from sight.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me." Kakarot snaps, his voice dripping in anger
"We'll get the bastard." Vegeta replies "He knows now he has nothing on us."
"I know, but how many fucking times have we got to go through this before we can finish him off?!" Kakarot says angrily "How many more time is he going to threaten Earth before we finally kill him?!"
"I say, let's get more training in, as I'm sure he's going to do the same." Vegeta says "If we can get stronger again, he won't stand a chance!"
"Fine." Kakarot says, anger still in his voice "Let's get this done."
The Saiyan's planned to get back to training the next morning as it was late in the day and both were spent after their fight.
