How did it all go so wrong?
Staring at the plain ceiling, Lucas felt the softness of the bed beneath him. Except it wasn't his bed, it wasn't his room and it definitely wasn't his house.
It wasn't even his world. How did he know? Because he passed out right after filling a random CYOA form online and woke up in bed in a room that was too plain to be his.
He figured that it was just some advertisement scheme to raise awareness for the show. He'd double checked the email the link came in for viruses and found nothing out of the ordinary.
Then again, that's what he gets for filling out shady forms from even shadier emails.
There was also the fact that he had memories of things that he was very sure never happened. The major one being the fact that he was living in Japan!
If that wasn't enough, he was now in a world ruled by the power of tits and friendship all because his bored ass decided not to pay attention during history class.
Taking a breath to calm himself, he spied the Kuoh academy uniform in the corner of his eyes, hanging mockingly on his wardrobe handle.
"You couldn't have picked something else? Maybe Food Wars or Avatar?" He murmured, berating himself for his choices. "I could have been eating amazing food or relaxing on a tropical island."
Letting out a sigh he forced himself to sit upright, recalling the choices he picked out. Obviously he was human so no eternal youth for him, not now at least.
His build would be rather unorthodox in some people's opinion but that didn't matter, it was more in tune with his actual self.
By picking the human race, he gained some points to spend in the sacred gear section of the CYOA.
An independent human without ties to any particular faction, he'd gotten a free upgrade to his looks because everyone in DxD looked good. Calculation based magic system was shit so he'd purchased the devils' imagination based system.
How that would work with his lack of demonic power, he would soon find out.
Another advantage to being a human was that he got the option to gain prodigious skill and expertise in three skills for free. He'd chosen Physics, Biology and Chemistry before purchasing and adding Engineering and Computer Sciences to the mix.
The bulk of points he had left, he'd purchased the Longinus gear Unknown Dictator.
His mom was a doctor and his dad was a mechanic, safe to say, his upbringing had a large effect on his life choices.
Unknown dictator didn't have a physical form. Rather, it gave its wielder the ability to create and control electronic devices, mechanical equipment as well as manipulate iron.
The perfect gear for someone like him.
"Lucas! Come down it's time for breakfast." A mature female voice called from a distance.
"I'll be there in a second!" He yelled back.
Groaning, he trudged his way into the bathroom. His 'dad' in this life worked as a project manager in a tech firm. He got a job opportunity with a huge paycheck which resulted in them moving to Kuoh from the states.
His 'mom' was a traditional housewife. Yeah, nothing at all like his own parents.
A few minutes later, he was freshened up, dressed in the accursed uniform and seated at the dining table.
His dad left for work early, leaving Lucas eating breakfast while his mom did whatever she was doing in the kitchen.
All the while, he was reviewing what he knew so far. He was in the same year as Issei but the main protagonist hadn't joined the Occult Research Club yet.
Good news; the show hadn't kicked off yet. Bad news; it'll kick off anytime soon.
He, Lucas Taylor, was simply a straight 'A' student with no interactions with anyone of importance. The true definition of a background character.
A warning from his mom about being late for school had him polishing off his plate and rushing out of the house.
Rather than hurrying to school, he had a different destination in mind as he mounted his bicycle; the junkyard.
He wasn't going to risk the chance of whether Rias or Sona could sense that he had awakened a sacred gear, a Longinus for that matter.
'Missing that island right about now.' He complained internally as he pedaled.
It didn't take him long to reach the junkyard. He hooked his bike some distance away from the entrance so as not to get it mixed up with everything else.
'No need to keep wearing this right now.' He thought, pulling off the Kuoh academy blazer and white lined shirt and stuffing it into his bag, leaving him in a plain black shirt as he made his way into the junkyard.
An hour of roaming around had given him a mental inventory of a decent portion of the yard. With that done, he had a new task; Tinkering.
A busted up recreational vehicle hovered just a bit above ground and Lucas was right behind it with a strained look on his face.
He had an instinctive grasp of how to use the sacred gear but it didn't change the fact that it was still his first time actually using it.
Lowering it beside a car which was also busted, he heaved a sigh. Beside the two cars were other junk like a broken air conditioner, a damaged inverter and a few sheets of metal and iron.
Unknown dictator functioned based on the user's imagination, the available mass and mana/stamina. In simple terms it meant that as long as he had materials and energy, he could build almost anything.
