Exploring the world has only given her the reprieve that she desperately sought for. Silence as she ponders, the soft blowing wind on her cheeks as the trees rustle. Tamako turns her head, glancing at the dark spiky hair in front of her.
In all her time, she never knew she'd share a moment like this.
"Where do you intend to go?" She asks, feeling the sun burn the back of her head in a pleasant way, one that comforted her all the same.
Sasuke mulls over her words, not even twitching his head to reply back. "Wherever my feet take me." It's a simple answer, one that those who sought to reflect would take. She understands all too well.
"I see." And just like that, a comfortable silence envelops the two for just a quick moment. "Why don't you come with me?" Her feet softly glide over the grass, hopping over a small creek. "Just for a little."
The Uchiha dwells over her words, his head finally tilting back and she spots his Rinnegan peeking from the bangs he'd been growing out. "Alright."
She shows him her favorite shore in Fire where the sand kisses the glowing blue algae that just seems to go on and on throughout the shore. It stretched endlessly with the bioluminescence shimmering as if it were the mirror of the starry sky, contracting beautifully against the setting sun, hues of orange and pink against blue. Here, the soft waves danced with the glowing algae to a rhythm only the ocean knew. It reminded her of a certain trio, one that Sasuke knew all too well. She wonders if he had also made the same connection.
They watched the last few rays of sunlight dip below the horizon in silence until darkness descended, leaving only the algae to glow with only the stars as company.
Tamako hums, her palms resting on the rocky wet crevices. "It's beautiful, isn't it? Perhaps one day, you can show someone you cherish this scene." She finally opens her eyes, waiting to adjust to the pitch blackness before standing up. "We should head out now."
Their journey goes like this: she shows him her favorite parts of the east along the Fire and Water border, and he reminisces his time with Team Taka.
"Suigetsu always had something to pick with Karin." He says once, sitting beside a small fire as the leftover meat smoke dries. A kunai scrapes across a piece of firewood, carving out something that hasn't yet taken shape. "And Jugo would rather talk to the birds than them."
"And you?" Tamako muses back, poking the fire with a crystal stick, embers of fire twitching at every movement.
Sasuke doesn't say another word, eyes closed but she could spot his eyes rovering over his eyelids as memories come flashing back.
A large pop from the fire disrupts the silence. "Get some sleep Sasuke." She shuffles into her small bedroll, her back to the fire. "Tomorrow, we'll see them again."
. . .
They trek to Orochimaru's southeast base by Kiri, using chakra to walk over the water before arriving at the large doors in the middle of the ocean. It was well disguised as a small insignificant stone island.
A man drops down from his hiding spot, unmasking his ANBU mask before large eyes peer up at them. "What are you two doing here?" Yamato asks.
She greets him before jutting her head forward. "If you're here, that must mean Orochimaru is as well."
Yamato makes a vague groan noise. "And if that's true?"
Tamako waves him off with her hand. "Nothing serious. I'm here for Karin."
"Karin?" Yamato questions, "The red-head?" He winces a bit. "Then what she said was true."
"What's true?" She asks, following Yamato inside the hideout.
"That you'll come back for her."
"She can't stay all holed up with an old man like Orochimaru forever." Tamako shoots back, the edge of her lips tilted up. "Karin will stay with me, I'll make sure nothing goes wrong."
Karin's position is a confusing one. Former associate of Orochimaru, high enough to be the former watchkeeper of one of the four main bases and former member of Team Taka that assaulted the four kage.
But with Karin's position as a support ninja, her role in the actual assault was minimal. It also helps that she willingly went with Konoha after the Danzo fiasco, and despite breaking out of jail, she did help take down the massive wood structure that was wiping out the remaining Alliance's forces during the war with her chakra chains.
Anyways, what Tamako was getting at, is that Karin is a low risk individual to throw the world into chaos, and someone like Tamako would be enough to ensure it'll stay low.
Yamato grumbles a little more, arms folded before he relents. "Fine. I know Kakashi-senpai trusts you… so I'll let this happen. That still means that I'm reporting this though."
"That's fine." They stop at a door and Yamato slides it open.
"Sasuke-kun? And Tamako-kun as well."
