"The sun really never rises here, huh..?"
The tall grandfather clock next to the door indicated it was quarter past eight— a time that would typically be well into the morning in the human world. If only judging by the scenery Lea was met with when she pulled open the heavy velvet curtains of her room— The very same guest bedroom she had woken up in the day before—, she would've presumed it was without a doubt nighttime. The inky darkness of Devildom's skies had a haunting beauty to them, but they also carried an eerie sense of timelessness. The demon butler, Barbatos, who appeared to be impeccably punctual, had stepped into the room promptly at eight with a breakfast tray and kindly noted to the confused human girl that it was indeed a morning, encouraging her to prepare for the day ahead.
"Prepare for what, exactly?" Lea muttered under her breath, letting the heavy curtain fall shut again. "What am I supposed to do in a place like this..?" She sighed. The situation she had found herself in still felt too unreal for her to even start to comprehend: One moment, she had been in her own world, grappling with the aftermath of a terrifying ritual she was forced into, and the next, she was thrown into a realm completely different from her own, filled with demons.
The events of the previous day replayed in her mind; After being filled in with the details of her current situation, she had spent the entire day confined in her room, pacing around nervously, too anxious to even dare to step outside. The overwhelming sense of disorientation had haunted her ever since she had found herself in Devildom— That feeling kept her tossing and turning the entire night, preventing her from having restful sleep. The long hours that dragged by felt like an eternity, and she was starting to feel a bit dizzy.
The aftermath of the restless night still loomed upon her as she slowly slouched over to the coffee table— With a low thud, she threw herself onto the couch, finally to take a closer look at the meal presented to her. Barbatos paid exquisite attention to detail, and the breakfast he had prepared for her was a testament to his culinary skill; The dark wooden tray was decorated with intricate demon insignias and elegantly adorned with delicate lace doilies. A porcelain teapot with a matching cup and saucer stood at one corner, and next to the tea set sat a small plate of delicate pastries, each one filled with a different filling— Some sweet with fruit preserves, others savory with cheese and herbs. Of course, a perfect breakfast wouldn't be complete without a vibrant assortment of berries, grapes, and slices of tropical fruits, and that was exactly what was presented to her on the tray as well.
Only a moment ago Lea was convinced she had no appetite whatsoever, but the presentation in front of her was more than enough to convince her otherwise. Soon she savored the delicate pastries and succulent fruits, finding solace in the exquisite flavors that offered a brief respite from the whirlwind of her somber thoughts.
With the last sip of fragrant tea from the porcelain cup, Lea took a moment to reflect on her situation once more. What she struggled to understand the most was the inexplicable bond she now shared with Diavolo, the demon prince of Devildom— But, being able to fully understand it or not, the revelation that her life was magically tied to his presence had been a chilling realization. She felt like a fragile puppet, with her strings controlled by forces beyond her understanding. What about the demon prince himself and the other demons she had met upon her arrival? Were they allies or captors? Did they have her best interests at heart, or was she merely a pawn in a game she didn't yet understand? This far they had shown her nothing but kindness… But in the setting she found herself in, trust was a precious commodity, and she struggled to know where to place it. But, unfortunately, if she wished to return home to the human world, she'd have to find a way to break the mysterious curse that bound her to the demon prince… And forging an alliance with these demons seemed the only way to do that. With another deep sigh, Lea placed the porcelain cup back onto the tray and got up from the couch.
A set of fresh clothes sat neatly folded on her perfectly made bed— The demon butler's handiwork, obviously. Lea picked up a piece of clothing in her hands, examining it with curiosity. She was surprised to find herself looking at what appeared to be something very similar to… a school uniform? The design, though, had a unique twist, in keeping with the otherworldly style of Devildom. It had a similar style as the crimson attire Lord Diavolo had been wearing upon her arrival, but this uniform was primarily black, accentuated with crimson accents. The skirt was pleated and reached just above the knees, and the white blouse created a contrast against the dark jacket. Trying on the uniform, to her surprise Lea found each and every piece of clothing to be perfectly her size. Barbatos had a sharp eye for details, so all it took was a single glance at her and he knew exactly which sized clothes would fit her the best.
As Lea was about to put away the black dress shirt she had been wearing until now, she paused to examine the piece of clothing once more. "This is his shirt, isn't it?" She whispered to herself. If she wasn't completely mistaken, Lord Diavolo had been wearing an exactly identical shirt underneath that red uniform. "Well… It was kind of him to lend me one of his own…" She muttered, a faint blush creeping onto her cheeks upon the realization that she had been unknowingly wearing the demon lord's clothing, feeling a strange mix of both embarrassment and gratitude. With a shake of her head, she banished the embarrassment and carefully folded the shirt, placing it alongside the rest of her belongings on the bed.
Stepping in front of the tall mirror, Lea couldn't help but to marvel at the perfect fit of the uniform— Every piece of clothing embraced her figure flawlessly, as if the whole set had been tailored especially for her. But, a perfect fit or not, as Lea stared at her reflection, a wave of self-consciousness washed over her. In all likelihood, this uniform was designed for the students of Devildom; As a human, Lea couldn't help but feel out of place, her reflection in the mirror a stark reminder of her status as an outsider. In a realm inhabited by demons, she couldn't help but wonder how she would be perceived. The idea of standing out in a world where she didn't belong made her anxious, and the unfamiliarity of it all was a weight on her shoulders. The fact that she was a stranger in a strange land grappled her with a profound sense of isolation and vulnerability, especially when the residents of that unknown world happened to be demons.
"Shit..! No, get a hold of yourself..!" Lea's voice wavered slightly as she commanded herself, trying to dispel the doubts from her mind. Staying passive wouldn't help anything; She'd have to adapt and survive! She liked it or not, this was her new reality, and she had to embrace it, uniform and all. "I can do it." She whispered, determination filling her gaze as she met her eyes in the mirror. "I just need to find a more positive outlook on this!" Lea declared, finally finding a boost of courage. "Being used as a human sacrifice and winding up into a world of demons could be an adventure!" She was trying to cheer herself up, but, saying all that aloud didn't make the situation sound any better, more the opposite— Her words carried a bitter irony, and reality quickly cast a shadow over her optimism. "No, that sounds more like a punishment than anything! What have I done to deserve this?!" And just like that, the boost of confidence was gone. How come, out of all people of the world, she had to be the one to find herself at the center of this supernatural drama?
Taking a deep breath, Lea tried to prepare herself to face the challenges that lay ahead— If she wanted to find a way to return home, there was no room for uncertainty. Her first day in the Devildom was about to begin, and she'd have to find determination to tackle all the challenges she might face.