Flexing his fingers for a moment, he placed his hand on the RV, calling his sacred gear to life.
What appeared to be lines of magic circles spread from the point of contact, covering the vehicles and extending to the other junk around them, a glow of magic coating them.
He felt a large drain on both his stamina and mana as everything seemed to melt or meld together into shape.
More than seeing, he could feel everything clicking in place all at the same time. It was more than just pressing a button and getting results. He could feel it requesting and pulling information necessary to make the changes he wished to construct.
The processes that he didn't understand or rather couldn't be bothered to use logic were pushed forward by imagination and mana.
Soon, he was done. With heavy breaths he pulled his hand back as the glow faded, revealing his first masterpiece.
On the outside it looked like a normal working recreational vehicle. Sliding the door open, he was met with a neat and cozy interior. He welcomed the slight chill in the air due to the full functioning AC unit.
While the vehicle would still need fuel to move around, the inverter refitted into it would be responsible for powering up any electronics he would later add.
He needed a home away from home because having an address that was common knowledge to everyone who decided to look didn't sit right with him.
"Not too shabby for a first time build." He muttered, moving over to the 'living' area and crashing on the soft bed. 'Magic cleans up nice…who knew?'
Those were his last thoughts before he allowed sleep to claim him.
He had woken up three hours later, still fatigued but with a lot of work to do. He spent the next hour and a half pulling different items from corners of the junkyard to customize the RV to his liking.
Fridges, a proximity sensor for security and more batteries to upgrade the one already built in. Last but not least, he added a cloaking projector to render the RV invisible.
He had barely recovered from his previous uses of his gear, this one had knocked him out for another two hours.
On the bright side, he realized that the more knowledge he had about what he wanted to build, the less energy he took from him. That led him to put together smaller builds before using them whole to fill the gaps in his knowledge.
By the time he woke up the second time, it was already getting late, already past when he should have been on his way home.
Luckily, there were no missed calls or frenzied texts so he wasn't too bothered. That didn't stop him from quickly riding back home, stopping to throw on the upper part of his uniform before entering the house.
His shoulders sagged a bit as he walked in.
"Hey honey. How was school?" His mother called out from the living room.
"It was alright. Just the same as usual." He answered, hurrying up the stairs and into his room to take a shower and wash off the smell of dirt and garbage that clung to him.
Hopping into the shower, he could argue that the warm water spraying on his body was the best part of his day. Tension slowly bled out of his system but not completely.
He was nowhere near prepared enough to relax.
"Day 1 out of…God knows how long…complete." He breathed out, a humorless chuckle leaving his lips. 'I'm screwed, aren't I?'
The silence that he got in return didn't help his mental state.
He thought of his actual family. His mom was barely around but that didn't mean she was a bad mother, just busy. On the other hand, his dad was around a lot.
It was hard to forget the weekends they spent in the garage toying with different machines. Would they be proud of what he was doing? Probably not but it was survival of the fittest.
Once again, he had ditched the idea of going to school, this time in favor of going to an ATM just outside a mall.
He could literally feel the machines and devices around him registering in his head. Tuning out everything else, he focused on the security cameras pointed towards the machine.
With a thought, they were set on a loop. He barely stumbled as he got to the machine, stepping into the camera's field of view had it been working properly.
With an eye on his surroundings, he slotted a random plastic card into the machine, not wanting to look out of place to people passing by.
He felt the connection grow stronger as he touched the machine, giving it instructions. Ten minutes later, he left with a smile on his face and a school bag full of cash.
'Time to go grocery shopping.' He needed his energy up after all.

Sitting at her desk in the student council room, she showed a small frown. The staff of Kuoh academy were in one way or another connected to the Sitri and Gremory, meaning that they all reported to them.
Mostly her seeing as how Rias shirked anything even resembling paperwork.
At the moment, she was pondering over the reported absence of one of the students in the second year. Normally, the case of a student ditching school was none of her problem but the problem lay in who the particular student was.
Lucas Taylor. The boy was an excellent student, acing every class since he transferred a year ago. He'd also never missed a day of class as shown by the records of his previous school.
Other than his formerly perfect attendance, his smart and oddly good looking features, there was nothing special about him as far as she could tell.
The only reason it even pulled her attention was due to the fact that she was aware of some fallen wandering around in Kuoh.