That slithery voice, it was one she would never forget in all of years of living. Orochimaru gives a grin at them, snake-like and all as his tongue slithers out, licking his lips. "What fine specimens to visit me… what can I do for you?"
"I'm not the one leading around." Sasuke admits, turning to Tamako.
At his glance, she regards Orochimaru calmly. "Hello Snake Sannin." Then around the room. "By chance, do you know where Ka—"
In a blink, red enters her vision, a huff of air leaving her lungs from the impact alone.
"Tamako!" Karin gushes, her arms wrapping around her back in a tight squeeze. "You came! You really came!"
Her eyes soften, patting Karin's wild red mane. "Of course. I did promise you."
"Then, where shall we go?" The Uzumaki smiles, bouncing on her heels. "I've always wanted to see Iwa's bamboo forests! Maybe Kiri's pink beaches?" Then, her face turns red. "I-is Sasuke coming with us too?"
Tamako contemples for a little before giving the girl a sad smile. "For a bit." Karin still holds that puppy love. Even after Sasuke almost killed her. Pierced her.
Karin preens at her words, sending Sasuke a few looks before Suigetsu pops up out of nowhere, sending the red-head a dissatisfied look. "Karin… did you forget? Sasuke almost killed you!"
The Uzumaki blanches at his words, her eyes flying down to the ground as her grip tightens around Tamako. "Y-yeah but…"
Suigetsu rolls his eyes, "It can't be helped." And turns to both Tamako and Sasuke. "Sorry guys but it looks like I'll be tagging along."
"Suigetsu!"
"Maa maa." Tamako glides her fingers through Karin's unruly red hair, trying to calm her down. "The more the merrier, right?"
Sasuke just seems to age on the spot, his shoulders slouching just a tiny bit, almost near unnoticeable.
Tamako grins at the sight.
"Hmm… it looks like all my best subjects will be leaving the nest." Orochimaru finally says, a soft hiss echoing. He turns to the Shouton User, peering deep into her eyes as he crosses his legs on the chair. "Though, I must say…"
"Say what?" Her chakra cloaks her defensively without a thought, something that Orochimaru easily notices.
"Your chakra… is incredibly refined. Surpassing nearly all I've met." A snake slithers down his chair, slowly running up her leg before tightening just slightly around her hips. "It's almost a shame that you aren't taking full advantage of it."
Sasuke unsheathes his chokuto threateningly, "What do you mean?"
Orochimaru cackles lightly and the pale snake loosens, resting by wrapping its body around Tamako's fingers. It's a small snake, just quarter a meter long at best. Nothing it could do could hurt her.
"Nature chakra beckons to you. You've been absorbing it and converting it naturally… at a loss." Orochimaru snickers again as if it were the funniest joke. "Why convert when you can wield?"
"And risk turning to stone?" Tamako counters back with a raised brow. "What I do is none of your concern."
"Perhaps not." He reaches and the group tenses, the pale snake slithering over. "But it's a shame." His eyes seem to glow, the poor lighting flickering. "A waste."
Tamako dwells on the Snake Sannin's words, there was something he was alluding to. Something that he'd only offer if she bit the bait first. "Then what do you suggest?" There's curiosity in her voice as she asks, because at her core, she loves to learn. Orochimaru has learned thousands of Kinjutsu and enhanced them.
She feels Sasuke's hand tighten at her wrist, but she ignores it. Orochimaru couldn't hurt her, can't hurt her.
Not if Orochimaru wanted a death wish.
"It's simple." The Sannin says, glancing at his newly painted nails. "Become a Sage."
He says it like it's natural. As if the next proper evolution was exactly that.
"It's not as simple as you say." She banters back, "You speak as if becoming a Sage is simple without the help of a Noble Summon."
Orochimaru raises an eyebrow at her. "Has Sasuke-kun not convinced you?"
She turns to Sasuke with confusion, "Convince me of what?"
"What is your goal, Orochimaru?" Sasuke seethes quietly, distrust in his eyes. "What do you have to gain in getting her?"
The Sannin snickers again, "Nothing that you're thinking of, Sasuke-kun." He takes out a large scroll. "I have nothing to gain, but you: everything." He lays it out on the ground, the large scroll unraveling to reveal a set of names, each older judging by the fading ink. There were a few names she recognized, the newer ones at least.
Orochimaru
Mitarashi Anko
Uchiha Sasuke
Yakushi Kabuto
"You want me to learn Senjutsu with the snakes?" Her voice pitches a little higher than usual at her disbelief. "They'll consume me if I fail a single trial." The snakes were the harshest of the Noble Summons. While the toads of Mount Myōboku carefully trained their summoners in the art in hopes that the world could be saved, the snakes looked for those who were greedy and willing to sacrifice anything to attain power.
In all things considered, it's a miracle that Sasuke was able to find Aoda, his main snake summon. That snake was absolutely adorable, mild-tempered and well-mannered. Unlike Manda who was prideful and snobbish and very interested in eating humans, Aoda didn't really care about how humans tasted. He also called Sasuke, Sasuke-sama, and that alone was very cute. Almost the same in how Katsuyu calls Sakura, Sakura-chan.
"Does this feat seem all too incomprehensible to the likes of you?" Orochimaru hands her a brush. "I believe the snakes will be enamored with you."
She sighs, "And if I fail the trials, well, that would just be one obstacle out of your way."
Orochimaru cackles, his voice echoing in the dark damp cave. The rest of her companions look at each other uneasily.
"M-maybe this isn't a good idea." Karin grabs the edge of Tamako's sleeves, tugging it lightly.
Sasuke turns to her with a shake of his head. "You've seen Kabuto." He said it as if it were damning. Well, he made a good point. Kabuto had become something beyond human, but not exactly a snake nor dragon. Something in between, something unnatural.
"The snakes would not try to consume someone like you." Orochimaru reassures, fingers tapping the scroll once again. "Unlike Kabuto or I, your natural disposition with Natural Chakra thanks to Mokuton…" He trails off with a nasty grin, "The White Snake Sage will not need to bite you to inject Nature Chakra because you are already imbued."
Mastery of Senjutsu would mean she would reach the pinnacle of Shinobi. To become a Sage is to reach the last stage of evolution. Sage Mode would fill the holes she was insecure about. Her close-combat, while not bad, falters heavily after using the [System] over and over. Her bad habits could be rectified using Sage Mode. The enhanced physical strength, speed, stamina, and most importantly, enhanced reflexes, perception and durability.
It was power that she desperately wanted, a power that could ensure she would be able to protect herself and others. A power she coveted.
"Orochimaru…" Her voice was dangerously low. Even after all these years, hating but not loathing, respecting but not honoring, after all, Orochimaru was still a slimy bastard. He knows of her desires and she fell for his trap. "Can you ensure that no permanent bodily harm will befall me? That my mental capabilities of now will be the same when I come back?"
She hears protest but she ignores it, staring deep into the summoning contract before her. The brush in her hand was warm from how long she'd been holding it. "Do you not trust in your own abilities?" Orochimaru says.
Tamako smirks. "Of course." And signs her name right under Kabuto's.
She feels a new imprint on her soul, so subtle that she almost waved it off as a shudder from how damp it was in this cave. The ink seems to dry instantly and Orochimaru rolls up the scroll and hides it in his robe. "It's done."
Sasuke's grip on her wrist is almost painful, and she finally looks up, staring at his base Sharingan. "Are you crazy?"
"No. No I'm not." She replies back soothingly, her palm resting on his with a look. "Do you think I'm incapable enough?" She turns away with a smile. "If worse comes to worse, I'll reverse summon away and concede that I overestimated my abilities."
Sasuke gives her the most upset look he can conjure and she laughs into the air.
"Give me one week." Tamako declares, "If I'm not back in one week, summon me out." She uses the same formula she gave to Itachi back in the war, to Sasuke. Capable of summoning herself from long distance, it's risky if it falls into the wrong hands, but she trusts Sasuke.
"Then promise me."
"I promise." She crosses her heart, stares deep into his eyes and promises. Give him an honest look with soft eyes. After all that they've been through together, it's the least she could do.
She signs and slams her hands to the ground, "Kuchiyose no Jutsu." A puff of smoke envelops her vision, her body perception tilts as she finds herself crouched before an abandoned building, a draft of stale air emits. It's an old red building with vines overtaking a small portion of it, but she could feel the nature chakra emitting from the cave alone. It was powerful enough that sprouts began to grow at her feet. But not overwhelmingly so.