They were already toeing the line as clients were turning up dead but with no concrete evidence, she couldn't pin the blame on them.
Things were tense between the factions and she refused to be the spark to reignite the war.
'Maybe it's something unrelated and I'm overthinking it.' She thought for a moment before sighing.

He had to hold back a smile as he left the junkyard, making his way to where he parked his bike. He'd spent quite a while stocking up the new fridge and cooler with provisions before returning to Tinkering, though he didn't make much progress on that front.
It was his fault for getting side tracked. His curiosity got the best of him and he found himself building a generator that ran on biodegradable waste to see how much trash it would take to fully power up the rv.
The answer? A lot, but that was fine. What was the point of having these powers if he couldn't at least have some fun.
His thoughts screeched to a halt as he realized that there was nobody in sight, the streets becoming extremely empty.
He stiffened as he barely caught sight of a shadow of something much bigger than a bird flying above him.
Bottling his reaction, his eyes flickered around, trying to come up with a plan. Before he could go further, he felt the hair on his neck straighten with tension, immediately throwing himself to the side as something bright struck where he previously stood.
He wasn't quick enough, causing some debris from the explosive impact to graze him.
Noticing that the attack had blown up the door of a nearby house, he quickly rushed inside just as what he now recognized to be a spear of light struck the wall beside the door, narrowly missing him.
Thankfully, they had somehow emptied up the street so there was no one in the building.
"Pathetic human, I've waited long enough to do this." He heard a male voice echo from outside. "Come out and face me, you're going to die either way."
He could almost chuckle at the sheer arrogance in his tone and the disgust in which he referred to his race.
'Still, he has a point. I'll die if I don't think of something quick.' He thought as another light spear exploded through the window, sending glass everywhere.
'I'm not paying for that.'

Hovering in front of the building, he snarled at the pathetic excuse for a hiding place. Running wouldn't save him, it would only slightly delay his death.
While Raynare had decided to play with her prey, he would rather die than sully his hands by prancing around with a human.
His orders were simple; eliminate the boy. He wasn't a mage but he had a potentially powerful gear and that could be a threat to the Grigori.
He would have killed him sooner but the brat suddenly started disappearing. Ambushing him on his way back home was a bust, his target didn't show.
Instead, he followed him from his house but the boy disappeared soon after he dropped off his bike. His irritation only grew by the hour as he searched and just when he was about to leave, he spotted the boy again.
He wasn't going to let him get away this time.
Flying through the door and into the house, he found no trace of the boy.
Wrong, he sensed his magic.
"I don't know how you manage to hide yourself earlier but this is the end for you." He said out loud, as he quickly found himself in front of a closet.
Pathetic.
With a savage grin, he hurled another light spear, blowing the door up only for his grin to drop. The boy wasn't there!
Instead, he found a stool with an unnecessarily large and complicated looking microwave sat atop it. The timer on the microwave was on a countdown, reaching 0 seconds just as his eyes widened.
Before he could react, it exploded violently, catching him point blank and throwing him back into the wall.
His vision danced with black as his ears rang, pain filling his entire body. He only just managed to see the brat walk into view with a smug smirk on his face.
"Ouch, that had to hurt." The boy mocked as he approached him.
He managed a snarl as he stared up at him. "I'll kill you vermin!"
If possible, the boy got even more smug, squatting down to his level. "You see, I would believe that if you weren't currently bleeding out on the floor."
It was then he realized that the pain he was feeling in his leg was due to the absence of said limb.
"Yeah you're not walking away from that any time soon." The boy added, grabbing a particularly long piece of wood from the floor. "You're no vampire but this'll work either way."
"Wait-!" Before he could protest, he stabbed it through his chest.
His already spotty vision grew blurry as he felt his life slip through his grasp.

Looking at the body of the dead fallen angel, he let out a deep breath.
'It looks like Issei wasn't the only target.' He thought, picking himself up and dusting his clothes. 'All things considered I didn't do so bad.'
Clearly he needed to up his game now that things seemed to be getting started. The cloaking projector he set up around RV allowed him to stay hidden but that wouldn't hold for long.
An idea popped into his head, a very crazy and nerdish idea that just might work.
He almost bolted out of the building to get to work before remembering the corpse lying on the floor.
"Now what do I do with you?" He muttered in contemplation.