She tags the outside of the cave before entering. It's dark so she courses her chakra down her feet and into the ground, mapping out as she walks. She could feel the presence of a few, watching her carefully under the covers of the shadow.
"Welcome." A voice cuts through the cave, echoing. She could hear drops of water falling from stalagmite into small puddles, the air wet and smelling like sulfur. "Oh weary traveler, please rest." This voice was light and feminine, soft in a way that evoked calmness. But Tamako knew not to be lured so easily.
"Esteemed host, grant me an audience with the White Snake Sage."
A pause, then a soft slither. A fully grown ball python slithers up, its length nearly her height. "You…" Her splint tongue hisses out, "Genjutsu does not work on you."
Tamako regards the snake calmly, "No, it does not."
Then, the lightest giggle. "Oh, it's such a shame. Such a shame indeed. Yes yes." She circles Tamako like a predator, snickering and smiling, slowly blinking before slithering away. "A shame, yes. Chakra strong, vital. Sweet. I hope you'll let me have a taste later." It tilts its head cutely at her before opening its jaw wide open, regurgitating a long stick. At the end was a paper lantern, somehow untouched. It fell to the ground with a small clatter. "A child you are, young. But not so young. Young one, take the lantern and light it to guide yourself."
Tamako picks up the lantern and lights it with a weak katon. The snake careens at her actions. "Good good. I am called Tagorihime. Young one as yourself has not learned to use one's full senses beside sight, guide yourself through the fog." Its voice weakened at each word, fully disappearing into the fog that had suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
She took a step forward, an echo at each as the fog surrounded her. The lantern was almost useless in the fog and instantly, Tamako knew this was a trick. A faulty gift to rely on… this was not her answer to traversing through the fog.
The first snake, Tagorihime, remarked about Genjutsu. That must've been the first trial. Snakes are deceitful and often rely on the covert arts, the first trial was to ensure she understood such covert art. The next, was to traverse the fog.
Young ones as yourself has not learned to use one's full senses beside sight, guide yourself through the fog.
The lantern was a trick. She glanced down at the lantern. It had a wooden handle, an iron chain connecting to the paper lantern. It was by all means, a normal lantern, but she could feel latent chakra within. So subtle. She brought it to eye-level and looked deeper. Fine lines decorated the paper lantern, four large kanji for each side. They read, create, obscure, dampen and hide.
The fog around her was getting heavier and heavier, she could almost feel the weight in her lungs as she breathed. No matter how much chakra she pushed in the air, she could feel nothing yet everything. The fog must be imbued with chakra, overwhelming her senses. Without a moment of hesitation, she douses the fire. She waits with bated breath, almost sighing in relief when the fog recedes. In darkness, she takes a single step forward, her ears peeled as she listens around her.
Soft slithers, wet droplets. A chuckle then an ominous crack in the distance.
That's not worrying, at all…
She rests the lantern on her shoulder and holds out a sign, this time, deliberately and carefully. Chakra streams down her feet and into the ground, coursing the area around her. Slowly, a mental map forms and her feet guide her, eyes closed and ears peeled open.
Tamako walks for minutes, avoiding sudden cliffs and holes, walking around deep puddles of water and dodging the small snakes that slither beneath her feet. Finally, she reached a large door, parts of the door were chipped off, leaving a few splinters that she easily took care of. She grabbed the large handle, the hinges groaning in protest as she pried it open.
She steps in, hearing the door careen and groan before shutting. A hiss in the dark, bouncing off the walls in a way that hearing alone couldn't distinguish where it came from. Just barely, she could feel a weak presence, pouncing forward.
With the blunt of her lantern, Tamako smacks whatever was thrown at her, hearing a wheeze and a splutter. "Ow!" A girlish voice crackles out. Tamako then sidesteps to dodge the same signature again. She hears a plop to the side, a small crackle and jumps into the air.
A whiplash pounces, Tamako could feel fly hairs dancing around her face as she dodged and weaved, a few whistles that could only indicate some sort of senbon-like needle threatening to imprint into her.
This dance lasts for half an hour, her eyes still closed. Light on her feet as if she were gliding through the dark and pitch-black ambiance, a soft whine breaks the tranquility itself. "Sssso agile..! Ssso nimble!"
The snake slithers away audibly before her voice snaps and light suddenly appears. Alongside the wall, numerous torches lit up subsequently, revealing the large open area. "Swift and clever." She was a small thing, just barely two feet long. "You may call me Ichikishimahime." Her voice was snotty for just a second longer before the snake playfulling swayed its head back and forth. "That was so fun! Can we do that again? Please please please?"
The milk snake slithers up her legs, into her clothes then out of her sleeves to give her doe eyes, or as much of doe eyes a snake could give her. "Almost no one passes Tagorihime's trial." She then pleads again, "Play with me after you meet Sennin-sama, okay?" Her head turns to the end of the room before gesturing it with a cute tilt to her head. "Just go that way, and remember! I am Ichikishimahime!"
What a long name.
Before Tamako could even say a single word, the snake jumps off, slithering away into a crevice, never to be seen again. She takes the snake's advice and walks up the stairs out of the room, and is greeted by a very large snake. It wasn't as large as either Manda or Aoba, but nevertheless, large. It was black in color with red scales alongside its eyes that spread down its long body.
A tongue flickers out and that's all the warning Tamako gets.
The snake dives towards her, leaving a crater as the nimble girl jumps into the air before sending out a few senbon. The snake's tail lashes out, hitting the senbon again before opening its jaw, a long blade slowly regurgitating out before snapping forward.
Tamako unseals her katana and holds it close, diverging the blade's trajectory to the side with her trusty blade before throwing out a few kunai and senbon mixed in. The snake scoffs, "You think a failed trick will work?" And smacks the offending projectiles to the side.
The kunai spread all around the large snack, its jaws retracting the blade back and Tamako moves.
She hiraishins to the kunai stuck on the roof, cupping her lips before spitting out water bullets, before teleporting back to the ground to the left of the snake. The palm of her hands slammed down, two large chunks of earth sandwiching the large snake, successfully subduing it and forcing it to take the full brunt of her suiton.
With a quick jolt to her chakra, she lands on the Snake's head, a single palm sitting on the tip of its nose. "You are no match for me."
The snake blinks, closing its jaw and huffing. "This one is called Tagitsuhime. Release me and I shall lead you to Sennin-sama."
It takes only a jot of her chakra for the doton structure to crumble away, and she jumps off Tagitsuhime. "Come now, as She waits for you."
The large snake shuffles away, the last door opening for her with Tamako quickly in pursuit. They pass by mirages of snakes, eyeing her curiously if not hungrily. They arrived in a large throne-like room, revealing the largest snake Tamako had ever seen. The Sage was an albino rat snake and she sat on a sacred throne with her body coiled around. She adorned this yellow turban with two pointed edges and an orange headdress. There was a chain with a green orb around her neck and if Tamako took a closer look, she'd notice that the Snake's body had begun to grow together with the ground as if the Sage hadn't moved from its spot in generations.
The White Snake Sage breathes out an angry line of smoke from its tiny nostrils, tobacco encompassing her senses as the cigarette in the snake's mouth lazily wafts around. "Tell me of the three names of those who came to this Land to live on the very ground we call tsuchi."
Tamako blinks up at the large albino snake almost confused. The snake tilts her head everso slightly, "Well?"
Three trials, three names. "Tagorihime, Ichikishimahime, and Tagitsuhime."
In a life long ago, these names along with Susanoo and Amatersu were connected to Shintoism. Perhaps these names had such significance as well.
The snake seems to careens, "Yes, you have completed all three trials as the names bespoken have judged true." The end of its tail whipping back and forth, smashing against the ground and leaving soft vibrations. "Finally, a worthy contender to learn Senjutsu of the legendary Snake Sennin Herself. Not like that bespeckled one before you, altered and corrosive." The tail end gains speed as the snake's tongue peaks from the tip of its mouth. "The first went to those ugly toads, the second to that slimy slug, and now finally, one for the revered snake." She laughs out ugly, her fangs sharp. "Now, where shall I bite you? For you to become exalted such as I—"
"Hakuja Sennin, I am already well tuned with nature chakra." Her palms rose and the life of a tree quickly sprouted from the stone ground, growing taller and taller as it reached the roof of the cave before its leaves turned green, yellow, orange, then falling to the ground. Weaken, dark and black as the tree grew old, withered and finally collapsed to the ground.
"Ha!" The Snake laughed, "One such as yourself, one that could become a dragon, refuses to be bit by the Snake Sennin Herself?" The Snake almost seems to sputter in vexation and indignation. "The gall of you..! I'll eat you whole, savor what chakra you have and—"
"I've come to the Snakes because I believe that the Snake's disposition to breathe life and imbue nature chakra into inorganic structures using natural energy itself, fit's me far better than the likes of either Toad or Slug." She eyes the large snake, watching the slitted eyes grow narrowing at her words. "Teach me to utilize the nature chakra I naturally absorb."
Silence and an angry huff. "Such insolence from a lesser being. One's life has already reached a quarter finished yet you dare?"
They stare at each other in dead silence, their aura's reaching frightening heights as the weeds that have stubbornly grown through the cold slabs of stone seem to both flourish and wither at their presence.
A few precious seconds fly by and the Snake snuffles, prideful. "The Snake takes you in, as they can no longer stand the likes of the Toad nor Slug. One such as myself has never met purer chakra than the Mother of Chakra herself. One such as you may never fall to the grasps of neither Toad nor Slug." She breathes in her cigarette, the butt of it glowing orange. "But make no mistake, one mishap and we Snake shall devour."
There's a frightened grin on Tamako's face, one that she hasn't revealed since the pinnacle of the War when she'd fought Madara more times than she could ever count. It's one with challenge, a feeling of dauntlessness and the feeling to defy, wow and conquer. "Of course." Tamako responds evenly, "And with one fortune, and I shall devour all that is to be offered."
The Snake finally looks at her with an emotion other than anger or contempt. It's a look of comprehension. A feeling that the Snake knows all too well. The hunger for power, the yearning to learn all. "One such as yourself reminds thyself of a lowly creature just as you." A pause, then with cheekiness that had no belonging in the Snake Sennin as old as herself. "Their mind and greed such as yourself, but the body of an unworthy. Learn correctly, and all of Ryūchi Cave will be yours to devour."
For all this time, she has held contempt for someone like Orochimaru. His greed having no bounds, unsightly behavior to reach the top. But at this moment, she almost resonated with the Snake Sannin himself. He was right, how could she waste away in her form like this? The power of a Sage was right at her fingertips, it would be a shame if she had never achieved such status. Achieve such power—
Something inside of her snapped, and she looked up at the Snake Sennin distrustfully.
Tamako was never someone who truly coveted for power, for the sake of power. That was never her, perhaps in her very younger years before she graduated, but for the past century? She coughs wetly, falling to her knees and gags. Teary eyes glancing up, feeling an exhale of smoke wafted in her direction. "You…"
The White Sage Snake chitters, "Such a shame. I was about to have a meal like no other."
"That smoke, you've woven Genjutsu into it, haven't you? A compulsory one."
"What gave it away?"
"Your own wants and feelings are reflected onto the victim… I was never one to covet power for the sake of power." Her chakra coaxes her slowly. This is the second time within a week she has fallen for genjutsu. Those that affected sight were so easy to snap out of, but those targeted and utilized other senses such as sound or in this case, smell, were so rare that she hadn't even thought to train herself against.
She curses at her faults and glares up. "You go on and on about consuming, but have you ever feared to be consumed yourself?"
The White Snake Sage doesn't blink at her words, but rather seethes. "What blasphemy do you speak of? You dare to threaten an exalted one such as myself?"
Tamako's chakra buzzes dangerously around her, the air heavy as the ground beneath her cracks, her chakra so fine, that air trembles loudly in sharp quivers that echo. Roots grow throughout the ground, crystal ceasing terrain and a dark aura of her chakra finally presents around her form. It parades as she finally stops dampening her chakra signature, and just barely, the White Snake Sage falters. "You dare think you can defeat all of Ryūchi?"
"Oh, I don't dare." Tamako replies softly. "I dare to constrict and pin you down, I dare to reveal that one such as myself outranks one like yourself."
Unlike toads who may often stick together in the wild, climbing on each other for camaraderie, snakes will defer to the strongest.
Her hand rises high, fingers switching—then a snap.
Crystal flies, wood crunches, and Tamako relishes in battle once more.
